Today, Katie had her 6 year checkup with her primary care doctor.
I still do not like Katie's primary care doctor and I REALLY need to make the time to find her a new one. I have been saying this since she was diagnosed in 2008!!! But, I figured she was fully under the care of Dr. Keuker, so I didn't worry about it. Well, that really isn't the case anymore, so I really need to switch. But, I digress...
Mostly everything checked out OK with Katie today.
She weighed in at 48 pounds with a height of 3 feet & 7.5 inches!
I told her doctor that she is ready to start catching up on her immunizations and asked if she had received the paperwork from the oncology clinic. To which she wasn't sure, but she would look into it. OK, now Katie had her titers taken last OCTOBER...how could she not have received them by now??? UGH! I told her that the oncology clinic is recommending that Katie just get her regular 4-6 year booster, but that I wanted her to look over the paperwork to see if she agrees with that recommendation. So, we said we would wait to see what the paperwork says before doing anything.
Next came the hearing & vision test. Hearing was fine, but Katie failed the vision test. She knows her letters, but when asked what they were from across the room, she couldn't see the smaller lines. Poor kid, I thought she was going to cry. So, now we need to make an appointment with an eye doctor. Poor kid... She has already told me that she "WILL NOT WEAR GLASSES" because she thinks all the kids will make fun of her. UGH!
I told her we would talk about it after we find out what the eye doctor has to say. So, we have tabled that fight for now...
***UPDATE 4/19
Katie's doctor called to let me know that she also recommends that Katie get the 4-6 year booster, which will be 4 shots...OWIE!!! She said that we could do it in a couple of visits or all at once, whatever we wanted to do. I told her that I would talk to Katie and let her decide what she wanted to do and that I would have to call back to make an appointment once I talked to her.
Probably sounds crazy to let a 6 year old make this decision, but after everything that she has been through, I figure it's good to let her have some say in what happens to her body. When I told her that she needed to get 4 shots, she started screaming and crying, but I told her that she could decide if she wanted to get them all at once or at 2 different visits. We discussed the pros and cons of both options, but she was too upset to discuss it too much, so I told her that she didn't need to make the decision right now and that she could take some time to think about it.
***UPDATE 4/24
Katie finally decided that she wants to get all the shots done and over with all in one visit. She took some time to think about it and every time we talked about, she would yell and cry. But, after much deliberation, she finally told me this morning that she had decided to get them all done at once. I am so proud of my brave little/big girl.
