The Littles

Can't forget about our little scholars too! This week Ben finished Kindergarten! I'm so proud of him. The secret is that we moved on to first grade reading and math probably a month ago, but yesterday I had him complete those last few things in his Kindergarten work so that we could officially say he was all done! I've loved watching him grow over this past year and I love seeing him read just about everything now. He still loves math, just like Noah, and he still loves to draw illustrations for the things he reads. On the days he doesn't feel like drawing I basically beg him to, just because I so love to look back at those when they're older! He's so happy to be in first grade now. We will keep moving through his material over the summer, with plenty of breaks for fun too.

This little guy made huge progress too! He came home knowing how to sing the alphabet and he did know some of his letter sounds, but I knew we had a way to go. Over a few weeks he really picked up on the rest of the sounds by playing with those little felt letters that I grabbed from the Target Dollar spot before I even met him. I tried some curriculum loaned to me by a friend...I tried some worksheets I printed off the internet....I tried jumping into the middle of some books we already had...so many things assume that a child has a basic understanding of English. When I would pick up a book that said, "Parent tells child, 'This is the letter A. Point to the words that start with the A sound", I would sigh and close the book. He just couldn't do what some of the very beginner books were asking, because he didn't have the vocabulary yet.

Finally I decided to just go back to what I know, the phonics program that taught Anna and Noah and Ben to read so well. I had resisted using it because Will already knew his letter sounds, and it felt too easy for him. But after a while I took the advice from other moms and from the publishers themselves, and decided to just start at square one. It never hurts to have a child feel super successful in those first few weeks! So he flew through Book A in probably one third of the time it normally takes. He never said it was too easy, but he did it happily and felt good about it all. Once we got to the end and it was having him read short stories, he would sometimes look at the page and say, "Oh no, this too hurting!", which is how he says something is hard to do. But I told him I would help him so he gave it a try - and of course he could do it all on his own! I wanted to be very intentional about not letting him skip ahead if he hadn't really understood the material, so I was thrilled to see him reading and sounding out words all on his own! We still have some barriers based on this being his second language. Hearing rhyme is a struggle, as is recognizing sounds in the middle of a word. But he is progressing so well. He was SO excited to get to move on to Book B and after he read the first short story in that one he smiled up and me and said, "Mom! I know-a so much-a English now!".

Kate finished preschool on Wednesday but this morning was her art show. She was proud to show us her butterfly and she was happy to see some of her friends.

We had to get a photo with her sweet teachers. The one on the right has been with us since Anna's first day.

We had some gifts for them that were a little heavy so we said we would leave them down in the classroom. Everything had been taken down for the painters coming next week, but I made them stand by their old cubbies so I could take a picture. Sniff sniff...I can't believe we won't be back in that dear Owl Class ever again. I got sad walking down that hall for the last time, remembering Anna skipping along in her sparkle shoes and Noah and Ben having to be pried off my leg, ha. I'm glad they have such fun memories of those days too.

One last photo by the stained glass. I told Will that he could be in this photo too, but he wasn't happy because I was taking so long and he wanted to leave and eat lunch!

So now the little kids are all finished with school too, at least for a week or so! They're so excited for their new school in the Fall and Kate and Will ask at least once a week when they can start. As much as I've loved the preschool years, we really are ready to move on. I will miss the sweetness of it all, but I will not miss driving the length of the busy road we take to get there, or the mid-day carpool that often interrupted our school time at home. I'm looking forward to the new routines we will make in the Fall!

Wrapping Up

You guys. School is pretty much over. Anna and Noah have one more day. Kate is finished except for walking us through her little art show on Friday, and Ben has one more lesson and he's finished with Kindergarten. Never mind the fact that the youngest three will just keep going on school with me next week, because it will still be summer! How on earth?! I have to admit that I'm not at all prepared for summer, but these end of the year events are making me realize that it's here whether I'm ready or not!

This morning was a little crazy because Nathan had to leave at 6 a.m. for an out of town meeting and three kids had to be in two different places at the same time. I got all 5 up and ready, drove Anna and Noah to their event, ran Kate over to preschool and left her in the "Early Birds" (that we've only used maybe 3 times in 8 years?), and raced back to Anna and Noah with the little boys in tow. Luckily their school Closing Ceremony today was for grades 3 - 6 and when I slid into the back row the third graders were still up there. I hadn't missed anything yet!

They did their recitations and the sixth graders sang this little Dwarves Song song since they read the Hobbit in the last month. I thought it was so cute a cappella and all. You will need to just close your eyes and listen, because the actual video may give you motion sickness. Benji was bored and floppy and laying all over my arms!

(video)

Anna told me on the way there that morning that she had a solo and I was so worried that I would miss it, but I didn't! She kept saying, "Mom. It's literally just one word. I'm the final high note and that's all". She was right! Crank up your volume, because I could barely hear her! She's at the podium for the first few seconds of this video. Noah is in this video too. If you see where Anna sort of slinks back in (hee hee), Noah is a couple of rows down and more to the center.

(video)

One happy surprise was that Anna was awarded the Excellence in Math award for the whole 6th grade! Neither of us knew, so it was really fun to see her walk up there. I was thrilled because she always says she's not good at math in spite of her A on every report card and test. Look at you, math whiz!

After the ceremony the little boys and I drove Anna and Noah over to school and went home for about 40 minutes before we had to run back over to get Kate. I've been thinking about this day for months - the very last day of preschool for Kate and for our family. We've had a child in preschool for 8 years now and I can't believe I won't be sitting in that carpool again next Fall. I didn't know on Monday that we would be doing early birds on Wednesday, but I knew it was one of our last days. Everyone unbuckles their child once we're in the parking lot and they can wave at the director as we pull into place. I'm so glad I took this little video of Kate talking to Mrs.Bailey for the last time. Please enjoy her funny face as she notices me videoing her. :)

(video)

And because I have to, here is her very first day of preschool, and a photo from today. She looked so tiny there! She insisted on the Snoopy shirt this morning and wasn't thrilled that it was starting to rain on her.

I still can't believe we are all finished with preschool. This feels like yesterday. And this. And of course this. We have adored our little school and we're so thankful to the teachers that have been with us for all eight years. I'm excited for our next chapter, but it's sad to close this one for good.

*********************************

So, I wrote all of this yesterday and didn't have time to finish it. To be honest, even yesterday I was feeling a little afraid of the summer. Usually the thrill of no more packing lunches, washing uniforms, or struggling through homework has me counting the days until it's over. But this year the idea of five bored kids for 97 days had me a tad intimidated! This morning I slept as last as possible to still get a shower and get them to school on time, and both kids were awake before I got to them because they were so excited about it being the last day. These things combined gave me a little reminder of what our summer mornings feel like with no rush, no demands, no panic. Of course we will still have places we need to be over the summer like speech and violin, but.....Now I'm ready for summer. I think I felt just as excited as they did driving them to school this morning. It's the last day, yahooo!!

Since Nathan was home I didn't take any other kids with me, so once Anna and Noah were out I got myself a You-went-to-China-for-a-month-and-parented-a-non-English-speaking-child-for-the-last-5-months-and-homeschooled-and-kept-up-with-*regular*-school-demands-and-you-didn't-die congratulatory iced coffee. We made it!

I still have many summer plans to make, but I feel ready to tackle the next three months. Future iced coffees will probably help when my motivation starts to slump in early August.  ;)

"I don't know park"

When Will doesn't know what a word means, he will say, "I don't know ______" and add in that word. On Saturday after soccer we told him we were going to the park and he said, "I don't know park. Is fun?" and we said, "Yes! Very fun! Swings and slides!" (complete with hand motions). Then he yelled out, "Oh! I like-ah very fun! I like-ah park!" :)

Once we arrived he settled into a squat to watch the creek flow by. I sent this photo to my friend Ashley and she said he must have strong thighs.

Then he did this. Do you know much I would injure myself if I tried this?
(video)

Anna and Noah watched the creek for quite a while. Fourth grade is the year they really study insects, so Noah was calling out, "There's a water boatman!" and Anna was joining in commenting on all of the bug's physical features since she's already had that class too. This picture makes them look so big to me. Anna still has her stick legs but look at Noah's giant feet! This week at the hospital they measured him and said he's 5'1". That's too big to have just turned 10 last month!

No matter how big they get I will always feel nervous when they do things like this.

They always like playing Frisbee. I loved Ben's mid-air twist in this photo!

When I went to take a picture of Kate on the slide she yelled, "Wait!" and then got into this fancy pose, hee hee.

Will cracked up when we showed him his static hair in this photo.

Love this hammy girl.

At one point he had 4 kids off of the ground.

These next three photos....he thought I was taking a video instead of still shots. But they just cracked me up too much to leave them out. Sorry, honey. ;) Not sorry.

So then I did take a video. Look out kids, giant daddy on the play equipment!
(video)

Then Will had to give it a go. He's so strong! A lady I know who adopted one of Will's friends commented this week that her son always talks about muscles and being strong and she thinks it must have been a frequent topic among boys that age in the orphanage. I had to laugh because Will always wants to see if people have muscles and talk about who is the strongest!

Excuse my barking at Anna to move. She jumped up right in front of where Will was headed and I knew he would be too tired to wait for her to move!
(video)

It was a fun way to enjoy the fantastic weather we've had lately, and it was fun to see even the bigger kids still enjoy the park.

Mother's Day weekend

This was a busy weekend with lots of ups and downs. It started a little early for us, because Will had oral surgery on Thursday morning and then we laid low on Friday. I hadn't used Google translate since New York because he's doing so great with language and we rarely need it anymore. But for this one I wanted to be sure he completely understood what was going to happen, so I typed it all out for him the night before. And like the smartie that he is, he listened closely, and then repeated it all back to me in English to be sure he had it right!

When we arrived he was so nervous. He held my hand the whole time and he kept looking around quickly and sitting on the edge of his seat. Luckily the patient before us had cancelled, so we were able to get right into things without waiting really at all. Once he drank the Versed he started to smile a little, then laugh and pretend that the hospital TV remote was a telephone. He kept sitting up and saying, "Whoa" and rocking back and forth slowly. He seemed to really be enjoying that loopy sensation, and he even looked at the TV and told us he saw two Mickeys!

The surgery took even longer than they planned, almost 3 hours. He had 8 teeth removed, 7 fillings, a handful of sealants put on, two stainless steels caps, and finally a cleaning and fluoride treatment. It was a ton of work, but we were so happy to get his mouth healthy. He never let on much that his teeth were hurting him before, but that night he must have thanked me 10 times for getting rid of his old teeth. We know it must have been bad if he was happier without all of them! He's very excited for his new teeth to come in, and he's already eating just about everything he did before. Kids are so amazing. If I'd had 8 teeth pulled I would have been a total wimp the next day. Will was up running and eating and riding his bike and just being a normal kid. I had cancelled school for us that day, but he asked when we would start again! Such a brave, strong boy. Tomorrow we drive up to the children's hospital we were at a few months ago so we can have our pre-op appointment for his surgery in June. He's excited because he gets to watch a movie in the car on long drives.

Saturday Ben had a soccer game and we all went to cheer him on....or read a book. ;)

This was just before Noah dumped himself over backwards in that chair.

This little love has so much fun with soccer. I love watching him get in there and go after the ball but also just laugh it off when the other team scores.

After soccer we went to the park because it was such a gorgeous day. I took so many pictures and videos that I'll give them their own post. :)

That night Noah started to feel bad again. He had missed the entire week of school because he had a fever that just wouldn't go away. It would drop down some after a dose of ibuprofen, but then it would slowly climb right back up. An immediate care type clinic told us that he didn't have strep throat but that he did have the start of an ear infection, so he had been on an antibiotic for several days, but the fever just wouldn't leave. By Saturday (6 days) we knew something wasn't right. I called his pediatrician who recommended we go to emergency room at the children's hospital. Sure enough, after all kinds of blood work and questions and a chest X-ray we discovered that he had strep throat and pneumonia. So we ditched the antibiotics that he had been on and replaced them with 2 stronger ones, and sure enough the fever finally went away for good. He's still coughing some when he overexerts himself, but he's finally back to jumping up to smack door frames all over the house night and day, ha. It's good to have him back to his old energy level!

So we missed Mother's Day dinner that night with my family. The next morning we realized we also couldn't go to church. Nathan offered to stay home with Noah so that I could go, but honestly I just would have been sad sitting there alone, so I stayed home too. Kate ran downstairs to make me this yummy breakfast and was so proud of herself.

Since Noah was feeling good again we started to slog through his make up school work bit by bit. I was getting frustrated and overwhelmed and Nathan suggested that I just take a kid or two and go out for a while (AKA- I was acting crazy and he took pity on me). So Anna and I took off for some lunch and a few errands. I love hanging out with her!

The kids made the sweetest cards and Nathan got me a new necklace with all five of my little birdies represented! I had never explained my 4 eggs necklace to Will for obvious reasons, but when I named each egg in this one his face just lit up. He said, "First have 3 kids. Then go to China get Kate, have 4 kids. Then go to China get Will, have 5 kids!". He's so sweet!

Just this week I was talking with Nathan about the birth mom discussion. With Kate it's always been a wide open topic and we talk about it like we talk about anything else day to day. But with Will the language barrier has prevented us from talking about it from day one. This morning he came over to me and was looking at my necklace and naming the eggs. Then he went down the list again, telling me which kids came from "the tummy" and which kids came from China. When he stopped I said, "You know, you came from a tummy too, from your China mom". He nodded yes and then said, "Yeah, I had China mom, but she die. Well, I don't know she die. I just a baby then. I too little. I not know." I told him that was okay and he kind of ran off to play. But I was thankful to get a little glimpse into his view of his past and I'm eager to hear more as he gains the language to share.

Overall it was a good weekend. Lately I've felt so inadequate compared to the needs of all these kids, but I know we're doing fine. Busy will be the name of the game for many more years, but I'm so thankful for this life and all of these little (and not so little anymore!) bodies that call me Mom.

Finally Friday! And a chance to catch up

Where did the month of April go? It's certainly not on my little sidebar of posts over there, is it? Life has been crazy busy, but today preschool is cancelled so we are staying home until it's time to get Anna and Noah. The constant rain for days on end is making that easier!

So what have we been up to lately? So much! A million birthdays, doctor visits, school events, travel, holidays, and just regular life. Here's a quick recap.

Everyone keeps asking how Will is doing and the short answer is that he is doing fantastic. We've had some hard moments, but they always pass and he's back to being his laid back and happy little self. We've noticed as the weeks have passed that he's getting better at handling things, and he's no longer offended by little slights and accidental hurts from his siblings or other kids. He's learning to laugh at himself and take things in stride even better than he did when we met - and even then he was pretty good about things like that! His confidence in speaking has increased too. He's always talked a ton to us but talking to strangers has been a challenge. Just in the last few weeks he has said goodbye to people that say it to him (a big deal!) and this week he told someone his name when they asked. This is a giant party in our eyes!! So proud of him and how brave he is. A couple of weeks ago he had the awesome opportunity to talk to one of his "China friends" on FaceTime. This little guy came home a few weeks after Will and lives in Colorado now. It was so fun to watch them talk (in Mandarin, for over an hour and a half!) and we plan to talk again this weekend. Will tells me that this little boy slept in the bed next to him and was his good friend. I'm so glad they can still talk!

We had an unexpected trip to NY when Nathan's grandpa passed away. It was a fast and busy weekend, but it was good to visit family there and to honor his grandpa's life. Noah struggled with it more than we expected, but we're glad he has such sweet memories of his great-grandpa even though he hadn't seen him in a couple of years.

This little guy got to see the ocean for the first time. He's asked just about every day since if we can go back.

We also celebrated his first Easter. Thanks to the Bible App for Kids that can be set to Mandarin, he already knew a little of the story...because whew!, Easter is a hard one to explain to a kid with no background knowledge! He's so eager to learn though and I love how he now says that Jesus "can do anything"!

Noah had his Famous Men of Rome play just like Anna did in the 4th grade. He was Tarquin and did a great job reciting his lines, even though we could tell that he couldn't get off of that stage fast enough! I would feel the same way.

This smartie girl got an award for her high score on the National Latin Exam, just like she did last year. Apparently last year's grade was 1 point higher which got her a different award, but we assured her that one point was nothing and she was still a Latin rock star!

These two had their birthdays, Anna's 12th and Noah's 10th. I have no idea how that happened since they both started preschool just last week, but here they are - hilarious and smart and so much fun. They agreed on a Pusheen cat party theme for family this year and Anna made her own fondant cake decorations. It's hard to believe I have two kids in the double digits now, and that they're about to finish 6th and 4th grade!

Speaking of school, yesterday we had our family interview at the little 2 day school we're using for the youngest three in the Fall. It went well and we were so proud of Will for answering when they asked his name and age. We saw a few tears when they asked him to write something and he couldn't but the lady talking with us couldn't have been more kind and encouraging, and when we got home Will told me she was "so nice and say little American okay" - what he meant was that she told him it was perfectly fine that he only had a little bit of English. Because it's a homeschool group, I was pretty confidant that they would be flexible with grade levels and expectations for Will, and I was correct. They suggested we actually have him in the same class as Ben for this Fall and I think it really will be best. He will be thrilled that they get to stick together and the curriculum advisor pointed out that Ben will also be able to help Will more because their work will be the same. If Will wants to jump ahead a grade or even two a few years from now, they welcome that as well, so we'll see how it goes!

We're thankful that they work with many adopted children and they're very familiar with their unique needs. We're excited to get started and once we got home all three kids were asking, "Can we start tomorrow? The next day?". I'm learning every day to shift my thinking from how things *should* be on paper, to how they really need to be in real life, and I'm grateful that homeschooling offers that flexibility. Will won't just be shuffled through a system and pushed along with no thought to his actual abilities, and he will get to make some "America friends" as he calls them.  :) It's going to be fun to still have them home most of the time, but to see them branch out a little on their own as well.

This week we were finally (after weeks and weeks of phone calls and insurance runaround!) able to lock in some medical appointments for Will. He will be having oral surgery next week and some cleft related surgery in early June. We will keep you posted, but luckily neither of these should be too difficult of a recovery for him.

So that's April in a nutshell, leaving out the 4 billion other ways we filled the days. We're all counting down to summer, though I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a tad nervous about having 5 bored kids on my hands for over three months. The good news is that this is Will's first summer in America, so we have lots of fun things to show him and to do together. I will keep schooling through the summer with the youngest three and Anna and Noah will have their usual summer reading and Latin and math. But even if there is a little boredom, we are more than ready to stop washing uniforms and studying for tests for a while! Maybe I can even get back into this space a little more often. :)
