Nadene (NZ) -> Kate (CA)

Hello Nadene!
Nice sink drain.

This brooch is not meant for me. It is large. I am small. It is intricate and delicate looking and in its own right a sculpture, but we were not a match. That is the sad truth. I looked like the wearer of a large third breast, and felt tempted to wear the brooch as a bunny tail, if wear it at all. Sorry. How awful of me. After one male friend described it as reminding him of a sink drain I became even more disheartened. But, I did find it a match. And that, my friend, is the real the story.

The match is a lovely lady, let’s call her Judy, who lives in San Francisco and works at a jewelry store full of beautifully hand-crafted pieces from near and far. She was wearing a gorgeous sweater, a cream woolen jersey, and a huge smile. We talked for some time about the genius that is the concept of broachofthemonth club and rarefungalbehaviour and I showed her the sink-drain brooch that had been causing me quite some heartache. The moment as Judy released her hands away from the pin to reveal the brooch against her jersey… well… I can only tell you that I felt pure happiness. It IS a brooch, and not merely a sculpture. It CAN be worn and look stunning.

And so, with the bad and then the good experienced and many months in possession of this piece, I am sad to see it fly out of my hands to someone else. But, naturally thrilled to think of it soon to be in the hands of that special someone and explored, investigated, and abhorred, or adored by them. I love rarefungalbehaviour. Thank you!

Status May 2010

I hope that your winter has treated you well.  Spring should be in full spring, according to the brooch project, and these are your final two weeks with the brooches. Please aim to have them in the mail, travelling back to NZ by June 1st.   The brooches will stay in NZ until December 2010.

It is getting very dark, very early down here and we need some good brooch vibes to brighten the dark winter nights.  We would all love to hear your adventures.

(Note: PS -my apologies we had some rearranging..)
I'm not sure how this happened but I have a photo of Jayna at home (just what is that stuff on the ground under the swing Jayna?)and the brooch, in Gisborne, NZ! Even more thrilling - the very first time I wore it - to work on a Monday morning - there were a couple of old guys in the library - where I work, before opening time, who were putting up a display for the Forest and Bird Society. I'm saying 'greetings' and other polite things and the older of the old guys, says "Did you get that thing off the forest floor?" Laughs to himself. The other old guy comes over for a look and they launch into a discussion about the very type of fungi the brooch is reminiscent of. I let them know how on to it they are , but they just shake their heads. They've seen it all now. Although it seemed irrelevant that the thing is a brooch, an actual wearable thing, their discussion is what is important here. That would be just about the best response ever to a brooch.

Status going into the New Year.

The brooches have been then worn by their NZ owners for the winter and have all been sent back to the Northern hemisphere to begin their winter life there. There were a few lost brooches, two still in transit  and one wearer gone missing or on holiday.  Many NZ co-owners got very creative with their parcels to the north, sending pictures of themselves wearing the brooch, or little gifts from Aotearoa.

I love that Chirs has gone to the trouble to include the picture of Doug in his photo.
It is shaping up to be a lovely exchange.
