more days at home

Papa actually got a lot of days off this year. I of course got two weeks (I got three with my last job, but hey, not working all summer will make up for that!) off, and Christmas seemed like it was just right after I went on break (which it essentially was). So, by the end of the break, things were winding down.

I had the opportunity to sleep in (until 9 one of the days!! 7:30 most of the days), and thanks to Isaac's photography skills have one picture of myself without huge dark circles and bags. Woo-hoo! We got this pasta bike from Nana - thanks Nana! I haven't felt up to making my own pasta just yet, but with a three day weekend coming up, maybe we will try some farfalle or ravioli.
 More from our budding photographer
Isaac and Sonia got to play together a lot. They had fun, but Isaac asked me multiple times if he could have a baby brother. Essentially it sounds like I should get working on that ASAP. Poor Isaac - he is so much older than Sonia... but it does get more fun for both of them all the time to play together. I don't think Isaac realizes that a baby brother would be still younger than Sonia. Oh well. He was cranky in the car coming back from London's birthday and said again, "Mama, I just want a baby brother..." then the conversation got going a little and he told me that there are supposed to be seven kids in our family. Little guy - he has the sweetest, best big brother heart in the whole world. He has always been that way too. I am so lucky to have him as my first child. Why I am posting this on Sonia's blog, I don't know. Sonia, you are lucky.
Isaac is lucky to have you too! Isaac is still a little scared to go upstairs by himself. Sonia has no such fears. In fact, she doesn't even mind walking off on her own in the store. So, lately, when Isaac needs to go upstairs to get something, he picks up little Sonia and carries her up the stairs with him. Sonia, you are such a good sister to Isaac, easing his fears!
We even got them to both dress up like Spiderman for a picture. :)
We went to the park a few days. It was nice and sunny, although still a little cold.
Isaac wore his police costume and had fun playing police with some boys at the park.
Here is our police officer with his little motorcycle. Thank you, Auntie Anna!
We did some baking too. For some reason, this is the second year that we have had to make gingerbread twice in order to make a gingerbread house as was originally planned. Last year Papa made the mistake of letting a neighbor kid eat part of the roof prior to assembly. He has now learned about gingerbread houses.
We made some cookies too. We have an Idaho-shaped cookie cutter, courtesy of my friend Sarah, so made an Idaho cream sandwich with some of those cookies (I accidentally baked one backwards). Yum yum.
And here is the gingerbread house. Not too fancy, but it is complete! I kind of like eating the royal icing. :) So nice to have some days at home to do these things.

amoxicillin

We went in on the 31st because Sonia had been sick for about a week, and that morning she woke up and her eyes were stuck shut from the eye boogers (see picture above). When we went in, the doctor was really interesting. He was a guy that (although I totally don't diagnose this by myself) I would say was squarely somewhere on the high-functioning end of the autism spectrum. He seemed a bit uncomfortable and was a little socially awkward. He said he was filling in for some people, so my guess is maybe he was retired..? His badge looked pretty old. Okay, well, when he came in I was nursing Sonia, and I know Salem is a little different than Eugene, but if you are working in pediatrics, you've gotta assume that sometimes when a mama and baby are sitting in a room getting bored, they are probably going to start nursing. He said, "Oh, the baby is eating," and it sounded like he was asking, "Should I come back later?" Well, "No," I said, "She's not that hungry, it's okay!" So he asked a few questions, then wanted to check Sonia's ears. He seemed to have a hard time taking a look. Sonia was wiggling a little, but not too much for a baby. He just had the otoscope in there and was trying to steady her head with the other hand. I wanted to say, "Maybe pull the pinna up and back?!?" but I refrained with every fiber of my being…. Anyway, he determined that it was a sinus infection but not an ear infection, and baby Sonia had to go on amoxicillin for the third time now in her short life. I asked, "Are you sure it is bacterial and not viral?" and he said, yes and had a decent reason why. I figured based on the way he presented that he probably knew it in his head but just didn't demonstrate it as so much in his manner, so I said, okay, we can try it. It really is helping clear up the snot though. Sonia doesn't have any more eye boogers and the amount of green and clear snot coming out of her nose has decreased quite a bit. Poor Sonia! I hope this is the last sickness you get for awhile.

lover of yogurt

In case you didn't see these pictures on Facebook…here is my little dairy maid.

Really, does life get any better than this?

So many things Sonia enjoys all in one: food, a sensory experience, and being a little naughty by standing up in her high chair and putting her foot on the table!

First snow again

On December 6th, it snowed! It had already snowed in Newport, Eugene, just about everywhere else. We were staying home from work because I didn't feel 100% and Isaac had the stomach flu the day before - so I figured I would just play it safe and not risk spreading the gastroenteritis love.

Sonia loved the snow. This was not actually her first snow. It did snow last year. But, she was too little to really experience it. This year, she got to watch the snow coming down.

"I think I would like to go out and play in this white stuff," said Sonia.
We waited until there was enough of it on the ground, then bundled Sonia up. She didn't seem to mind having all those layers on, as long as she got to go outside!

In hindsight, we actually had some snow pants that were size 12 mos and I should have put her in those. Maybe we could have stayed out longer if we had.

Well, we had a good amount of fun anyway!
Sonia took off a glove and….
"Ah, so that is how it feels…."
When we came back in, this is what came off the bottom of Sonia's shoes.

It was actually so cold that the snow in our driveway (which doesn't get any sun, apparently), stayed there for a whole week. Luckily since that time it has been slightly warmer. I don't really like temperatures below freezing all of the time. It's fine in small doses, but… we live in Oregon for more than one reason!
