Palma

We flew to Palma on Monday evening for a 3-day "mini-MTC" with the Palma zone. Right now the Palma zone is leading the mission in teaching and just about every other category - it is our smallest zone, with only 8 missionaries plus the Thompsons, but they are excited and working hard. We had a wonderful three days with them!

Going to Palma is always a treat, as it is such a lovely city! Most of our free time was spent going to El Corte Ingles to pick up things for the conference - apples, mandarinos, a cable for the printer (which I forgot to pack), a new ink cartridge (ran out of black ink), etc. But we did stop by our favorite hamburger stand and take a little walk around the cathedral and through the town.

Here are a few photos from our visit.

Happy Arizona Day!

Yes, it really has been 25 years.  November 7, 1985, dawned cold and rainy in Detroit, Michigan.  At 5:00 a.m., we left our hotel room near the airport and headed to our plane.  After a layover in Dallas and a visit with Grammie Doll and Daddy Owen, we landed at Sky Harbor.  As we approached Phoenix, the sun looked blazing hot out the airplane window.  There were palm trees.  And mountains.  And swimming pools.  Was it really that hot outside, or did it just seem unusually warm and welcoming to these freezing former midwesterners?  We boarded the hotel shuttle and drove through the city to Scottsdale's Granada Royale.

Here's what I remember about week 1 in Arizona:

Listening to Phil Collins non-stop on the airplane
French toast and apple jacks at the hotel breakfast buffet
Swimming, swimming, swimming
Playing "Mother May I" in the empty living room

Here are a few things I love to think about every now and then:

Sunset over the McDowells
The way the California Poppies in our courtyard blow in the breeze
The rainbows all over the living room from the light streaming in through the front doors
The Saltillo tile everywhere in our house
Thanksgiving at the Arizona Club
Thanksgiving in the Grand Canyon
The saguaros in Christmas lights
Driving with the windows down late at night through desert roads
The ducks playing the piano at Rawhide
Hiking Camelback and Squaw Peak on Saturday mornings
Luminarias on Squaw Peak at Christmas
The smell of orange blossoms all through the city
The Summer of the Anasazi
Riding bikes the day after Christmas
Tarring the roof
When the birds arrive in winter
The mallard ducks in the pool
Beach boys music blaring from the outdoor speakers
Dad doing a cannonball into the pool to announce his arrival home from work
Living without an oven for two years - why cook inside when it's so nice outside?
Swimming at the Mesa Country Club
Hiking the Grand Canyon, obviously, over and over

Happy 25th Arizona Anniversary, everyone!

Halloween 2010

This is Annie ready for church sitting by our owl pumpkin. "Our Owl died," she said.

It was a cold and rainy halloween in SLC, so before the clouds burst we headed to Foothill Village for trick-or-treating at the shops. That was plenty for Annie and Sadie.

Later, Abby went to a friend's house for dinner: brains and eyeballs (spaghetti and meatballs) and some kind of Jell-O that was mixed up with all kinds of things. I can't remember what she called it, but Abby couldn't get over how disgusting it was. "I mean, who likes Jell-O?! There is nothing worse than Jell-O--it's all slimy, and this family LOVES it!" I guess she didn't know it's the state food. Then the mom of her friend made them trick-or-treat in the rain. "After a few houses, we wanted to go back and watch a movie, but her mom kept making us go from house to house!" Abby was really annoyed with the whole evening, and we heard about it for an hour after she got home. In the end, she got a ton of candy which she can trade for cash at her orthodontist's office this week, so she wasn't too upset about that.
