VanCott Clan Christmas PARTY!

We sure missed you, Mom & Dad at the VanCott Clan Christmas Party!  Good food, lots of treats...sorta skipped the talent show--and the Nativity--but we did sing all the carols, does that count?  We kinda got sidetracked playing our new favorite family fun game "MINUTE TO WIN IT!"

Joseph ran the show and Danny brought his computer and projector with the official music and countdown---soooooo fun!!  With 58 people it was a little crazy, but I did capture two of the games on video:  The first is a game where Johnny, Brian, Duane & Rob have a nylon sock on their heads.  The sock has a tennis ball at the bottom of it and they are trying to knock over a row of cups with just the ball.

The second video will not upload--I'll try again tomorrow.  It is of Mary, Holly, Liz & Olivia trying to "bounce" out 10 wiffle balls that are in a Kleenex box strapped to their backs.....HILARIOUS!
Happy we got to hear from you guys at the end. Hope the baptism was wonderful.  Love you guys!  Merry Christmas!

CHRISTMAS Decor

I never did get any pictures of my decor up. I like how things turned out this year.  We had a several new traditions start:

1.  Fun--kid friendly tree.  Apparently my homemade ornaments and white lights were not particularly "fun" according to Brent----whatever.  Anyway, I re-strung the tree with colored lights, added a few BIG round bulbs for extra FUN and we bought some SUPER F.U.N. kid ornaments that I probably would have drooled over as a kid.  The result--(which looks SO much better in person)
My old boring stuff was transferred to our largest Alpine tree which looks very lovely in the entry.
#2 I added a star wall behind my Nativity.  We have many Nativity sets--most of them kid friendly so they can enjoy setting them up, but my nice set sits on the entry table.  I have wanted to somehow put a large star above it but never quite knew what to do.  I saw this one in the craft store and had an idea...I kinda like how it turned out!  I think this will definitely be a new tradition.

#3  I had an extra garland and lots of ornaments I bought at a garage sale a couple years ago.  Jenna had a great idea and I think it turned out pretty.

#4 The Holiday shelf.  I started this holiday shelf last Christmas.  Each month is a new theme and it has been so fun.  This year I had just gotten back from Disneyland and I think I may have been channeling the "It's a Small World" ride when I set this up the day after we got back....it's very glittery and sparkly--the picture just doesn't quite capture that.

One last one of Jenna in front of the super fun tree!
Now...on top of all the Christmas decorating and shopping, I threw in 2 room makeovers!  My room and Gavin's room.  I'm exhausted.  I haven't taken pictures of them yet, but I will...

A very MAGICAL Thanksgiving

We got spoiled this Thanksgiving.  Grandpa & Grandma Smith took all the Smith clan to DISNEYLAND!  I am kicking myself for not getting more pictures, but here are a few I did capture:

1. Turkey dinner & Bellagio Water show with Bonnie & John.  We stayed in Vegas on the way down.  Just looking at that Honey Baked Ham is making my mouth water--so good!--Oh!! and the banana cream pie!!!  Great way to start my Food-cation.

and I had to include this cute shot I got of Bon & John at Disneyland--cute!
2. COUSINS!  The kids don't get to see Bronx, Belle & Eva very often.  Jenna had Eva in a head lock hug whenever possible!
3. The Disneyland Hotel pool.  If Brent had his way, we would have spent the entire trip just like this:
The kids loved it too--heated pools, water slides, nice hot tub.  It was a great break from the mad house that was Disneyland.  This is Jenna doing her ALL TIME FAVORITE swimming gag---"The SHARK"

4. A hotel across the street from the park!  After a long day of magic, it was nice to only have to carry sleeping beauty for 5 minutes!  Seriously--only way to go!

5. GIANT Lego store!  Gavin was in Heaven!  In fact, Grandma bought him a set the last night we were there and he opted to stay back at the hotel with me and build it instead of one last night in Disneyland!  That's true love.
Super fun trip!  Thank you Grandpa & Grandma!

11-11-11--How can I NOT post!

I know I'm a true VanCott because everything in me is SCREAMING, "Start a diet!  It's 11-11-11!!"  I wish I was motivated to do that...instead, I think I will mark this epic day with an epic blog of 11 updates since my last post!!
  1. Duane fixed my computer!!--again.  Thanks Duane!
  2. Jenna lost her first tooth on 11/04/11!!  We were at recess duty and I wish I'd had a camera to capture the pure SHOCK / EXCITEMENT on her face.  Time to completely embrace the awkwardness that is our family's teeth for the next 5-10 years or so.  I just love those little teeth smiles....kinda hard to see them on their way out.  Good news: The tooth fairy actually remembered to come--no snow storms or broken wings or anything...so that was good.  I almost forgot that the toothfairy brings a very special glitter card and 2 extra shiny quarters for the first tooth....luckily the toothfairy did remember that--at about 11:30pm..so that was good.
  3. Brent & I both had birthdays!  Woot! Woot!  Brent's presents were all related to food--candy bars, favorite cereal, favorite chips...sorry, dute, but it just didn't fall close enough to payday.  He really made me feel guilty when my birthday fell on the day AFTER payday and I got....
  4. AN IPHONE!!  Now...what is this "texting" thing everyone has been talking about?  JK, I'm not that lame, but just barely.  I had to invite Joseph and Olivia over for a NON JUDGEMENTAL dinner where, after they ate, they would show me how to use my new treasure.  Who knew the judgement would come from the terrible dinner and not the lack of understanding in new technology... (sorry about those chicken pillows that tasted like tuna patte...)
  5. Halloween!  I think this may have been the best Halloween yet.  PERFECT weather---no trunk or treats---great pre-Halloween shin dig thrown by Aunt Bonnie---kids were old enough to walk the entire neighborhood on their own without much complaining--and I had a smidgen of self control and didn't gain 20 pounds!  Now...I need to fill out some of these numbers...
  6. Gavin was an Army Ranger
  7. Kesley was Cleopatra
  8. Jenna was a Queen Bee
  9. All of them together--
  10. Jenna pollinating the flowers
  11. Kesley takes a sneaky picture of me dressed as a Hippie--at the worst angle possible as I am fixing her hair...Maybe my diet will start today after all!
HAPPY 11-11-11!!

When redecorating goes bad

Well, for better or worse, I'm gonna post pics of the nightmare re-decor--but first:
Fashion forward Jenna--love when she gets herself dressed
Gavin and Brent's last fishing date for the season--unless there's one more:

OK, enough procrastinating.  Here is the picture of my inspiration hanging on my teal accent wall:
Here it is with the other teal accent wall I decided to paint in the living room:
Now...just remember it looks a little better in person...OK..breeeeeeeath....Actually, quick story about the color.  I wanted grey and picked out the first grey I liked.  The day after I was done painting, my chinese visiting teaching partner came by.  Her comments--word for word, "Oh! Yu payn yo howz!  Wha calaw iz dat?  Purpow?  Oh, it LAVENDA!"  I took one look around and realized that she was right.  My living room was lavender.  I went strait back to the store and bought a brownier grey and repainted. Ok...here's the view of half #1
Can you see the dilemma I had?  I had to work with speckled rainbow/white carpet and a pooh brown brick fireplace--not to mention the HUMONGOUS curtain hanging thing that looked worse grey--Oh, and I couldn't paint the ceiling yet as I had to wait for Brent to scrape the popcorn ceiling off--which could be another couple years, or so.
View of half #2

Now, couple of things I need some feedback on:
1. The lights.  I got them at World Market and loved the idea of the delicate cascade of light that it promised.  They look yellow here, but are actually brown burlap. Likey or no likey?
2. The little accent drawer.  I thought I would pull in some turquoise and thought that black would look good on top--it was already ancient looking so I went with a crackle.  It looks like Halloween, especially because I hung that orange wreathe there when I was pulling out the fall decor.  Please believe me when I say I know this CLASHES--but I am hesitant to try another color.  I'm thinking red/cream or stay with the turquoise but use a mahogany brown instead of black...?
3.My beautiful kids.  I like the prints and am having them mounted and this finish put on them so they will be bullet proof and not SHINY.  Do they need anything else?  Above or maybe have them sitting on a long black shelf?  ...GAAAA, I hate this stuff!
4. The black lamp shade.  I painted the balls turquoise--they were brown.  I've tried adding a black fringe, using a grey lamp shade, using a grey lamp shade with black fringe---I can't figure out what works?  or should I just leave it black?  I actually liked adding the table behind the couch--funny how we've had that table for, what...at least 8 years and it's always been in storage.
 5. My watercolors.  If you look back to view #1 you will see I hung them on the side of the fireplace.  It was just such an empty space and I couldn't figure out what I could do there--for free.  Again, like or no like?

6.  I painted the trim pretty white, white.  I'm wondering if a creamier white would look better...

So, that is as far as I have gotten.  It's so hard and I am so impatient.  Time to be honest.  Are your eyes on fire?

Shoot me now...

The last couple of weeks I attempted a big project.  I took a look around my living room and decided it was high time for a little color in my life.  I bought a colorful print that I loved and used that as my inspiration for curtains, paint, accent pieces....and now, I am going to officially take back everything I've ever said about Interior Design being a crock of **crackers.**

I am not going to share any pictures of the white trash remodel for now--not until I have the money to REDO what I just RE-DID. I'm going to share what was supposed to be the finishing touch--the creme de la creme, if you will.  Ya, it back fired too.  You see, I tried to copy my friend Mary's cute black and white close up's of her kiddos.  Let's just say I also take back anything I've ever said about how any person can take a great picture if they just had the right camera...

Who knew kids could be SO INFURIATING!!  Jenna sure tried to please me--that lady can pose and pose...

She would just change from serious to...laughy
to...triple chin all on her own!
Kesley was probably my biggest challenge--but surprisingly had the most potential shots in the end.  I got TONS of the smirk, the lower lip puff and finally a few that reminded me what we had for breakfast--biscuits and gravy--I guess we should have brushed teeth first! :)

Gavin proved to be the biggest pain in the butt.  I mostly got this:
After church (Yes, we did go this week) I tried a new approach--bribery.  One dollar got me lots of fake smiles (but a genuine effort), a few constipated shots and one shot that looked very much like a donkey...

They're not awesome, but this is what I decided on in the end.  They will be black and white when I print them.  They will hang above my couch and will probably only ever be seen by me because we don't get a lot of company---but I'm going to give myself an "A" for effort and feel good about it!

Gonna miss this view...

Last day of boating for the summer.  I'm really gonna miss this view.  We've decided she wasn't born with any nerve endings in her bum--what other excuse could there be???

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOM!
