Halloween 2011

Halloween this year was so much fun!  Lyla still doesn't understand the concept of trick-or-treating, but she LOVED her costume and watching all the other kids wearing their costumes.  Ellen's mom made Lyla's Pixie Hollow Fairy outfit, and Ellen made Lyla her trick-or-treat bag.  We were pleasantly surprised that not only did Lyla tolerate her costume, but she loved wearing it!  Saturday night we went to our church's Trunk-or-Treat activity.  Lyla enjoyed mooching off bites of pizza from anyone in the ward who would let her sneak a bite.  When the kids circled around the gym for the costume parade, Lyla joined right in, leaving her mom and dad in the dust - she never looked back!  It was a great people-watching night for Lyla, but it wore her out till it was all said and done.

Our pumpkins for the year came out great!  Ellen made the ghosts and Dustin and Lyla made the owl.  Ellen got her Halloween craft on and made these cool lights that are filled with gummy worms, as well as a pumpkin that had about a hundred suckers sticking out of it (not pictured, but it was freaking awesome!).

Lyla politely waited for her candy.  When people answered the door, she slowly backed away, but she never broke eye contact.  Thankfully, she only grabbed one piece of candy when offered to her and stuck it in her bag.  If they offered her more than one piece, she gave it back to them!  We only went to a few houses - Dustin's parents' neighbors and a few of Dustin's aunts and uncles.

Tonight was as good a night as any to give Lyla her first taste of chocolate.  We unwrapped an Almond Joy for her to try.  She opened her mouth very wide...

...and CHOMPED that candy down!  That Almond Joy was gone in about 10 seconds!  She is her mother's daughter for sure.

Dustin's 28th Birthday

This past Sunday was Dustin's 28th birthday.  Dustin and Ellen celebrated Friday night with dinner at Farmer Brown ( a really cool soul food restaurant that gets their ingredients from local African-American farmers), followed by going on the Chinatown Ghost Tour.  It was really awesome learning about the history of Chinatown and fun facts along with some cool ghost stories.  Sunday evening we headed over to Dustin's parents' house to celebrate all together.  Ellen made a super tasty caramel pecan layer cake that was enjoyed just in time as she dropped it in our garage coming back from the party and it got all over the floor.  Lyla and Ellen got Dustin colored shoe laces for his dress shoes and a bike trailer for Dustin so he can take Lyla along on his bike trips.  Another fantastic birthday celebration and we're so glad to be able to celebrate yet another birthday as our family of three.

Trip to the Pumpkin Patch

This past weekend we took Lyla to the pumpkin patch to pick out her own pumpkin for Halloween. She picked out her own pumpkin! She walked over and sat on a few to test them out, then tried to pick up her favorite.  Here are a few action shots of Lyla in the patch. :)

Lyla wasn't sure about this huge pumpkin.  She appeased us long enough for a few pictures though!

Lyla has a weird new quirk where every time we put her on our shoulders, she likes to try to bend over and look at our faces.  Here she is trying out her new trick with Dustin.

Connected to the pumpkin patch is a little farm with a few farm animals to look at. Lyla is definitely an animal lover, and the animals seemed to be a fan of hers too! They liked to have her pet them - it even looked like she got a smile from the pig! We decided that little farm is the perfect place to take Lyla back to some time in the spring!

Lyla's Library Adventures

Last month, Ellen and Lyla started going to the library.  Ellen is really hoping Lyla becomes a bookworm like she was when she was little.  Lyla has been going to a storytime class at the library for toddlers where they sing and read books.  She loves it!  We are relieved Lyla hasn't ripped up a book yet - she treats them like a treasure, just picking them up and holding them close to her as she walks.  We foresee many, many, many more trips to the library in the future!

Ocean Beach Sand Castle Competition

This weekend we took a family outing to a sand castle building competition in Ocean Beach. It was really neat to see elementary school art programs pair up with architecture and engineering companies to come up with some really awesome and unique sand creations. Here are some of our favorites:

We took advantage of the fact that the competition was at the beach and gave Lyla her very first experience with the ocean. She loved it! She started off walking up and down the boardwalk, then got REALLY excited when she hit the sand (surprisingly, little to no sand ended up in her mouth!), and the joy peaked when Dustin let her dip her feet in the water. She was really sad to leave, but we are sure we'll be back to the beach soon now that we know Lyla may in fact love being a beach bum!
