For Health and Strength

The big story at our house right now is our health. Jared came home from CA with the flu. That turned into bronchitis and he is currently on antibiotics for infection in both his ears and throat. It is the sickest I've seen him in 7 years. He still can't hear at all out of his right ear, but is finally getting some relief and, it seems, like some improvement with the medicine. He has kept up with all of his graduation requirements, which has been a lot harder with him feeling so poorly. But, he's not letting it get him down.

Meanwhile, most of you who know me well know that I haven't really been blessed with abounding energy or a "robust constitution." :) I try not to be jealous of all you high energy folks buzzing all around me. ;) But, since Benjamin's birth I've been a bit more fragile and over the last couple of months there have been times when I've felt pretty bad.

I have been seeking answers and I am finding insight and new understanding in the Word of Wisdom and other scriptures. I am feeling lots of hope. I am also going to head into the doctor for a check up and make sure we aren't missing anything that could use some attention.

Jared and I are both ready for more health and strength, so we are working on it together. Thankfully, we are being blessed with the energy we need for (most :) of life right now and for our moving preparations. We are thankful for the lift your love and prayers give us every day.

Winding Down

Last Saturday we went to Ella and Aden's Birthday party. The kids flew kites, fed the ducks, slirped freezer pops and had a fabulous time. Monday,we celebrated Memorial Day with the Hogues, our "goodbye" visit. And Tuesday, Hannah had another soccer game. This week, by half time she decided she was done running in the heat. It was a much warmer day then we have had.

It turns out those few days of heat a while back were a fluke, because we've actually had the longest spring ever this year. It has been three long months of very mild (70s, low 80s) temperatures and lots of rain. Benjamin loves to hear the rain and the thunder.

Jared has finished up all but 2 hours in the Clinic, which are scheduled for Monday. He's almost done!

We are winding down, visiting friends, sorting, packing and planning. We are looking forward to our last few weeks here and to the bright new chapter on our horizon.

Bonus pics from the past couple of weeks...

God Bless America and Our Uncle Tim

My Brother-In-Law, Tim, has been deployed to Iraq. He is going to build streets, schools and clinics. He believes in his country, freedom and doing the right thing, which makes him a hero to me. I am humbled and inspired by his courage and strength. We love him and will be praying for him and for my sister every day. Please feel free to join us.

GOOOOOOOAL! GOOOOOOOAL! GOOOOOOOAL!

Last week Hannah ran off the soccer field in tears. Running around after a bunch of big boys (who push and shove) and watching them kick the ball, finally got to be too much for her. Soccer really wasn't a whole lot of fun. At the skills clinic and practices she had her own ball and loved every drill. But the games proved to be a disappointment, because she didn't quite know how or if she even wanted to try to get into that bunch of big, pushy boys. Jared wasn't with us last week and I didn't really see away around this problem. I tried to encourage her to play, but I had to admit, there wasn't a whole lot she was able to do. Well, this week, Dad to the rescue. He could see that Hannah was scared to get in there and was sad about it. He took her little hand and ran out on the field with her. He helped her stay outside the pack but in good position for getting to and moving the ball. Her first kick and she was elated. She was able to move the ball toward the goal twice and then, in a bit of soccer magic, it happened...Hannah's first goal! She was over the top. Jared was over the top! By the last quarter she was running and getting in there all on her own, with just a little encouragement from Dad and Coach Will, who was super excited for her success also. She even played goalie for a bit. (I wish I had a picture of her goalie stance! :) It may be a month early, but, now, I'm nominating Jared for Dad of the Year 2009! :) Jared says he's just glad Hannie didn't rip her shirt off after the big GOOOOOOOOOAL! :)

This Weekend...

Jared is in CA, holding his beautiful, new baby niece, Brielle. He took his last board exams at Life West on Friday and Saturday. This trip came right after his board reviews in Atlanta. We miss him a lot and can't wait for him to be home tomorrow night!

My amazing sister, brother-in-law and nephew Josh came to visit us on Thursday and stayed until early this afternoon. They got to see Hannah's soccer game and a lot of sorting, fixing, cleaning, packing and getting the house/property ready for the sale and our move was accomplished. We are so grateful for the talents and skills that the Smiths have and use in the service of others so willingly and with so much love and kindness.

The kids and I attended a wonderful Stake Conference today. Elder Oaks was visiting and spoke. It was an awesome experience for me. He and the visiting Seventy that spoke before him spoke directly to 4 or 5 different things that have been in my heart and on my mind lately. I have a testimony of the Holy Ghost and am thankful that Heavenly Father helped me prepare for Stake Conference. The kids were amazing and even without Daddy, stayed quiet, content and engaged in activities in the middle of a long row for the whole two hours. I was so proud and thankful. I even got to jot down a couple of notes.

I thought I'd share a quote I came across while sorting through a pile of papers this weekend. I think this one is worth memorizing.

"People are often unreasonable, illogical and self-centered;
Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives;
Be kind anyway.

If you are successful, you will win some false friends, and some true enemies;
Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you;
Be honest and frank anyway.

What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight;
Build anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous;
Be happy anyway.

The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow;
Do good anyway.

Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough;
Give the world the best you have anyway.

You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and God;
It was never between you and them anyway."

(This is one version of the poem credited to Mother Teresa. It seems that she rewrote "The Paradoxical Commandments" by Kent M. Keith. I'm glad she did.)

Mother of the Year 2009

I nominated Debbie for a very special award. Emily Young informed us that she won. Thanks for the heads up Emily. Click here.

Hannah's Graduation Day!

A few weeks back Hannah asked me, "Am I going to graduate like Daddy?" She was wondering about her dance recital. Thinking that might be her graduation from dance school. We have been excited for and looking forward to Hannah's "Graduation Day" ever since. She knew that graduation meant that she would be all done with dance school for now and expected a celebration. :) Here are a couple of photos from her dress rehearsal.

Emma Jane, Jenna, Lillah, Emma, Mary & Hannah.

We didn't get any good pics of the actual performance...so enhance this one with your imagination. Hannah is that beautiful little blur on the far right. :)

Here she is doing her "cutest little baby face."

Hannah's class danced to Little Richard's "Baby Face." (The version playing on the blog isn't the exact one they used, but you'll definitely get the idea. :) Without any bias :), I have to say Hannah's class stole the show. They for sure received the biggest audience response of the day. A lot of laughing for joy at how adorable they were, 2 mid performance ovations and much clapping and cheering at the end. Her performance was at the beginning of the recital and everybody was still there. The whole auditorium was packed by at least a couple hundred. It was awesome.

Hannah remembered her steps well and hammed it up! She was so proud of her self! When she first came out on stage Benjamin just kept saying, "Sissy!, Sissy!" and at the end he clapped and cheered "Nanna, Nanna."  Her Daddy presented her with her "Graduation Surprise," a big bouquet of flowers. I couldn't have been more proud! Happy Graduation Hannah!!

Benjamin's Follow Up

Ben's fever broke the next morning. That day Hannah had her 24 hour fever, without event. We are very glad to have two, back-to-normal, healthy kiddos running around again. I thought you might like a bit of photographic proof. :) Here's Ben in Nursery today. He was very lovingly attending to this baby. He asked for a blanket for her and fed her her bottle. When I started to take the picture he lifted her up and told her to "cheese." Now, that's our Benjamin!

Greenville Zoo

The day before Ben got sick we went to the Zoo with my friend and visiting teaching companion Brittney and her two little ones, Ella and Aden. I have to say, on a side note, that I have really been blessed with wonderful VT companions. I'm especially glad that Trina, my companion in Hayward, and Brittney and I were put together, because now they are good friends of mine. Brittney and I were pregnant with Ben and Ella at the same time. Ella is a little less than a month older and she and Benjamin are good buddies. We love to get together and play with them. Hannah loves all their cool toys and is a good big sister to the bunch. No pictures of Aden, a brown eyed heart breaker a year younger than Ella and Ben, but he had a good time too. :)

Ben's Brave Day

Wednesday morning at 10am, out of the blue, Ben said, "hurt" and cuddled into my chest. He went limp and felt a little warm. Then he got pale really quickly, stopped responding almost completely and his eyes started drooping like he was going to go unconscious.

We had just sent Hannah into dance class. All of the other Mom's were like angels. As soon as Ben got sick Jamie ran to get Hannah's dance teacher, while Breanna, the Academy Director, took over the class. Things happened so fast and I was so worried for Ben. Lynn kept me focussed on calling Jared and Melissa, dialed the numbers on her cell phone, since I didn't have ours with me. Jennifer, Hannah's teacher, offered to have Campus Security drive us to the infirmary, but after calling ahead and finding out that there wasn't a nurse there, and because it was clear that Ben needed attention, she recommended a near by hospital. By the time I got through to Jared, I asked him to meet us at the ER.

The hospital happened to be one I am less familiar with.  So, after Campus Security drove us to our car, Melissa, drove ahead of us in her car, so that I didn't have to think about how to get there and to make sure I got there the quickest way. Hannah and I sang Popcorn Popping all the way to the hospital trying to keep Ben alert, he was constantly on the verge of unconsciousness. I didn't know what would happen if his eyes stayed closed. If I said, "I love you Ben," he would whisper back, "wuv oo mommy." But that was it.

Melissa, brought Hannah into the ER to meet Ben and I who had gone in ahead. She told me later that, Hannah, wondering what was going on, had asked her, "Does he have a frog in his throat?" It was something I had heard vaguely at the time, but had forgotten. Melissa also told me how scared she had been and how she tried to pretend she was calm and unafraid for me that day. She told me that she had been praying for us and that every night afterwards her little boy, one of Ben's dance class play buddies, would pray and thank God for Ben.

While we were waiting for Jared, I asked Heavenly Father to send another Priesthood holder. My prayer was answered right away. Our good friend Michael Hogue happened to be in the clinic with Jared and quickly drove him over. Thankfully, Michael was also able to stay with Hannah. He took her to the Cafeteria for lunch and on many walks around the hospital.

When Jared saw Ben he was pretty concerned and when the nurse finally looked over at Ben, while taking his history, she called out a "code 3" and had a doctor come immediately. The doctor examined Ben. They took his temperature, put in an IV (very sad), drew blood, gave him some Tylenol and ordered a CAT scan because Ben had fallen a few times in the last week and a half and they wanted to rule out damage to the brain. Jared gave him a blessing. Since the doctor told us it was ok to let him fall asleep, as soon as he got the Tylenol, he did.

We waited for a urine sample and the CAT scan. It felt like deja vu sitting their in the ER, holding my baby boy, praying. Just like when Ben was 10 weeks old with that super high fever and everything we went through with that.

Eventually, they pushed our bed down to the CAT scan room but Ben woke up in the machine before they could run the test. When he woke up he wasn't limp any more, he was alert and acting like himself. It was such an amazing relief to see him acting like himself, but without the scan and the labs I wasn't sure how relieved I should be.

We headed back to the room to wait for the urine sample and see if he'd fall asleep again so we could give the CAT scan another try. Ben did fall asleep but they came in to do his flu test (not a fun procedure), which woke him up, and after sipping down quite a bit of apple juice and water, the urine sample finally came. Ben stayed awake and alert and was himself while we waited for the labs.

The doctor was encouraged by Ben's behavior, so much so that she canceled the CAT scan. When the labs came back, they were all normal. And so, it was determined that Ben probably had a febrile seizure caused by a rapid rise in temperature, caused by a virus. A best case scenario ending to a day when there were moments we feared the worst.

We are deeply grateful for many things. Good nurses and doctors, good friends and the Priesthood power. We are grateful for each moment we are given with our children. We know that life is a gift. I am grateful for mothers of faith and eternal perspective that surround me. Thinking of you helped me find my own strength when I needed it. And I am most grateful for my Savior who gives me peace and helps me be still amid the storm. And for every day of good weather He provides.
