Shad Shack - A Mainstream Records Fan Site

A big hello to all those who love the sound and style of those 70s Mainstream sides!

Although the company's back catalogue is way deep and extends well beyond those familiar white covers with the bold borders, the shad shack will be focusing on the 122 albums in the popular "MRL 300" series (yeah, I know the math's off but so the story goes with Mainstream from what I've heard). As time passes, I'm sure many fans will want to speak up for their favourite records on the label that aren't on this list and they're welcome to do it here!

Inspired by Ish and his herculean efforts at Strata-East Fan Club and Magic Purple Sunshine, I started compiling the list and supplemental links a couple months ago. Info came from a variety of sources including Discogs, Wikipedia, forbidden eye, Organissimo, Rate Your Music, and Audiophile. However, it was E-mile's request today for someone to do a Mainstream blog over at El Goog's post of Mike Longo's Matrix that gave me the push to just put it all together and let it loose.

Befitting label owner Bobby Shad's budget ethos, this site has been set up to run economically time-wise. The LPs are all below, now it's up to the community (myself included) to continue to fill in the spaces as well. We'll add reviews, stories, blog links (already 24/122 to start with) and much more as they're found or submitted.

Welcome to this work-in-progress and if you have any links or info to add, please don't be shy! General feedback would be best mentioned in the comments for this post. Since this blog is for the MRL fans, I'm hopin' to open it up to other authors over time so if you're interested, participate and drop a line.

Matthew Sews Up The Shack!!!



Many thanks are due to the marvelous Matthew from Colorado, who stepped up today with this lovely rip of Don Burrow's MRL to complete the series here at the shack! Thanks to him you're now able to enjoy the other tracks in addition to the previously-comped Cannonball cover "Sweet Emma" you've likely already heard on the Killer Jazz Funk From The Mainstream Vault series.

Here's what Matthew had to say:
Dear "Cheeba,"

First of all, let me say that I have been following your blogs, Soundological Investimigations and The Shad Shack for a long time now. I really appreciate all the music you tirelessly put up. Having just finished a rip of an album on par with your usual amount of effort, I can say that I have a new appreciation for the work you put in to sharing this music with people like me. I don't make enough of an effort to comment and show my appreciation, but hopefully this will make up for it...

I have ripped the final album in the Mainstream series, Live at The Sydney Opera House by The Don Burrows Quartet. It is my first rip for sharing purposes, but I think it turned out really well. My hope is that it will suffice to complete the Shad Shack's collection, or at least until a better rip comes along (hopefully Simon666 hasn't already beat me to it!) I found this album only weeks ago for $1 at local thrift store! My copy is the American Mainstream release, not the Australian original on Cherry Pie. For the usual $1 find, it is in great shape. But don't take my word for it...you can listen for yourself here:

I don't have a blog of my own (yet), or a Rapidshare account etc. So I encourage you to post this rip on your blogs if it meets your standards, or share this link with the public. I included extensive cover art, and tagged the 320kbps mp3s. I don't ask anything in return, only credit for the rip. When I checked into The Shad Shack and saw that this was the only one you were missing, I figured the least I could do was do my best to get it to you. I hope you and the other Mainstream fans of the world can enjoy this until the album goes back in print!

Thanks again for all that you do, keep up the good work, and I'll see you 'round the blogosphere!

Matthew has not only filled the last blank in the lion's share list, he's also provided a great quality rip and has thoughtfully included full scans for our viewing enjoyment as well. For a first attempt, I must say he's done a pretty bang-up job here! I'm sure he'd love some feedback on his inaugural vinyl share so hopefully the classy readers here at the shack will provide some encouragement for his efforts.

As Matthew notes, Simon666 from never enough rhodes has been meaning to get to this for a while but he has the 2LP Cherry Red version so scanning the massive booklet and gatefold cover is (as Matthew can now attest) a major task. Besides, our favourite thunderer-from-down-underer has already graced the blogosphere with ample Don Burrows delights at his home base, so he's paid his DB dues already - be sure to check those out as well, you won't be disappointed.

On behalf of the shack and shacksters everywhere, thanks for going out of your way to provide this one, Matthew! If you ever do start your own blog, please make sure to let us know so we can add you to the list of Big Game Hunters!

Happy Birthday Bobby!

In honour of what would have been the 90th birthday of Bob Shad, the shad shack would like to celebrate by announcing a contest for our readers!

Since every album (well, almost every album) in the MRL series is now available for your listening pleasure, we could think of no better way to spotlight the eclectic nature of the imprint's short run than by holding a mixtape contest! We'll choose 3 winners, each of whom will get a 1-month RS subscription (other goodies might be announced in the future) and receive a place of honour in the blog sidebar for bragging rights.

The 3 winners will be chosen by readers in a poll that will be available on the blog once the deadline for submissions is passed. The deadline to get your mixes in is 11:59 PM on March 13, 2010, so that gives you almost a month to put something together. You can start submitting mixes as early as you like.

You can make your mix available to the public however you wish to do so but if hosting files is a problem for you, just send an email (find via profile to the right) and we'll work out a way to provide folks adequate access to your bizness. Otherwise, you can simply drop a comment on this post with a link to your mix for starters.

After the submission deadline voters will have 2 weeks to choose their favourites in 3 categories:


Best Overall Mix
Best Themed Mix or Artistic Statement
Best/Most Eclectic Mix


What those categories actually mean will be up to the readers and determined by voting alone. Voting rules will be published when the poll is accessible.



There are very few rules:

1) All audio material must be taken from the MRL series of albums listed at the shad shack.

2) Anonymous submissions will be accepted but will not appear in the poll. You don't need to use your real name, you just need to use a name and the name will be attached to your mix for voting purposes.

3) Anyone can submit as many mixes as they like but to be fair and to spread the love, you can only win one category. If readers vote you to the top of two or more, category priority will be as listed above from top-to-bottom. For example, winning Best Overall Mix will disqualify you for the other categories and if you happen to be voted to the top of Best Themed Mix or Artistic Statement too, the next runner-up will get the prize for that category (and so on).

4) In the mixtape spirit, submissions can't be longer than 90 minutes run time. Keep in mind that limiting your mix length to 80 min so it can be burned to a CD may be something that people will vote up. There is no minimum run time requirement.

5) Cover art is not necessary but people may be more inclined to vote up submissions where it is included, especially in the "Artistic Statement" category.

6) I reserve the right to submit my own mix(es) too! However, in the spirit of good sportsmanship, I will not be eligible to win any prizes. If I should happen to win a category by some fluke, I won't accept the prize and it will default to the next runner-up. In other words, a vote for me does not reduce the number of prizes available to be won. That would just be a dick move.

7) There is no cash value equivalent for the prizes so don't ask. If somebody wants to help sponsor the contest and donate swag for prizes that would be sweet.



Winners will be announced within a few days after voting closes but results will be public on an ongoing basis so y'all will probably know who won already.

Thanks to everyone for pitching in and for helping to fill up the shack over the last year-and-a-half. Good luck and look forward to hearing those mixes!!

Hook's Gems has dug into his deep treasure chest and generously shared one of the few remaining MRL releases so far unseen at the shack. Thanks to him, we're now down to only 11 lions (see them here) that have yet to be bagged on the Shad safari!

Most recordings on this compilation were produced in the late 40s by Shad for his first label, Sittin' In With Records, which he co-owned with his brother Morty. Reissued by Mainstream in the 60s as A Look At Yesterday, the name was shortened for its recycling in the MRL series. Always one to capitalise on his back catalogue, Bob also released this in MRL's 800 series, which were basically 2-fer-1 repackages of the 300 series - mainly the 300 reissues of 60s jazz.

On Track at The Shack

Howdy shackers! Just thought I'd drop a quick note on the status of the shad shack's archive. Right now we're sitting on 92 out of the 122 Mainstream Red Lion releases - that's almost exactly 75%! Right now the two Hadley Caliman LPs point to dead links but we'll be fixing those soon, I'm sure.

Humongous thanks are in order to all those in the "Big Game Hunters" list on the right-hand side of your screen - make sure you show 'em your appreciation whenever you can!!! Without their help, many of these recordings wouldn't be available for your listening pleasure - especially since less than half (an educated guess) have been have been re-issued.

I've also been able to add info to some posts, upgrade cover pics and throw down some links elsewhere that tell some great stories about artists during the Mainstream years. Most of these appear in the comments, so make sure you check them out, too.

What's left? Well, here's a list of the 30 albums remaining, so fire up your detective skills or dust off that vinyl sitting in your collection and share what you can. I expect this list will shorten soon, there are a few in there I'm waiting to arrive in the post and some of our fine upstanding shackizens have advised of forthcoming shares on their blogs. No Lack of Shack

Hello shacksters! It's good to get back on the hobby horse after being down for a few (?!?) months and your patience has been highly appreciated. Unfortunately, in the crash I experienced at the start of the year, I lost my entire MRL archive, including the original spreadsheet used to create the shad shack in the first place. That meant all records and copies kept for backup of links, covers and albums that appeared here went up in a puff of smoke. Eventually I'll be trying complete my personal archive again but may not be able to provide re-posts if the original hosting blog (or service) closes shop before I can finish. That's why it's always of utmost importance to thank the original posters on their blog whenever you can - it's usually enough incentive to keep them going!

Some of you may have been keeping an eye out at Soundological for some more Mainstream memories but you'll still have to wait for a week or two before newly minted MRL mp3's start making an appearance there. In the meantime, there have been many shares out there to assist you with your Red Lion love affair, especially from our wonderful My Jazz World, My Favourite Sound and Never Enough Rhodes.
