The Reluctant Mambo

A couple of weeks ago Medium's preschool class performed an end of year show for the parents. This was the second performance they had done, the first being the Christmas show. Before the Christmas show, Medium liked to show us the little dance routine that he was going to do during the show, but this time, on the day of the show, Kim realized that he really had not yet shown us the dance he was going to do. When she asked him to show her the dance he would do, she noticed that he would sort of clam up and clearly did not want to talk about it. She was finally able to coax out of him what the problem was: They were going to do a dance routine where, at the end, they were going to turn around and shake their bottoms at the audience. "The others think it's really funny but I don't think so" he said. It was really adorable - his first moral dilemma.

We finally decided to handle it by telling him that if he doesn't feel like he should do it then he doesn't have to, but also that we don't think there's anything wrong with it and that if he does it during the show we won't be mad at all. We didn't want to completely be dismissive of it, because, even though we don't think that there's anything wrong with what they were going to have the kids do, we like that he is thinking morally for himself. Also, we are encouraged by the fact that this kid who is normally a complete hambone was not just going along with the crowd with regard to something that he thought was wrong. We want to encourage that behavior!

Anyway, the result was hilarious - he sort of did a half turnaround, half shake, which you can see in the video below:

Fighting Childhood Obesity

We fight childhood obesity at our house by keeping the kids on a strict exercise regimen. For instance here I have captured video of them doing jumping jacks.
