Tot School: Winter Fun

Today I'm linking up with 1+1+1=1 to share some of the fun winter activities Isaac and I have done over the past few weeks.  I'm not going to lie...last Friday, when our high was 77, I felt a little ridiculous working on one of these snowmen projects with Isaac.  We'd just come inside from a bike ride and were trying to cool off!
Oh well..I'm hoping that we at least get a taste of winter weather here in north Texas like we did last year.  But for now, this is the closest to snow that we're going to get!
I made this winter sensory box using a lot of our Christmas decorations.  Isaac's favorite part was the "nose" (snow) in the bottom of the box, which was just extra fleece I had in my fabric drawer.

Isaac made these snowflakes out of marshmallows, which I found here on this fun blog.  I tried to have him "glue one, then eat one"--but I'm pretty sure he ate 10 for every one he glued onto the paper.  :)

Isaac also did stacking....
and patterning with the different sizes of marshmallows.
(Has anybody else seen these giant marshmallows?  My mom bought them over the holidays to roast s'mores, but we never used them.  After Christmas, she "donated" them to us...and they somehow just don't seem quite right to eat!  I'm not sure why--it might be the size, the texture, or the slightly gray color?  So, I decided we'd use them for crafts instead.)

My friend Holly introduced me to these large tweezers.  I've taken them out occassionally in the past few months and tried to have Isaac work with them, but he couldn't quite get the hang of it.  Last week, though, he was mesmerized by them!  I think this project of tonging the cotton balls and moving them into the egg crate was the quietest he'd been in days.  I love how intent he looks!

Last week Isaac glued cotton balls to make this snowman.  My friend Meghan "interviewed" her kids about the snowmen they made, and I thought I'd try it too.  I'd never done anything like this with Isaac, and I was surprised at his answers!  Here's what he had to say...

What's the snowman's name? Frosty Snowman
What does he eat? Carrots--Frosty Snowman eat the carrots.
Who are his friends? Carson and Santa Claus
Where does he live? Colorado
What does he like to do? Frosty Snowman read books.
What's his favorite color? Red--no, the snowman is red.
What songs does he like to sing? "Holy God Mighty"
Where does he sleep? in a bed
What toys does he like to play with?  toys

We also made a Spice Jar Snowman (idea from here).  (This was a great excuse for me to clean out my spices as I tried to find spice jars to use, too.)  ;)

Stuffing the jars with cotton balls...
stacking...
the finished snowman!

I also ordered several winter books from the library.  Out of all of them, these two were definitely Isaac's favorite.  Millions of Snowflakes has such fun rhyming sentences.  After just a few times of reading it to Isaac, he could fill in most of the rhyming words.  And I love when Isaac does the bear's big sneeze in Bear Snores On...it's adorable!

Make It: Valentine's Day

Lately, I've had a lot of fun finding crafting ideas on Etsy and Pinterest.  I don't have too much time (or skill!) to make a lot of them, but this is one I made this past week.

I didn't have any Valentine's Day decor, and I just thought these were too cute!
Who doesn't love conversation hearts?

(My friend pinned this on Pinterest, but the original idea is from here.)

Celebrating Dave's Birthday

On Saturday morning, we headed to the Fort Worth Zoo to have a day together to celebrate Dave's birthday.  From the moment we pulled up, we knew something was up...there were wagons, dollies, trailers, and families everywhere!  After seeing a lot of girls in Brownie and Girl Scout vests, we realized that it was Girl Scout Cookie pickup day.  Who knew that they held the cookie pickup in the zoo parking lot?!?
Check out this picture...have you ever seen so many boxes of Girl Scout cookies in one place?
The good thing about it being cookie pickup day was that it was also Girl Scout cookie tasting day at the zoo!  We may have passed their tasting table more than once.  ;)  Dave told them that it was the "best exhibit" in the whole zoo--ha!

The "highlight" of our trip to the zoo was visiting the orangutan.  When we first saw him, he was laying down and eating a big pile of fruit.  Then he moved and laid right in front of the window through which we were watching him.  Right then it happened--he threw up all his fruit.  It felt like it was right in front of us--and it was--though the window separated us.  This event has really stuck with Isaac.  It's now been three days since we've been at the zoo, but many, many times a day Isaac says, "Mommy, bear throw up" or "Mommy, bear sick."  (Then he demonstrates how the orangutan--which he calls a bear--threw up.)  It is literally the first thing he says when he wakes up in the morning and from his nap.  We've tried to tell him that the "bear" is probably better now...so now he says, "Mommy, bear threw up.  Bear better?"  It's made for a lot of laughs!

Despite the bear/orangutan incident, we did have a great morning at the zoo!

Dave was driving home yesterday through Bridgeport when another vehicle pulled out in front of him.  Dave saw it in time to brake and swerve.  If he hadn't swerved, he would have hit the other driver right on her driver's door.  As it was, he still hit her vehicle pretty hard on the fender.  She spun completely around and then hit Dave's truck on the passenger side.  Both vehicles ended up on opposite sides of the road in the ditch.  Dave and the other driver were able to get out of their vehicles and were alright, though the ambulance did take the other driver to the hospital via the ambulance as a precaution.  What a birthday!  Dave was pretty shook up last night, but was so thankful that the accident wasn't worse than it was.
This is the second car accident in our family in the past 2 months...after Isaac and I were hit by a drunk driver on November 30 and Dave's accident yesterday, we are so, so grateful for God's protection.

Our little family had a sweet time celebrating Dave's birthday last night.  I made a new recipe--delicious (and super-easy) cream cheese chicken chili that I found on Pinterest.
helping Daddy open his presents

Since Heath bars are Dave's favorite candy, I made this Heath Crunch cake, also found on Pinterest.
(Do you see a pattern here?) ;)
Yum!
I'd forgotten to buy candles for Dave's cake, which really bothered Isaac.  He kept saying "candle, candle?" and then he'd pretend to blow one out.  Dave finally blew out a match, which seemed to pacify Isaac.  :)  And since you can never have too many birthday celebrations, this coming weekend David and I going to try a new Jamaican restaurant in Arlington.  :)

Happy Birthday, David!  I am so happy to be yours.  I couldn't imagine a more patient and loving daddy for Isaac.  I am so excited to see what this next year holds for you and our family!  I love you!

A Colorado Christmas

We flew to Steamboat on Christmas Eve morning and had such a wonderful Christmas with Tim, Susie, and Michael.  After our disaster adventure of having to sleep in our vehicle due to a blizzard, I am so, so happy that we got to fly to Steamboat.  Isaac loved the plane and had so much fun pulling this little suitcase.  He was determined to do it himself and would not let David or me touch it..."I do Isaac's suitcase, Mommy" was what I heard over and over.  :)  He also kept saying, "Go see Nana in 'Rado!"

Isaac helping Nana bake coffee cake on Christmas morning...recently he has started pushing a chair over to the counter whenever I am cooking at home.  He loves to "help!"
I love this picture, even though you can't see the words on the apron.  Isaac is wearing the apron that says "Grandma's Little Taste Tester" that we first bought when we were pregnant.  We saved it and several years later gave it to Susie when we announced that we were adopting!

Opening stockings on Christmas morning...I'd bought Dave's favorite book from childhood, The Tawny Scrawny Lion, and put it in Isaac's stocking.  Dave still had the entire book memorized!
Isaac is wearing his Thomas the Train sunglasses from his stocking, too.  :)
Isaac loved playing with his Uncle Mike!  Susie had pulled out a box of the boys' old Matchbox cars, and Isaac played with them the whole time he was there.  I think he would have been thrilled with just that box of cars for his Christmas present!

Tim read the Christmas story, and then Isaac got to put Baby Jesus in the manger.
Opening presents!  Tim & Susie gave both Isaac and Griffin this fun woodshop.
Isaac's favorite part is the "rill."
Christmas dinner!  Susie made her famous prime rib!

We also had so much fun playing outside in the "nose" (snow, according to Isaac).  Even though Steamboat has an abnormally small amount of snow right now, it was enough for us Texans to enjoy.  :)

Isaac was so brave when we went tubing.  He'd lay down on the tube headfirst and wait for a push.  When he got to the bottom of the hill, he'd roll off and clap for himself!

Papa also took Isaac on his first snowmobile ride on Rabbit Ears Pass.  Isaac's favorite part was walking in the snowmobile tracks, which he called "train tracks."  This picture doesn't show how incredibly beautiful the scenery really is up here!

One night we roasted s'mores outside in the firepit.
Below, we are sitting in an original Steamboat ski lift chair that Tim had hung in the backyard.
Isaac always wanted to check on "puppy dog," Kelly, and loved giving her kisses.  Since we've been home, he's been calling his stuffed dog "Kelly."  :)
This picture makes me laugh!  Isaac had so much fun jumping into the snow and convinced his Nana to jump with him, too!  :)
We also drove down to Loveland one day to visit Grandpa Rinn.  It was great for all of us to see him, since the last time we were together was well over a year ago!

One more sweet picture of Isaac with his Nana...I think his hand position is looking pretty good, don't you?  ;)
Well, I think this wins for longest post ever!  Thank you for such a wonderful Christmas...we can't wait to see you again soon, Papa & Nana!

A Texas Christmas

I feel like I am still catching up from Christmas, but I wanted to share our Christmas memories.
Isaac's birthgrandmother sent a huge box of Christmas presents for him!  She had individually wrapped each gift in the box, and he had so much fun opening each one.  (He also had fun climbing in the box to find more gifts!)

Can you tell Isaac was very excited about Christmas and his gifts this year?  :)

One of the gifts she sent was a collection of miniature Elmo books.  They were perfect for taking on the airplane, too!
We are so thankful that Isaac's birthgrandma continues to stay in touch with us and Isaac.  She is so kind, gracious, and giving.  She always writes him the most touching letters, which we are saving for him to read and keep for his own someday.

I feel like it took me most of December to get all my decorations up!  Next year I am going to start much sooner....maybe November 1st?  ;)

We celebrated Christmas with my mom, dad, and Emily the night before we flew to Colorado.
We were so happy that Emily flew home to Texas for Christmas!  We only got to see her for a day before we flew to Colorado, but we had a great time.  Isaac loves his "Aunt EmEm"...here he had the giggles as she was reading to him.  :)

We opened stockings before eating our Christmas dinner.  This little helicopter (or "hel-i-do" as Isaac says)that Mom-o put in Isaac's stocking was one of his favorites!

Isaac helped everyone open their stockings.
"What do you mean--we already opened everything in your stocking?"  :)

And, after we were done opening stockings, this is what Isaac did.  :)

Christmas dinner!  My mom made my (our!) favorite...her Swedish meatballs!

I love this family!!

Waiting to open presents

We had so much fun sitting around the tree and opening gifts.

Dave was pretty excited about new tools that he got, and Isaac was equally excited about this tent with tunnel!  :)  What a fun Christmas with my family!  After this, we raced home and madly packed for our flight the next morning to Colorado!  I can't wait to share those pictures, either!  :)
