By Small and Simple Things...

Since it was my Lauren's birthday recently, I thought I would share a story about her. This year has been difficult for her, first with moving away from all her many friends in Nampa, and then with coming to a new school in a place where she didn't know a single person. It took courage and work, but she is now friends with everyone in her class and is my happy girl again.
As a mom, it killed me to see my daughter coming home discouraged and weepy every day because she had played alone; so I gave Lauren a challenge: just ask one girl in your class today that you've never talked to before to play with you. I told her to introduce herself and just ask. She did, and she continued to do this for a few weeks, and before she knew it she had a whole new group of friends!
Now I told you that to preface the real story.
Lauren is a very good girl. She always tries to do what is right, and pretty much expects that of everyone around her. So when the kids in her class were using the Lord's name in vain, she took it personally. She went to her teacher quietly and explained the situation and how it made her feel uncomfortable to use the Savior's name like that. Her teacher then asked her to explain her feelings to the class and then her teacher asked the class if they could please respect Lauren's feeling.
I asked her about it today, to see if it had helped, and she got a huge smile on her face and said that no one says it anymore!
I'm so proud of her. What a great little example she is to those around her! Some people may feel this is a bit odd, but I love it. She saw something wrong with her world, and she did what she could to fix it. Now if only every one else would do the same.
I love so many things about my daughter, her clean freak streak, her passion for learning, but her simple goodness is at the top of the list. She always makes me think of Mosiah 3:19
For the natural man is an enemy to God, and has been from the fall of Adam, and will be, forever and ever, unless he yields to the enticings of the Holy Spirit, and putteth off the natural man and becometh a saint through the atonement of Christ the Lord, and becometh as a child, submissive, meek, humble, patient, full of love, willing to submit to all things which the Lord seeth fit to inflict upon him, even as a child doth submit to his father.
It took a lot of courage for her to say that in front of her class, but she felt so much better, and it made all the difference.

Last weekend we took the kids out for a ride by the beach so Lauren could use her new bike. It was beautiful! As always around here.

This is what Lily absolutely must do every time we go to the beach. She's got to make her mark on the world.

It was a great weekend.

100 Things I'm Grateful For: Post 4

I'm grateful because:

31. ...I'm the mother of a beautiful daughter, and have been for 7 years now.

32. ...my brave girl went into a whole new town, and a whole new school, filled with absolutely no one that we knew, and is now friends with everyone in her class.

33. ...my girl's favorite colors are "all of them!" but she still wanted her cupcake cake pops to be purple and pink for her class party.

34. ...Lauren wanted a beach party cake, which I had no idea what to do about, but had fun making any way.(and that my great friend Jen went home and made me some quick shark fins from fondant she just happened to have. Awesome!)

Maybe a little too much fun.

Because I named the sun-bathing bear after myself. Not that I ever get my pasty whiteness in a suit to sunbathe, but still.

35. ...Lauren is always so thankful and quick to give hugs for everything she gets. My kids are American kids and have so much, but they seem to realize that we are very fortunate.

36. ...sprinkles make me happy! All kinds. Also, that my fish have bubbles, even though Brett pointed out that they really wouldn't, like I care. All I wanted was an excuse to use more sugar pearls.

37. ...we all got bikes for our birthday and Christmas and we can now go on bike rides without borrowing bikes! I'm also thankful for Lauren running up and giving me a huge hug even before she ever touched her bike. So much excitement!

38. ...Lauren has such a positive outlook all the time. Her glass is always half full, and she is always excited and motivated to learn and grow. She takes challenges head on.

39. ..we can now all stop hearing about how much she wants a wooden wardrobe for her dolls clothes. THANK YOU Grandma Carleen!

40.  ..I have THIS girl in my life. I can see why we were friends before we ever came to Earth.

What Happens When I Get Bored

Does anyone even remember the last time I had bangs? I certainly hope not! It would have been during junior high, and I, having nothing but older brothers and a mom who so did not do hair, thought that doing my bangs meant allowing them to spread out to each side like little wings. I don't even have a picture of this, thankfully.

So anyway, I got bored about a month ago while getting ready for church, and a pair of scissors just happened to be right by me, so I randomly cut. Here is the result.

I'm still learning how to do them, looking on web sites for how to's, and trying out different styles. The best part about bangs is that I can put my hair up into a bun, which I love, without feeling like the front is too deadly boring.

So does anyone have any favorite adult hair styling web sites? Any suggestions! I am braving the world of long hair again. It's down past my shoulders now and I'm determined, for now, to let it go. Cutting and coloring are out for a while because I've found I just don't have the patience, or the money, to keep going in for touch ups. For me to just trim up with long hair I can go up to 8 weeks, so long it is then.

The Joys of Having an 8 Year Old

  • Completing his Faith in God booklet Image
  • Memorizing the 13 Articles of Faith
  • Completing a million things in his cub scout book in order to get a million awards that I then have to sew onto his uniform
  • Completing all 20 pages of his "challenge" math booklet; basically he is ahead in is math skills so he got sent a huge math packet to do in his "spare time" filled with pages and pages of math that he hasn't yet learned, such as long division. I love his teacher, but I get sooo bogged down with so many things to do.
  • Building the stupid bird house so he can finally get his wolf badge
  • All of his homework that usually takes us approximatly two hours to complete each night
  • And every one's favorite, I read to each of the boys and girls their book of choice for about 30 minutes every night. Ethan and I are reading the Percy Jackson series, and the girls and I are reading through the Beverly Clearly book series Lauren got for Christmas. We can't wait to see what Ramona is going to do every day.
Ramona the Pest (Ramona Quimby (Pb))
  • Then of course we have, FHE on Mondays, Scouts on Wedesday, Morning and evening family prayer, Daily scripture reading... Some days I feel like I'm losing my mind.
Okay, so it doesn't look like all that much, but when I have three other children with all sorts of things to do, it is very difficult to remember to do all these things, and then to make time to sit and actually complete them.
The hard part is that all of this is meant for him to learn and grow, which means repetition and constantly doing this stuff every day. Sometimes I really lament that fact that he is not more self-motivated like Lauren. I love his individual qualities, but it would be so nice to have a son who was happy while doing these things, and not just happy in the end when he gets his reward. Lauren can't hardly wait to get to her homework every day.
Ethan, son, I love you, but you seriously need to prioritize your needs and your wants. He asks me all the time, "Mom, can you please keep reminding me to do ______ so I can get it done!" My question is, if he is so excited about doing it, why doesn't he just do it???
I can't even imagine how awful life would be if we had a game playing station thingy.
