Dublin Photo Diary

1. Crepes with a friend // 2. The cutest dungarees from River Island // 3. My outfit yesterday // 4. Valentino Heels in BT's // 5. Bershka cropped leather jacket // 6. Behind the scenes shot of my shoot with Stellar

Purchases: 1. Mac // 2. Topshop // 3. River Island // 4. Boohoo

I've spent the last few days in Dublin -which was such a nice little break away. I got to meet with some friends, did a festival-themed shoot with Stellar Magazine and of course, ate in some delicious restaurants & cafes. This time next week, I'm going to be on a plane to New York -so as you can imagine, I also had some last minute shopping to do. Being honest, I wasn't overly wowed by the selection in the shops, but I did pick up a few basic pieces that I'll be able to wear to my internship. Number one on my list to get was a comfortable (but nice) pair of shoes and so I was really happy to find white & gold loafers in River Island. They're really nice on and also very comfortable. I also picked up some Mac highlighter (which I can't wait to try tonight) and some (on-sale) Topshop gold cigarette trousers.

When I arrived back home to Kerry, I was greeted with a package from Boohoo.com. The amazing girls at Boohoo saw my NYC Wishlist blog post last week and sent me one of the bags I had included as a going away present! It's going to be absolutely perfect for my Summer in NYC! Also, Boohoo have been nominated for 'The Best Online Retailer' at the ITV Lorraine Awards -so if you love Boohoo as much as I do, you can vote for them here.

Hope you're all having a lovely weekend. I'm off out for dinner and drinks tonight, as it's my last weekend at home. Just one more week -can't believe it!

Flower Child

Vintage Floral Waistcoat (similar) // Next White T-shirt (similar) // Warehouse Jeans //Topshop Sunnies  (love these too)// Topshop Shoes (Sold out -but similar here) //Ebay Fedora Hat (similar)

Best thing about this time of year? The flowers. It's such a pleasure to photograph outfit posts when there are such pretty colours everywhere. Yesterday's post was a little gloomy, but today's definitely has a Spring/Summer feeling to it! I've spent the day packing for my move to NYC and the one thing that I've noticed is that I really do love my vintage waistcoats. I picked up this floral one at the Brooklyn Flea Market in Williamsburg last Summer and I'm hoping to find many more this time around. Another thing I've noticed is that's there are FAR too many pairs of shoes that I want to bring with me. Packing a Summer wardrobe into just one suitcase is proving to be very difficult indeed!

I'm off to Dublin tomorrow to do some shopping and a street-style shoot with Stellar Magazine. So be sure to keep an eye on my Instagram (@retroflame) as I'll be updating that the most during the next few days.

Hope you've all had a nice Thursday!

Freedom

Miss Selfridge Black Jeans // Vintage Striped Cardigan //  GoJane Black & Gold Heels // Ebay Fedora Hat // Retro Flame Shop Statement Necklace (limited stock left) // Retro Flame Shop Sunglasses (coming soon)

So happy to be back doing outfit posts! The weather has been so crazy lately -one minute it's really sunny and the next it's pouring rain, so I shot this post literally in between showers. It's pretty clear that it's still not time to put away all our winter clothes yet here in Ireland! My aunt, Bernadette, gave me this striped cardigan as a present -she got it years ago when she lived in New York. I'll always love those pieces with a little story behind them! I haven't taken this necklace off lately and there are still a limited few available on The Retro Flame Shop and the sunnies that I'm wearing will also be available very soon.

I really had forgotten how much I love doing outfit posts! I also had forgotten how much I love having spare time to dedicate to this blog of mine. Since finishing exams/college, I've really had a chance to get back into things and it's so nice to be doing something that I genuinely enjoy. It's been a busy week so far and I'm off to Dublin this weekend to do a street style shoot with Stellar Magazine, so it's definitely all-a-go at the moment.

I hope you're all having a lovely week too and for those of you still doing exams, hopefully they are all going great!

Retro Flame Shop: Jewellery

Hope you've all had a lovely weekend! Here's a quick post to show you what I've been up to today -I've spent the past few hours purchasing some brand NEW STOCK for the Retro Flame Shop. I am too excited for this order to arrive -how amazing are those statement necklaces? I also ordered some vintage style collar-accessories and some dainty little rings. Lately, I'm loving really delicate rings so I can't wait for these to arrive. Thank you to everyone who has purchased so far -there is now only 1 style left on the store here. Also, if there are any of the necklaces that you would like me to re-stock, just let me know!

This new stock should arrive in the next few weeks, but if anyone would like to put any of it on hold, just send me a message on my Facebook Page or email me at theretroflame@gmail.com

Hope you all had a lovely weekend!

Wishlist: NYC Accessory Basics

Topshop B&W Sandals //  Topshop Fedora Hat // Chanel Bag // Topshop White Heels // Boohoo Cream Tote Bag // Asos Statement Necklace// Asos Black and Gold Sunglasses // Boohoo Black Bag

Ok so it's just two weeks until I'm moving to New York for the Summer -I can't believe it's so close! So I've started to do a little online shopping in preparation. As you know, I spent last Summer there also and definitely learned the importance of having good 'basic' pieces. New Yorkers love their investment pieces and this especially applies when it comes to accessories. I'm planning on packing lots of simple dresses and simple clothing in general, so I'm on the search for some affordable but chic shoes, bags, sunnies and jewellery.

As I'm interning, I'll have to bring a selection of heels but because I'm only bringing one suitcase I'll have to pack heels which will bring me from day to night. I've invested in a few pairs recently but I also adore the Topshop ones above -especially the plain white ones which are the ultimate all-rounder. My typical day in New York last Summer would involve me leaving my house at 7/8am and often not returning back until late that night, so I definitely learned all about the magic of big bags! You need to be able to carry whatever you need for the full day, so I love the size of the Boohoo bags on this wishlist. Oh and lets not forget that candy pink chanel bag -I've never come across something as cute!! I'll also be packing my new favourite hat, the Fedora, lots of Sunnies (you can never have too many in NYC) and of course, a selection of statement necklaces - including a few from my Retro Flame Shop. Oh and incase you missed it, I've sourced some really cool sunglasses for the store, so keep an eye out for those in the coming weeks.

Lastly, I recently saw Jennifer Lawrence rocking the simple metallic belt trend and since then I'm on a mad search for a similar one. I don't think you can ever go wrong with a simple gold belt, so do let me know if you've seen one like it.

Now all I have to do is win the lotto in the next two weeks....

Hope you've all been having a great week!

My College/University Path

On Friday, I mentioned that I was thinking about doing a post all about the particular 'College/University Path' I took over the last four years. I often receive emails from people asking me about the different fashion courses out there and how to get 'into fashion' -so this is a post which will hopefully be helpful to many of you. Firstly however, I do want to stress that college/university is always such a different experience for everyone and what works for one person may not work for another -so the experience I've had might not be perfect for you, but hopefully it will at least provide you with some guidance/inspiration. During the past four years, I've been in three different colleges -so I'm going to go through each year separately so that you can get an idea of the experience I've had.

Year 1: 1st year Commerce and Spanish in UCC
When I was in my final year of school, I had really wanted to go on to study fashion, but the only options that were available to me here in Ireland (that I knew of at the time) were 'Fashion Design' courses. For those of you who know me really well, you'll know that I struggle to draw even a stick-person, so fashion design was never going to go down well. I'd consider myself to be creative, but creative with a very business-orientated mind, so it was fashion business (marketing, buying, PR, event management) that I really wanted to study. I had always been quite academic and business & languages were my favourite subjects throughout school, so I decided to apply for 'Commerce and Spanish' in UCC in Cork. Even though I spent my year studying Commerce, I became heavily involved in the college 'Fashion Society' and helped to organize many events and shows throughout the year. I still stayed dedicated to my course and came out with good results -but I couldn't' help but think that my heart just wasn't in it after I had completed the year. I met a friend while I was in UCC who had told me about a fashion business course in Galway which would just take a year -so during the Summer after my 1st year in Cork, I applied for the fashion course and started that September!

Year 2: Fashion Industry Practice in GTI
I'm not going to lie and say that some people didn't try to talk me out of deferring my Commerce course -they did! I guess it was a bit of a risky move and definitely not the 'norm', but as I said my heart wasn't fully in Commerce at the time or even in Cork -so I made the decision and moved to Galway. Looking back now (which I do so often) -it was undoubtedly the best decision I will probably ever make! I went into the fashion course with very little experience but came out of it a completely different person -much more confident, determined and more business-minded than I ever could have imagined. I studied Fashion Buying, Fashion Marketing/PR, Fashion Styling, Fashion Media, Event Management and Graphic Design and realized that the marketing, event management and styling aspects were the areas I wanted to pursue a career in. It's the kind of course that will have you working 24/7 and I definitely had to put everything else in my life on hold for a little bit. But like everything, if you truly love what you're doing and don't mind getting up to go to college each day -life is a lot easier. You can see from the photos below that we did the most fun project work and as well as this, the course allowed me to gain experience in photo shoots, fashion shows and so much more! If you're looking for a course to help you decide which exact area of the fashion industry you like best, you should definitely consider this one! Sometimes we all need that little push and this was definitely mine.

LOVE this!

Year 3 & 4: 2nd and 3rd Year Commerce in NUI Galway
After being immersed in the world of fashion for a full year, it definitely made me realize that the fashion industry is extremely cut-throat (to say the least) and in order to succeed, you need to be savvy, business-orientated and very knowledgable. I think that many people often forget that fashion is a business and along with all the creativity comes a need for a focused and business-orientated outlook on things. The fashion course in GTI, undoubtedly, allowed me to see what I wanted to do in the long-run and it made me realize that having a business degree along with my fashion experience was definitely the wisest option. So...back to Commerce I went! This time however, I continued my Commerce studies in Galway, where I have specialized in Marketing. I had deferred my course after 1st year in UCC, so I was allowed to go straight into 2nd year which was a little daunting as I didn't know anyone but everything turned out just perfect and I've met the nicest of people since then. As I mentioned, I just never fully clicked with college in Cork and I think that this became even more apparent when I realized how amazing my time in Galway ended up being!

Work Experience
I often get asked what's more important -qualifications of work experience? My answer -a mix of both. I'm a big believer in work experience and definitely don't think it's possible to succeed in this industry without it. During the past 4 years, I've had 6 internships (Styling with Georgina Vahey and Olivia Jade Horner, Event Management with Upfront Model Management, PR with Natalie B Coleman and Foundfuture (NYC) and NY fashion week intern with Whitney Port) which have taught me more than I ever could have imagined. It's very important to put yourself out there and never underestimate the power of Networking. If you make a good impression, you never know where it will take you!

After 4 years of college, my main pieces of advice for you are:
-Never stick with a course/college that you don't 100% love -there are always other options.
-Don't commit to a course until you have gained some sort of experience in that chosen area.
-Put your heart and soul into whatever it is you are doing. There is never any point doing something only half-right.
-Above all, enjoy it! It's an experience that you will never forget and if you go about it in the right away, you won't ever want to finish.

I really hope that this has been helpful for you and if there is anything that maybe I didn't cover, feel free to email me at theretroflame@gmail.com. I have my final two exams this week -so it's definitely a very bitter-sweet feeling to actually be finishing for good. After being in 3 different colleges, I've had the chance to meet so many amazing people and I honestly wouldn't have done it any other way. It's good to do things a little different, in my opinion, -it ensures you never get bored! And so the big question is: what now? I'm definitely not 100% sure where the next few years will take me -what job, what country, what experiences -but if it is half as fun as the past 4 years I've just had, I'll be a very happy girl indeed!

Hope you've all had a lovely weekend,

April Aesthetic: In Bloom

So this is the second of my 'monthly moodboard' posts. If you missed my March one, you can see it right Here. April is a month that always gets me excited about Summer -plans get finalized, Summer stock hits the stores and above all -the most beautiful flowers begin to bloom. My 'April Aesthetic ' board on Pinterest is full of girly colors, floral prints, Summer tones and Fedora hats. I'm not the type of person who will wear head-to-toe florals, but this Summer I can't wait to incorporate some into my outfits. I'm also STILL on the search for the perfect Fedora Hat and it's looking like I might just have to wait until I get back to New York to find it. I must admit that I'm really beginning to tire of the high-street stores and I'm feeling very uninspired about what they have to offer as of late. I don't know if it's just me but none of the current trends are making me say 'Wow' and I've never been one to purchase just for the sake of it! So I'm looking forward to getting back to New York (just 3 more weeks to go!) and finding pieces that will hopefully make me excited about fashion once again!

Hope you're all having a lovely weekend!

Retro Flame Store - Jewellery

L-R: Here, Here, Here & Here.

I mentioned a few weeks ago that I would be adding a 'Jewellery' section to my online store. The necklaces arrived this week and I'm so delighted with them! I sourced five different styles (1 is currently sold out) and I'm having to stop myself from keeping one of each! The response has been fantastic and so it looks like I'll be stocking even more styles in the coming weeks. There are still a few available, so if you fancy one (or even all four) you can purchase it right HERE.

It's a long weekend here in Ireland, so that means I have extra time to do some blogging. I've recently bought a lot of new clothes and especially shoes (I blame my exams) so I have a few outfit posts lined up. I'm also going on a little road trip tomorrow with two of my friends, so it's going to be a busy but fun weekend!

Happy Friday!

They've posted about me on their Website (a feature and on the homepage!) and also on their Facebook pageTwitter, so it's such fantastic coverage and I'm thrilled!

Outfit Post: Bejewelled

Vintage Jacket // Forever21 Skirt // Topshop Shoes

I'm still currently in the middle of exams, but I came home to Kerry today after my exam this morning and decided to squeeze in a quick outfit post to show you a typical college outfit of mine. I never usually get the chance to photograph what I wear to college, so I figured it would be a nice change. This jacket is undoubtedly my all-time favourite vintage find that I picked up in NYC and I'm already so excited just thinking about the vintage shopping I'll be doing again this Summer. New York really does bring it to a whole new level!

After this crazy (and sleepless) week of exams, I've genuinely never been so excited to see the weekend. Hope you all have a good one!

New in.

GoJane.com Heels

Ok so I started my exams this morning (1 down, 5 to go) and decided afterwards to go and buy myself a new pair of heels. Logical enough, yes? We all know that exams are horrible (to put it lightly) so I needed a little pick me up and nothing ever cheers me up more than a new pair of shoes...and I must say that these have really gone the extra mile! The gold detail and perspex heel had me from the very start and I just couldn't resist. Also, they look so much more expensive than they actually were so I feel that they are definitely a justified purchase. I wonder how many more pairs I'll be able to justify before these exams finish?

Hope you're all having a nice Thursday,

Stylishly yours,

Huge congratulations to Kiah on winning £250 to spend on boohoo.com. I'm not going to lie, I'm insanely jealous, along with a lot of my readers I'm sure! I wish I could give you all something -but don't worry, I'm already in the process of planning the next giveaway, so maybe it'll be your luck next time :)

Apologies that the blog has been a little quiet in the last few days, I'm currently studying for exams so I've been crazy busy. But I have a few posts planned for the next few days and also don't forget to keep an eye out for the brand new 'Jewellery Section' on The Retro Flame Shop. Summer '13 NYC Internship

As you all know, I'm going back to New York next month for another Summer and I've just received an extremely exciting email to confirm that I'll once again be a fashion intern in my favourite city! I've been applying for internships for the past few weeks and one of the companies I applied to is my all-time-favourite online fashion bible - refinery29.com. They emailed me back on Wednesday, I had an interview over the phone today and I've just recieved the email to say that I got the position!! I genuinely couldn't be more excited.

Before I moved to New York, I didn't know a lot about refinery29, but it definitely wasn't long before it became my go-to website (and the first website I checked every single morning) for anything related to fashion, events, etc. and I was even featured on the site a few times myself which you can see here and hereWhen I moved home from New York last September, I wrote a list consisting of all the companies/brands I want to work with in the next few years and one of those companies was Refinery29. So with a bit of perseverance it has happened!! I move back to New York on May 25th and I start the internship on May 27th. I actually can't hold in the excitement! Also, their offices are in my absolute favourite part of the city -The East Village.

I'll be working with the Brand Integration and Marketing department which will involve developing and initiating collaborations for the site -with bloggers, celebrities, stores, brands, etc. and I'll also be working on the photo-shoot and event coordination side of things. For someone with both a fashion and business background -this is honestly my dream internship and is the kind of work that I want to get into in the long-term. So I'm excited to see what doors this will possibly open for me in the future.

Refinery29 has bases in New York, Los Angeles, San Fransisco, Chicago...and has recently just launched in London! It receives over 1 Billion pages views a year and has thousands and thousands of followers on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. So to be given the opportunity to work with such a successful company has put a permanent smile on my face!

So I hope that you'll stick around with me for this exciting journey! You can look forward to some more 'NYC Internship Diaries' throughout the Summer and I have a feeling there is going to be even more to share this time around.

Here's to big dreams!

Stylishly yours,

Erika x

Outfit Post: Serenity

Zara Top // GoJane.com Sunnies // Vintage Necklace

So this is the last of my outfit posts from Vilamoura -which was photographed on our last day there. I know I mentioned it before, but the beach was definitely one of the nicest I had ever been to and we had such a laugh taking these photos. On a little side note, I must mention that I have the worlds' most patient family. My Mom and Sister (who you can see in the photo above) were so good to take all my photos while we were away. Fellow bloggers who are reading this will totally understand when I say that finding someone to take your photos can often be the most difficult part of blogging. So I'm very grateful to anyone who has helped me out! You've seen this Zara top in a previous outfit post, but it was so nice to be able to ditch the leggings for shorts this time around. I really do love Winter dressing, but I must admit it's nice to finally shed a few layers once the weather becomes good again. I'm already planning my NYC Summer outfits!

I'll have a little holiday photo diary up in the next few days with some other random photos from my trip.

Hope you're having a lovely week,

Stylishly yours,

Erika x

Weekend Photo Diary

Warehouse Jeans // Vera Moda Jumper // H&M Shirt // La Bolsa UK Bag

The Maritime Hotel, Bantry

My Instagram Pics (@retroflame)

I mentioned in yesterday's post that my boyfriend and I went on a little road trip to Bantry on Friday. It was very spur of the moment and we literally just booked it two days before, but isn't it always the random trips that are the best? On the way there we stopped at a pancake house called, The Strawberry Field, which is just about 30 minutes from Killarney and is a real little gem! My sister had been there a few weeks back and hasn't stopped talking about it since, so I was so glad to finally see it for myself. If you follow me on Instagram (@retroflame) you might have noticed that I have a slight obsession with pancakes/crepes so this little restaurant was like heaven to me! The menu seemed to go on forever, but in the end I went for one with hazelnut praline (tasted like Kinder Beuno) and vanilla ice-cream.

Friday was a really beautiful day here in Ireland so the drive to Bantry was such a treat. I think that when you're from Ireland, you sometimes forget that it's actually a pretty nice place with genuinely breath-taking views. So this trip definitely reminded me that maybe living here isn't that bad after all (when the weather's good that is). In Bantry, we stayed in a hotel called, The Maritime, which was honestly one of the nicest hotels I've stayed in in a long long time! The decor, the service, the food (we got breakfast in bed on Saturday -such a treat) and the views left me wishing I was able to stay for longer! I'll definitely be returning very soon.

Until then though, it's back to reality and back to study. I'm currently in my final year of Commerce (Business) and exam season is just around the corner. So the blog might be a little quieter than usual for the next few weeks, but I'll be sure to make up for it once they're over and it's time to go to NYC!

Hope you've all had a lovely weekend too!

Stylishly yours,

Erika x
