Summer Bash with Tim's Parents

With September winding down and Tim's return to school right around the corner, we realized that this is our last week of summer vacation. To help us make the most of our last few days, Tim's parents came up for the weekend. We blitzed our way through all of our favorite Oregon activities including the Tillamook Cheese Factory, a drive up the beautiful Oregon Coast, and a visit to what the AAA travel guide calls the third tallest monolift in the world (Haystack Rock).

Next, we transitioned to the city, where we gave my parents a glimpse of what Portland has to offer. Our time was well spent as we visited the Saturday Market. Everyone there is very "Portlandy" and either sells some organic product, is undergoing an environmental initiative, or has natural dredlocks and unshaved legs. Tim and his dad did find some killer masks that they will sport come Halloween. Although the Oregon Trail Cultural Center was a bust, my favorite Portland adventure was the beautiful Rose Garden and the view of the city from Pittock Mansion. Portland may be the prettiest city I have ever seen.

It was great seeing Tim's parents. They really are great people. Everytime we see them they always animate us to be better... to eat more healthy, to be more spiritual, and even to have a big family as fun and close as theirs.

Happy 4th Anniversary!

I can't believe that it has already been four years since Tim and I got married. It seems like it was just last year. Yet, here we are counting down the months til graduation from Dental School, looking for a practice to get started in, and loving the time that we get to spend with our little darling. Thanks for the great year love, I can't wait for the next 50. I love you!

The B-52!

Mike, Courtney, Tim, Macy, and I went to a place last week called the Burrito House: home of the B-52. Tim and I had spent weeks hearing about how big this burrito was and wanted to tes tit out for ourselves. As you can imagine with a name like the B-52, this delectable dish was filled with 52 ounces of beef, chicken, cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, and whole olives. If that wasn't enough, we also recieved an endless supply of chips and salsa and what I would say are some of the best scones I have ever had. Delectable!!!!

As if our taste buds hadn't had enough that night we decided to (despite the weather I may add) have a bon fire and roast SMORES. Macy sure loved the fire and spent most of the night mesmerized by the flames; of course that was after Uncle Mike and Daddy spent half an hour trying to get the wood to light in the middle of a typical rainy Portland day. It was quite funny but the smores were definitely worth it. Yum!

Beach Camping

Macy's first trip to the beach was so adventure-filled you wouldn't believe that we only spent two days at the beach. Our trip started out with a small detour from our camping spot to stop at the Tillamook Cheese Factory in Tillamook, Oregon. The Cheese Factory tour is a must on any trip to the beach and is filled with all the tasties of cheese that you would want, delicious squeaky cheese, and last but not least ice cream (fresh from the factory)!!!! Yum.

Our next stop on the journey was our campground in Manzanita, Oregon. Just a quick walk from the beach. We spoiled ourselves this trip with a yurt (kind of like a cabin with real beds and electricity). Luxury like this will make it hard to go back to sleeping in a tent. Macy was super excited when we got out of the car and loved to explore. She even helped daddy tend the fire. Tim was super excited to be able to fly his kite and loved spending time on the beach. Macy wasn't so sure about the ocean but did stick her feet in the water just to turn to us and scream because it was so cold. At least she loved the sand -- so much that she had to taste. I think she was disappointed with the taste test.

Yucky, sand. :(

Driving up the 101 headed home we made another small detour to Seaside, Oregon. The beach was gorgeous although a little crowded with the many folks in town for an Old Car Show. The outlet mall was a bit disappointing but the downtown strip made up for it with delectable ice cream and yummy smelling sea salts!

The happy girl who couldn't get enough of the sand!

Clap, Clap, Clappy, Clap

I've been working with Macy on clapping for a while now but the practice finally paid off when she started clapping yesterday!!! Wahoo!

Triplets

After our many vacations that come each summer, we finally got the kiddos back together again. They are growing so fast and are all nearly the same size. The pictures turned out so cute!

Playing Dr. Schmidt in rural Oregon

There isn't much in eastern Oregon, but part of that not much is a quaint little town called Baker City. That's where Tim spent the week volunteering at Benson General Dental practice. He loved it for several reasons. It was really helpful to chat with Dr. Sean Benson about his practice and some of the mistakes he had made acquiring a practice. It was eye-opening how efficient and more relaxed it is to have an assistant at your side and to get away from an academic setting. It also really opening to the idea of living in a small town: Baker city has a population of 10,000 or so and it felt so small-town-friendly. I ate at Charlie's (where Charlie himself patted me on the back), I visited the town farmer's market at the park, and the gal running the evening shift at the inn I stayed at made a cake for one of the tenant's birthday. It makes me really excited to be a dentist!

NHSC conference in Tampa

The government was nice enough to pay for me to have a little vacation in Tampa, Florida. It was technically an orientation/placement conference for all graduating physicians and dentists that are part of the NHSC scholarship program... but it didn't stop them from putting us up in a ritzy marriot on the water-front. Anyway, the conference was perfect. I got to meet reps from several of the clinics I am interested in and took care of some other logistical meetings, but most of all it got me all excited to graduate and start working at one of these clinics. If I haven't mentioned before, the NHSC scholarship program is a government-funded project designed to encourage physicians and dentists to work in under-served areas for at least two years(usually rural towns or urban centers). In return, they are covering tuition and other school expenses for my final two years until I graduate.

9 Months!

My baby girl is growing up fast although she seems more like a toddler now than a baby. We took Macy in for her nine month appointment this week and she keeps growing like a champ. She was 20 lbs (75th percentile) and 29-1/4 inches long (95th percentile). I feel like she has doubled her abilities in the last month and now is such a busy body. Macy loves to stand up to things and is constantly getting stuck under the chairs by our table. She crawls everywhere and gets faster every day. She loves to grunt and groan (I guess it is her form of communication) and she thinks that it is hilarious when we point at each other trying to teach her how to say momma and dadda. Macy did get another tooth this month and soon she'll have her second front teeth.

The FAIR

The once a year tradition has once again come and gone. This year was filled with many hours (177 for Brit), laughter (2am cinnamon roll craving), dripping sweat (between the grill and fryer), and tears (Macy's, of course).
I don't know who had more fun, Macy or Grandma, but Macy got to spend two and a half weeks with Grandma Suzie. Some of the major highlights of Macy's adventures were going to the petting zoo with daddy, riding the carousel, getting to taste Roy's famous milkshakes, and riding on Great Grandpa's Goat (it is the biggest golf cart you have ever seen and Grandpa even let her steer). Macy had a great time with the animals and loved to reach out and touch them.
