Merry Christmas!

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders.  And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6

May the blessing of Christmas touch you and your families this year!  I pray God will be your Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father and Prince of Peace as we celebrate the birth of our King.

Ear Update

Silas' ear seems to be healing well!  We go back for our last follow up tomorrow, before heading home on Thursday.  We are ready to be home!  I wanted to explain exactly what Dr. Roberson did to repair the hearing.  Silas had a pretty good ear canal.  Most kids need a skin graft to line their new canal, but Silas did not - great news.  Dr. R was able to drill out some bone and soft tissue to open up his canal.  Silas also did have a small ear drum - again great news.  Dr. R removed Silas' malleus and incus because they were malformed.  He inserted a prosthesis that goes directly from the ear drum to the stapes.  He also was able to build up the ear drum with tissue so that it is bigger.  We can tell a difference in his hearing without the BAHA on.  There is still packing in the ear, so I am really excited to see the change when all of it has been removed.  We will have a few follow up appointments with and ENT at home who will finish removing everything.

The external ear was done the same as last time.  The only difference we have noticed it that it is much more swollen.  Last time, Silas wore a mold on his ear at all times which decreased swelling.  This time we have to put ear drops in twice a day and so he does not have the mold on.  I'm hoping it will still heal as nicely as the first one.

This time they only shaved the sides of Silas' head so it looked like he had a really bad mohawk.  It was itching him too, so we just shaved the rest of his head.

At the doctor last week.  The blue thing is the mold he wore the entire time last time.  He was getting his "hair" washed.  They also washed his ear a little.
 TWO EARS!  So handsome!
I know it looks rough now, but it will heal.  You can really see the stitches and it is swollen.  It is way more swollen than this now. : (  At least it doesn't hurt!  He is wearing the cup (like in the top picture) and will continue to wear it for a few more weeks for protection.

LA Zoo

Last Tuesday we spent the day at the LA Zoo.  It is a nice little zoo and we had a great time.
The weather was great (it's now been raining for 5 or 6 days straight - yuck!)
The girls petting a snake - eeekk!
 Graceful Flamingo's

Madelyn loved the petting zoo.  She is definitely our animal girl.

The Beach

We are loving the West Coast sunsets over the ocean - beautiful!

On Sunday and Monday we had a heat wave.  It was wonderful - 80+ degrees! We enjoyed some beach time.  The kids got wet but the water was FREEZING.
 Our beach babe
Madelyn loves the ocean - she ran up and down searching for shells
Silas had fun playing in the sand
 Enjoying the sun
You can see the pier in the background
Caught by a wave - burr
Sunday night was the Manhattan Beach Christmas Celebration.  They had a great fireworks show off the pier which we were able to watch from our deck.  The house next to us had been setting up all day for a huge party.  A rental company spent hours unloading things and setting them up.  The is a picture of the big event - we had so much fun people watching!  The lady in the red in the middle of the picture was one of several hired dancers to get the party started!  It was funny and we enjoyed watching and listening to the LOUD music. : )
Joining in the party fun - dancing to the music from our deck - complete with PJ's!
We have seen many dolphins!  If you look closely you can see on in the middle of the picture
Our rental house - it is 4 different apartments.  We are staying in the top left one.
The area we are staying is filled with multi-million dollar homes.  The house next to us rents for $30,000 per month.  Crazy.  This is just a picture of one of many huge beach front homes.
A look down The Strand where we are staying.  The sidewalk is a jogging/walking path
And one more sunset picture, just because!

God's Creation

We love, love, love the ocean!  This is the view from our rental place - perfect!!  The yellow poles in the sand are volleyball nets, the little house on the sand is a life guard station.
You can see the pier on the right side.  I enjoyed a long walk by the beach today.  The weather is wonderful - 60's & 70's.  Expected to be 80 on Sunday.  It's a great place to hang out while Silas' recuperates and we have follow up appointments with the doctor.

Exploratorium

On Wednesday after Silas' doctor's appointment we headed into San Francisco and went to the Exploratorium Museum.  It is a hand's on science museum.  We had a lot of fun.  Enjoy the pictures from our day!

A toilet water fountain - Silas loved it!

Pictures!

On Friday we went into Palo Alto a little before Silas' pre-op appointment.  We went to Baylands Nature Preserve.  It is one of the top bird watching places and was very beautiful.  Silas missed it - he was napping in the car - but the girls, Kristyn and I enjoyed walking around.  This was a very long bridge that stretched out into the bay.
Aunt Kristyn and Madelyn at the end of the bridge.  We saw lots of birds and ducks.
Silas before surgery - excuse the angle of my face in the picture!!  He stayed busy coloring and then they gave him some medication to help calm him down before they took him back.  That way he wasn't screaming as they rolled him away from us - made it easier for mommy and daddy!
Silas is very relaxed now - the medication has kicked in.  Buzz, Woody and Silas all got surgical hats on.
After surgery - Silas was slow to wake up which is good.  He did great but was really tired on Monday night.  He ate a little before crashing and sleeping all night.
This picture is for Darcy and those of you who's child will be having this surgery.  The red tubes and bulbs at the top are the drains.  Silas had his taken out today.  They basically drain extra fluid (blood) from the scalp.  Silas does not like the drains - they hurt and he cried really hard when they were pulled out today.  It has been the ONLY time in both surgeries that he has cried.  He is coming along - I am not glad he was in pain, but emotionally I am glad he was able to let his true feelings out!  Anyway - you can see a tiny bit of the white cup under the hat.  Silas will wear this for at least 3 weeks - it protects his ear.  Right now the ear has a big mold on it and then is protected with the cup.  We will change the mold out several times over the next few weeks - it helps to keep swelling down.
Trying to wake up after surgery
Bless his heart - trying to work a puzzle but he was so tired!
Fast asleep after a long day of surgery.  They took Silas back for surgery around 7:30 and we were taken back into recovery a little after 5:00.

Day after surgery - AMAZING!  We went to the de Young Museum.  It is a really good art museum.  Not really the rest of my families favorite place, but it had free admission on Tuesday.  It was nice to go and walk around for a while.  Then we headed to the Golden Gate Bridge.
 My three favorite little people

So far we have had a fantastic trip.  Tomorrow we will drive to LA and finish the rest of our trip there.  One-third of the way done!  We are enjoying the CA weather this time of year and have had some really fun family time.  We are so thankful Silas' surgery was successful!  I will do a separate post explaining in detail what they did to the internal ear.
