Fabric Tuesday
I had a very productive day in the sewing room yesterday. I managed to cut and sew 4 fun blocks for So Sarah Sews. I got a little carried away, but it is for a great cause.
I decided to link up to fabric Tuesday at Quiltstory today because, KT Quilts gave me some inspiration for this fabric.
I bought this fabric some 20+ years ago while on vacation in Virginia one summer. I think the original project was an apron for 4-H. Obviously that never happened because I have toted it around with me for many years.
I hope everyone has a great day.

Make a difference Monday!
Last week as I was reading my regular blogs, my friend Jenna, linked up to Sarah's blog Sew Sarah Sews. Sarah is looking for volunteers to make a block so she can make a quilt for each of the foster children her mother currently has. You can read her whole story and get the links to the Flickr group from the link above.
I signed up to make a one of each block. I have several friends who have been 'through the system' and I have several friends who are foster parents themselves. She requested pinks, purples, and white for the specified blocks, so here is what I have pulled from my stash.
I hope everyone had a great weekend and if any of you were in the path of 'Irene' that your home and belongings are all in tact.
Now I hope you can make a difference in someones life today.
God bless!

Friday fun and giveaway link up
Hi everyone! I hope everyone tries the zucchini cake I posted yesterday, it is so good.
On the sewing front, I finished my scrappy project.
It started with...see the jack-o-lanterns in the bottom corner?

| box of random 2.5" squares |
And then...
To finished...
Like I said this was made entirely from scraps even the plain brown backing and tan were leftovers from previous projects. The 5" squares on the ends were left from the 'beast'.

Guilt free cake
Got your attention now I bet. What if your cake contained vegetables? Would you feel less guilty about eating it? I know it almost makes you cringe at the thought, but don't worry, you/your kids won't even know what is in it.
Yesterday a fellow blogger was talking about how much zucchini they had and were substituting it for other vegetables in different recipes. It reminded me of the different things I have made and that my mom made when I was a still at home.
The first thing that came to mind was her chocolate zucchini cake. Mom made a lot of the usual things as well, fried zucchini and zucchini bread, but the cake stands above them all ,and well most people like cake.
Since it isn't a secret family recipe here it is for everyone to enjoy.

Chocolate Zucchini Cake
2 c. Sugar
1 c. Vegetable oil
3 eggs
2 ½ c. all purpose flour
¼ c. cocoa
1 tsp. baking soda
¼ tsp. baking powder
¼ tsp. salt
½ c. milk
2 c. shredded fresh zucchini (I peel mine so my hubby doesn’t know he is eating it)
1 TBSP. vanilla
In a large mixing bowl, combine sugar and oil. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each. Combine flour cocoa, baking soda, baking powder and salt. Gradually add to egg mixture alternately with milk. Stir in zucchini and vanilla. Pour into greased 15 x 10-inch baking pan. Bake at 375 F. for 25 minutes or until cake tests done.
Frosting for Zucchini Cake:
½ c. butter
¼ c. cocoa
6 TBSP evaporated milk (I have used regular milk with no problems)
1 lb. (4 cups) powdered sugar
1 TBSP vanilla
Mix all ingredients together until smooth. Spread frosting over chocolate zucchini cake while it is still HOT. Cool on wire rack.
I hope any of you that try like it as much as I do. My husband didn't know any different until after he had a few pieces and came across a fleck of the peel that I had missed when I peeled my zucchini. He still ate it, but we laugh even harder knowing I had given half the cake to his parents and brother knowing his dad and brother don't eat many vegetables.

WIP Wednesday
I feel like I had a really productive day yesterday with my 'fabric therapy' I pulled some scraps and played around. My little helper even got in on the action. She wanted to help me sew, so I let her sit on my lap a bit while I sewed and would let her push the button to raise the needle when I was at a stopping point.
Here is a sneak peak at my project, you will have to check back to see the finished project.
I think I may have also come up with a use for the rest of my 2.5" squares in my box, even though the pattern calls for 2 7/8" squares mine will just be a little/lot smaller.
It is called Scrap Sensations by McCalls. I think it would be a lovely throw quilt or even a great addition to the bed. We only have one quilt for our bed and I would like to have options so that I don't 'wear' out a quilt before its time. I like to change things up anyways and since there isn't a good way to re-arrange furniture where we live, I will just have to change up the decor.

what to do, what to do...
This past week has been rough. my dear hubby's grandma passed away on Thursday last week and will be laid to rest today. I wish there was some way that I could get to the funeral and make it home to get my son off the bus, but I don't see any way that is possible. With my luck I would get hung up in traffic or with a traffic ticket and well neither of those would be a good situation.
I'm going to try and pass some time with sewing therapy. I don't have a specific pattern I am going to work on, but I have a box with thousands of 2.5" squares in it.
I'm going to sort some out maybe or maybe not and just start sewing some HST's (half square triangles) and see where I end up. i have seen some cute project using HST's and I know that I will need a lot more of them than most of the projects I have seen, but it will use up some of the scraps and who knows I might just end up with a Christmas present for someone or if I can't think of a good person for it to go to then I might just do a giveaway here.
I'm also still trying to come up with something that doesn't look to 'baby' for my son for Christmas out of these fabrics. I finally hit me that he will be 5 1/2 come Christmas and my inspiration print is more suited for maybe a 2-3 year old :(
I have a yard of all the fabrics except for the large Checkered print and I only have a half yard of that. I know I will have to buy some more fabrics to complete the project because he has a full sized bed and I want the quilt for his bed.

Fabric Friday
I really don't have anything exciting to write about today. So I thought I would just share some fabric yummy-ness with you.
I had to make a stop at the local Jo-ann Fabrics.
I went in for..
and came out with....
I need to start sewing some of this stuff up before my hubby realizes how much fabric I really have.
I did cut out some pants for my daughter last night that I'm about to sew up.
and the other day I was at the LQS (local quilt shop) and came home with these beauties.
The blue was just a remenant

Wonderful Wednesday
I'm not working on anything special right now.
I finished up the hand sewn, hand quilted labor of love yesterday. I'm so happy to be completely done with it.
Yesterday was such a beautiful day that we spent many hours outside. Here are just a few pictures of the beautiful day.
There is nothing more beautiful in a fairly landlocked state than a beautiful sunset over the lake.

Shameless begging
I need your vote! If you have facebook Join the group https://www.facebook.com/group s/FabricProblem and vote for my snowman mug rug. If I win I get a $30 gift certificate to my choice of fabric stores. You don't have to stay a member you can opt to leave after the winner is announced and their feelings won't be hurt. Today is also my son's very first day of school. He was so excited to go and no tears were shed as mommy left him in his class room. His sister did cry but not because we were leaving big brother behind, but because she want to play on the park (aka playground).

Ok so, it isn't the greatest of pictures because I was carrying the youngest and trying to walk and snap a picture at the same time.

I'm Baaaaack!
The 8+ year old computer lives again and I have to admit I haven't done much sewing other than the start of the cute snowman mug rug I started and have yet to finish. I really dislike posting from my phone, but I know I can do it if need be, like when the hubby are on vacation and I get inspired. I was motivated by Heidi over at Boys, Buttons, and Butterflies and her recent trip to Hawaii, she visited a quilt shop or two while on the islands. I told my hubby that I wanted to go to some quilt shops in Las Vegas when we take our vacation in October, and he got quite irritated with me. Why I don't know, but I plan on laying down the law and telling him that I am going whether he wants to join me or not. He always seems to complain that I never want to do anything but when I say something I want to do he rolls his eyes and asks if I'm kidding.
I have done some searching of the quilt shops in Vegas and found that they have a quilt shop hop, how fun would that be to do? Really something for ME! He has been to Vegas before and wants todrag show me all of the cool stuff out there, Hoover dam, the Grand Canyon really I could care less. We are going to be there for 7 days, I'm sure I could find a few hours in there on one day to do it.
Sorry for no pictures today, but there may be a photo overload tomorrow since it is my son's first day of Kindergarten. Happy sewing everyone.

Techy Monday
Todays post is coming from my phone, the computer was smelling hot so I'm not taking any chances.
I didn't get any sewing in over the weekend but I did play with the Go! Baby and hope to have a fun creation to share tomorrow.

Friday's finish, 8/5/2011
I managed to finish the memory quilt and I love love love, how it turned out.
The excitement I had for being able to print my own labels has disappeared along with the ink that washed out when I washed the quilt. I did however make a better label per say by hand stitching it. I say better because I feel I put more love into it.
I've spent the past couple of days entertaining the kids. Today if they are good we will take them to the local dirt track tonight and watch the World of Outlaws since they are in town. I hope everyone has a great weekend.

Taking a day off
I've been obsessively sewing the past few days so I could finish the memory quilt. I finished sewing down the binding last night so I'm going to take the day off from sewing and do some fun stuff with the kids. It has been so hot here that we haven't been able to get out much, so as long as the rain holds off we will be out running around.
I will post pictures of the finished memory quilt tomorrow. Have a great day everyone!

almost finished projects and a chance to win.
I hope everyone had a great and productive weekend. I was able to finish the quilting on the hand sewn beauty. I've picked out what I'm going to use for the binding, and I think the best part of the binding fabric is, it was in my stash, so I didn't have to make a trip to the store with the kids and spend more money.

I was also able to finish the memory quilt top on Saturday, and I have it all basted (spray) and ready for the machine so it can be quilted. I hope I can get that done today. Do you hear that my darling children, mommy has a goal so please be good.
It was a bit breezy Saturday when I had hubby hold this up for its mug shot.
Jenna over at SewHappyGeek has several chances for you to win some lovely fabric from the Fat Quarter Shop, so hop on over to her blog and find out how to win.
