We thought we'd indulge our daughter's love of marine life with a pet...so we bought this giant octopus. Isn't it great?! We just know this will help her learn responsibility and compassion as well as respect and awe for nature. Ok, really this is just another picture from our trip. While in San Diego we also took in the Birch Aquarium at Scripps and this is one of the many interesting things we saw.

This was my other option for a fake-out first pet posting...this is a picture I took of what is called a Sea Dragon. I don't know how I went __ years without ever hearing of such a creature. It is truly fascinating...it looks to me like the hybrid of a sea horse and walking stick...while I doubt that is possible due to the whole "where do a fish and a bird live" quandry I guess I have to just settle for the more typical natural selection theory that this thing developed out of its need to blend in with its surroundings. It is very effective...we looked at the tank for several seconds before we realized what we were supposed to be seeing.

And here is the real pet....a nice purple and red beta fish. Nice because it is cheap and can survive in a small plastic cup and 3 bucks worth of pebble food seems to be lasting a long time. Despite the adequacy of a small cup I upgraded our fish to a luxury suite (really its just the family cookie jar of my childhood recycled to be a fish bowl - I love a good remodel job). We started naming this fish but it belongs to Louisa so we figured we'd leave it up to her. And after several weeks, Red Fishy is still alive, well and seems to be a regular member of the family after surviving several of his 2 year-old owners fishing expeditions. Lucky for him, a two-year old just doesn't quite have the reflexes to catch a fish with her bare hands...I think.
