Marathonzies

Ok guys, I talked to Beth about running a marathon, here are some key takeaways:

1.) You need to have been already running consistently for about a year – We’re good there.
2.) She likes the Hal Higdon’s training plan – longest training run is 20 miles.
3.) The training for the Mercer Island half will put us right on par to do a full marathon in June.
4.) It's really just about making sure that we can commit to the looooooong runs.
5.) Marathons are tough but totally doable (she’s thinking about doing another full marathon already).
6.) In Beth’s words: “There’s a Vancouver BC half marathon that would be the perfect supplement to marathon training for June - would definitely fall in during your shorter long runs.”

Just some things to consider as we approach February 28 -- the first Rock 'n' Roll Seattle registration deadline.

Love,
Kath, "The inspiration behind Team Flying V" (just kidding!)

Saturday Run - 8 MI.

I'm not being very creative but it's a run we know! See everyone at 10AM @ Gasworks Park.
For some reason... the map isn't working so you'll just have to click the link :)

Television Debut?

I found another reason we should all do the Rock 'n' Roll Seattle marathon! Apparently the race is televised on Fox Sports, meaning we'll all be running celebrities!!

If you don’t believe me, check the press release.

Also, did you know that the Las Vegas full and ½ marathon is a Rock ‘n’ Roll race too?

Fremont Hill Run

Update: I re-did the map to reflect what we actually ran last night...making it a total of about 2.8 miles....nice work gals!

Hi Girls!

You know you love it!....the one and only Fremont Hill! The .75 mile uphill is a great way to train for our killer 1/2 marathon around Stacey's island in March. The loop is about 1.5 miles so lets try and do it twice. We are meeting at Kath's pad at 7PM and dinner will immediately follow.

Mt. Everest Training Run

Good News!! I found our Mt. Everest training run. Don't worry it rates about a 10.5 on the easy to hard scale... Hard being 10.

I felt bad for missing the 7 mile run yesterday. I had a sinus headache for about 24 hours :( Still trying to get over this cold. But I felt good today and it's beautiful outside so I decided to map a Ballard run....

Good Things:
(1) The views of the Sound are amazing!
(2)It's part of the Burke Gilman Trail for about 3 miles.
(3)When you get to the steep part of the first hill.... you can decide to avoid it (like I did) and run up the 50 stairs instead!
(4)The last part of the run (2 miles) are flat.

Evil Things:
(1) The views end at Golden Gardens and then the hills.... I mean [mt.peaks!] start so you don't have time to enjoy the views.
(2) Seaview Ave./Golden Gardens Dr. are the steepest hills I've ever seen from a runners perspective and there aren't really any side walks.
(3) You think it's over after that part and then you get to 85th....
(4) Map my run so conveniently forgot to elevate Seaview Ave, so I wasn't expecting this hard hill run :(

I'm not going to give up though! I would like to do it again... It is very challenging so we should keep it in mind for a hard hill run.

7 Miler on Mercer Island - 1.17.2009

Ok, Girls. Good thing Coach VL is outta town. She would be unhappy with me for 2 reasons.... A)Procrastinating and waiting until 10:40 the night before the long run to post this. And B) Our "7 mile run" tomorrow is actually only 6.91 according to map my run. Don't worry Lar, I"ll make everyone jog for a minute in place after the run to make up for the .09 miles.

I tried to post the run on here and had some issues...so you guys are just gonna have to be surprised!!! I have no clue what this run is going to be like (I've never run southbound on the island)...looks like some pretty sweet rolling hills so be excited! Hopefully there are sidewalks on all of these streets...otherwise get ready to play real live Frogger!

So here's the info:

Meeting Place: Stacey's Joint on M.I.
Time: 10 am PST
Date: 1.17.2009

See everyone tomorrow! Lar better be running in the great state of Indiana!

Ba-AM -- Who likes their bio!?

Good news, I've taken it upon myself to draft everyone's bios and they are good. These are still in draft form, and include a short questionnaire that I thought might be fun -- you guys have to fill that portion out though.

I don't have access to everyone's profiles so if you approve, you can add it to your "about me" section of your profile. Feel free to edit as you see fit.

Lauren:
LAR?!?! Yes, Lar! Lar is the training nazi in the group and when the team is in “V formation,” you’ll see her leading the pack -- particularly because she’s the only one who sets a pleasant running pace (a position in the “V” that Rach and Katie are NOT allowed to take). She’s likely never flaked out on a run and trains the most diligently out of the group.

When she’s not running – which won’t be very much these days, now that we’re thinking about a full marathon – you can find her hanging out with her dog Stacey (her namesake is indeed “the Stacey” on Team Flying V.), eating a bagel (yep I went there!), yelling at Stoo while playing Rock Band or offering the latest weather report via NOAA – the only accurate source for weather forecasts.

Stacey:
Dr. Stacey is the most patriotic one out of the group and appreciates a good necktie. She’s also been assigned to act as the team doctor, as she partakes in freelance PT when needed.

When Stace isn’t appreciating a good hill run that Lar mapped out, you can find her spending time on “the island,” complementing someone on their tie, driving to south Seattle or listening to Christmas music in her Gamecock t-shirt and hat.

Rach:
Rach, aka the running speed demon, is currently not allowed to lead any training runs or the “flying V” formation per Lar’s ruling. She’s also the organizer of our current training plan, which we’ve coined the BBC regime.

Rach hates large herds of rude runners and in her free time you can find her hanging out with the bums in Ballard, celebrating cat Fridays, talking on “Zack Morris” cell phones and sprinting.

Lindsey:
Linds isn’t a team player and chooses not to run with the team during races (though that means she’s usually got a prime viewing spot at the finish line to watch Katie chalk up a barf). Even though we don’t see Linds during races, she’s always up to jog with the team for long runs on Saturdays.

When Linds isn’t trying to shave off precious minutes on her half marathon time, you can find her brushing up on the “culture” of the local police department, talking to people she doesn’t know (She already has five friends, she doesn’t need six.), acting as the point of contact for safety and fire situations, using one of the following approved statements:
** "No"
** "I’m not sure, let me ask my friends"
** XX (can anyone remember the other things she was allowed to say?)
OR ignoring team phone calls and emails.

"I have 5 friends, I don't need 6."

I'm really glad Vegas Lar started our running blog!! I just wanted to add a little personality to our blog and remind everyone how fun we are aside from running.... Vegas in June!

1/10/09 Long Run

So, on 1/10/09 we had our first official long run of the Mercer Island Half training plan. Coach Rachel put out a great calendar where we each have a long run to map each week. Last Saturday was my turn so I used mapmyrun.com to create a little over 6 mile run which included one really fun hill at the beginning (although I think Stacey, who was sick, would beg to differ) and a steady uphill towards the middle.

Coach Rachel, inventor or the Biagi Boot Camp (BBC) so graciously handed out her first GOLD star to Stacey for sticking with the run even though she was suffering through a cold...way to go Stace. Kath handed out a GOLD star with a sad face to Lauren for her hard run. It should be interesting to see how these GOLD stars prevail in future runs!

I will try to figure out a way to post our training calendar on this site in the coming days.

Welcome Team Flying V!

Hello Team Flying V!

Welcome to the new blog. Since we are all now super serious runners I thought we should get serious about a blog. This way we can track group runs, post motivational articles, quotes, whatever, hand out Gold Stars (KATH). We can also post pictures and race results to share with our friends and family.

I also think this can replace all those emails and reply all's we often do! If you have any suggestions for layout, content, whatever...let me know!

-Coach VL
