Singing and Sleep

I don't have any pictures today. However, I wanted to share a humorous Geddy story. Last night when I got home from work Scott had just put Geddy to bed (around 9:30). He had taken a late (noon) nap and slept for three hours, so I wasn't surprised that he was late getting to bed. He usually just quietly falls asleep. Last night he decided to sing himself to sleep. He spent at least half an hour singing all sorts of made up songs as well as his all-time favorite "Barbara Ann". We couldn't understand all of his lyrics but what we did hear included "no-no-no, Mama, Daddy, Geddy, and Panky". I wished I had been able to record it. The most important part of this whole story is that he then slept 10 hours straight afterwards! I think Scott should encourage him to sing every night when he puts him to bed if it's going to get that kind of result!

Thursday Morning

I know that is a generic title, but I just got some cute pictures of Geddy this morning that I wanted to share with the friends and family who view this blog. Today started off well for Geddy, he got his most favorite breakfast of all time. He loves "eggs" and asks for them every morning (though he doesn't get them every morning). He loves chocolate chip pancakes as well, so I started making Elmo or Cookie Monster pancakes occasionally. This morning he couldn't decided which he wanted, so I made both. After breakfast we were cleaning his room and he decided to "sleep" with all of his stuffed animals. What a silly boy!

Fun at the Playground

The other day I decided to "kill two birds with one stone". Geddy really wanted to go to the playground and I need exercise so I walked over to the Peeteetneet School (not used as such anymore). It is about a half mile to three quarters of a mile each way. They have a small playground with swings, slides and climbing things. We went early so it wasn't too hot and Geddy had the whole place to himself for about an hour. Once other kids started showing up he got a bit possessive of the slide so I decided it was time to head home. He was pretty unhappy about this decision. However, I told him I would bring him again so he said "bye" to all the things he had fun on and was okay with leaving. He was also consoled by the fact that he got to see a horse up close and personal a few blocks from home. He is so agile and fearless on the play structure. I kept thinking he's too little to be this independent on such a big thing. Unfortunately I was unable to get pictures or video of him on the swing. I kind of had to hang on to him for those, they are just too high off the ground.

You don't need sound on this one, you'll just here me telling him to be careful and wait to go down the slide until I am in position. But the next video you definitely need sound as it is quite pointless without.

And to conclude this entry an adorable picture of my two "babies". After the park we came home and had Popsicles outside. Then after changing Geddy he wanted to kiss Spanky so I thought I better snap a picture if I could. I didn't quite get the kiss, but the picture is still cute.

Kitchen Adventure

Call me crazy, but I thought it would be fun to let Geddy help me make a dessert for him and Scott to have after their dinner tonight. Geddy is always more manageable when I let him do whatever I am doing. He was so excited and proud to be standing on that chair and helping me that I couldn't resist taking pictures.

"Let's go Mama"

The hardest part of letting him stir was convincing him not to spoon the crust mix into his mouth! (I did let him lick the spoon when we were done).

He wasn't too sure about the loud mixer at first. However, once I started moving it around he had to grab on and help too. His favorite part (okay second favorite part - see below for favorite part) was turning the mixer off and on.

And of course, the best part, licking the beaters! Yes, I licked the other one. Geddy wanted to save the rest of his for Daddy but I convinced him otherwise.

"Aaaaaaaaaaaaall done!" (Direct quote from Geddy).

We had a fun time and he actually listened quite well and didn't complicate matters too much. We will have to try it again before his helpful stage ends!

Trains, Trains and More Trains

On our recent trip to the Sacramento area I thought it would be fun to take Scott and Geddy to the California State Railroad Museum. I remember going there with my family when I was younger. Geddy, being a typical little boy, enjoys seeing trains and making train noises. To begin our day we took the advice of my sister Beth and her husband Brian, and rode the Amtrak train from Davis into Sacramento. Geddy was excited from the moment he first heard the whistle of the incoming train. Once we were on the train it wasn't that exciting, because he couldn't see the train anymore. After the train arrive it was just a short walk to Old Sacramento where we toured the museum. Geddy was thrilled by everything. He would see the big wheels of the trains that were taller than Daddy and he would just say "WOW!"
Pretending to work the controls of one engine was an exciting thing! Nothing really happened, but that didn't bother Geddy. As long as there are buttons to push, levers to pull or anything else that moves that is all he needs!

We all found the interior of the sleeper cars fascinating. Scott observed that people must have been a lot shorter back in the 1800's as there's no way we would be able to sleep on those beds. Also as Geddy is showing here, the aisles were extremely narrow and confining. I don't think I would've enjoyed a long trip on one of these, talk about claustrophobia. Then there was the kitchen! Amazing that the cooks could make so much food for so many people in such a small area. It had to have been hot, and a little dangerous when they went around curves and such!

The day would have been more enjoyable had there not been so many school groups running around. We were almost knocked down several times by rambunctious elementary school kids. Luckily they weren't allowed to play in the Thomas the Tank Engine area, so Geddy had a little peace and quiet there.

A rare picture of me and Geddy. Not the greatest, but I didn't exactly pick a great place to sit so the lighting was off. Geddy was tired and didn't want to look at Scott no matter what silly faces or sounds he made trying to get his attention.

Vocabulary

Scott and I are really enjoying this time in Geddy's life when he is learning to talk. He started a little slow, a new word every few weeks. He has never really been a nonsense talker, he usually only talks if he knows the word. He fills in the words he doesn't know with sound effects. Then he started doing about a word a week and starting to string a word or two together. The past few weeks he is just popping out with new words constantly. Last week while we were on vacation he mastered the letters F and S (he knows about half of his alphabet by sight). His favorite words last week were "yes", "umbrella" and "bath". The week before that it was "egg", "backpack", "gold" and "jam". Well this week he has already added at least six words to his vocabulary. "Dice", "book", "me" (used in the proper context), "honey", "bun", "dog" (instead of just saying woof-woof), and "black bolt" (comic book character). I find it interesting the words he chooses to say. I assumed that he would say the words he heard us say the most first, but we certainly don't mention gold, dice and black bolt in our everyday conversations.
(all the pictures are from our drive west - Geddy did pretty good in his car seat considering these were taken the first and longest day in the car (8+ hours)

Haircut

The past few weeks have been very busy for us. After Geddy recovered from his illness, it was time to head to California to visit family. We timed it so Scott and I could enjoy a concert in Concord as well. Before the trip I decided to rid Geddy of his "mop". We loved his curls, but when we continually were calling him The Mop, we decided it was time to give him his first big boy haircut. I have trimmed his hair 2 or 3 times before with scissors. I decided to be adventurous (though safer) and use the electric clippers. I was worried he would be scared. He wasn't, I guess he has seen me cut Scott's often enough. Geddy actually sat quite still and I was pretty pleased with the results, though they do make him look even older than his 22 months!
