The year in limericks

Spence started two thousand eleven
With three weeks of winter break heaven
Then he went back to class
                And busted his *ss
Learning terms like escheat and replevin

Aly’s office is where you should be
For advice on a post grad degree
Call and you’ll hear her voice
                No matter your choice
J.D., D.D.S., or M.D.

This year we got Spence a new cell
His phone worked but was beaten to h*ll
It’d been through the wash twice
                But recovered in rice
Since ’06 it has served him so well

Spence went to the coast with John Giles
To swim, bike, and run a few miles
He threw up in the bay
                But finished ok
Thanks to John’s help, and Aly’s, and Kyle’s

In May Spenny hung up his Brooks
And went back to hitting the books
                Exams made him sob
                Then he took a job
Helping prosecute gang-banging crooks

In June Matt gave Moses a ring
We flew in to see the whole thing
                ‘Twas unseason’bly cold
                And we loved to hold
Sweet Sofie and Lucy and King

Mandy’s man had a certain mystique
He loved unicorns but wasn’t a geek
                Their wedding was hot
                And we ate a lot
Of food with the theme "backyard chic"

In the summer we tried to keep cool
Amy taught kids to swim at her pool
                Thomas worked through the night
Made the subs get it right
Aly got students into med school

Went to Flagstaff with Kyle and Ash
At the market we spent all our cash
                We bought a few pickles
                And stayed at the Nichols’
Went offroading and tried not to crash

Morning sickness began to annoy
Then we learned of our bundle of joy
                Didn’t think of girl names
                We’d settled on James
Long before we knew he was a boy

Thanksgiving began with a race
A human-sized turkey to chase
                The turkey Matt beat
                And we did retreat
Home to stuff everyone’s face

Spence ended two thousand eleven
In a tense ping pong showdown with Devin
                He’d flown home to DC
                Yes, Liza’s wedding to see
But mostly for one best-of-seven

The year’s over, and so is this song
We hope that it wasn’t too long
They say next year’s our last
So let’s make it a blast
And hope that those Maya were wrong!

Happy 2012!

Spence is 26!

Spence had a great birthday this year! As you can see in the pictures, we went to a Dbacks game, had a big pool party with 18 of our friends (where Spence did awesome on the grill), had some chicken pillows and rice-a-roni for Sunday dinner per his request, ate lots of leftover wedding/birthday cake, enjoyed breakfast in bed, had carne asada for lunch, and answered lots of sweet phone calls from loved ones! The last pic of the truck is just one of Spence's favorites. haha.

I love you Spenny! I am so glad you were born.

p.s. three blog posts this month!? Another point for the iphone.

Summer Shenanigans

We love the summer! We both decided the heat really isn't that bad and I think Spence is becoming a true desert rat! We spend all our time in air conditioned gyms, offices, homes, stores and cars so it is totally manageable. If we have to be outside, we try to be in the pool or shade! We actually had a delightful pool party for Spence's birthday outside (with misters on the patio) and it was so fun.

I was planning on doing a great recap of the summer but my sister Amy and her husband Thomas have basically been hanging out with us the whole time, so I will direct you to her awesome blog here.

There are a few noteworthy things that are not on Amy's blog though.

1) I got an iPhone! I have been wanting one for literally years and with my discount from working at ASU and my phone being eligible for an upgrade...I am now the proud owner of a white iPhone 4! I really don't know how I lived without it and it is totally worth the money in my opinion. Go get one if you're thinking about it!

2) We were in the right place at the right time (actually we were running out the door late to the Meldau's Friends and Family Fiesta..) and scored beautiful nail-head couches from our neighbors at an awesome price! It pays to live by ASU kids who have extra fancy furniture from their parents just chilling in the lawn because they don't need them. It almost makes up for their occasional drunken 4 am parties!

Below are a few iPhone pics to show what else we have been up to (including one of the new couches)!

Two for two

So every year Dawn plans a wedding and goes to the hospital*. 50 % is in the bag! Mandy's wedding is next Saturday, so she is almost there!

But really, what would we do without my mom? She is awesome and has had such a crazy life this summer. Who else do you know that is planning a wedding, opening her house up to (almost) three married couples all the time, taking care of a sweet but needy seven year old and a needy 15 year old, serving as a Ma on the trek, planning everyone's lives, vacations, moves, jobs (Amy is teaching swimming lessons at her house) and then managing to still take dinner to her friend in need! Just thinking about it makes me tired. Thanks Mom, we love you!!

*P.S. Dawn was in a bike accident a few weeks ago, she is fine now.
* the extra pic shows her a few days later holding her bloody helmet! crazy huh.

sweet baby james

I have always loved James Taylor. I have fond memories of listening to him on road trips and during the holidays with my family way back in the day (and now). I have listened to this one below on repeat for about three weeks so I decided it was time to share!

James starts singing "Sweet Baby James" around 4:00 and it is just magical. I am 90% sure I will name my first born son James because of him. Seriously.
