When I lived in Pittsburgh I would make pumpkin pies for my neighbors around Thanksgiving. They loved the pies. Said they tasted so-ooo good. Truth be told, the secret to the flavor was the fact I didn't use sugar in my recipe. None at all. So what you got was all the pumpkin. And if I do say so myself, the pie was indeed delicious. But we only have it once a year. And still do. For whatever reason I never make it at any other time during the year, except Thanksgiving. So that is that. When I moved here... local restaurants started serving pumpkin pie in September, so that's when I began to enjoy it without the fuss in my kitchen. And although none of it is as good as mine, I like comparing them. Today I had my first taste for this season. For a $1.98 I got a nice slice of pumpkin pie. And I must admit is wasn't bad. YUM! YUM! Do you eat pumpkin pie MORE than once a year?

BICYCLE THE VEHICLE OF WRITERS

Earlier this year, when the weather got warmer I found myself looking at bicycles. I got it in my head that I'd like to buy one. "After all, they are the vehicles of writers and poets." I visualized myself riding around the block with the breeze blowing through my hair, like in the old days. It had been years since I had been on one. But I believed the notion that you never forget how to ride one. I was rusty, that was all. Well that turned out to be false. I forgot to take into consideration my bad knees. I found I couldn't even get on one. The 26 inch was impossible. My legs were just too short to pull up over the bar. So the sales clerk suggested I try a 24 inch. Even then I found it difficult to get on. And when I finally did, keeping my balance on the thing was a struggle. I was doomed to fall. I didn't want to break a leg. I was so frustrated. How could something I once did with ease be so arduous? Upsetting for sure. But common sense prevailed. I had to admit my bicycle riding days were over. I left the bicycles on the rack for someone else to buy and enjoy. Do you ride?

DO YOU LIKE SCARECROWS?

There are not too many fall festivals where I live... so dotting the landscape here are commercially bought items. Handcrafted and locally made is out of the question. So I make do with what is available.

When I decorate for autumn

I usually do it with Halloween,

not Thanksgiving in mind.

At Thanksgiving I'm into Christmas.

Witches, pumpkins, Frankenstein's,

and skeletons are my favorites, this time of year.

In years past I have not particularly

been fond of scarecrows.

But this year I'm giving them another look see.

They are actually kind of cute,

not intense like the characters I love.

HITCHING A RIDE

My daughter rented a little sporty car for her birthday. It was a FIAT. Once upon a time her father/my hubby owned one. It would be a vintage coupe today. And worth a fortune if he had kept it. This modern one had all the creature comforts and then some. And I might add my daughter loved every one of them. The rental place picked this as her ride and she liked test driving this car to see if she might like to buy one. Personally I liked it, too. It was fuel efficient, a plus with today's high gasoline prices. But I have to be honest... the car was kind of small on the inside. Just sitting side by side... our elbows touched... making it kind of awkward to maneuver. Do I LOOK comfortable? And... I was so low to the ground, once I crawled inside... getting back out was a bit of a chore. And when you're my age, with bad knees that's a problem. Otherwise... it was a fun ride and I would recommend this car to those free spirits and adventuresome among us.

A NEW TWIST ON AN OLD THING

PRETZEL BURGERS are all the rage here. Seems EVERYBODY has tried one, but us. The hubby and I had been resisting the fad for any number of reasons. But we finally decided resistance was futile when we got a coupon for half off. So to see what the big deal was all about... we ordered a couple. I would like to say we were pleasantly surprised... but we weren't. We'll concede the pretzel dough used to make the buns was a novel idea. But truth be told they were too salty. We both expected as much. Otherwise... they tasted just like a regular burger. What was all the buzz surrounding them about? Seriously. In our humble opinion, PRETZEL BURGERS are highly overrated. And at $9.99 or $10.99 depending on your toppings, they're kind of expensive too. Have you had one???

LOST DECOR & AUTUMN PUMPKINS

Once Labor Day arrives I'm in the mood for autumn to begin. I like to decorate my house with things that scream the new season. Last year I packed away my fall decor and it somehow got lost. Can't find the stuff anywhere. Frustrated... because my house is bare, and because my favorite store had no decorations for the autumn season out yet, I gave up shopping there until they did. This week they surprised me and finally put some items in the store. My favorite thing was now in abundance.

PUMPKINS.

Of every size, shape and color.

They were everywhere.

My favorites were the mini pumpkins with hats and hair.

And the painted pie pumpkins with toothy grins.

I'm delighted. Now I can decorate.

Let's give autumn a hand. It's the best season ever.

BAIT & TACKLE & TOILETRIES

I have been traveling more since my hubby's new job has him on the road. And that means packing and unpacking suitcases. The zipper on my toiletry case broke so I was left with the chore of finding another case. It was impossible to find one that matched or one that was the proper size. I searched high and low and had just about given up. Then I saw a Shakespeare soft sided fishing tackle box and my problem was solved. Perfect color. PRICE was right. And the perfect size... once I removed the molded plastic tray... for fishing lures inside. I love it. I have discovered, in life there is a solution for everything, if you dare to look outside the box.
