Waco Zoo

Last Saturday, we met Isaac's birthmother at the Waco Zoo.  My mom took Isaac to the Fort Worth Zoo last month while we were on vacation, but this was our first visit to the zoo with Isaac.  We loved watching him mimic all the animals.  Since the zoo, he's constantly been making snake, lion, and monkey sounds--adorable!!

There was also a native Texas area with teepees and mud huts.  Isaac must have liked the acoustics in this teepee, because he was in there a long time shouting and yelling!  See the stick in his hand?  He carried it around the zoo the entire 3 hours we were there!

The crocodiles & otters were his favorite animals to watch.  This slide went through the otter's pool!

My favorite picture of the day!  So thankful for my two boys...soon to be three of them!

Baby Rinn is on the way!

Since we turned in our paperwork to Adoption Network, we've been anxiously waiting for a match.  But, at our homestudy on February 5, our social worker said that most families waiting for a second baby wait much longer than families waiting for a first baby.  He knew of five Texas families who had all been waiting over a year for a second baby.  Even though this wasn't quite the news we were expecting to hear, we kept praying that God would give us peace as we waited.  And, while we were excited about a placement, we also wondered what would happen if our next adoption was as heart wrenching as Isaac's had been.  The verse that God gave us during this time of waiting was Isaiah 46:3-4:

"Listen to Me, O house of Jacob, all you who remain of the house of Israel,
you whom I have upheld since you were conceived and have carried since your birth.
Even to your old age & gray hairs I am He.
I am He Who will sustain you.
I have made you, & I will carry you;
I will sustain you, & I will rescue."

We know that we serve a big God Who is not dictated by timelines or "average wait times."  Even while we were praying that God would sustain us through an unknown time of waiting, He already knew that this last Friday would be a HUGE day for our family!  Our phone rang around 6:00 p.m. with a MATCH!

We're so excited that Isaac's going to be a big brother....

to a precious baby BOY due on June 16 in North Carolina!

Isaac's excited, too!

We had our first talk with this baby's birthmother last night, and it was GREAT!  We both got off the phone and couldn't believe how smoothly it had gone.  She had such a kind, warm voice and already seems like such a sweetheart.  We know that there are a lot of details that have to be taken care of, especially since we'll likely end up staying in North Carolina up to 15 days after his birth.  Dave keeps telling me that working out all the details and the travel involved is the EXCITING part of adoption!  I'm still trying to imagine how we'll drive 20 hours home to Texas with a newborn!  But for now, we're delighting in the fact that there will soon be two boys in our family.  We couldn't be more excited!

Isaac's Getaway

While Dave & I were on our cruise, Isaac had his own little vacation to Grandma Missy & Grandpa Kal's house!  The week didn't start off too well, since my mom had to take Isaac to the doctor for what ended up being a double ear infection.  But, my mom is the best nurse around, and she had Isaac feeling betcxter in no time.  She even took him for his first trip to the Fort Worth Zoo!

Wearing Grandpa Kal's hat & checking out the statues
at Tom Thumb.
There's always something to clean at Grandma's house!

And, Isaac really likes riding in Grandma Missy's car
because her carseat is forward facing!  He loves looking around!

One day, Grandma Missy & Isaac went on a LONG walk to the Trophy Club Starbucks.  I guess my mom is already trying to turn Isaac into a true Scandanavian by getting him to drink black coffee.  Hmmmm....not so sure what he thinks of it.

Though there's not a picture of it, apparently my dad gave Isaac an "epic bath" (according to my mom) that included water all the way up to the top of their Jacuzzi bathtub.  Isaac must have thought he was swimming.  :)
We're so thankful for grandparents who love Isaac as much as we do.

Our Getaway!

Dave & I were able to have a fantastic getaway 2 weeks ago!  We were hoping to squeeze in a vacation before we could possibly have an adoption match.  It was hard to leave Isaac for so many nights, since we've only left him for a weekend a few different times.    But, our pastor frequently talks about how vital it is for your marriage to go on vacation as a couple, and we couldn't agree more!  Getting away with just each other was SO much fun and so refreshing for our marriage.

We flew into Miami on Sunday night and stayed in South Beach.  After a crazy cab ride from the airport to our hotel, we ate dinner at the Clevelander right on Ocean Drive.  South Beach really is just as beautiful as everyone says!

Key West
Our first stop was at Key West. We'd been there one other time, though we both thought it seemed much nicer than our last visit. We were only off of the ship for about an hour--just long enough to eat some frozen, chocolate-covered key lime pie! YUM!

Our favorite day was in Nassau.  I had been there 9 years ago when the Taylor Sounds toured there over spring break.  During that visit, we performed at both Atlantis and many churches around the island & also spent a day volunteering at an orphanage.  One of the churches we performed at during that trip was Trinity Methodist Church.  Dave & I found it downtown on this trip, too.

My driver for the afternoon :)
As soon as we got off the ship in Nassau, we were swarmed by guys working for a company that rented mopeds. Dave asked one of the guys what the rate was for an afternoon, and the guys said, "Curiosity killed the cat...I'll have you two on a bike within 10 minutes." :)  He was right, and it was a blast!  The only nerve-wracking time was when a dump truck full of Bahamians drove by us yelling "Left, left!--Dave realized he was driving on the wrong side of the road!  We spent the afternoon riding all over the western half of the island.  The views were gorgeous along the coast!

We also rode across the bridge to Paradise Island to check out Atlantis.  We were running short on time and had to return the moped soon, so we weren't able to spend too much time there.  Our moped wasn't necessarily the speediest one around....going across this bridge took all the gas it had!

When we got back to the port, the guy who'd rented us the moped offered to take our picture on the one they keep out front to allure tourists.  This one was a little flashier than the one we rode around the island.  (And no, I never drove.)  :)  We headed back to the ship after finding some cans of Goombay Punch in a little grocery in downtown Nassau.  (If you ever need a month's supply of sugar all in one can of pop, this is what you should drink!)  I remembered how good this Bahamian pop was from my trip there last time.

Our last port was Royal Caribbean's private island, CocoCay.  Our ship was tendered quite aways from the island, so everybody rode smaller boats to the island.  It wasn't quite warm enough to lay on the beach, so after lunch we walked the entire length of the island, which at first didn't seem to far but ended up taking us about 2 hours.  The water was so shallow and was definitely the bluest I've ever seen...it was beautiful.  The far end of the island was completely empty--it felt like we were at the end of the world!
Dave discovered that the far end of the island wasn't completely empty, though.  He found the maintenance area of the island (hidden behind a lot of trees and several signs that said "No Guests Allowed"). Of course, there was a backhoe. I guess some things never change, even when you're on vacation. :)

Last time we were on a cruise, we were with a big group of friends, and one of our favorite things was eating dinner together every night.  But, this time we didn't necessarily want to eat dinner with different people, which is what traditionally happens at the main seating times. The point of this cruise was for us to have time together, so we signed up for "freestyle dining."  It worked out great, because we got to eat dinner whenever we wanted to and always at a table just for two.  :)  To say that we loved dinnertime on the cruise is an understatement.  Whenever we couldn't make up our mind on what to order, our waiters would bring one of each.  The good thing is that the portions were small...and the other good thing is that we took the stairs everytime we went to another floor of the ship.

We loved having a chance to get away for some great time together....and it was also fun coming home to this sweet boy!  My mom took this picture when he first saw us at the airport. Love that smile!

Glory Baby

Four years ago today, we miscarried our first baby.  I still think of our first baby often & wonder what our life would be like today with a preschooler.  The loss of our first baby has taken on a different kind of hurt in the past year.  Before Isaac joined our family, I always imagined our first baby as a newborn, and my pain was borne from the fact that I'd never hold that baby in my arms.  But, parenting Isaac from a newborn into a child with his own distinct personality makes me wonder what kind of personality our first baby would have had.  That makes me hurt for him or her even more, because I realize that we've missed out on knowing that baby whom God made completely unique unto himself or herself.

I'm never one to say that the loss of our first baby was "worth" it because of all the good things that happened as a result of our miscarriage and subsequent infertility.  But, I can say that I am thankful for the good God has brought from our pain.  God has flooded our lives with friends that we likely wouldn't be as close to if it weren't for our shared experiences of loss.  I've been privileged to be a part of an incredible group of women at Keystone Church, Threads of Hope, that I wouldn't otherwise be in if it weren't for this hard part of our life.  And we never would have explored adoption, which eventually led us to Isaac.  These blessings in our life are the "good things" that God has grown from very tough times.  And even though I now have a baby in my arms, there are still days that I hurt.  But, God is taking these ashes of my life and making them into something beautiful....He is not done yet, but day by day, He is making all things new.

Glory baby you slipped away as fast as we could say baby…baby..
You were growing, what happened dear?
You disappeared on us baby…baby..

Heaven will hold you before we do
Heaven will keep you safe until we’re home with you…
Until we’re home with you…

But we miss you everyday Miss you in every way
But we know there’s a day when we will hold you, we will hold you
You’ll kiss our tears away when we’re home to stay
Can’t wait for the day when we will see you, we will see you
So baby let sweet Jesus hold you ‘til mom and dad can hold you…
You’ll just have heaven before we do
You’ll just have heaven before we do

Sweet little baby, it’s hard to understand it ‘cause we’re hurting, we are hurting
But there is healing and we know we’re stronger people through the growing
And in knowing that all things work together for our good
And God works His purposes just like He said He would…
Just like He said He would…

Car Wash

It was so beautiful outside this afternoon that we just couldn't stay inside, so we decided to wash the car.  I had no idea what a big hit this would be with Isaac!   He loves both being outside and water, so it was a winning combination!

I gave him his own rag, & he scrubbed a few doors right beside me.  But, all the puddles, the bucket of water, & the hose soon became much more interesting.

Why can't we do this every day, Mom?

By the time we were done, Isaac was completely soaked from head to toe.  His little yellow moccasin shoes had even dyed his socks yellow!  It was starting to get chilly since the sun was going down, so I put Isaac in the shower.  The shower is one of his favorite places in the house right now....whether or not the water's running-- though he prefers it on and will say "please" over and over until he gets water!
I decided the shower was over when Isaac picked up the drain cover and threw a bottle of shampoo down the drain!  Oops!  Since Dave's out of town, I'm supposed to fish around with a coat hangar & see if it's reachable or not.  This is life with a toddler & a husband on the road!  :)
