Mmmmmmarshmallows....

Christmas morning, eating candy from their stockings.

Translation: I love marshmallows ;)

Hello, blog

How have you been? It's been ages. I feel like I don't even know you anymore!

Anyway, I've moved from that place of having nothing to blog, to having so much that I don't know where to start. So, here goes.

Christmas. This year was one of our best ever, mostly because we were able to stay home all day! Of course we did my sister's house on Christmas Eve and my mom's house the following Sunday, but on Christmas day we were able to have a super relaxed and lazy morning at home, and then have Nathan's side of the family over in the evening.

The super hero pose, again.

Noah has slept with that Lightning McQueen pillow every night since, just like I knew he would.

Anna wanted to save every name tag from her gifts. She opened some of them super slowly so she wouldn't rip the tag.

She was pretty excited to get this mermaid bath slide toy. She was with me when I bought it, but I told her that it might be for the charity toy drive at church. She was very happy to see that it was for her.

A handmade dolly, named Jane, like everything else Anna owns right now :)

What could be better? A big car to hold all of your small cars!

A very small part of the aftermath. Noah is shoving a marshmallow snowman into his mouth.

Overall it was a great day. We went to church on Christmas Eve, and we weren't expecting guests until the late afternoon, so we stayed in our pjs for half the day! I loved that the kids were able to play with their toys and relax without having to rush off to someone else's house.

A Weekend with Spot

Last Friday when Anna climbed into the car at carpool, her teacher slid a large orange bag with an owl on it into the back seat too. When we pulled away I asked Anna what was in the bag and her entire body shook with excitement as she yelled out, "IT'S SPOT!".

Spot is the class owl, and every student gets to have him for a weekend. In the bag was Spot, and a stuffed 3 ring binder where every family before us has documented their adventures with Spot. It was fun to look at. Some families just had the child draw a picture of Spot, while other families did full on scrapbook layouts. I admit I was closer to that end of the spectrum. ;)

As soon as we got home Anna wanted me to take a picture of her feeding yogurt to Spot. Careful!

Then of course Spot flew into the Christmas tree. Noah's giraffe felt left out so he jumped in there too.

The next morning Ruby had a vet appointment, so we took Spot along for his own check-up. Our vet was a really good sport and spent a long time examining Spot and showing Anna how to use all of his tools.

For dinner Spot helped us make a chicken pot pie. You can see here that he was amazed by the whole process. Just look at that focus.

Anna fed him a dough "worm".

Later we all snuggled up on the couch with some popcorn to watch Polar Express. Yes Anna is wearing a sundress in December. Don't worry. It was one of 43 wardrobe changes that day, so she didn't even have time to get cold.

Hey, whoooooo is in my bed?!

Anna's teachers loved these pictures. They said, "That white bed, those ballerina sheets, it's just how we knew it would be for Anna!".

We had a lot of fun with Spot! This year seems to be going so fast and I know I still have Noah's preschool years ahead of me, but I'm getting sad that Anna's are almost over. I love preschool and all of the fun and creative things they do.

Anna

Today Anna had preschool, like she does every Friday. The library had called to tell me a book I requested was ready, so instead of going home or running other errands, Noah and I went to the library across the street from Anna's school. When we got to the children's department it was unusually crowded, and I soon figured out that a preschool class from another school was there. Noah wanted to play blocks so we sat down in the middle of the group and started to play, and a group of 3 or 4 little girls watched him with great interest. Especially when he would knock down the towers he had built! As I watched these little girls talk and play, I started seeing Anna in their features. One had sort of wavy, sort of straight hair that was Anna's color. One had straight little stick legs and tights like Anna's, and as they got up to leave a teacher called one of them by name, Anna.

Preschool days are short, less than 3 hours between drop off and pick up, and normally I don't even have time to miss her before she's back. But today when I looked at those girls, I missed Anna terribly. I found myself thinking that if something ever happened to her I know I would spend the rest of my life looking for glimpses of her in every child I see. It was so overwhelming it was all I could do not to drive across the street and take her out of school early! But of course I knew she was fine and she was having fun, and pickup was less than an hour away. And Noah wanted to go see the hamsters at the library, and to walk in the leaves outside, to have a snack. So off we went.

After school we all played lots of pretend games, including the Anna Express Train (chairs lined up in the kitchen) which was taking us to "Chinese Africa". Anna told me that when we arrived my job would be warning all African animals to stay off of the tracks. I love her little mind and the things she comes up with. I love her creativity, her drive to know more and more and more. But most of all I love her sweet spirit and how she just dives into everything she does. I can NOT wait to see what this girl does as she grows, although tonight I think I'd like her to stay 4 forever.

Still here

We're still alive, just busy! We've been doing preschool events, going to and planning lots of fun birthday and holiday parties, doing fun everyday stuff like grocery shopping and cleaning, and Nathan and I have been touring and talking to what feels like a million Kindergartens trying to decide on one for Anna. Sorry the blog is so empty lately!

Dear Amy,

So, you already know what Anna wants you to get her for Christmas, but she wanted to make sure there was no doubt.

p.s. To any crazy person who thinks they will make all of Anna's dreams come true and buy her a cat for Christmas, you can't. Nathan and I are both allergic.....plus cats are evil. ;)

p.p.s. Anna does not sleep in that crib! She was playing in Noah's bed.

She also says...

I thought of a few more things Anna has been saying lately. I have to write them down or I know I will forget!

Trees make sack. Not sap!

Candles are made of whack.

A group of birds is called a flocket.

Oh how I love this age!

Well, it's happening again. We're so busy that I keep making mental notes of cute things the kids have said and then I forget all about them before I can write them down. Here are the few that I can remember.

On the way home from preschool a while back Anna told me, "Mommy, when I lived in your tummy I used to chew on your bones".

This past week I got my first spontaneous, "Mommy? I love you" from Noah. When I responded, "I love you too, baby!", he said, "Yeah, I love you mommy. But I not a baby! And you old". Thanks a lot, buddy.

Today in the mall Anna saw an older lady with short, curly, white hair. As we passed her Anna said, "Wow, I sure do love your white fluffy hair!". The lady just smiled. I'm not sure she even heard Anna, but I thought it was cute.

Noah is so goofy lately. I love to hear him pretend, and his pretend play almost always includes someone getting to eat ice cream. Today in the car he put his socks on his hands and told me, "It's not socks! It's blueberry ice cream scoops!". There's something magical about his socks. Last week he put them on his hands in preschool carpool, and when Anna's teacher opened the door he showed them to her and yelled repeatedly, "I a space man! I a space man!".

Love these kids!

My friend Julie just sent me these pictures from our October get together with our small group from church. We let all of the kids wear their costumes and they were so excited. These crack me up!

L to R: Anna (funny face) Jack, Emma, Leigh, Noah, twins Kate and Claire in the bumbo seats, and baby Olivia on the blanket. The kids in the back row are all 2-4 years old, the twins are 6 months old, and little Olivia is only 8 weeks old.

Poor little bumblebee!

After standing still for pictures they needed to let out a little energy on Jack's bed. That bed will look familiar in a few weeks. It's the same one we just bought for Noah's big boy room.

Just last week Leigh's parents welcomed their new baby Kara. When we first started our group had 5 kids and in just one year we're up to 9! I love how they all play and have so much fun together, even if Jack and Noah are getting a bit outnumbered!

Sleeping Beauty

Sometimes Nathan likes to sneak in and take a few pictures of the kids after they fall asleep. They look so peaceful and so sweet when they're sleeping. Plus it's the only time you can get them to stand still! Ashley, Anna has adopted one of the dogs as her own!

I love this picture, because it is a perfect snap shot of Anna's life right now. We let her sleep in her costume. I know, I know. But it's basically a nightgown anyway, it just has sequins! So she's a mermaid sleeping on her ballerina sheets. And hanging behind her on the wall is her preschool class morning message. This is the little paper they have every morning at the start of circle time, when they go over the date, the weather, and what the day's craft will be. They also have the kids circle sight words. I love how the teachers draw themselves above their names! They let every student take the paper home a few times per year and this was Anna's first. She immediately wanted it hung up in her room, and she loves pretending to lead me through morning message.

Noah sleeping style isn't so much Sleeping Beauty as it is runrunrun until you just pass out. ;)

He's such a sweetie though. For the last two days he has been asking for a baby brother, completely unprovoked! Last night he even made two play doh penguins and insisted they stay side by side because they were "Bwothers".

Preschool Pumpkin

So what if Halloween was last week? We can still carve our pumpkin, right?! Nathan and I like them better uncarved, but the kids were so excited to do it so we went ahead.

Ewww, not so excited about this part.

We let Anna draw on the face.

I carved it exactly like she had drawn it. Nathan made fun of my carving skills, but I think it's the perfect preschool pumpkin! Speaking of preschool, I had Anna's parent teacher conference this morning and once again I heard a glowing review. They told me Anna was well behaved, very smart, and a born leader. They didn't have to convince me! :)

It works!

This week I read on two different blogs that there was something going on with the Autumn Equinox and gravity and who knows what, that made it possible for you to stand a broom up in your house with nothing supporting it. I tried it, and after a few minutes of thinking it wouldn't work, it did! It stood there for a long time. I even went to the store and came back and it was still standing...until Noah saw it of course.

Anna thought it was super exciting. Here she is putting the hocus pocus on it. And yes, she's wearing her mermaid costume. It pretty much hasn't left her body since Halloween night!

A Fine Day

Today has just been great. I didn't think it would be when I woke up. Noah did something to my alarm clock last night and it did not go off this morning. I woke up an hour and 15 minutes later than I planned to, which gave me all of 45 minutes to shower and dress myself, wake and feed the kids, dress them, and get Anna into her Halloween costume, complete with fancy curled hair that I had promised the night before. I actually got all of that accomplished, even if it did mean I had to take her to school with wet hair. Thank goodness for carpool!

After a trip back home to make myself presentable Noah and I turned around and went back to preschool for the class Halloween party. Anna was super excited to see both of us there, and I think she was even more excited by the cupcakes, crafts, dancing, stories, and the slightly dangerous game of pumpkin bowling played by the whole class. We had a great time, and Noah couldn't have been more well behaved, sitting on the floor making very detailed lines of wooden play people.

After preschool we headed to the park for the first preschool class playdate of the year. It was supposed to rain all afternoon but it was sunny and bright and warm. It was perfect and the kids had a blast. I was able to talk to two sets of parents whose older kids attend two of the schools we're interested in, so that was fun for me. Always good to get that inside info ;)

After everyone left the kids and I stayed for a walk and a visit with the ducks. It was well past nap time, but the great weather combined with the gorgeous leaves just made getting back in the car really unappealing. Noah was feeding bread to the ducks and when I looked away he said a duck bit him! Not sure if it really did or if it just scared him by getting too close, but we decided to head home after that.

Both kids are taking late naps right now and I think we're heading back to the park this evening since Nathan is coming home a bit early. Tonight I have to plan out my Halloween feast, especially since my sister says I, "better make it festive".

Oh, and in case you haven't guessed, I forgot my camera today and didn't get even one picture of all the cuteness! But we'll make up for that this weekend I'm sure.

Fancy Dancing

Today Anna was allowed to wear her Halloween costume to ballet school. She was super excited and when we got there all of the little girls stood on the sidewalk comparing costumes before we walked inside. Here she is with her friends Macey and Anna.

I told her that she may need to hike up her mermaid tail to dance, hee hee. Her sweet teacher is almost 9 months pregnant!

All the fancy girls.

On an unrelated note, I can NOT get over the color this fall! Was it this gorgeous last year? Maybe it's just because we're in a new neighborhood, but the trees are just amazing. This is what I look at while I type, but of course the picture doesn't even begin to do it justice. Some of the oranges and reds around our house are crazy. Love it :)

Hope everyone has a fun and safe Halloween. We have 5 fun events to go to in the next 3 days!

In the city

Last weekend we went to the big information fair for our local public schools. Anna was excited to be downtown, but she did not like the cold wind!

Running always helps you warm up though!

Afterward, we had lunch and Noah needed a snuggle.

She was so excited to wear her mittens.

I caught them holding hands in the backseat. :)

Okay mom, that's enough.
