I started to be a full time employee since last Monday. I am currently employed by Dunn-Rite, a poultry processing company in Winnipeg. My job title is HACCP Assistant. My main job duty is to assist HACCP Coordinator to ensure the HACCP System is maintained. I am also responsible for records, on-site verification, audits, LoG, GMP, CVS. These are all about the safety and quality assurance and control for food.
In this week, I have learned how to conduct a GMP audit. My boss, the HACCP Coordinator is a very nice guy, he trained me, shared his experience with me, and gave me a lot of opportunity to learn. He done half of the GMP audit with me, and let me do the rest by myself. I made some mistakes throughout the week, because I am not very familiar with the company and the HACCP system. Therefore, I spend most of my time reading documents in the office, while sometime I learned some QA duties like testing and receiving.
Most of the workers working in the plant are Asians. My biggest challenge in my position is the interpersonal skill. As an example, I will do record verification every morning to pin-point minor mistake made by the monitors. I have to be very picky and my eyes have to be sharp to see these mistakes. It is because the information is important, and record keeping is an important part of HACCP system to impose due diligent. Once I verified the record, I am the one who fully responsible for any mistake found by the CFIA( The federal government authority for food inspection in Canada). However, people just don't understand us and unhappy with the minor mistake we found. That is how a interpersonal skill comes into play, we have to respect these workers so that they respect us and we work with the HACCP system all together.
I am happy with my job. It is a challenging and interesting job. According to my boss, he didn't find his job boring, because there is always problem coming up awaiting for his decision, and thus improving his problem solving skill and decision making. I feel lucky to have this job, because the pay is not bad and it is near my house(cycling there for less than 20 mins). I got the job right after I have done my last final exam. ans the position is relatively higher than what I expected. The company also provide training opportunities to upgrade us. I am going for HACCP training next week for 2 days, paid by the company. I am very thankful to my professor who inform me about the job opening and recommended and encouraged me to apply. Hopefully, next week I will get my first salary, and I am going to treat my good friends a nice meal.
Conclusion- Eat Dunn-Rite chicken because I am the one of them who maintain the quality of food. HAHA...
