Guest Blogger: Meredith Benfield

{Meredith Benfield is a longtime friend of Riffraff, and owner, Kirsten Blowers. She and her husband Dale are renowned wedding photographers in the Northwest Arkansas area. We are excited to have her post today!}

There are like a grillion things I love about Riffraff. If I had time, and if you had the patience, I would list every. single. one. My very favorite thing about Riffraff is the beautiful, kind-hearted, incomparable owner, Kirsten! She's one of a kind, y'all!

BUT...If I had to choose my favorite PIECE from Riffraff it would be the 4 foot tall golden angel wings created from refurbished wood. Kirsten lovingly hung them over my baby girl's crib and they've proven to be the highlight of her nursery!

xoxo,
Meredith

Spotted: Emma Roberts in Ban.Do!

You know how you get a little bit excited when you're flipping through a magazine and you see a celebrity wearing something that you also have? Well so do we! Our most recent celeb/product spotting was Emma Roberts in one of our Ban.do hair barrettes. She paired the star barrette with a formal dress for a pre-screening of The Great Gatsby (which if you haven't seen yet, go! go! go!). The Ban.do element added a touch of playfulness to an otherwise elegant ensemble.

We have several Ban.do barrette options available in our store... come pick out yours!

Open House & VIP Night!

Thank you to everyone who attended our first Bargain Basement! It was a huge success, and we can't wait for more in the future!

We especially had fun on our VIP Night which doubled as an open house for the new Riffraff offices. Twenty lucky girls got to bring a friend and have first dibs on our sale merchandise. They were also treated to champagne and treats as they shopped. We had a blast showing off our new offices and giving our VIP girls a little more insight into behind-the-scenes Riffraff!

Our sweet Kelsey, who organized the entire event, checking out a customer!
Our lovely friend, Meredith Benfield with owner, Kirsten Blowers
Katie and Lauren Waldrip waiting to enter the shopping area!
Sophie LeBlanc and Lindsey Little finding great deals!

Four things I love.

1.Kindness
Good style and taste are what drew me to Riffraff originally. Kindness and customer service are what made me a loyal .I’m the type of person that will visit a coffee shop daily because of my relationship with the barista (good coffee is fantastic, but get a barista that knows my order and  I’m practically married to the shop for life). I feel the same way about Riffraff. Upon first encounter, I loved their clothes but didn’t really have any reason to remain loyal to the brand- that is until I encountered Kirsten. Not only is she business savvy, but she has such a heart of gold. Last Summer I had to attend a major televised event, the Do Something Awards on VH1, for a not-for-profit I run-  Art Feeds.(www.artfeeds.org). As a non-profiteer I lacked time to shop for this event and completely lacked the money to feel pretty and fancy the way I wanted. When I reached out to Kirsten with a request to dress me and the Art Feeds staff for the event, she didn’t hesitate to help us feel full-fledged beautiful for the festivities.  I’ve been hooked on the brand ever since, because I was able to see the heart behind it, and man is it a BIG OL’ HEART. I’m just one story of many. It seems like I see RiffRaff in my Instagram every few days supporting another worthy cause. When I shop at Riffraff I’m pumped because I’m getting the cutest clothes around, but I’m even more confident in my purchase because of the kind hearts I know that work behind the scenes. Here’s a photo of the dress I wore to the Do Something Awards re-styled for everyday wear:

2.My hometown and my state
I’m a proud Missourian. I’m even more proud to be from Joplin, a community you may remember as wrecked and devastated on the news some years ago, but one that I know is deeply resilient and strong.  I love the “pull yourself up by the boot straps” attitude of the South. My roots grow deep in the Show-me-State, which is why the new RiffRaff State Love Summer line is perfect for daily Summer wears. I love that Riffraff is just a stone’s throw away from my Missouri hometown, with the same Southern work ethic and kindness as my home state. Missouri sits on Arkansas’ shoulders, after all. These tanks can be endlessly styled with the everyday Summer cutoffs, or in my case dress down my favorite RiffRaff dress I once wore to a fancy shindig, or better yet help me go all out “Missouri” in my attire with these fabulous cowboy boots  and lace I snagged from Riffraff  in the Fall:

3.Creativity
I’m in the business of creativity- literally. Art Feeds, the organization I founded, works to mobilize creative healing and encourage creative development in children. Creativity in every aspect of life is incredibly important to me. There’s some sort of statistic floating around the business world that your average salary will be that of your 5 closest friends. I don’t care much about salary, but I do think this applies to creativity. I work to surround myself with people that are more creative than I, that inspire me to be better daily. I can honestly say the Kirsten and the RiffRaff staff do just that for me,  so add that to the list of reasons I’m so in love with the brand.

4.Travel
I love culture and travel- exposure to new places and the adventure of new spaces is completely my jam. I’ve been lucky enough to travel quite a bit in the last year with Art Feeds. I’ve traveled to fashion capitals like LA and New York, to which I am usually clad in RiffRaff garb. I used to think my southern style would pale in comparison to these cities, but it never fails in my travels, I get asked about my clothes and accessories and receive countless asks of, “where did you get that?”, to which a can proudly answer “Riffraff, a startup shop near my home town” (“TAKE THAT” I think to those New Yorkers that believe style only exists on the left and right coasts) then I happily dole out the web site and know that everyone I encounter will be as happy a customer as I am. I was so proud of this headband I wore at an awards show in LA this winter, never have I had so many compliments on an accessory- and it was from Riffraff.

P.S. Check out this cool video from the Do Something Awards that Riffraff dressed me for! http://www.vh1.com/video/misc/827783/do-something-award-finalist-meg-bourne.jhtml

What are a few of the things you love?

In Honor and Remembrance

{In honor of the visitation and funeral being held today for our co-worker and friend Rachel Swetnam}

There really are no words to explain the loss of our sweet Rachel Swetnam. While we are all still grieving, we think Rachel would want us to focus on all of the fun experiences we had with her instead. Every person in our office agrees that Rachel brought joy to everyone she interacted with, she lived each moment to its fullest, and she permanently wore a smile.

Again, we have no words, but we do have memories. Rachel you will always be loved by your Riffraff family.

Congrats FHS Grads!

Fayetteville High School is near and dear to Riffraff, not only because it is our hometown school, but also because our owner and several employees graduated from ole FHS. Thus we are very excited for the 500+ Fayetteville students who are walking at graduation tonight. Two of our shop-girls are among the graduating seniors, so we want to take a quick moment to highlight them!

Aislinn is one of our spunkiest shop-girls. She has a huge personality and her funky-hippie style reflects it. Aislinn also has a soft spot for girly things, seeing as her favorite movie is Steel Magnolias, and her favorite singer is Colbie Calliet. She's really going to miss her "FHS family" and being able to procrastinate. Aislinn is definitely won't be able to procrastinate next year as she attends the University of Arkansas and majors in communications. Her dream job is to manage or be a spokesperson for a large corporation. But no matter where life takes her, she knows that God has a plan for her!

Aislinn is wearing a black fitted dress and lilac pendant necklace on the left, which is a great outfit for actual graduation. For a more fun look to wear to grad parties and such, Aislinn is modeling the lilac maxi on the right.

Macy is also a shop-girl, born and raised in Fayetteville. She loves traveling, photography, and people in general. Macy is going to really miss the diverse atmosphere of FHS and all of the friends she has made during high school. She claims to be very excited for her future, but wouldn't trade her past for anything. Next year Macy will attend the University of Arkansas but hasn't yet decided what to study. Her dream job would be to travel the world, filming documentaries and aiding different cultures. We love that Macy has a big vision, and can't wait to see where life takes her!

On the left, Macy is wearing a black lace overlay dress for a formal graduation look. But then on the right, Macy is wearing a floral shift dress that would be perfect for parties or other graduation events.

In Loving Memory

The Riffraff family is greatly saddened by the loss of a friend and long term co-worker, Rachel Swetnam, on the evening of May 14th, 2013. Rachel loved working at Riffraff. Her beautiful smile, infectious cheer, and great sense of humor filled our halls daily.

It will be the little things that we'll remember. The quiet moments, the smiles, the laughter, It will be the memories of these little things that help to push away the pain and bring back the smiles again.

She always has and always will be very near and dear to our hearts. Please respect this time of mourning for all of us here at Riffraff. Our prayers are with Rachel's family and friends at this time.

Celebrating our Riffraff Graduates!

In our hometown of Fayetteville, AR, everyone is in full on graduation mode. The University of Arkansas just held its ceremonies this past weekend, and Fayetteville High School students are graduating this Thursday. Several of our Riffraff girls are graduating this year, so we want to spotlight their past achievements and bright futures! Read about Sarah and Leah, who just graduated from the University, and check out their outfits for inspiration for your graduation and/or parties!!!
Sarah Sabatino worked at Riffraff as a shop-girl. She is originally from Edmond, Oklahoma, but came to school at the University of Arkansas to major in Apparel Studies. She is pursuing a career in apparel by working at Nordstrom Northpark Center in Dallas, TX! Her dream job is to eventually be a buyer for Nordstrom. What she'll miss most about college are the incredible friendships she's made and all the wonderful experiences she has had! "I could never narrow it down to one favorite college memory, there have been too many great moments that I will always remember!!" She was very involved in her sorority, Pi Beta Phi, serving as chapter president her senior year. Arkansas Greek Life awarded her 2013 Greek President of the Year. Sarah was also involved in the Apparel Studies Student Association. She could watch Harry Potter on repeat and lives on coffee (which she claims is definitely a food group). Though we're sad to see Sarah go, we can't wait to see what she does in the future!!!

Sarah is wearing a coral dress and turquoise necklace from Riffraff. These brights are perfect for a graduation party, classy but bold! Find similar looks at http://www.shopriffraff.com
Leah Nichols also worked as a Riffraff shop-girl, and just recently became our full-time Customer Service Manager/PR Director! Leah is from Nashville, Arkansas and came to the University of Arkansas to study Advertising and Public Relations. Leah graduated with an AD/PR degree, minor in General Business, and concentration in French...go girl! She admits to being cliche, but will says what she'll miss the most about college are her friends. She was a member of Delta Delta Delta and served as Panhellenic President. Leah was recently named Greek Woman of the Year! Leah's favorite movie is The Holiday, and she's obsessed with Chick-fil-a chicken minis and fountain cherry coke...oh and an occasional snickerdoodle. Her life quote is "Carry out a random act of kindness, with no expectation of reward, safe in the knowledge, that someday, someone might do the same for you."

Leah looks casual but cute in a cobalt blue shirt-dress from Riffraff. This could easily be dressed up or down for a variety of graduation events. Find similar looks at http://www.shopriffraff.com

Local Artist Spotlight: Jason Jones

One of our favorite things about Fayetteville is the local and artistic culture of the city. It's a unique atmosphere where small businesses are able to thrive due to the support of the whole community. Today we want to feature an incredible local artist and muralist who has done several commissioned projects for Riffraff.

"Having created more than 100 murals in the Northwest Arkansas area, Jason Jones has carved out a living as a muralist in the Ozarks for the past several years.  He has done a variety of themes in children's rooms, dining rooms, and other living areas.  Additionally, his work can be seen in various local businesses and public buildings."

Here is some of the work Jason has done at Riffraff as well as around Fayetteville. To see more of his art check out his website, http://www.artistjasonjones.com

2. No bags!  We do not allow large purses!  They take up too much room and we don't want anybody loosing their belongings.  Please stash bags in your car or just bring your wallet.  (Make sure you bring your picture ID for credit and debit card purchases and checks - we always ID)

3.  No returns on ALL sale merchandise!  Our bargain basement items are priced at 10% of our cost for these items so you'll find items that are missing buttons, arrived to us in the wrong color, or are the last one of it kinds and need a good home!

4.  Wear fitted clothing - we will not have a dressing room therefore it is much easier to throw on clothes over what you are already wearing.

5.  Arrive before 10AM!  If you're in line before we open the doors you receive an extra 5% off compared to those who walk in at 10am.  We want to reward those who are willing to sit outside just to make sure they get what they want - that's dedication!

6.  Drink your coffee before coming in - there will be no food or drink allowed in the Bargain Basement!

7.  If you need help don't be afraid to ask a shopgirl!  Shopgirls can help direct you, answer questions and even help locate an item that you can't find!  They're here for you so please use them as a resource.

8. Bring cash! We will be able to take your debt/credit cards but only if your purchase is $50 or more! As always, drivers license required for checks!

9. Pack your patience! We will only be allowing 20 shoppers in at a time due to the high amount of merchandise and small space! don't worry, we wont close up shop until you get your chance to shop!
We hope this helps!  If you have any other questions feel free to facebook/tweet/instagram us or call the store at 479.571.4000.  Happy Shopping!
