Easter 2014

The bad thing about not writing for a few weeks is that I don't know where to start. We've had so much going on that Easter seems like months ago (I know...it really was). Lucky for you, I'll pick up where I last stopped...Easter.

I love Easter. It's what truly gets me out of the post Christmas depression. This year I started decorating the house at the beginning of March. There is just something about spring that puts a bounce in my step. I think it's the longer days, the warmer weather and the fact that I finally get to put a seasonal appropriate wreath on the front door. (Seriously...What kind of wreath does one hang after Christmas?)

I got out all of my old Peter Rabbit books and added them into Hayes's nighttime reading rotation. (What this really means is that I read the first two pages of a book as fast as I can before he closes it and grabs another.)

I researched the prefect recipe and bought all the ingredients to make resurrection rolls with Hayes before I came to my senses and realized that perhaps I was being overly ambitious with Easter (and might need to take a break from Pinterest).

Honestly there really isn't a good way to explain to a twenty-two month old the ultimate sacrifice that Jesus paid for our sins or that a furry rodent sneaks into houses in the middle of the night to hide eggs and leave a basket full of candy and treats. So we decided to keep Easter simple and low key.

Well as simple and low key as two high strung parents with an only child can keep it. I can not confirm or deny that we may have held two or three mock egg hunts in the backyard when we found out that there would be an Easter egg hunt at Harris Early Learning Center. Or had professional pictures made with Hayes and live bunnies. Or stayed up too late the night before Easter and stuffed approximately three dozen plastic eggs with gold fish and jelly beans for one child to go on one Easter egg hunt. That would be crazy! Like I said, this Easter was simple and low key!!

Speaking of bunnies, I'm thinking the Easter Bunny may be a hard sell for Hayes after looking at past pictures. Can you say slightly creepy?!

When I get to heaven, I'm going to have a long talk with mama about the red Easter Bunny. What the heck?!?! My guess is that he was the only option at the Santa Rosa Mall back in 1980.

Last year for Easter, I filled Hayes's basket with darling duck pajamas, Gerber snacks and tons of chocolate candy (which James and I promptly ate). This year I figured it would be the same thing. I loaded up his basket with cheap little toys, sidewalk chalk and my favorite candy. It turned out I underestimated my son's love for sweets. On Easter morning Hayes had no less than three robin's eggs in his mouth before I even poured a cup of coffee!

After church, everybody came over to our house for a low country boil. I know this is not a traditional Easter brunch, but it was fun and the weather was beautiful. The highlight of Hayes's day was getting an elmet (helmet) from James's parents. He's always talking about and touching my dad's motorcycle helmet so getting his own was priceless.

So to wrap this up (I know...thank goodness)...here is a video of our Easter day for my Louisiana Peeps!

(Disclaimer: I'm not sure why we always do gifts in the man room. I'm guessing it's so we can pay our respects to the pig. Also, the videographer has been fired. She spent the whole day trying to wrestle Reese's peanut butter eggs away from a hyped up two year old instead of working on camera quality. And yes...Riley is always within a foot of Hayes. They are two peas in a pod!)
