A Sliver of You

For My Mother

Sharon Anne Mayforth

June 29, 1937-March 4, 2025

If I could become just a sliver of you

Just one errant ray of the light you emit

Just a dash of the kindness you freely dole out

Just a glint of the joy you scatter like glitter

If I could become just a crumb from your cake

Just one sweet gesture of the grace you bestow

Just a speck of the patience that you demonstrate

Just a dollop of the love you show

I would step out the door and change the world

I would impact all that I meet for good

If I could become just a sliver of you

I would

I will

Dear Mother

The feature pic is my mother as a young woman. This is a poem I gave her one Mother’s Day. Her response was, “I love you with all my heart.” She went home to be with the Lord on March 4th and I miss her something fierce. I’m so glad I took the time to tell her what she meant to me. Her Celebration of Life is still available online for a year’s time, if you missed it and want to watch the good bits. Click here and scroll down past the eulogy. Posts come out when I feel like it, and I haven’t felt much like it lately, because I’ve been crying and reminiscing. A post on my experience with grief is in the works. 🙂 Scroll down to the bottom of the page to follow me or sign up to receive my posts via email. Listen to my posts on Spotify. Stood Up

I waited for you

But you didn’t come

By the old shed

The one that looks as if it’s been weeping

You knew I was waiting

But still you didn’t come

Now I’m weeping, too

😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

In the Way

You can make a plan

But don’t expect it to unfold exactly as you’ve planned it

Plans are dreams, suggestions, projections

The outcome only possible, maybe probable, but not inevitable

Reality is malleable

Expect bumps in the road

And trips and falls

And sniffles

And rain

A hurricane, perhaps

Expect distractions and detours

And all out roadblocks

Expect to be perplexed and, even, vexed

Expect a mess

Expect that no one will notice or give a diddly dam

Or maybe just the opposite

Expect naysayers and competitors

The odd compatriot

Maybe, if you’re lucky, your own little cheering section

Expect to change your plans

Expect your plans and your subsequent acts to change you

Expect the unexpected

And your expectations will be met at every twisty turn

Obstacles are a gift

Colour Happy

I giggle for pink 💓☺️

And purple makes me positively gush ☔️😊

A little plum will drive the gloom from any room 🍇😁

And blue, ‘tis true, will calm and soften up the hardest heart 💙😌

While red will add romance and make you wanna do the cha cha 💃

Green, it doesn’t call out to be seen

But glimmers quietly demure 🌿

Orange warms with winning zip 🍊

And yellow, what a happy fellow, brightens as it comes and goes 🌞

Black, it frightens 🕷😱

White illuminates and shimmers peace 🕊✌🏻

Give me all the colours, please 🌈

Think I’ll make a sundae

Anyone for sprinkles 🍨

💓☺️☔️😊🍇😁💙😌💃🌿 🍊🌞🕷😱🕊✌🏻🌈🍨

Reaching Out

I was in an airport at the beginning of December of last year, flying off to visit my mother and sister, when an attractive, rather edgy, young woman came up to me, plunked her luggage down next to mine and asked if I would watch it for her while she used the restroom. I said, “Of course,” shaking my head a bit, more to wake myself up than an affirmation and gave her as much of a smile as I could muster. I often fly coming off the night shift because that day, for me, is a wasted one anyway and I just need to stay awake long enough to board the plane. By the time we’re in the air, I’m already deep dozing. I wear a neck pillow underneath my chin to keep me from drooling on the unfortunate person next to me and wake up with the announcement that the plane is about to land. When this interesting gal came back, she said she was going over to get a drink and asked if I wanted something. I was probably glazed over at that point, said, “No, but thanks so much” and she took her things and went off in search of refreshment. I regret this encounter. Continue reading “Reaching Out”
