Friday Favorites already!

On Wednesday this week was dragging by, but somehow we made it to Friday. Hooray! I meant to visit this place all week but here we are again with some favorites.

1. Goodbye Summer Hair

Yeah, I'm posting this on the internet. This is my hair in the warmer months when I just blow dry it wild without trying to tame it in any way. I sent this picture to my sister and she said I should bead it like Monica did on Friends. Sometimes it's so big that I have to show Nathan (you can imagine how much he loves this). I walked into the hall and Kate literally jumped in fear and said, "Oh mom! You scare me! You hair is crazy!". This is why it must be forced into submission each day. Fall makes that process much easier...unless it's raining. Then I'm back to looking like Dora.

2. Their Enthusiasm for Fall

These kids are SO excited that Fall has finally arrived. The grocery store in our neighborhood has buy one get one free pumpkins, so even though it's early in the season we couldn't resist tossing two into our cart on the way in. I love Ben's peace signs. I love Anna carrying Kate and Noah pushing the cart for me. And I love Kate's squeals in the car as we pass houses decorated for Halloween. This morning she yelled out, "Oh er'body have punkins and ghost-es!". We ordered all of our costumes yesterday and they are counting the days.

And look at the Fall cuteness my sweet mother in law dropped off this week! She makes these and they sell them with their other plants at a local farmers market.

3. These Studious Girls

This girl is a sponge for learning. She wants to do school constantly. So much so that I've actually run out of things for her to do some days. When I'm really busy with school for Ben she will come in and poke around for something of her own. If I don't have something ready for her she will dig out these workbooks and start tracing letters and numbers. But this week I noticed she was writing her own letters next to the printed ones. She also wrote the numbers 1-10 by herself this week, and they were extra swirly and fancy. ;)

I always love this sight. She reads like there's no tomorrow. Yesterday I caught her trying to read lines from her library book in between writing answers in her homework books! I had to put an end to that but inside I was smiling because I remember being the same way. We try to get to homework pretty soon when we get home from school, but a snack and just one chapter helps her brain get ready to jump back into things.

Not related, but hilarious - Found this in one of her school books this week.

4. This Teddy Bear

We gave Kate two little buns this week and she felt fabulous. Anna calls this "bear hair" and Kate was more than happy to play the part. I'm enjoying some one on one time with this little bit today because preschool is cancelled today and Monday, which means 2 less carpool trips today and none at all on Monday, yahoo! Gives me a glimpse into next year's schedule and it makes me all kinds of happy.

It's rainy and in the 60s here, but we are okay with that after 90s last week. It's almost October! It should be rainy and cool, right? We got out some of our Fall decorations and candles last night and the kids were just giddy. Every year they ask for more outside decorations (more than a wreath and pumpkins on the porch, I guess!) and Anna has been scheming about some crafts she wants to make, so that might happen this weekend. Hope you all have some fun Fall plans too!

Friday Favorites

It's been a while since I've been this thankful for Friday, but this past week was a doozy. Fridays are my crazy driving days where I have carpools at 8, 9, 10, 12, 2:15, 2:30 and 4:30. Luckily a sweet mom friend who lives on my street and has a daughter Anna's age has offered to do that 4:30 pick up of our girls every other week. Then the clouds parted and the angels sang! Very thankful for that help. So even though the first half of the day is nuts, I'm always so relieved when the last pick up is done and I don't have to bark about homework or anything else for that matter. Our weekend isn't packed with events either, so I'm hoping to catch up on things that were neglected during this busy week. Here's a list of some random favorites to get us going.

1. Mid-Autumn Moon Festival

I took a picture of the food that I made for this Chinese holiday, but no matter what I did the pictures just did not look appetizing! But it was tasty enough, and it was fun to do a small celebration even if it was super low key. I made this with some rice, vegetables, dumplings, and frozen egg rolls. Honestly this recipe wasn't a keeper, but it felt good to acknowledge the holiday anyway. Since the food didn't look pretty, here's a cute little chicken instead, wearing her "Superman was adopted" t-shirt to preschool.

2. Books, books, books!

We checked out a big stack from the library last week and I just loved these three. All of the kids did too, and we read through them multiple times. Of course these stories are a little simple for Anna and Noah, but the art work kept us all engaged. So good.

The baby ninja cracked us all up.

As did the puppy names in Gaston.

And the writing style in general.

I just LOVE the art in the Moose book.

Ben and I did a little from this book in his AYOPS plans this week. I really like how it's broken down by country and also has suggested children's books for each. Planning to make some made up map crafts with him this coming week. Which brings us to number 3.

3. Benji the math man

Ben is doing Kindergarten work with me each day. He can already read, but he is still a beginner so we feel okay working through the language arts side of his curriculum for now, while adding in books that are a bit more challenging. But when it comes to math, I don't even know where to go next with this little robot! The Kindergarten curriculum starts out suuuuper basic - as in "trace the number four" basic. I've been through this book twice with the other kids and I know it's a slow but steady build, but Ben is just about finished with it all. He told me this week, "I don't wanna do these baby books anymore. Can you just order me the first grade stuff?". Luckily, we homeschool! So I don't have to force him to stay with something if he's ready to move on. I've looked at the work all the way through to the end of the book and he already knows it all, with the exception of a few quick things like counting money.

What's crazy though is that he also already knows everything in the 1st grade book, and some of the things taught in the 2nd grade book! This week while driving in the car he has wanted to do nothing but math. He will say, "Mom! Give me some hundreds and thousands!" and then he will add them in his head. I'm talking 3 digit numbers with carrying. Say what?! Please know that I am not bragging about what a genius he is because I'm such a great teacher. I have NOT taught him any of this yet, and I'll probably have to hire a tutor in the next few years when he out paces me in math. He's just figuring it out on his own and I am more amazed every day. Plotting out a math course for him in on my weekend to-do list, because trace the numbers and 2+2 just won't cut it anymore. Other than that he is still just a sweetie to be around. I took this picture yesterday after he told me, "I love you being my teacher, mom". School time is not always perfect, but some days it so is.

4. A new speech teacher

Kate finally got going in speech therapy again for the Fall. We moved to a school closer to our house, which means a new therapist as well. So far Kate has had 4 different therapists due to their job changes and going from public to private speech and back again. It's tough, because it takes each person a few weeks to really learn Kate's way of talking and they spend a while going over things that were already checked off the list (so to speak) with the last therapist. But her new teacher seems very nice and very invested in helping Kate improve. She's already taught her a couple of tricks that help her remember how to form certain sounds properly. Kate has fun with her, though she's always very upset that someone drew paw prints outside of the school. ;)

5. These blog posts

I feel like this post is a perfect explanation of some of the reasons I'm hoping to keep W home for school, at least for a while. I'm holding that idea very loosely of course, because it's just impossible to know what's best until we meet him and get to know him. But I'm excited about the possibilities and challenges we could work through together. I also really loved this idea of setting primary goals. I feel like that concept will be so freeing once we crash into the reality of 8 years with minimal schooling. The same is true for all of the reasons outlined here.
Several people have asked for updates on our adoption process, and as of right now there is no update. We're on day 30 of what's averaging a 45ish day wait for final approval from China. After that we'll have about 8 weeks to go until travel. So it's all feeling very close! But we still have some time to just sit and wait while paperwork makes it's way through the system.

6. This song

You guys! Have you heard this song? Do you cry like a nut in your car every time it comes on like I do? And then do you cry even more when you hear your tiny girl sitting behind you trying to sing along too?! Ahhh, it's the best.

Have a good weekend, everyone! Only a few more days in the 90s and then we just might get some real Fall around here. I'm making chicken chili tonight just to welcome it right on it.  :)

Dragon Boat Festival

Last weekend was the Dragon Boat Festival down on the river. The first time we went it was almost chilly, but this day was another hot one. Kate, Anna and Noah painted fans. I love this picture of her!

Then they announced "Amazing Chinese Show" would start in a few minutes. The kids were simultaneously amazed and afraid of this guy. He would shake his head and his mask would change.

Then there was a magic show, and this cute boy got asked to come on stage and participate.

This time Kate was going to use those chop sticks properly! She was very proud that she could pick up grass and sticks.

Then there was a dance? fight? sort of show. I have to say, we were all pretty mesmerized.

The dragon boat races were going on throughout the day. It was funny to see some boats jam packed with rowers and some were pretty sparse. But they worked hard and all of the races had close finishes.

Can you tell that this was a forced, look directly into the sun and try to smile, sort of photo?

They had fun and it was nice to see a few friends from our adoption group while we were there. This weekend has a balloon festival, a neighborhood festival, and a couple of local craft fairs. We love these Fall activities, even if it is still 90 degrees!

World Fest

A couple of weekends ago our city hosted World Fest so we went down for the day. We planned to get there for the Inner Mongolian Horse Head Fiddle and Throat Singing, since Kate is from Inner Mongolia. She was less than impressed and standing in the direct sun had all four kids asking when we could leave, and we had just gotten there! So after a good 15 minutes or more of listening we moved on. They were much more interested in the booths, especially the ones that had instruments they could try.

We all had to touch these glass bead necklaces. They were huge!

In the sister cities booth the kids drew their own flags. I think Kate's ended up being for the Country of Rainbow Explosions.

Then we found the China area and we all jumped into some crafts and projects. This is also where I was grateful for sunglasses, because they hid the fact that I was fighting back tears again and again. I love the Chinese culture, but I always get so sad thinking about that part of Kate's life that she won't ever fully have as her own and I worry that she will never feel completely comfortable in either sphere. But this was fun! We were doing crafts! And playing games! So I calmed myself down and we went on with fun. Kate doesn't need a crazy emotional mama on top of everything else, ha!

Kate was determined to master the chopsticks. Luckily Cheerios slide right on the ends, hee hee.

The kids saw some other people carrying around wooden birdhouses and immediately started asking to make their own. Wasn't Anna's papercut monkey cute?

Nathan was super patient with the little two and helped them hammer in every nail. They were very proud of their creations and once we got home they doused them in glue and blobs of gold glitter. Sorry, birds.

It was a fun day downtown. :)

Ben's first week

I knew I didn't want to start school with Ben until the big two were back in classes, because it's just easier to be in school mode if your siblings aren't still having summer! I waited a while to order his curriculum since we're lucky enough to have the actual company and printing house in our city. Surprisingly though (not really) lots of people had this same idea, so when I called to order I found out that I couldn't even pick it up until the same day that Anna and Noah went back. So instead of starting that same day, Ben got one more day of summer while I sorted through the books and made plans for the rest of the week.

I have to admit, when I opened our curriculum boxes I was overwhelmed. I shouldn't have been surprised because they weighed a ton - as in, I almost didn't make it to the car when Ben decided to investigate the door mechanics rather than open it for me! Our Junior Kindergarten curriculum was also from the same company, but it wasn't near as much material. Luckily it looks like more than it really is, and Ben will in no way be tied to workbooks all day. A lot of this is teacher manuals and some of it won't even be fully used this year. Because Anna and Noah went through this same curriculum in Kindergarten, I'm very familiar with how it all works together and how much time we need to get through a typical lesson.

For most of that first day I let Ben and Kate play while I sat here, sorting and planning and seriously feeling giddy. The table stayed like this for a couple of days while we did school on the fringe, but I'm happy to say it's organized now.....at least until I carry out my full school room plans later this year.

The next morning we took Anna and Noah and Kate to school, and Ben and I came home to get started.

I loved that I could take that picture with his little sign and instead of rushing him off to go somewhere we sat and looked at caterpillars on the driveway for as long as he wanted.

The next few days were a complete joy. Really, he is so fun to teach and he loves it all. My biggest complaint so far is that he wants to snuggle all the time, which makes writing a little difficult. Not really a problem!

I love how Kindergarten brings in music and art study and he really loved his first artist card - Birch forest by Gustav Klimt. He was so cute when we discussed it in the house. He kept over pronouncing it and saying, "Kliiiiim-T, Klimmmmt, I'm gonna have to practice that name!". Then we went outside because he remembered that we have some birch trees in our yard. He literally squealed when he held up the art card and saw that it matched some of our trees.

Then he wanted to know the names of all the trees in our yard (and there are a lot!) and he just couldn't get over how the book pages looked the same. Kate got in on it too and they were both so excited. The first day we had a leaf hunt to make his tree picture above and seeing the book match the yard sent us on another little trip to learn more about trees.

From an academic standpoint, Kindergarten is starting off very easy for him. The first 6 weeks of this curriculum (in just about every grade) incorporates review from the past year, so we're flying through the book work. In a week and a half we've done 3 weeks of work, but I know that speed won't last forever, and we will encounter new material for him soon. He already knows how to read, so I'm looking forward to getting him onto new stories, and his little math mind continues to outpace anything I offer. Kate joins in when we're home and she's already writing like crazy....and maybe sometimes on surfaces she shouldn't write on at all!

We're also working in our A Year of Playing Skillfully program and of course they love everything we've done so far. Nathan sneaked these balloons into the house the night before so that we could have our big reveal to get started - a hot air balloon to take us on our new journey. Yes, that is a cardboard box with no decoration, and yes those balloons were half way deflated by the next morning. But I'm sure it won't be shocking to know that they still LOVED it and thought it was the best thing ever.

We played in the box, the cut the stings off the balloons to play with them on the floor, read some hot air balloon themed books and designed our own on these coloring pages. I think Ben's face shows how he felt about it all.

He is an active little boy, so of course he has groaned a few times when I've asked him to do some things, but he really understands what a gift it is to be home. On maybe day two he finished his work and looked up at me and said, "Wait....if I was at school with Noah and Anna right now, I wouldn't be done until like, way later!". That's right, buddy, you've got it pretty good. ;) Because I just have one student, we can get through the work so much faster than if I had an entire class to work with. That leaves time to go out and play and take mid-day bike rides. Nathan was working from home that day so I busted him out of his home office and he came with us for a little break.

With the whole year in front of us I'm excited to see where we go. Kate is in preschool 3 mornings a week but when she is here she's super eager to be involved, so I'm seeing good things for keeping her home next year too. And when W joins us at the end of this year we hope he enjoys it at a laid back pace as well. Someone asked me last week how long I plan to homeschool Ben and really, the older I've gotten the more I've embraced the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" mindset. Homeschooling started last year with him out of necessity - the Junior Kindergarten at our campus wasn't open due to construction and the only other option was across town at the same start time as Anna and Noah. It just wasn't possible for me to be in two places at once. But we had a blast doing it at home last year and he learned a ton. I really enjoyed teaching him and I really enjoyed not dragging him out of bed at 6am and fighting through homework late into the evening. So much so that I constantly ask the older two if they want to come home for school too, ha! Maybe one day... For now I'm enjoying my time with just Ben, looking forward to figuring out what W will need this winter, and planning for next fall when Kate will join and our little school will go from 1 to 3 students! Tomorrow Ben starts back at his Friday enrichment group and they've already told us that they're happy to have our other two once they're ready. I feel like it's going to be so good for all three of them.

Speaking of our school, I admit I always thought it was a little silly when people would name their homeschool. I just didn't see the need and thought it was kind of funny. But in my state you have to inform the city and school district of your intent to homeschool any child age 6 or above and guess what - they want a school name on that record. Of course you could just use Your Last Name School. But why not make it fun? So we are Sprout Hill Academy. And one day I just might have to get that embroidered on something, hee hee.

Kate's First Days

It's Friday! And we all survived our first week of school! Here's a glance at the chicken's days so far.

Kate's first day of preschool was actually the day before Anna and Noah went back. I wondered how she would feel leaving the van when all of her siblings were still in there, but excitement about seeing her friends outweighed any desire to stay home with us. She jumped out with a huge smile and practically dragged her teacher into the building by the hand.

These pictures were taken the Friday before when we visited her school for the little preview day that they do. I love her in this little shirt, even if she isn't a fan of the collar.  ;)

Looking like a teenager.

She really wouldn't have noticed if I had just gone back to the car. She was so excited to get in there!

She did have a little anxiety as the room filled with friends. Her class has two teachers and all of our kids have had both of them together for the last 7 years. But this year one of them switched to a new room, so she has one from last year and one new teacher. She wasn't so sure about that, and I got several questions as she looked around and realized her old teacher wasn't there. I also got lots of, "Mom? I love you. Mom? Mom? I love you", a sure sign she's feeling unsure. Luckily her best little friend is in her class again, so they sat side by side and smiled at each other.  :)

The following Monday was her real first day, meaning we use carpool and moms don't go into the class. This picture is blurry because she was literally dancing as she waited to get out. You can see how excited Anna was there in the background. After learning the joy of sleeping in this summer, preschool meant an earlier morning than she wanted.

Kate goes three mornings a week and completely loves it so far, as I knew she would. This is my last year of  having a preschooler too, so I'm trying to enjoy it with her.

After some curriculum delays Ben finally started school this week too, so I'll share more on his first week soon. Today we went to his Meet the Teacher day at his homeschool enrichment group, even though it's the same teacher that he had last year, and he is excited to get going. :)
