Introducing Kamryn Rosalee LaBounty - born to Becca and Stephen LaBounty on Sept 29th! Obviously photogenic, she was also a little stubborn. Becca was in labor for 8 hours after her water broke at home, eventually getting pitocin and an epidural. Despite the initial wait, Kamy Rose is behaving herself nicely now. She is joining her two older sisters and an older brother who all adore her. Becca says she has been eating pretty well and she has been patient while being held by her siblings. She is adorable and we can't wait to see her out and about! Congratulations Becca!10/17/11

Ryker Cole Baldwin
Betcha thought the blog was dead...didn't ya? Come on, you can admit it. But it just takes me a little longer than most and I have to stttrrreetchhh myself in order to do things like this. However cute babies are a way great excuse to post and I get to introduce handsome Ryker Cole Baldwin! He was born via C section to Melissa Baldwin on Sept 23rd. Melissa says this has been her best recovery so far, although she is still taking it very easy (good job Melissa - that's hard to do!) and has the help of her mother in law and her mother (who leaves this week). He is a good eater and loves to sleep in his bouncer. Big brother TJ can't wait to play all the brother stuff and Taryn seems to love him (although holding him lasts about 3.3 seconds). They have also enjoyed the grandma attention. We hope that Melissa continues to do well and remember her little kids for play dates this month so she can get some extra rest!

Baby Girl Daisy Jones
Daisy Ann Jones
Born at 12:01pm * May 9, 2011
7lbs 3oz & 20 inches long- She's our biggest by about a half a pound!
I woke up at 3am to go to the bathroom and a couple minutes after getting back in bed, my water broke but no contractions. After calling my midwife and telling my mom to get Clark off to school in the morning, we headed to the hospital. By this point, I was starting to feel contractions, but none of them were very strong or uncomfortable. After confirming that my water had indeed broken, they admitted me to labor and delivery around 5am. My contractions continued to come more regularly and pick up in strength/intensity although I could still talk through them just fine. I got hungry around 8am and called my mom to bring us (David and I) some breakfast. I also told my midwife and she promised to step outside when the food arrived since it's against hospital rules to eat in labor. My mom and 2 younger boys (Parker and Tingen) showed up about an hour later with food which I was really grateful for. Popsicles will only get you so far! Around 10am, my boys' noisiness was starting to get on my nerves since my contractions had gotten a lot stronger by then. I preferred quiet so I could concentrate on my contractions and work with them. After my kids left, our room was pretty silent; it was really nice. Around 11:30am, I felt that I needed to go to the bathroom. After convincing the nurse that I was not really needing to push yet, she and David helped me to the toilet. After going, I started having involuntary pushing contractions and couldn't get up without a lot of help. I had David get the midwife, who saw me pushing and immediately helped me get back to the bed. Laying on my back hurt, so I got into a squatting position and eventually ended up on my hands and knees with David sitting on the end of the bed helping support my arms. I probably pushed for about 20 minutes or so before getting her out. The midwife slid her between my knees and I picked her up and laid back on the bed. A few minutes passed before the midwife clamped the cord and let me cut it. Hers was the most calm and relaxing birth I've had yet. It was wonderful!
My boys have really enjoyed having a sister and she has been a sweet addition to our family.

Cake Decorating with Jennifer Spaulding
Reminder...Cake Decorating with tips is this Thursday at Jennifer Spalding's home (14334 Camino Rio Abajo). Starts at 6:30 and bring your supplies. If you need a frosting recipe here is one that Jennifer recommends:
5 sticks real butter (unsalted) at room temp. 9-10 C powdered sugar (depending on desired consitency) 1 tsp vanilla (or any flavoring) 2 Tblsp water 1/4 tsp fine salt Cream butter about 1-2 mins. Add salt and flavoring. Mix for approx 1 addl min. Add in PS 1C at a time. After each addition mix for approx 1 min and stop mixer to add next cup. Ensure you scrape the sides of your bowl to get all ingredients mixed well. After last addition mix 1 min and add water. Mix a bit longer to ensure everything is smoothed together. Can be stored in fridge approx 1 week and frozen for 2 months. Can be left out on counter 1-2 days but not recommended due to the possibility of it melting or becoming too soft to work with. |

Autumn's new BABY
Sadie Elizabeth Iverson was born Wednesday, April 27th, 2011 at 12:06 am
The labor and delivery went really well except one little hiccup. I started having contractions Tuesday afternoon around 2:00 pm and I thought my water broke. I called Dan around 4:00 pm and he came straight home and soon we were off to the hospital. When we got to the hospital it took awhile to check in but by the time we did I was dilated to a 4 and they told me my water hadn't broken yet. They weren't sure if they were going to admit me so they decided to wait a little bit. By the time they checked me again, maybe an hour later I was at a 5 and the contractions were a lot harder. This was probably 8:00 pm. They started my antibiotics since I was strep B positive. I wanted an epidural so around 9:00 pm the anesthesiologist came in and was putting the epidural in when he told me I was going to have a major headache the next day. Not a good thing to hear from an anesthesiologist! Apparently, he missed where the epidural was suppose to be and as a result I got a spinal tap. Well, he attempted again and got the epidural in the second time and soon after I felt really great :) By midnight I was dilated to a 10 and I only pushed twice and Sadie came out. She weighed 7lbs. 1 oz and was 18 inches long. We love our little Sadie lady!

Kim McCloy's Baby Boy is Here
Camden Paul McCloy
Born March 7th, 2011 1:15 pm
8 lbs, 14.6 ounces, 20 inches
We decided to be induced on March 7th, 4 days before his due date, mainly so we knew that we would have family here to help out. I was admitted at 7:30 am, and around 8:15 am, the induction was started. I was already dilated to a 4 when I got to the hospital, and the doctor told me that if I hadn’t been induced, I most likely would have been coming in that night on my own anyways, so he was ready to come on that date. We decided to go for the epidural right away because of the fact that I was already a 4 and we didn’t want to have to wait for the anesthesiologist. Labor was pretty simple, Derek and I were actually getting bored and played Who Wants To Be a Millionaire on his i-phone right up until delivery. My total labor and delivery time was 5 hours. At 1 pm, I was checked and ready to go, and at 1:15 pm, Camden Paul McCloy joined our family. He was a big baby, weighing in at 8 lbs 14.6 ounces, and 20 inches long. He has been a very good baby, he really transitioned to sleeping at night pretty fast, and hardly ever cries. London has taken a little bit of time adjusting to sharing the attention, but she is getting better, and loves to help out with her baby brother. We love having one of each and know that we are very blessed for our beautiful children. I want to thank everyone for all of their support and love (and meals) that have been provided. We have such a wonderful ward!

Cacti Seminar
On Tuesday, March 8, Quail Creek will host a repeat of a seminar held by the Green Valley Gardeners concerning growing and caring for cacti in Southern Arizona. The turnout for this seminar was overwhelming, exceeding the capacity of the room, and many, many people were turned away at the door. The Master Gardeners are getting many calls about ailing plants at the Cooperative Extension as well. Obviously people in our area are concerned about their cacti and succulents after the freeze.
After experiencing three nights of the worst freeze in Tucson in 30 years, many folks are looking at dead or dying cacti. The speaker, Mark Sitter, owner of B and B Cactus Farm in Tucson, will introduce you to 10 species of hardy cacti that fared well after the recent freeze. Mark will have living examples of each species and will talk about their merit.
He will discuss how to choose species appropriate to our area and will provide tips on planting, maintaining and feeding your cactus. He will cover proper watering and control of insect pests particular to cacti. With the recent cold spell, Mark will also discuss how to move forward, pruning and removing dead or damaged plants.
Mark has an extensive background in growing and caring for cacti. He worked 10 years at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum as a horticulturist caring for the Cactus and Succulent Garden as well as the Ironwood Restaurant and Gallery. He was involved with many of the museum's designs and installations of cactus and succulents. Today he oversees a large and diverse collection of cactus and succulents from around the world growing at B and B Cactus Farm, 1.5 miles east of Houghton Rd on the east Speedway Blvd. in Tucson.
The seminar will be presented in the ballroom at the Madera Clubhouse. Doors open at 9. The seminar will begin at 9:30 and last approximately 1 hour, with plenty of time left over to ask questions. The seminar is being co-hosted by Quail Creek with the Green Valley Gardeners as a public service and is free and open to the public.

Annalise Geniel Castillo
Born January 21, 2011 at 2:58 pm...while I was watching The Nate Berkus Show. Luckily, I was on an epidural so I didn't know that she was basically ready to come while I watched my design show. I was induced at 8 that morning and got my drugs after a few painful contractions. (I LOVE modern medicine!) The nurse checked me at 2:50 and 8 minutes later Annalise was born. Super easy and uncomplicated delivery. She weighed 7 pounds and 9 ounces (almost a full pound more than Nora) and 20 inches (an inch taller than Nora, too). She has been a really sweet baby so far. I had forgotten how much little newborns squawk and make sounds like sighs. She's so precious to us and Nora seems rather taken also. She keeps running up to her and saying "baby!" and then "ANNA!". She yells her name everytime, but we're happy Nora can say that since she is only 18 months. People keep asking where I got the name, so I thought I'd share it here. I found the name is the book The Hidding Place that I borrowed from Kim Young...(or was it Brita's?) and I fell in love with it. I liked it because it was an combination of my sister Dianna's name and Todd's sister Alicia's name. Geniel is Todd's grandma's name. I hope my little Annalise will have all the amazing qualities of these outstanding and strong women.

Notes from our Budgeting Activity
Are you spending money on things you REALLY want or substituting for unsatisfying cheaper alternatives?
We brainstormed Benefits of Budgeting: Teaches kids to use money wisely. Makes you available to serve. Enjoyment of saved for recreation. Sleep at night. etc.
Liquid savings should be for at least 3 months for household. Go to provident living calculator online to find out how long until you get 3 month reserve & pay off debt.
Budgeting is between spouses, AND children. Children need to learn to make sacrifices and be careful with money. Must pass on your knowledge for the next generation.
Make sure both spouses know how to do banking, bills, taxes investments, 401k etc. - do it together twice a year.
The 10 Principals from the book "For Love & Money":
1- Financial problems are usually behavioral problems.
2- If you continue doing what you've been doing, you'll get continue getting what you've gotten.
3- Nothing is worth sacrificing relationship for.
4- money spent on things you value usually leads to a feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment. Money spent on things you don't value usually leads to a feeling of frustration and futility.
5- We know the price of everything and the value of nothing.
6- You can never get enough of what you don't need, because what you don't need can never satisfy.
7- Financial freedom is often the result of a decrease in spending, not an increase in income.
8- nothing (no thing) is worth risking the relationship.
9- The best things in life are free.
10- The value of an individual should never be equated with net worth.

The Grow-Box
Hey, all you gardeners out there! Spring is right around the corner, so it’s time to start thinking about your summer gardens. Your winter garden should be doing great right now. If it’s not, it is not too late to get in your peas, carrots, lettuce, onions, garlic, leeks, swiss chard, spinach, and other cool weather crops. As for preparing for your summer garden, it is the right time to start seeds inside. Right now is the best time for tomatoes and peppers, and in about three or four more weeks do your melons and squash. The latter can also be sown right outside. You don’t need much to do this, just some peat pots or soil in an egg carton cup, and an enclosed case with a clear lid, like the plastic parts left over from your bakery items. One key thing is, that they must be kept moist and the soil temperature must be warmer than room temperature. Some put them on the dryer, where there is always a batch going. Others use a heating pad. I put mine out in the sun for several hours of the day to let the sun heat things up.
The benefits of starting your own? They are ready when Tucson weather is ready. Too often, Wal-Mart, Home Depot, etc. get their starter plants when the rest of the country is getting theirs, which is too late for Tucson! We need to plant outside in mid March, not mid May like Utah. If you have questions . . . . . call Pres. Morris or your favorite gardener!
Happy Gardening!

New Year Message from Pres Morris
Happy New Year Sisters!
Here we are at the end of another Christmas & Holiday Season, and at the beginning of a brand New Year. It seems the traditional thing to do is to look back at the past year and reminisce, and look forward to the New Year coming up and make some changes, or goals for improvement.
In 2010 we learned how to do many new things, welcomed several new girls into the ward, got to know each other better through service, and lived the Relief Society Motto quite well, that “Charity Never Faileth”. We had 17 babies born, had some families in great need at Christmas, and a million other things all year where you took care of each other and showed such charity and the True Love of Christ, as you filled those needs, often without signing up for it on a sign-up sheet, or being prompted in any external way, just through the promptings of the Holy Ghost and your good hearts. I ‘m sure the Lord is pleased with all the good things you do to take care of each other.
While many of you were away for Christmas with your extended families, the Bishop spoke in Sacrament Meeting on something he felt was a great need we have to improve on. Another form of charity. Charity towards each other, not in the things we do, but in the things we say about one another. An ugly word for it is Gossip. Most of the time, I don’t think we are trying to be malicious about the things we say, but just want to share about the struggles others are having, or want to fill others in on the latest news. We need to be careful that we are being kind when we do that, and think “if it were my problem, would I want others discussing that, or saying that about me behind my back?” There is a fine line between informing others of struggles and trying to come up with a solution to help, and just passing on hot and juicy stories about others. An old fashioned saying is: “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.” That is still a good one. Sometimes you are in a group, and haven’t said anything unkind, but someone else does. It’s a hard thing to do, but you can kindly turn the conversation around and lead the way into a new direction and stop gossip in its tracks.
Perhaps this New Year we could make some improvements in this area, and look at what we say about others a little differently, look at it as though you were being charitable in the things you say, like you are in the things you do.
May the Lord Bless you for your goodness, and give you a wonderful year of growth and blessings!
President Morris
