Between and New Roof and New Driveway in 3 weeks my house was covered in a fine layer of dusty dirt. It was a real issue for me to tolerate.
First we hired Caesar to tear out our deck and take it to the dump.
Then Old timers Construction, Spence's cousin Joe Christensen, came in for the big concrete remodel! They dug out the dirt out back by hand, and chiseled out all the concrete and framed the back in 2 days.
Then a big cement truck drove past the house to pour! They had to cut a branch off our tree and tie another one back. It was quite the effort.
The front half was to be poured the following day, Friday, but we decided to have the city come replace our irrigation valve since the area was already dug. The city quickly came and replaced it for a nice fee. We survived the weekend with the big steel bars sticking out without any children impaling themselves.
Monday the concrete was poured first thing in the morning. Joe said the concrete would be ready for hand prints by lunch. I may be a bit sentimental, but I pulled the kids out of school at lunch for them to eat some Wendy's fast food and get dirty!
I started with Cooper on the left there. As I was pressing his hands in to the REALLY hard cement, Maggie went running by! Oh I was irate, grabbing her and sadly telling Joe she had ruined the already nice area he had smoothed. He laughed and said we should keep it! He smoothed out her little feet prints from the outer areas and kept the 4 on the square we were using. Savannah was next, then Maddux. The cement was so hard that both Savy and Maddux cried that it hurt. I guess Maggie's little feet was a great plan as I would not have been able to crush her little fingers in quite right.
Now that we had a gorgeous patio, we needed to decide to cover the window with another deck/stairs leaving the kitchen, or leave it open. I decided to take apart the sliding glass door and swap the direction the door opened so we would exit on the left and leave the window clear for my children to play in natural light. It makes a world of difference for our basement to have light.
(And now a month later a custom metal grate over the play room window is in place and a trex deck is nearly finished! Nov 5)
The before and afters. Sorry they are all crooked, I am done trying to make it work!
