Moving Blogs

Dearest Blog Followers,

After purchasing a Mac Computer it has become so increasingly difficult to upload pictures on wordpress that I am officially moving to google blogspot. In one day I was able to upload pics to their blog site for the past 4 months whereas before this it would take a painful 30 minutes to get a blog posted on wordpress….too long in my world. Plus, I couldn’t for some reason get the pics to rotate the right position. Therefore, if you would like to continue to read the fun-filled adventures of the Hall Family please click HERE!

Ethan’s Girlfriend

paige-ethan-001

Mark my words. My boy Ethan will date Paige R. when she is older. Yes, there is  a 2 year age difference but my little guy loves “Paige-ee” Maybe it’s her long beautiful hair or her perfect indian skin, or, maybe, her amazing abilities with toy guns. Regardless, Ethan has a special spot for Paige.

Hamster Obituaries

hammy-lizzy-sleeping-003

Hammy “The Ham” Hall passed away in her sleep on January 29th, after nearly a year full of trauma and joy spent with Lizzy D. Hammy was loved by all, dropped by all, squeezed by all, starved by all and most importantly, held at all times by Miss Lizzy D. Her favorite past time was chewing holes through each of Miss Lizzy D’s shirts given to her by her Nana. She is survived by Miss Lizzy D, Sammy (our newest hamster received for Miss Lizzy’s bday), Soph, Ebug, and Drew. She has been buried in the back yard lovingly by her father and Miss Lizzy D.

Harry “The Hamster” Hall passed away in her sleep in February 4th, after not even one week of trauma and joy with Miss Lizzy D. Harry was purchased to replace the late Hammy Hall and truly was a joy for 6 full days. She was a short haired hamster, black and white. Her presence was so brief that no pictures were able to be taken and buriel occurred in the dumpster (shhhh…). Autopsy results will most likely put the cause of death related to the giant tumor protruding from her butt. She is survived by the 4 healthy Hall siblings and Sammy the hamster.

Fuzzy “Wuzzy” Hall unfortunately met her demise while being played with at a neighbors house. Neglect lead to her escape at which time the lovely Miss Lizzy D was heartbroken. No buriel will take place as Fuzzy is MIA. Fuzzy was received to replace Harry “The Hamster” Hall who replaced Hammy “The Ham” Hall.  The neighbor boy who was the culprit in assisting Fuzzy’s escape has repaid his debt to Miss Lizzy D with the latest addition of Nibbles “The cutie-pie” Hall. Fuzzy is survived by 4 crazy Hall children, and Hamsters, Sammy and Nibles Hall.

In leiu of flowers, donations to the Hamster replacement fund can be given directly to Miss Lizzy D’s father.

(Pictured above is dear Hammy who after so many spinal cord injuries due to fall was able to sleep peacefully with slumbering Lizzy.)

Holiday Bowling

bowling-017

As a family during the holidays we all went bowling with some good family friends.

bowling-015

The girls got the hang of it but preferred the ramp that Ethan used.

bowling-014

Brian took it serious and it didn’t help.

bowling-003

Yep, that’s right, Hot Mamma knows how to bowl…not really.

bowling-010

bowling-009

The highlight of the event was the slurpee drinking contest. Note to self, never challenge a Bennion in anything. Brian and Sarah went after the win and in the end…well…just take a look at Brian and you will know who won…

bowling-004

Sarah!

bowling-006

What you are looking at is 12 dollars in waisted slurpees!

bowling-001

But Ethan enjoyed his!

bowling-019

Here are some of the bowling elves we went with!

Pancakes and PJ’s

What could be more fun than hosting 50 kids for breakfast on a Saturday morning? How about 70+ and some adults! Sounds like fun to me!

primary-pj-party-002

We had a breakfast for all the kids in our church to meet their new teachers for the 2009 year. We assumed we would get somewhere between 30-50 kids since it was during the holidays and many families have other events/plans for that time of year. Well, apparently not in Medford because we had a huge turnout!!!

primary-pj-party-004

But when you have an activity where you are suppose to show up in your jammies, how can you take it that serious?

primary-pj-party-015

I won’t be showing you pics of me in my jammies but let me tell you, there was lace, there was pink, and a whole lot of flannel!

Christmas 2008

Christmas 2008 was spectacular. There were presents, there was paper, there were tender gifts made from the heart, and there was family….oh, and there was the best Eggs Benedict ever.

2008-christmas-001

Aunt Anne with an ‘e’ made this lovely apron for Lizzy and one for Sophie.

2008-christmas-002

Grammie Toodie gave this to Andrew. We all know he is desperately needing more legos.

2008-christmas-007

Roger and Roger sat there were half smiles just enjoying the morning.

2008-christmas-013

Lots of family sandwiched in our Living Room.

2008-christmas-003

Blaine is aspiring to be as good as his mom and dad in the culinary arts.

2008-christmas-008

Ethan could have been happy with one set of cars and lots of wrapping paper.

Roger “the cow whisperer”

img_1779

img_1782

img_1772

Roger last day of work is only 10 days away. I think I found his new profession….animal whisperer! It was a sad day to see these docile cows leave for the butcher…I say this as I ground up some fresh beef for tacos tonight. Roger promises never to tell me when I am eating Jack or Jill.

Christmas Pictures

christmas-clothes-001

We went to JC Penney for our annual christmas picture. Yes, many of you just barely got it. I was so proud of my little pack that I made them walk the whole mall with me to 1) show them off; 2) return an item at the opposite end of the mall. Santa yet again somehow managed to scare Sophie when he appeared around the corner at Macy’s. Tears were replaced with smiles with a cooke from Cookie Connection….mmm….chocolate marshmallow cookie…..mmm. I’m dieting today. Very grumpy.

Anyways, aren’t they cute?

1st Time Ice Skating

I took my 3 older kids and we went to the Rrrrrrink in December. The kids had their first experience on skates. Lizzy and Sophie took off immediately and were amazing little skaters for their first time.

ice-scating-018

Sophie spent the majority of the evening skating down the middle with her friend Nyah or holding Miss Sharon’s hand while she and Paige made loops.

ice-scating-020

Lizzy was racing around like a mad woman. She refused to leave her gloves on, her coat was soaked, and she spent >50% of her time on the ground but loved every minute of it. She has requested repeat performances but we haven’t made it yet.

ice-scating-015

I remember my mom’s beautiful white skates that I can picture her wearing as a teenager. I loved those skates and planned to wear them when I was a teenager. Sadly, I never had feet big enough to fit them. They were lovely though. I hope my mom still has them.

ice-scating-027

Andrew on the other hand continued to use his little “helper” to navigate the ice. He has been back on the ice since this evening and still continues to be on the walker.

bowling-021

I was pleased to not fall and was ginger on the ice for the first hour. Then relaxed and looped and looped the ice with my new found confidence. Truthfully, it had probably been 12 years since I had been in skates.

ice-scating-017

Andrew kept saying, “Take pictures mom, I’m ice skating!” I had a hard time controlling the giggles and snapping the picture.

ice-scating-021

Notice Sophie and Lizzy doing twirls in the background. This was a really fun night.

Morning Glory Breakfast

cute-dog-004

In Ashland there is this quaint little breakfast place named Morning Glory that is a favorite of many of my friends. I was introduced to the place last year.  It is located in historic Ashland with it’s ecclectic culture and people. It is not uncommon to pull into the parking lot and find it loaded with VW buses or Toyota Prius’s. Then you enter the quaint diner and find people reading The Audacity of Hope by our own Barack Obama. It is a popular spot for my friends when we need a “pick me up” or a “happy birthday.” Most of the dishes are things I could never even fathom how to make nor would make but they are delicious. There is nothing like a rich, syrupy (word?) waffle layered with cream cheese or an omlet with organic veggies and yummy meats……mmm….I’m hungry. If you ever stop to visit me in Medford. I promise you a treat. A trip to Morning Glory.

Ward Christmas Party

Our church had a christmas party complete with Santa Claus this past year.

ward-christmas-party-015

Lizzy was proud to proclaim that she had been the best little angel this year. Her mother remained silent.

ward-christmas-party-018

Andrew was an angel and just couldn’t help but smile and smile at Santa.

ward-christmas-party-014

Ethan reacted with fear but not enough fear to stay away. He wanted a candy cane.

Sophie…..well, Sophie remained a healthy 100 yards and in a different room away from this scary Santa. But made sure that I should tell him she too had been an angel. Mother again remained silent.

ward-christmas-party-007

After our time with Santa we watched a “Traditions of Christmas” program where many families came on stage and shared with others their holiday traditions. My favorite was the nativity.

ward-christmas-party-004

Afterward, I found my two boys covered in stickers as if they had been infected with the measles. They were also giggling. Brian was deliberately absent. And as far as Santa knew, my family was full of perfect angels. Again, I remained silent…but smiling.

Hoover Elementary Talent Show

Every year the Hoover Elementary School holds auditions for the annual Hoover Talent show. This year I was the proud mother of 3 participants.

hoover-talent-show-007

Andrew was asked to be a part of a group who did the “Haka.” The Haka is a war chant that is popular with several rugby teams and in particular the BYU football team, being a staple of their pre-game warmup. Watching him scream like a warrior was so cool. I was then flashing forward to when he and his buddies are doing this prior to their football game…or he could just be watching the game as a bystander with 20 girls around him. Either way, I know he will have a good time.

hoover-talent-show-008

Then my little darlings got up there with their kindergarten class and melted the whole audiences hearts with “Nibble Nibble Nibble” where it is “all for the love of you!” Yet again, my chest was even bigger as my little girls sang so well. I flashed forward to vocal choirs and dramatic plays in my mind for both of them, although Sophie has told me she is going to be on the football team.

hoover-talent-show-018

Then, Andrew, after only 4 months of lessons, got up on stage and played flawlessly his little piano number “The Happy Cowboy.” Brian and I were quite nervous as the piece was very technical for his abilities and he was going to play it by memory. I think I felt like I was going to pass out because of all my nervous anxiety. Brian too was quite nervous. But then, little Andrew walked out on stage in his new suit and played his heart out. The crowd erupted into applause and we were just about on the moon with joy as parents. Afterwards, we asked him if he was nervous and he replied, “No.” “Why not Andrew?” I asked. He stated, “Because I just wasn’t. I just went out and played the piano.” Oh, if he can only feel that way the day he finishes his oral exams for his Ph.D. dissertation in mechanical engineering.

Rozanne’s Birthday

rozannes-bday-006

My mother-in-law had a birthday on December 6th. I can’t figure out why these pictures won’t load correctly so please tilt your head accordingly. Isn’t she lovely. Very classy. Very elegant. Very generous. Very loving. Very charitable. Very…Rozanne. I am a lucky daughter in-law.

122008-rozannes-bday-003

Taylor made this yummy cake complete with gnosh (sp?). I don’t know what it is but I do know it is yummy. Anne found this awesome birthday candles, definitely a Cropper signature statement.

rozannes-bday-007

When asked where we should go for dinner, her reply, MUCHO GUSTO! No fancy restaurant, no sit down dinner, no waiter and tip, just fresh Mex and free guacamole coupons….I love this lady.

rozannes-bday-001

I am a lucky daughter in law. Happy Birthday Rozanne!

Last nights prayer…

3fdc015c-cd55-11dd-bb1b-0015170f92f8w

So I know for those of you who read my blog that I am now posting many November and December events. I have gotten woefully behind but am convinced that I should post these many wonderful events. I intended to not post anything current until I was current, which is only about 10 posts away…all drafts….all in progress. That was, until last night. I just got to post this now.

I was in the boys room saying nightly prayers with my son Andrew when he asked me to say the prayer for both him and myself. I said sure. The room got quiet, then Andrew quickly looked up and said, “Oh, and Mom, don’t forget to repent of all of your sins.”

I didn’t know if I should laugh or cry. Truthfully, I laughed internally, trying to keep the quiet reverence present in the room. Then, later, reflectively, I cried. He is a wise boy.

Thanksgiving

My parents, sisters Christina (boyfriend Ben), Chelsea, and Annejeanette came for Thanksgiving this year. They were there primarily for Andrew because he was to turn 8 and would be baptized during their visit. Our good friends from Salt Lake Toodie, Roy & Katie also came for Andrew’s big event.

img_0092

Nettie, in ever her typical fashion, had Lizzy wrapped around her finger. Netters really had the right approach to the whole mini-vacation. She just wanted to be with family. She didn’t need shopping, she didn’t need movies, she just wanted her nieces and nephews…and a few jabs at Brian.  Netters surprised me by not taking THAT many naps nor working from my house the whole weekend.

img_0058

Ben and Tina were great drama for us all to watch. We took way too long to relax and just be ourselves around Ben. 1st impressions are hard enough, let alone when they last 4 days! It took the kids all of 2 seconds to act themselves, many times to my dismay. Fortunately Ben has a good sense of humor and a strong back! Tina got the thumbs up from Brian about this guy. This is a big deal because Brian reads people pretty well.

img_0029

As usual, I got too little mommy & me time and need a repeat performance from my mom. She did what she always does, cleaned, visited, played super fun Grammie, played peacemaker, and cleaned some more.

img_0040

Chelse? Well, let’s just say if we could wrap her up in a package and bring her our house indefinitely we would. But unfortunately, there’s this thing called college and social life that calls for her in Idaho.

Vicky hosted our whole family along with the Rajagopal’s for Thanksgiving. The food was AMAZING FROM ALL THE PARTIES INVOLVED.

img_0152

There was a little rock band competition. Brian was an amazing lead singer!

arne-thanksgiving-003

And I won’t forget Vicky and Sharon shaking their thing and singing backup melodies.

Dad just chilled the whole time.

We had a little James Bond-ing time to prep for the latest new flick.

Once again, AMAZING FOOD!

Having Toodie and Roy was a royal treat. They are easy company and we love talking with them. And we all need a little psychoanalysis once and a while…to keep us real.

utah-visitors-001

Roy and Andrew bonded with a DS machine. Katie and the girls bonded especially with adorable clothing, movie flicks and lots of sweats.

Andrew is baptized

andrew-hall-baptism-005

It’s hard to put to words how special this day was. How fortunate Andrew was to have 3 sets of grandparents present. To have aunts and uncles there to show their love and support. And most importantly, that Andrew made this choice and understood what getting baptized as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

andrew-hall-baptism-014

Andrew has always had an inclination to make correct choices. Living here in this valley where he has to explain his religion and defend it at times, has been a great testimony builder for not only him but also all of us. We are proud of the example that Andrew is making for his siblings and family.

Utah Visitors and The Ranch

No trip to Oregon is complete without my family having an excursion to the Hall Family Ranch for some good old bonding with the horsies!

Ah, what a cute couple, so romantic there at the ranch!

Andrew turns 8

andrews-8th-birthday-009

Andrew turned 8 in November. I told him he could have a very special birthday party and that I would do anything he wanted, thinking we would go bowling or to a movie or out to eat. But, my little man wanted a Super Hero Party. I let him have his closest friends over for the party (2 girls and 6 boys). We bought white t-shirts and let his friends decorate them, then they decorated red capes, all looking like their very own Super Hero.

andrews-8th-birthday-021

After they had all created their costumes, we had a Super menu and each guest was very surprised with either a U.F.O. (mini pizza) or Light Saber (corn dog) for lunch.

andrews-8th-birthday-014

Afterwards we had two superhero games. The first being super string power (hit the superman poster with silly string), and the next being super silly actions (name that superhero).

andrews-8th-birthday-008

Andrew had a super hero blue cake complete with spiderman on top and never stopped smiling. He was a happy boy.

andrews-8th-birthday-001

Things I will most remember about Andrew at this age is his willingness to be obedient, his task oriented mannerisms, his amazing skills on the piano, his flourishing math abilities and amazing, heartfelt prayers at dinner time and also at bedtime.  Happy Birthday my dear sweet boy.

Slumber Parties at Nanas

Slumber parties at Nana’s are the most popular event in this household, especially for a little girl named Sophie. Throw some popcorn, a very dated Barbie video, some R&R with R&R and it is the perfect combination. The “Yo” is Sophie’s favorite bed and it MUST be at the bottom of the bedroom in Nana’s room. BUT, that can occasionally be usurped when the Aunties from Orem arrive. This trip was no different and the kids spent many nights at Nana’s while Netster, Chels, and the Eeners were in town who also just HAD to HAVE a Slumber party at Nana’s Too!.

Lunch date with Aunt Anne with an ‘e’

img_1753

Rozanne and I went to Anne’s house for lunch. This picture was our attempt at getting all the kids to be sitting with Nana. Good luck. Nana then proceeded to go to Charlotte, NC to visit 5 other grandbabies and will see an additional 5 other grandbabies in January with the birth of Liz’s little boy. Lucky Nana. Lucky grandkids. As Roger says, you can’t have too many tractors or grandkids!

Melissa Turns The Big 4-0

My friend Melissa turned 40 in September. She hates having her picture taken. She hates birthdays. She hates surprises. So we did all three for her and had a western themed small surprise party for her. I tell her all the time that she is getting to be older than dirt.

All my friends are nearing or have crossed the threshold of 40. Not me. Not for another 7 years. But I feel wrinkled and flubbery.

The party had the best ribs and tri-tip steak you could eat. I felt like a ate an elephant that night. Usually I don’t eat much meat, leaving that for when I am pregnant. But not this night. It was fun!

All I brought to dinner was Rice Krispy treats!

img_1655

This is a typical dessert provided by Anne at a family dinner. Well, with Roger and Rozanne recently out of town we had a gourmet pot roast meal with Anne & Taylor. Brian asked for 3rd helpings. I volunteered to bring dessert. My contribution: Rice Krispy Treats. Yep, pathetic.

Playing Cards

october-2008-216

I got the kids some Book of Mormon character “go fish” cards. This was the scene the night I gave them to them. So cute. Then, 10 minutes later, fights, mayhem, and then they were sent to bed. It was good while it lasted, but the peace after sending them to bed was even better.

Yep, even Jill has days when she can’t get it together!

I recently had a day when I just could not get on top of my home chores and my mother-in-law came over to walk with me that morning. She was literally shocked at the state of my home. Her reply, in candid honesty, “Oh Jill, you should take pictures of this and put it on your blog so that people know you are normal.” Anyone who is a mom should know that no mother in their greatest attempts could keep their house together….well….I should introduce you to one exception (my friend Holly). And therefore, folks, here is a few pics of my wonderful mess. I laughed pretty hard at her comment…then later questioned why I didn’t take her up on her offer to help me pick up the mess?

Ethan turns the Terrible Two’s

img_1801

I love two-year-olds. You take a cup cake, you take a Thomas the Train, you mix in a two-year-old tantrum and you call it a two-year-old birthday party. I had 3 little buddies of Ethan’s over for a birthday celebration (30 minutes in duration…heaven!). They each got a present, they all opened their present (trains), and then had a gourmet cupcake made by the lovely Anne with an ‘e.’

102008-tanner-and-ethan-002

Andrew’s buddy Tanner turns 2 the day after he does and these two couldn’t be any more similar. Give them cars, trains, or books and they are very happy campers. We are so grateful that Tanner and his family moved here.

Ethan then had a family dinner that night with his Nana & Grandpa and Uncle Taylor and Aunt Anne. He and Blaine played hard and then he crashed for the night. For the next several days he could do nothing but tell us all how it was his birthday!

‘Trunk or Treat’ -OR- ‘How much candy can I get in 20 minutes?’

img_1789

Ah, trunk or treat! What a great tradition! We line our cars up in the church parking lot and then load up on candy until every trunk is empty. The bonus for parents, having their friends see their church friends without driving them all over town to go trick or treating. You can hit 50 families in 30 minutes. The only problem is the mounds of candy the kids come home with, and it isn’t even halloween!

img_1794

Lizzie was our little Dorothy. She is using a special halloween bag her piano teacher gave her.

img_1795

It didn’t take Ethan too long to get the hang of it. Dad took Ethan around and after the first row was pretty much done. Andrew did 30 laps and got 5 pounds of candy. He filled his pumpking container and grabbed his first of two grocery sacks!

img_1793

My mom got these little pumpkin containers. Aren’t they cute? When I first saw them my teenage mentality said, “They aren’t big enough!” but in the under age 5 category, they’re perfect!

102008-trunk-or-treat-014

Sophie won the cutest costume award in my eyes! She played the part especially well!

img_1785

And then, you know, that crazy mom, she looked pretty darn cute too!

Roger’s Version of a Family Council

img_1740

And we’re worried about whether he will find something to do with his time when he retires in December? Puh-lease! I know exactly what he will be doing!

Halloween Party

102008-pumpkin-tshirts-004

More and more I am realizing that I can’t be everything to everyone nor do everything perfect. And, as we have been learning about in our sharing times in primary at church, everyone has different talents. Case in point, my lovely neighbor Lynley. Let me tell you, without her my kids would not have a fantastic creative party including pizza, movie, and a craft every year during Halloween. My contribution to this lovely annual tradition: 4 kids (to add to her 5 year old). This year it was tie-dye pumpkin shirts, last year ghosts made out of footprints. I had some pretty happy kids. The happiest of all was Ethan and his “punkin shirt.”

My Long Absence

122007-kids5

I recently got a new computer. My old one was on the fritz and I knew the day was coming when I needed to purchase a new one. I delayed as long as possible and now, I am back on track. The new computer is a Mac. I am not unfamiliar with Mac’s but it took me nearly two weeks to transfer the stuff (10,000 pictures-not a joke) over to an external hardrive and then onto my Mac for use in my blog. I am still learning how to import pictures with my Mac so because of that, thought I would give you some funny comments said by my adorable children.

1. Ethan grunting. Brian, “Are you going poop?” Ethan nodding. Brian, “Ethan why don’t you go poop in the potty?” Ethan, “I AM going poop in the potty dad!”

2. Ethan being held by his dad. Ethan points to Brians wrinkled forehead. Ethan pointing to that forehead, “What happened? You got oww wees?”  Brian, “Yeah, from your mommy.”

3. Sophie, while watching Jill dress. “Mom, is my bum going to get as big as yours?”

4. Andrew, after a lesson on the parable of the talents in church this past Sunday, “Isn’t it great that I got the most talents in our family mom?”

5. Lizzy, scolding her sister, “How many times do I have to tell you to pick up your toys? Don’t you ever listen?” Jill, on hearing this, “Where have you heard that Lizzy?” Lizzy’s response, “from you.”

Farm Boys

Nana & Grandpa went out of town for a week to North Carolina. While gone, we had the farm chores to do each day. This was Ethan’s favorite activity of the day. We are getting good work out of our two year old. Here are some pics of one of the chores days when he went with his buddy Tanner.

He feeds the cats.

img_8177

The cats were very happy with his “Martin-size” portions.

img_8178

He feed the horses apples, oats and hay.

img_8181

img_8187

He gathered the chicken eggs.

img_8188

And he picked up the old apples on the ground from the apple trees.

img_81851

Grandpa’s salivating for him to grow into his future 6′ 2″  and 250lb body so that he can start workin the hay fields!

Nana’s English Eggs

One Sunday evening, I wasn’t in the mood to cook as we had had a big lunch with friends. Brian decided he wanted a to have a blast from the past and he had Nana, Grandpa, and Aunt Anne over for English eggs. Roger thought they were just another way to ruin a perfectly good egg but based on the kids response they loved it! We even had the little egg cups for the eggs given to us by Nana Hall. She has quite the collection of these cups at the ranch and we had fun reminiscing about previous English egg meals.

102008-english-eggs-004102008-english-eggs-001

As you can imagine, Andrew wasn’t so interested in English eggs, if it isn’t a nugget, corn dog, piece of bread or a banana he finds it mighty yucky (Yes, we are working on this issue but after forcing one meal down him with the end result being a vomitous mess of corn, we are moving slow but steady.). He instead built legos and Ethan joined along. 102008-legos-002

Grammie to the rescue

october-2008-164

I wanted to go to Portland with some girlfriends to attend Time Out For Women, a church related two day event filled with motivational speakers. I asked my mom if she would come visit for a few days and fill in with grammie duties while I was away from home.

img_1713

She was thrilled and so were the kids. She came to soccer practices and games, piano lessons, and after school play dates.

october-2008-150

She even went walking in the morning with Rozanne and I. Ethan loved the never ending attention from two grandma’s at his beck and call.

october-2008-143

My mom loved her visit and I only wish it had been longer. Brian wished the same. He loved being pampered by two Martin women. Good thing my spouse likes his in-laws.

New Play Structure

Two women in their late 70’s bought a home down the street from us that had a huge play structure. They sold it to us for $200. Our good friends Nephi & Richard dismantled it for us and brought it over to our house on their huge flatbed trailer. They wanted to thank Brian for some medical care he had helped them with. Brian then assembled a portion of it in a spot we had created for a play structure. We had to sacrifice the swings and monkey bars but the parts shown are in action. I am going to give it a good coat of stain and call it good! It looks great in the spot too! Ethan thinks the fort is his own play house and loves to climb up in there and just look at the rest of us and what we are doing (usually, Brian working on our shed and I being his sidekick). I will show a final backyard makeover picture set when the shed is completed. We are shooting for Thanksgiving, making this project just shy of 7 months!

Oh to be young again…and this time girly!

My friend Lynley decided to have a little girl’s spa day for her daughter and her friends. My two daughters were invited and instructed to show up in their jammies.

102008-spa-party-007

The walked in to a full on day spa. After a little snacks and finger foods…

102008-spa-party-004

A facial….

102008-spa-party-005

A pedicure….

102008-spa-party-001

A manicure…

They were a picture of health and rejuvination. Oh, and also very girly. Now, as a child I would have never shown up to an event like this nor let anyone touch my nails. But for a day, I wished I could rewind 28 years and hang out with the little ladies.

My Girls Start Kindergarten

Lizzy & Sophie started kindergarten in September. Here in Oregon they start the Kindergartners on the Friday of the first week to “ease” them into school. They call it a “slow start.”  If only the district understood my girls were more like hungry wolves craving the great nutrition of education and not lazy cattle slowly chewing their letters like it was some passive non-essential thing. Well, the Friday they started Andrew was with his dad in Seattle watching BYU (currently ranked 8th) beat Washington. Go BYU!

Poor girls, I was hoping big brother Andrew would guide them to their class and make their first big ride ok. Instead, I had a million church members who ride the bus look after them. I made 20 phone calls the night before they were to board the bus making sure there were kids on the bus that would look after them. I felt it important not to tailgate behind the bus or to watch with my binoculars in my minivan as they arrived at the school. They had to grow a little today.

I am also glad they had each other. I debated about sending Sophie to school this year as she makes the deadline by only 9 days. So far it has worked out and she is learning slowly but surely. That 7 months age difference makes a huge difference in abilities. And, 7 months after Lizzy figures something out, Sophie is right there too. But they are good friends to each other at school and have formed a little group of friends that they pal around with.

Ethan waits at the bus stop every morning with them. He gets so excited the moment he sees that bus. He waives good bye. Blows kisses to the scruffy faced, bushy eyed, bus driver Lynn which usually gets a wry smile out of him. And then returns to the house with mom where he bundles up in his blankies in the stroller ready for a walk with Nana and then his precious reading time.

Having never had just one home before during the day I feel like I am on vacation….for the first 30 minutes I am home. Then, Ethan wants to play the rest of the day and nothing get’s accomplished. I rejoice when the girls get off the little kindergarten bus at 11am and rush to the door to see Ethan. Insta-friends! My afternoon time with the girls is largely filled with play dates and homework. I have to do homework with each of them separately as they are so fiercely competitive that they can’t be kind to each other at the table. But it is working and they enjoy the individual attention they get.

Today the girls and I watched old family film footage of them when they were little. We laughed so hard at Lizzy’s large head and Sophie’s blank stare. Even Ethan thought the video was funny as he thought he was the child on screen with little Sophie. We put two pigtails in his hair and yep, you had Lizzy. He kept laughing until he saw Lizzy and Andrew in the tub together and he kept asking where his penis was. (yep, we tell our kids the correct anatomical terms….although for forever Ethan thought his penis was a Tina. Aunt TIna didn’t find this amusing.)

Anyways, the girls are doing great in Kindergarten and another milestone has been met!

Chick Night Out…and we let Ethan be an honorary girl for the night

Brian, Roger, and Andrew made a quick trip to Seattle for the Washington Huskies versus BYU Football game a couple of weeks ago. They had a blast, of course, took no pictures, but came back full of smiles. They even went to the team fireside the night before the game. The only frown was found on my face when I disinfected the odorous (smelly fluffs of air) car that also had crushed chips, pretzels, sticky candies, goo, clothes….etc sprayed throughout. I had to leave the windows down for about 3 days to get the smell to dissappear. It was a toot machine for sure!

While the boys bonded like cavemen, the girls and I (and our honorary girl for the night Ethan) went to Holmes park for a “High School Musical” party. My friend Tracey had gotten a box of assorted high school musical stuff given to her from one of her family members. She let Rachel throw a party complete with High School musical chairs, cheerleading, singing, playing on the play structure, pizza dinner, and of course, nail painting. The kids had a blast and came away with prizes including H.S.M. t-shirts, stickers, posters, and the CD. Boy did we feel special. The only incident was when Ethan won a t-shirt and was so excited he put it on to show his dad, who was none too pleased to see his son in a pink t-shirt.

A love letter

Dear Brian,

Words cannot express how much I love you at this very minute but I will try anyways. After cleaning the vomitous food particles off the particle board behind the sink, on the cabinet floor, and on the pipes for 3 months, I cannot express enough my joy for the gift you gave me today. Thank you for the In-sink-erator Garbage Disposal you installed today. I am so grateful that I married a fix-it man who can calm a desperate woman’s cries with his trusty wrench and “I can do anything” attitude (or is it arrogance?). Anyways, I love you, love you, love you, no flowers are now necessary for the next year of our marriage. And as a added bonus, I will make you a chili-cheese burrito at any hour…even 11pm at night!

With Love Always,

Your Darling Jill

So cute!

My friend Janet got a new camera and just snapped some pictures of my daughters with two of their best friends. The end result was something worthy of a catalog, picture book, framed art….but I am not bias. Yep, these girls will be trouble when they are teenagers….little princesses!

Sophie turns 5

Yep, I really did it, I splurged and hosted a birthday at a location. No 79 cent Betty Crocker Cake, no 5 dollar pinata, I reserved the Train Park.

I let Sophie invite all her little girl friends and their siblings and for 2 straight hours we went around and around this 10 acre complex oohing and aaawing. Loved it!

Then, we ate Costco sheet cake, opened presents, threw trash in the can, and walked away. No mess….no stress..

Best party ever EXCEPT FOR ONE THING….when inviting 20 kids (because we want to get our money’s worth and invite everyone)….remember to write “no gifts please” on the invite, or your child gets more gifts than she would have for then next 4 years.

Handsome Little Guy

Some people look at my Andrew and can’t envision that he was ever a little cherub that I thought was so squishy that he would pop (check out the umbilical hernia as evidence he did pop). I just remember his big brown eyes that would so solemnly stare back at me. People who saw him would ask if he was a sad child. No, not sad, but clearly a bit more astute at what his surroundings were about. He has a special spirit

As he grew the cherub body melted away and hair began to grow.

Teeth were lost.

And muscles were made. Andrew wanted pictures of his “12 pack.”

Here you go my boy…and what a handsome boy at that!

Our Exciting Trip to the Library

Ah, so cute, look at my little munchkins sitting at the little chairs at the library reading books and look, they even are checking out some books, 12 total. Wow, what a great mom I am, so good to take my kids to the public library. Medford didn’t have libraries 6 months ago as they can’t figure out how to fund them other than timber money from the federal government. Makes me wonder why the rest of the country has figured it out but they haven’t.

Now, before you start thinking about how horrible you all are as mothers because you aren’t as cool as I am and take your kids to the library let’s hear the truth from Jill.

1. This is our first trip to the library in 3 years.

2. It has been our last trip to the library too.

3. Yep, I’m lame.

4. Good thing we have a good bit of books at home the kids enjoy. Got to get reading more.

Moonlighting as a Barber

Prior to leaving to start a PhD in Idaho, my brother-in-law Steven asked his brother to cut his hair. He had been wearing a very cute surfer shaggy hair style and was ready for a change. Brian, of the military crew cut preference, helped give him that clean look Steven was requesting. Brianne and I watched with a little bit of fear as to what would appear after the cut.

First Brian gave him the reverse mohawk…

Then we all said goodbye to the mullet…

Then, some final detail work and Steven was looking schnazzy…

But I told Brian to keep his day job.

McCain & Palin All the Way!

I went to a Sarah Palin party this past week with a bunch of women. It was a great excuse to have lunch with my friends and then watch Sarah Palins address at the Republican Party Convention. I had watched it the night she delivered the address and laughed tremendously at the digs she had delivered to the Democrats. But truthfully, despite the jabs, I wanted more substance to her talk. We had fun at the party though and one of my friends brought a whole bunch of talking points about Palin, the republican platform, and volunteer forms.

NObama '08 Bumper Sticker bumper stickers

My uncle, a very outspoken Obama supporter who shares his “Mormon for Obama” bumper stickers online through the family e-mail list and comments about how his church parking lot is united in Obama faithful infuriated me with his very public stance to the family, a very REPUBLICAN family. Course, this Uncle has always been the oddball in the family (love ya Dan!). For you uncle Dan, I have only one message:

No Obama! Postcard

So, I am going to verbalize my thoughts on the Republican ticket for all to see.

28% on profit from ALL home sales.  (How does this affect you? If you sell your home and make a profit, you will pay 28% of your gain on taxes. If you are heading toward retirement and would like to down-size your home or move into a retirement community, 28% of the money you make from your home will go to taxes. This proposal will adversely affect the elderly who are counting on the income from their homes as part of their retirement income.)

Many families have lost businesses, farms, ranches, and homes that have been in their families for generations because they could not afford the inheritance tax. Those willing their assets to loved ones will only lose them to these taxes.

New government taxes proposed on homes that are more than 2400 square feet.  New gasoline taxes (as if gas weren’t high enough already) New taxes on natural resources consumption (heating gas, water, electricity)  New taxes on retirement accounts, and last but not least….New taxes to pay for socialized medicine so we can receive the same level of medical care as other third-world countries!!!

Cousin Fun

Liz & crew came into town for some R&R at the Hall family spa. She indulged in free babysitting, good organic food, built in play dates, morning glory breakfasts, and some recreation at the cabin and on the Rogue River in a raft. Our favorite activity was the nightly sleepover with one of her children which my children thoroughly enjoyed as they were able to feast on popcorn, soda, and candy nightly for 10 straight days!!!

Of course, what is a cousin get together without a pinata for the cousins with birthdays (Jon & Sophie)

Here is the pre-pinata picture.

Aunt Jill introduced them to real processed food including mac-n-cheese.

The trio helped me decorate cupcakes (shhhhh…don’t tell the other cousins we weren’t necessarily all that hygenic).

Summer Olympics

I, like most of you, was glued to my TV during the broadcast of the Olympics. I couldn’t get enough swim, basketball, beach volleyball, and gymnastics. I loved it. When I was a junior in highschool my dream was to be on the women’s olympic basketball team. Good thing nobody had the heart to tell my you have to be preordained at birth, spend thousands of dollars to be on “special” teams, and practice nothing but basketball to be at that level of play. I couldn’t have made BYU’s practice team let alone the Olympics. But I had a dream. My little girls have a dream of swimming across the pool. You know what, I am going to provide every opportunity for them to fullfill their dream, which is easy when Nana has a pool. We will see what their future lofty ambitions bring them….maybe a doctor and an entymologist (sp?)…or maybe a dallas cowboy chearleader and an american idol…or maybe two wonderful moms which beats an olympic basketball player anyday.

Envy

This is gorgeous Anne (hot mama) after she has created Tay’s amazing cupcakes for his birthday and also Anne’s cousin Matthew’s Bday. Let’s face it, I’m envious….hair, makeup, body, cupcakes…

This is Blaine really enjoying his dad’s chocolate cupcakes.

This is cute Aunt Sarah getting quality time with the Rog.

This is Taylor saying I don’t need this fanfare on my birthday, but I will keep the Bastille day Song. I will never forget the metro line.

And of course Rog is full of happy cream.

Ethan’s First Hair Cut

The pictures tell the whole story.

There was fighting, there was screaming, there was an angry dad holding down an angrier child (while mom literally giggled at the site behind the camera), and then there was a lollipop. But, sometimes it just has to be done. No child should wear a mullet these days. Even if his hair is blond.

4th of July

Christina & Jason joined us for the 4th of July this year from Seattle. We loved their visit. We started the day with a patriotic breakfast at the church including a bike parade and flag ceremony. We honored our veterans with gift bags and heard where each of them had served. Now a days I find it more heart felt when we honor our veterans. Then we all went and spent the night at the Hall family cabin at Lake of the Woods. Jason &  Joshua caught a million little fish with worms. We all had a good time catching the little Pertch.

That night we sang primary songs as we waited for the fireworks which were well worth the wait as they went on and on and on and were amazing.

The next day Anne & Taylor and crew joined us for some summer sun, boat rides, and swimming on the dock.

It was a great 4th of July. Christina is due soon with #3 and is a fantastic mom. We need more moms like her having lots of babies!

Lyle Lovett

I went to a Lyle Lovett concert with some good friends and brought my sister along to enjoy the show. Lyle Lovett was at one time married to Julia Roberts. That is about the extent of my knowledge about the man and his music. Two things stuck out before he started singing: his hair is just like kramers and he is surprisingly really short. It was a fantastic show, fabulous singing and beautiful songs. I was in heaven. The comedy of the night was watching Chelsea text message her friends throughout the show telling her friends how her “old” sister was dancing on the front row of the concert with two other 30 something friends. Oh, the memories!

Cool $100 Glasses

We went to the Jackson County Fair while my sister was there. After the $26 to get us in, $4 to park, $15 in junk food to appease the children’s appetites, $20 in tickets to ride the ridiculously expensive rides,

all I got were some lousy glasses (which ended multiplying into $35 in glasses for all of us). Yep, that’s what I got out of the Jackson County Fair, a hundred dollar pair of glasses…

…Oh….and Ethan making me smile by saying “Poke” while poking the turtles shell.

Backyard Fun: What happened to the slip-in-slide?

This makes my slip-in-slide look pathetic! Good thing I have a neighbor who likes Costco toys even more than my mother does and will buy the big ones. Let me just say this is like having a water park in your backyard. The best part is that it isn’t my backyard but the neighbors! Check out my nephew Blaine. He was fearless and went down all the slides. Ethan just sat at the top and waived hi!

Hammy The Hamster has 6 lives left

News flash…Hammy the Hamster has now survived being run over on a scooter, dropped from a backpack, and nearly drowned while getting a “bath.” AND, he still lets Lizzy cuddle with him, sleeps in her hands, and never bites. Plus-pellet size poop and a need to refill food/water every 2 weeks.

Best Pet of the Year Award: Hammy the Hamster

Chelsea Slumber Parties

Dear Chelsea,

The children complained last night that I am no fun. They want you back. Who else has fun slumber parties with them every night and decorated their arms with body art and then tells them to hide it from their mommy? I have now had to revert to changing every diaper of Ethans, even the poopy ones. My house takes hours to clean instead of saying you clean it while I eat bon bons and watch TV. I have to hire babysitters now and can no longer just run an errand without putting 4 munchkins in the minivan with me. And worst of all, I don’t even know which channels ran that hair cut show or that fashion show, was it TLC, HGTV? Who else is going to surf channels for me?

P.S. Thanks for the sweat note. I am now going to include your “Top 10 reasons I forgot why I love Oregon!!!”

1. Honey and chicken nuggets (who knew?)

2. The endless stomachs your kids have (Andrew & 5 eggs, Lizzy & 4 chili cheese, Sophie & 10 chicken nuggets).

3. Pippy Longstocking inspired mopping

4. The never ending project list

5. Having something to offer now (bailing hay, painting, making jam, and chili cheese burritos)

6. Ethan wearing sunglasses at church

7. Doing 2 loads of laundry a day is normal

8. Never having soap in the bath tub

9. Andrew’s cross from bible camp completely decorated with sparkles nad feathers

10. Listening to the “Sound of Music” tape over and over and over in Roger’s suburban!

1st Cut of Hay 2008

Each summer we now have the opportunity of helping Roger & Rozanne with their hay crop. We really do love it. There is nothing like working outdoors overlooking the beautiful views from this farm and sweating a little bit. But, being a hay farmer means that you have to really work at timing the cut of that first crop of hay. This is complicated by even the lightest of potential rain falls. Wet hay can devalue the hay by half. And, the first crop of Hall hay was further complicated by a late cut because of vacations/work schedules. But, when all was said and done, we loved being out there in mid-June. There were approximately 2000 bales that were created and we put nearly all of them in the barn ourselves! There is no better memory than seeing Nana driving the tractor while Roger, Brian and I load the trailor. This year we also benefitted from Steven’s help, Mike & Ezra’s help, and we won’t be forgetting how Sam Cloward persevered through a horrendous bout of hay fever, allergies, and asthma. This all occurring from the moment he first started to load hay. It didn’t stop him, even though he was miserable.

I hope that this continues to be a wonderful experience for my kids to participate in as they grow older. They really learn what hard work is and truthfully, working together as a family makes us stronger and deepens our feelings for one another. The 2nd cut is just around the corner. By labor day it will all be completed…and then we will be dreaming about the next June’s cut again.

Hall Family Reunion 2008

Nestled under the shadow of Mt. Timpanogas is the BYU Alumni Aspen Grove Family Camp. Clearly, this is the first vacation experience where a mother must have been in charge of designing the family trip. All meals, entertainment and lodging were perfectly provided and packaged into the most awesome bonding experience for the Hall family clan.

We arrived Saturday afternoon and were thrilled to be together with everyone. Kathryn and Stu flew in from Charlotte, North Carolina and we all gawked at the transformation both he and Kathryn had made physically. If there was a biggest losers contest for pre-reunion get togethers, they would have won. The rest of us would have been booted off the show within the first week…and truthfully….you should have seen us eat! All-you-can-eat meals were provided but that didn’t stop us from eating chocolate covered strawberries, pounds of Harry and David Moose Munch, Nana Rozanne fudge, Hummus, Salsa, Chips, Candy….and how could I forget the 20 boxes of Girls Scout cookies compliments of Bridget’s Girl Scout troop.

The camp events began with an orientation meeting for parents and our first experience with our kids being wisked away by magic happy counselors who made each and every child feel important and loved. What was even better was that every cousin had another cousin in their group, except Seamus, but he IS a teenager and that would have been so uncool. The highlight of the orientation meeting, other than finding out when our where meals were, was the fact that they handed out awards to families who had tenured at Aspen Grove the longest. The winning family was a couple who were attending their 26th camp at Aspen Grove. They won a frisbee. Steven made the best comment of the night when he quipped, “If they have been here 26 times, why are they showing up at the orientation meeting? Must be some frisbee!”

Having experienced Aspen Grove as a child I quickly assumed the duties of Hall Family Event Coordinator. I raced over to the camp board that had all “elective” activities posted and filled the Hall family adult schedule up with random activities that Hall family members would never had signed up for had I not been there. These events included archery, rifle shooting, remote control race cars, ropes/repelling course, paintball, dance dance revolution, and a basketball tournament.

Quite the Maid Marions! (sp?) I think this turned on their Robin Hoods!

Steven took the top prize, I proudly hit the target once!

Brian has always said he was the top dog driver. He then proved it on the mini-race track. For the record, several Hall family members didn’t complete the course and yep, they still have drivers licenses. Nana couldn’t get her car to drive in a straight line, this was no surprise to anyone!

Paintball was probably the highlight elective activity of the week. Picture 8 Hall members/in-laws taking out that loving family aggression on each other in a hard fought game of steal the flag. Initially, no one truly wanted to hit another as to not wanting to hurt their family position (or inheritence), but after the first shots that landed were Stu’s as he pelted Roger repeatedly, he yelled out, “That felt good!” Then all mayhem broke out. The best target practice was Brian’s pelting of Steven repeatedly in the butt as he was retreating in the “free zone.” Brian said he just couldn’t help himself. Taylor was on Brian’s team and was sent out to get the flag while Brian was to give cover. The only problem was the cover given was to Taylors back! Many family members ended up with paint ball hair, paint ball clothing, and most importantly, paint ball welts. And how can we forget our infamous elective sports tour guide, whose background as a marine trainer proved much more superior to our own paintball/archery/rifle skills…oh….and how can I forget Dance Dance Revolution!

Dance Dance became not a show of whose the better dancer (which we all know the Liz, Anne, and Kathryn are), but was a show of who is technically savvy, i.e. Jill and Brianne. Rozanne, for all her attempts, just could not comprehend where to put her feet, even as Matt was on the ground putting his hand out to show her where to step. We love you Rosie!

The ropes proved to be challenging to some, a quick scamper (Brianne & Steven) to others. Grandpa tried, and nearly made it up the pole. The rest made it up the pole, the rock wall, and then across the ropes. Matt, being brave, let go of the ropes and dangled there on the lines-Crazy! The only part of the ropes course I didn’t like was the harness on my thighs accentuating their gigantic status, especially in the Hall clan! We did the ropes course on two separate days. Ethan came to watch one day and wanted to do some climbing of his own.

Our lodge accomadations were cozy to say the least. There was plenty of hot water, plenty of bathrooms, plenty of sleeping quarters but a lack of privacy. There was no hiding your morning hair, breath, or dirty socks! They were on display for everyone. But regardless we all felt well rested-er-maybe not Stu as he frequently ended up out on the sofa with Henry-who is the most adorable little Hall-Brown! We adults would mandate bedtime for all the cousins/kids despite their ear shot distance from us. We then would stay up till midnight chatting as we Hall family members do so well about all sorts of things…babies…tractors….hay…breast feeding…jobs…kids…movies…movie quotes…politics…food…

Speaking of food, the dining hall provided 3 gigantic meals daily complete with your choice of bottomless refills of both food and beverages. The kids experiemented with all of the flavors, then mixed some, then tried some more, at every meal. The food was great…reminiscent for some family members of their days in the dorms. Even if the meal didn’t appeal to our kids, there was always bread/butter, chicken nuggets, or some other baby food that would be an acceptable food substance. And the best part about it, no preparing, delivering, or cleaning up of each meal. We simply walked away, checking our watches for when the next meal bell would ring, like Pavlov’s dogs we would begin salivating. The funniest thing was that the food was relatively healthy and I happened to lose 3 pounds while gorging myself. Who would have thought?

The grandkids had a blast! Each day they would dissappear from 9am-Noon and Mary, Blaine and Ethan were together in their group. Lizzie, Sophie, Jon and Coleman were together as “Kittens” (who by the way could yell a little louder). The trio, Max, Ben and Andrew were together as “Cubs.” Sam & Bridget were “Panthers.” And Seamus was an infamous “Cougar.” The kids had a theme each day which would dictate their activities. They were cowboys, pirates, and detectives. They would play on play structures, climb a rock wall, do arts and crafts and even swim in the pool with the temperature outside hovering around the low 60s.

They even shaked their booty and sowed us how to YMCA!

Despite the endless noise, confusion and clutter, Grandpa found the vacation pleasant. We only found him out on the porch away from everyone once, and that was so he could curl up with a good book!

We even put on a skit at the family talent show. Steven’s authentic “moos,” Grandpa’s version of Pa and his cow, the kid’s great tree swishing, and we will never forget the Tony Award winning performance put on by Rozanne as “Ma.”

We adults also made time to explore our inner artistic groove. Brianne, Anne and myself dazzled everyone with our painting abilities, Liz, Stu, Bridget, Kathryn, and Rozanne made amazing pottery creations…and the key word is creations.

The camp also had an Aspen Follies day where we worked as a team to show our athletic abilities. We were all surprised with Brian’s competitive streak in these family affairs as we were expecting him to mock the activities, not attempt to help us with the giant ball competition!

Aspen grove thought of everything as even Steven, Anne, and Kathryn received birthday cakes for their birthdays they celebrated that week.

Despite all of the activities there was still plenty of time to relax at the lodge. If you weren’t too keen on the noise you would find family members engaged in a mediocre game of tennis! Ethan and Blaine loved running around on the court.

Anne and I attempted to to even do a little hike. Stu, Matt, and Kathryn had taken the Stewart Falls trail on various mornings. We thought we would do the same. This picture was taken 20 minutes to us discovering we were lost! Anne and I phoned for help and our superheros Stu and Matt arrived to rescue us from dissaster. Truly, the only one who felt the pain of our brief dissappearance was sweet little Roger who was quite hungry!

Overall we had a wonderful time together. Thanks Nana and Grandpa for the memories!

Don’t Hate Me Because I am Beautiful!

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah and I have to go through the teenage years with my girls! My sister Chelsea who is staying with us for part of the summer is already instructing them in the fine art of sassy faces….or maybe fish lips?

Growing Things

With our newly remodeled backyard we now have 3 grow boxes for a summer garden. Now, living near the infamous Hall family garden means that there is not much that needs be grown since Nana and Grandpa have this down to a science. But, the kids have really enjoyed going out and checking our little garden. I am proud to say that I am successfully growing potatos, zucchini, onions, and a pumpkin. I am unsuccessfuly growing bell peppers, beans, and the carrots are dead. It’s a start right?

We also planted several little shrubs and and plants in a little island in our backyard (pictures forthcoming). It looks wonderful and all of these plants were dwarf plants/shrubs thereby lending themselves to staying small and cute. Sophie came with Nana and I shopping for plants at a local nursery that has a koi pond. Sophie loved watching the fish. She quipped, Nana, get your camera and take a picture (obviously both Nana and I have cameras at all time for all things and all places). And of course, we took pictures.

I coached Andrew’s soccer team this year with my good friend Tracey. We went undefeated in both the fall and spring league’s. Rumors went around that we were elite soccer athletes and that we had been performing additional training and soccer camps with our kids to ensure our top spot in the league. Rumors also went around that all of our kids were from rich families and they paid extra for all these “perks” to our team. When Tracey and I heard these rumors we just roared! If they only knew the truth that Tracey had never played a day of organized soccer, I played in High School and on a few intramural teams in college, and that our team was not made up of rich kids, in fact, we went to the lengths of picking up a few kids from their daycares en route to practice. Tracey and I would like to think that our stellar coaching and practices was what lead to our success…truth is the boys were just athletically gifted. The only thing unique about our coaching was that it was not uncommon for one of us to be in a skirt when arriving at the game…very un-soccer coach like!

Train Park Fun

Every year the Westminster Presbyterian preschool hosts a field trip to the train park. It is a 15 acre complex with miniature trains that you can ride. It is a blast even for parents. I took all 3 of my youngest and helped a friend out with her two. I had 5 under the age of 5 and it was chaos. Most of the other parents looked at me like I was crazy. I just replied, “Hey, I’m a Mormon!” and smiled…..just kidding. I did smile though.

Dinner Time Mess

As a mother, I have learned that I tend to allow my kids to get messy during meals. I rarely pull out a bib and usually they all feed themselves, lending to messy meals. This picture does not do justice to the mess that Ethan had pulled off. He had tipped a bowl  of soup over on his head and there was soup splatters everywhere. His response, a large grin.  My response, “Where’s my camera?”

Lego Maniac

Andrew has made an amazing assortment of vehicles, spaceships, forts, and other lego creations over the years. He doesn’t have an end to his creativity. Recently, while trying to keep him from bugging his sisters, I told him he had 2 minutes to make a creation out of legos. I set the timer and the end result was that Andrew made a “Lego Buddy.”

Sleepy Ethan

Ethan was eating lunch recently and was so tired he fell asleep while putting mac n’ cheese in his mouth. Before putting him in be I snapped this pic.

Early Summer Fun

It has been unseasonably cool here in Oregon the past several weeks. We have had nothing but 60’s and scattered showers. This has been particularly hard to deal with from a hay standpoint as there has not been a window to cut and bale the hay. There happened to be a 3 day window of 90 degree temperatures randomly thrown into the weather pattern and my girls took advantage by playing on the slip-in-slide in the backyard. It was so fun to have them playing in our flat backyard!

Another Utah Vacation….and wedding!

For 3 years we have lived in Oregon and, with few exceptions, the only vacation time Brian has taken off, has been trips to Utah, usually for weddings or trips to Bear Lake. He also has the blessed opportunity each summer to spend a week at scout camp. So, a 5th Martin wedding was on the schedule this time around and we went the week prior to the wedding to focus the majority of our time with my family. On the road there, within the first hour, Elizabeth began the, “Are we there yet?” questions. Then Sophie chimed in. Brian, to their delight, promised treats at each gas station if they could hold their urine for each 3 hour segment, and McDonalds in Winnemucca. It was a very long day which didn’t start until 10am as we left a day early after Brian rounded on patients in the hospital. Brian, after being patient for 8 of the very long hours with the kids, blurted out, “Why do you like going to Grammie’s so much?” Andrew’s reply, “I like her swingset and being pushed by Grammie.” Sophie’s reply was to see Teddy. Brian quipped, “Well Jill, that settles it, to save on these long road trips let’s buy a swingset and get a dog!

Once we arrived, the kids were in heaven. They never had to leave the house with so many aunts and grammie to entertain them. Chuck-E-Cheese was one of their only outings…along with many trips to Costco with Grammie. The kids had fun playing in the backyard, building forts, taking Teddy for walks around the cul-de-sac, and Grammie’s chicken nuggets.

Ethan loved playing with all of Grammie’s toys and yep, even in the family room with a TV you could find the kids picking up my sister Chelsea’s crazy habit of watching a movie on a little portable DVD player.

Because of the timing of our trip we were able to see my sister Michelle graduate from graduate school at the University of Utah. This was followed by dinner at Chili’s. The most comical part of the night was cramming us all down this very long table and yep, lots of noise as we Martin’s are famous for. Everyone was fighting to be heard!

Then, the happy day arrived and my beautiful, wonderful, cheerful, fantastic, sexy sister Michelle wed Andrew Cardon, who we all adore. We were hoping these two would tie the knot as we liked him so much and they seamed so happy together.

Ethan had very little patience for the days events but was happy to be in his dad’s arms. Lizzie and Sophie just wanted to follow their Aunt Michelle around like little princess helpers. The day couldn’t have turned out more beautiful, although the temperature was slightly chilly in the 50’s. Despite this, we were thrilled there was no snow (like the day before), or rain to dampen the days festivities, including an outdoor wedding at my folks house.

Yep, only Michelle could get me in a flourescent pink dress. I have to admit. The colors were beautiful. My kids also looked so adorable.

Michelle wed Andrew in the Jordan River Temple. My parents then put on the luncheon in their church cultural hall. Andrew wanted to ride his scooter to the church so we drove slowly watching him push his scooter the 1/2 mile distance.

The biggest shock at the luncheon was when Brian stood up to roast Andrew a bit. Now, we all know that Brian isn’t one to draw attention to himself and rarely speaks to public gatherings, but he couldn’t let this opportunity pass without extending his congratulations to the new married couple.

My mom made the wedding cake and as usual did a fantastic job. The turnout was amazing especially considering this was only one side of the family as Andrew’s family was from Arizona. The line extended out the back yard for most of the night.

Our trip was so much fun and sadly came to an end too quickly. Fortunately, I am in the midst of packing for another trip to Utah this coming Friday, this time a Hall family reunion. Brian can barely stomach thinking about the drive again, this time in a rental as I had my first car accident this past week. But, as usual, I can’t get to Utah fast enough and am so excited to wrap my arms around my nieces and nephews, and my mommy and daddy!

Hammy the Hamster

We now have a new family member…..no….no pregnancy…..no additional crazy kids….wishful thinking! But, we have Hammy, the Hamster!!! Elizabeth caught a lizard one day in the yard. Brian and Lizzie were so excited he proceeded to buy a cage, heat lamp and lava rock. Then, after some thought, felt more comfortable if we let the “wild” lizard go and bought a “safe” lizard from the pet shop. Well, upon arrival to buy a lizard (complete with all 3 kids), he was dismayed that the cost of the lizard was 80$. Hammy the Hamster was $9.99. The choice was simple. This poor hamster has put up with all of the kids antics and still continues to be a star. He does not bite, does not shed, his cage has only needed cleaning once in 3 months, and I have only refilled his food once too! Seriously, the perfect pet. Hammy only spends time in his cage at night. During the days, he rests in Lizzie’s hands or on another childs shoulders. He has survived dozens of falls, a mishap with a scooter, and Elizabeth’s constant attention. He also made two trips to preschool to be the “Show” of all tells!

The only excitement Hammy has caused was the day he was left unattended in Lizzie’s room (she thought he was safe). He dissappeared, we thought for good, but appeared around 2 am trying to get out of a heat vent and I happened to hear him. Let me tell you the joy that appeared on Lizzie’s face that morning (an Brian’s too as he envisioned holes found everywhere in the house).

This is a baby step towards a bigger animal….maybe a guinea pig….or a pig for the ranch grandpa?

Brian’s Pear Blossum Run

Brian all the sudden decided he was going to be a runner and run the 10 mile Pear Blossum race. I laughed at the prospects, knowing full well the last time he had attempted running was right before we got married and he wanted to get skinny before the honeymoon (which he did by the way), so that he was a handsome groom.

Anyways, he started with his initial jog being downhill to his mother’s house (.5 miles away). He jogged to her house in 15 minutes, was exhausted, and had her bring him home that first day. He proceeded to repeat this drill 3 times weekly, eventually, getting to the 1 mile distance….then 2 miles….then a long jog on the weekends of 3-5 miles. Then, low and behold, he was doing 8 mile distances.

Truth be told, I was a little stunned. The best part about it was his attitude. He was happier and felt better after jogging. The only bummer was that his knee began hurting at long distances, but that didn’t stop him.

He completed the Pear Blossum run in 1 hour 31 minutes. His overall rank was 562/987 and his division rank was 57/78.  He was smiling from ear to ear! He now has his heart set on competed in the half marathon in Bend next month. Hopefully all goes well and he is able to just do it!

Above group picture: His jogging buddies. #467 ran the boston marathon and also ran the pear blosum in 56 minutes. Brian’s next goal is 70 minutes!

Top 10 Reasons I love going to the Pear Blossum Parade

Top 10 Reasons I love going to the annual Medford Pear Blossum Parade:

10. Biggest item in parade is horses.

9. Old tractors are so cool to look at!

8. Where else do you see a float dedicated to square dancing?

7. Free candy for kids (even if it is stolen from someone elses child or taken off the ground).

6. The parade always includes some skinny dude dressed as spider man.

5. The entourage of “Mary Kay Cars” for their highest sellers.

4. $5 cotton candy, $7.50 kettle corn, $2 balloons and 4 children crying for all of it.

3. The fattest baby competition winner on display (never as big as any of my kids were).

2. 85 year old shriners driving gocarts like they are the police brigade. Oh, and don’t forget their cone hats!

1. People watching, People watching, People watching!

Grandpa Time

I took some friends to the ranch for a “farm day” experience. I was a little surprised to see Roger there. He was surprised to see 25 women and children running towards him and the ponies. He was so sweet and humored all of us with horse rides. The kids enjoyed the chickens, tractors, and cows. It was a spectacular spring morning at the ranch. I am so grateful for Roger on this day.

“Rookie” Baseball

Andrew has finally entered into the real world of baseball complete with a salute to the flag in the begginng, someone saying “Let’s Play Ball!” and oh, he will get out on strike three or tagged out on base. He is really enjoying this team and loves to get a good hit. The girls love the concession stand with its 50 cent popcorns and sodas. Ethan just chants, “Ball! Ball! Ball!” the entire time, trying to get someone to give him the ball. Andrew is actually quite the good little player and I am grateful there is live action to watch!

Preschool Kiddos

Forgive Lizzie as she wanted to show some cleavage (j/k)! My little girls are going to be leaving preschool in just a few short weeks. We go to Kindergarten Roundup next Wednesday and then they join the world of Elementary school. Ethan does not go into preschool for a couple of years so I am quite sad with this transition. The preschool has been such a fun experience for them but I have to admit, they are both ready for a change. The want to learn and get going!

Medford and Pear Blossums

Spring in Medford means lots of pear blossums. I love it as the valley is covered in a blanket of blossums. The pear fields down near delta waters almost look like they have snow on the ground once the blossums start to fall. This is the orchard next door to Roger and Rozanne’s place. It is beautiful right now. Every year Medford has a parade and festivities called the Pear Blossum Festival. This year, we were actived participants and went to the parade and Brian ran in the race.

Unfortunately, lots of pear trees are being removed in town and vineyards are popping up. Now, don’t get me wrong, I love the look of rolling hills with vineyards, very napa valley-ish, but there is nothing like Medford in the spring. Just picturesque! Pictures of my house are forthcoming as it is in full bloom right now!

Domestic Diva Day #5: Creamed Chicken

This one is a favorite in our home. It takes about 15 minutes to make if you include pasta time. We like creamed chicken with penne pasta. Others like it over toast or on rice. Regardless, Brian will eat this without complaint and it heats up easily which is nice since he sometimes doesn’t make it home in time for family dinner. This recipe can be found in the Hall Family Recipe List. Yummy!

Fluke Spring Snowstorm

This is what it looked like out my family room window last week on Friday. Crazy! The kids spent about an hour catching snowflakes on their tongue. Andrew excitedly stated, “Mom, maybe school will be cancelled Monday for a Snow Day!”  Then, I had the harsh reality of explaining what spring snow does….melt!

Growing Up

32008-spring-at-the-ranch-005.jpg

One morning while my kids were going to feed the chickens and let them out for the day, Rozanne snapped these pictures. I think they are my favorite so far this year. I loved looking at my 3 older kids chatting together and walking down the dirt road together. Once Ethan realized he wasn’t part of the party he took off running trying to catch the older kids. My kids are growing up, albeit they are still relatively little, it made me realize that I have already been married for nearly 12 years and in just 10 short years Andrew will be off to college and then a mission.

32008-spring-at-the-ranch-006.jpg

I sometimes forget the little joys of being a mother with young children. I get so wrapped up in laundry, dishes, toys pickup and the daily dish duties that I don’t smell the roses. Right now, I am going to stop writing as my little girls are sitting under my chair tickling my legs wanted me to play with them and Hammy the hamster. I got to enjoy all of this more.

Don’t Bother Me, I’m Driving a Tractor

32008-ranch-009.jpg

There was loud hysterics when I tried to pull Ethan off Grandpa’s tractor. Thank goodness Grandpa was available for a tractor ride.

Ethan Sick

32008-kids-being-kids-012.jpg

This is Ethan in his typical demeanor playing cars. He is truly a car/ball boy…oh, and cow boy.

32008-kids-being-kids-002.jpg

This is Ethan sick with a fever, listless on the couch, trying to smile for me taking his picture.

Ethan was super sick in March and I stayed home from church one Sunday with him. He was so miserable and just slept most of the day away. When he did awaken, he wanted to just lay down on the sofa. Although I love it when my kids are sick because they become cuddly (which, other than Sophie, they aren’t). But I was sure glad when he started to feel better.

Tree Work

12008-ranch-tree-removal-008.jpg12008-ranch-tree-removal-029.jpg

This past winter we had several snow storms that toppled trees at the ranch. The end result has been many hours put in primarily by Roger but also Rozanne and Brian cutting up these toppled trees into moveable pieces. This tree in particular crushed part of Rogers irrigation tubing. Even though there was some damage, I have to admit I think Roger liked the excuse to have to use the tractor.

12008-ranch-tree-removal-039.jpg12008-ranch-tree-removal-049.jpg

Our family went out to take a look at the project and got some complementary tractor rides. Here are my blondies!

12008-ranch-tree-removal-051.jpg12008-ranch-tree-removal-053.jpg

This past week on Thursday I had a group of friends out to the ranch to see the cows, chickens, and horses. It was Rogers first day off and he had mowed all of the grasses and was working on a section by the barn when we arrived. He was wonderful and made my day by saddling up Splash and taking all 16 kids for pony rides. Roger you are my hero! Everyone had a blast and loved the baby cows, held chickens and played with the horses. Right now with the spring weather and lush green grass it is just about as close to heaven as you can get out at the ranch. Pictures are forthcoming!

Spring in the Redwood Forest

32008-redword-forrest-with-andrew-and-michelle-020.jpg

When my sister Michelle and her fiance Andrew were in town we went to the coast/redwood forrest. I don’t have any pictures at the coast but I did snap a few in the forrest. The kids love going to Stout Grove which has a .2 mile walking loop complete with lots of redwood trees to climb on.

32008-redword-forrest-with-andrew-and-michelle-019.jpg32008-redword-forrest-with-andrew-and-michelle-014.jpg

Both Andrews could be found climbing, sitting, or swinging from the trees. I love all the ferns and clover.

32008-redword-forrest-with-andrew-and-michelle-041.jpg

We took this picture by one of the trees and of course, where else should the 17 month toddler be but on top of a ledge with his 7 year old brother. And this picture isn’t complete without the sad explanation that I fell on my butt after the picture was snapped!

32008-redword-forrest-with-andrew-and-michelle-013.jpg

Brian and Roger, who came with us), walked the lap in 5 minutes and then proceeded to wait for us by the car for 45 minutes. Silly Hall men!

Easter Morning

32008-easter-morning-004.jpg32008-easter-morning-014.jpg

Easter this year was not as exciting for my kids as usual. I…er…the Easter Bunny didn’t hide the eggs hard enough (although a few have been found in the last week). The Easter Bunny even left a note complete with a clue for the kids to help them find their baskets and Andrew basically solved each riddle. Nana was given strict orders by the Easter Bunny to not gorge herself on jelly beans and, much to her dismay, she couldn’t help herself. Grandpa and Dad didn’t make it to  most of the morning festivities, claiming sleep was more important.

32008-easter-morning-015.jpg32008-easter-morning-018.jpg

I did do one brilliant thing this year that will become a tradition: I did not buy easter grass for my baskets and yep, that made my cleaning a whole lot easier. The kids were even good with their wrappers. The easter bunny left them a toy-a squirt gun and yep, even that is not messy as water evaporates!

32008-easter-morning-020.jpg32008-easter-morning-008.jpg

All I can say is the Easter Bomb will be going off at my mom’s house in just a little over a week and then….party/candy time!

Easter Egg Hunt at the Eagars

Traditionally, we go to an Easter egg hunt at our good friends the Degraw’s every year. This year, the hunt ended up being on the day we were at the coast with my sister and her fiance. That left a hunt for the medical alliance we belong to here in town but we ended up getting rained out at that event. The kids were dissappointed that we were not going to go to an Easter egg hunt this year and I comforted them with the knowledge that Grammie Martin in Utah was going to have an Easter egg hunt for them. Then, friday night of Easter weekend I got a phone call from my mother-in-law’s good friend Debbie Eagar. She invited us to her home for an Easter egg hunt and barbeque. The weather cooperated and the kids had a ball. Even Ethan figured out the benefits of collecting eggs.

32008-eager-easter-egg-hunt-003.jpg32008-eager-easter-egg-hunt-005.jpg32008-eager-easter-egg-hunt-015.jpg32008-eager-easter-egg-hunt-017.jpg32008-easter-egg-hunt-026.jpg

The kids all got a ton of candy and they all had happy faces!

Easter Egg Decorating

32008-eager-egg-decorating-008.jpg32008-easter-egg-decorating-008.jpg

With Easter being so early this year both Brian and I were not prepared. He had scheduled a scout campout up in the woods Easter weekend. We traditionally have the Easter bunny come on Saturday, but dad was not going to be home that day. So, instead we decorated eggs on Saturday morning. Andrew was very excited and artistic in his egg creations. Lizzie and Sophie were not very interested after the 3rd egg. Ethan was totally into making a mess, not so much into decorating. I had bought 36 eggs thinking that was not enough. It was enough. Although they were not into decorating they were into eating the eggs and hard boiled egg shells were everywhere for a solid week.

32008-easter-egg-decorating-006.jpg32008-easter-egg-decorating-004.jpg

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

32008-redword-forrest-with-andrew-and-michelle-027.jpg32008-redword-forrest-with-andrew-and-michelle-023.jpg32008-redword-forrest-with-andrew-and-michelle-021.jpg

Yeah, I know, St. Patrick’s Day was a month ago. But, the truth of the matter was the weekend before St. Patty’s I was in the Redwood Forests enjoying the lush greener when we came across several huge groves of large clover. The kids and I hunted for a four leaf clover so that all our dreams could come true (Theres-new parents, Ours-new kids) but alas, it was not to be. We all ended up driving home together…in the same minivan of chaos…listening to crying, giggling, teasing, tantrums…and yep, we get to drive to Utah in 2 weeks. Anyone want to join us?

My Mama Said…

122007-north-carolina-visit-014.jpg

Never each anything bigger than your HEAD (even if it is an Idaho Potato)!

Sorry, I can’t help myself. I have been looking at a lot of Rozanne’s pictures lately on my computer and just had to post this.

Impression of Ahhhhnold!

32008-kids-being-kids-014.jpg

“Hey Ethan, FLEX! STIFFIES!”

Yeah…..ripling with muscles!

Jack & Jill

Jack & Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water

Jack fell down and broke his crown

And Jill came tumbling after…

I have always had a soft spot for this nursery rhyme since my name is in it and it is a rite of passage to memorize it in your childhood. Never did I realize it would have “real world” application.

This is Jack & Jill, Roger’s latest arrivals at the ranch-Baby Holstein Cows. (Jack has more black on his face, Jill….well she is just so darn perfect!)

32008-grandpas-new-cows-010.jpg

Each spring brings with it a new animal introduction and this year it was Grandpa that picked his latest pet. Last year… it was ducks (thanks Steven), previous year, chickens (thanks again Steven), and then horses (thanks Brian).

32008-new-cow-arrivals-037.jpg32008-new-cow-arrivals-008.jpg

It was pretty obvious from the moment they arrived that Roger was in love.

Now, we have the twice daily task of bottle (er…pail with nipple) feeding these cows. Fortunately they came complete with sucking capabilities so they do quite well with the nipple. First you mix the formula (similar to human formula but a gallon per feed per cow). Then comes the hard part, luring one out of the stall at a time to feed them. They no longer can be together at the same feeding because they fight for the food. Roger or Brian handle this with ease every evening on their own (primarily Roger [with his sidekick Sophie]).

32008-new-cow-arrivals-020.jpg32008-grandpas-new-cows-006.jpg32008-new-cow-arrivals-079.jpg

But Rozanne and I go together in force each weekday morning to give hay to the horses, water/feed the chickens, let the chickens out for the day, and then, to corner each calf  to feed it and then help it chew oats.

32008-spring-at-the-ranch-001.jpg32008-new-cow-arrivals-071.jpg32008-grandpas-new-cows-014.jpg

Here is the rhymes poetic application. Now it isn’t Jack or for that matter Jill who falls down, it is usually the pail due to high force bucking from Jack or Jill.  Without fail it is I or Rozanne that get splashed, no…doused with milk due to the strong instict these cows have to lunge forward at us while we feed them. The milk guzzles out of the nipple at warp speed but still not fast enough for them. Therefore, you must hold tightly to the pail and anchor yourself. Fortunately, the milk smells divine so you aren’t so sad, but you definitely don’t go in their regular clothing for the day. I am always in my sweat pajamas. Ah..then, we get back in the car, shoes covered in cow manure, milk all over your clothes, also hay from the feed or chick wood shavings from their home, and call it a morning. Then you start your regular morning. Such fun!

Dear Mom,

You know in Young Women’s when they have you write down your life’s goals and aspirations, what you desire in a husband, where/how you want to live, and how many kids you want to have and the crazy teenage names you will name them? Remember, I was going to marry a tall, dark and handsome, have a 6 children, one named Chandler, live in suburban Orem, and live life happily ever after after as a registered nurse working in the operating room… It’s a good thing some dreams don’t come true!

 Love,

JILL

Pedicures

32008-pedicures-with-michelle-and-tina-002.jpg

When I moved here I promised my sisters if they would come visit I would pay for a pedicure each time they came. This trip was no different and we were totally pampered. There was lots of giggling, massaging chairs, massaged feet, cute flowers painted on our big toes, pure delight! Now….to hide that credit card bill from Brian…

Lithia Park

Lithia Park in the springtime doesn’t get much more beautiful. I wish I could explain in greater detail how flourescent all of the colors are. My sister Michelle and her fiance Andrew graced us with their presence a couple of weeks ago. My younger (twin) sister Christina also manipulated her college coursework to come for the 5 day break and we had a ball!

32008-lithia-park-with-andrew-and-michelle-010.jpg

Single and Sexy! Any takers?

32008-lithia-park-with-andrew-and-michelle-006.jpg Taken off the market! Marriage May 2nd!

While Andrew was at school we took the younger three and explored Lithia park. The girls loved the little water features, the playground, the endless hikes, and critters encountered.

32008-lithia-park-with-andrew-and-michelle-004.jpg32008-lithia-park-with-andrew-and-michelle-038.jpg32008-lithia-park-with-andrew-and-michelle-037.jpg

I took attempts at being a professional photographer for their engagement pictures (j/k). I just happened to get some great photos of them.

32008-lithia-park-with-andrew-and-michelle-036.jpg

I keep thinking about how our family has changed in the past 3 years, 4 new in-laws, a new grandbaby on the way, a move to Oregon, etc. The  thing is, it hasn’t changed my wonderful relationship with my siblings. We still all love each other and wish we saw more of each other. I look forward to more Martin partying in May at the wedding and many more sibling treks to Oregon to hang out with their elder sister.

Domestic Diva Day #4

22008-ethan-is-in-charge-of-dishes-003.jpg22008-ethan-is-in-charge-of-dishes-001.jpg

With the kids helping with all my recent cooking escapades….Ethan feels cheated. Hence, here is Ethan’s contribution-DISHES!

Sshhh! Don’t tell Brian how warped the floorboard looks below the sink. Minor water damage is a good thing when it leads to a happy child!

Domestic Diva Day #3

22008-homemade-scone-day-001.jpg

Another dessert post….see the trend. This time Brian and I decided to make a dessert we both had as kids, Cinnamon Sugar Scones (Empanadas). Nothing like biscuit dough covered/cooked in oil, smothered in cinnamon and sugar…..mmmm…

Domestic Diva Day #2

12008-superbowl-cinnamon-twists-004.jpg12008-superbowl-cinnamon-twists-002.jpg12008-superbowl-cinnamon-twists-001.jpg

The kids and I decided to make a fun dessert one Sunday recently. I wanted to make something completely different then the brownies I traditionally make. So, I started to think about my favorite desserts in this world and one of them is a Cinnamon Twist that my friend Linda makes. My mouth even now is salivating even thinking about it. Now, being Sunday, I felt sheepish about calling Linda to get the recipe so we looked through our cookbooks and found one that looked quite similar. Although I neglected to take the after pictures because we started eating things so quickly, just take my word for it that this dessert was devine! And, the best part about it, was that I really did let my kids do all of it from start to finish. YUMMY!

Domestic Diva Day #1

I am trying to be more domesticated each day and have really been trying hard to follow my new years resolution to have more fun with my kids and cook more. Believe it or not it has actually been quite fun. And, just when I was starting to explore where I should get more recipes, in the mail, pops a wonderful cook book from Sarah. She is such a stud. Made my day. I mean who has a husband’s cousin that would send her 1st cousin’s wife a cool package complete with real life mardi gras beads (big hit with the kids). So, more on those recipes coming up! But, I am having more fun with my kids and even today climbed into my bed after lunch with my two little girls and watched the first hour of the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice. Pure delight (don’t be jealous Sarah, I am sure you have a half dozen girls of your own heading your way)! And, as evidenced by the pictures above, made my own homemade play-doh and Lizzie and Andrew are showing you their octopus creations.

Filling Big Shoes

This is Ethan in his cool Thomas the Train pj’s with a ball in his hand and my jogging shoes on.  He loves his shoes and knows if he has his shoes on he can go outside. This day he couldn’t find his own shoes so he put mine on instead.

Happy Days!

This is my little bundle of joy.

My Favorite Cowboy

There is this little boy in our neighborhood whom I absolutely adore. His name is Adam and he loves to play dressup just like my kids. Each day he comes down from his bedroom clad in some different costumed character that he plans on being for the day. Most often, he is a cowboy. One day, he and his mother came to pick up my girls for a play date. He came complete with his horse, boots and loving hat. He told to girls to saddle up. Lizzie rolled her eyes and hissed at him. Sophie gladly put on her cowboy boots and then the two of them trotted up the hill to his home-THE ENTIRE WAY! I just love Adam and hope he continues to “date” my girls. Who knows, tomorrow they might be going to outer space or they might be on his tricycle batmobile fighting bad guys!

Hot Tub Time!

12008-family-time-002.jpg

One day last month when the kids didn’t have school we went to my friend Janet’s home for a little lunch and visiting. The visit was not considered complete until the kids had been in the hot tub. They loved it and then proceeded to get out and run around in the back yard soaking wet. The temperature could not have been higher than 50 degrees but that didn’t seem to bother them.  I put Ethan in his swimming suit and proceeded to take him out to the tub when a cool wind hit his naked tummy and he freaked out he was so cold. No amount of encouragement was going to get him to go in the hot tub. He is a little scared of water. I am grateful. I hope it lasts all summer. Nothing scares me more than swimming pools and kids. I am sure lucky to have sisters willing to come for part of the summer to help chaperone the kids in the pool. I hope the gravy train continues at least one more year.

My Boys

That Y chromosomes in this family have a  pretty strong bond. They seem to be magnates to one another. I think they feel like although the ratio of boys to girls is identical, that estrogen runs the house. And based on the emotions exhibited by us girls, they are probably right. Ethan won’t have a thing to do with me when Brian enters the door. It is an absolute sob fest when Brian leaves for work each morning. You would think based on his dramatics that he was being left to be tortured by mama Hall. Andrew on the other hand, is starting to pick up on little things Brian will say to me in jest and repeats them like a parrot. For some reason when a 7 year old says the word “crap” it is sure funny. Regardless, they are sure good boys.

The Joy of Flowers

12008-jills-amaryllis-005.jpg

The pictures I took of this Amaryllis do not do it justice. It was absolutely gorgeous. My friend Lisa gave this flower to our family and much to our delight we watched as the leaves and bloom emerged from the bulb. Then, we were excited to see a second bloom emerge. I kept it right behind my sink and loved watching its new growth each day. To have two blooms was pretty exciting too. My mother in law always gives us in the fall a glass container with Paper White bulbs all ready to go and the girls and I have always loved watching them grow too. There is nothing like a little bundle or pot or glass with flowers in it to make your day. Brian actually got me a beautiful vase with fresh flowers in it for Valentines. It was so needed especially that week and I have truly enjoyed it as I pass by it going to and fro in my home. I have been trying to decide which flowers I love best. For indoors, I truly enjoy a mix of flowers. Outdoors, I love pansies for the fact that they are so hardy and add color for such a long duration. I really do enjoy paper whites and a good amaryllis. They too are enjoyable because you watch their growth. Is there anyone who doesn’t like a flower? I would guess if you have XX chromosomes you just love them.

Surprise Snow in Medford

When Medford gets snow it is quite the shocker to the city. Even if it is just a trace amount it disrupts everyday life here. For example, 1 inch fell overnight and they cancelled school in January, primarily because busses cannot get up into our neighborhoods to get kids because it is too slick. Well, you should have seen the shock Medford got when on a Sunday they received 8 inches of snow within 6 hours. I felt like I was back in good old Utah! This occured while we were at church and they sent us home early. We couldn’t get our minivan home and so we parked at the base of our neighbor hood and hiked home each with a child on our back (Brian had two). But my how pretty it was while it lasted (all of 3 days before completely melted)

I took thte liberty of shoveling our sidewalks which I have always enjoyed. Nobody else did this as they knew it would melt by the next day (which it did) but no one fell down at our house.

Andrew went sledding down the street. This was super fun!

Ethan just had to be out in the mix of it all and he sat content in a chair all bundled up.

Lizzie enjoyed helping me with the snow (note the fact she has her red cowboy boots on and pj’s).

Sophie just wanted to be dragged around on a sled (note she was using rain boots along with Andrew as their mode of warmth).

The next day Andrew attempted to build a snowman but the snow was so heavy it ended up being a snow fort where we had some great snowball battles. Not how clear the roads are just 24 hours later.

It was sure nice for the kids to play in and would you believe that we were at the park 2 weeks later?

Love the Medford weather.

Lizzie turns 5!

1222008-elizabeth-5th-birthday-011.jpg

Elizabeth is now officially 5 years old. She had her 5 year old shots. She gets to go to kindergarten. She thinks she is just a few years from driving (this is an 11 year stretch). She is now many more years older and wiser, or at least a know-it-all.

1222008-elizabeth-5th-birthday-001.jpg

She is so darn cute and we are just a few years from teenagedom (I am declaring this a word). She had a wonderful party complete with….of course….a pinata and lots of candies to decorate cupcakes with. She was very happy. The only problem, we forgot to sing “Happy Birthday” much to her dismay and so Nana and I gave a duet performance to her after her party was over, which she said was “ok.” We aren’t winning any Tony’s anytime soon. Elizabeth may win one soon though with the exaggerated performance of a tear-fest at the end of her party. This occured when she realized another child had accidentally taken her pinata candy bag and no amount of make-up candy would fix this disaster. Nana saved the day with an emergency trip to Dollar Tree where she was able to get the candies of her choice. What would we do without Nana, Dollar Tree and TJ Max?

I love you Elizabeth.
