This weekend was a big weekend for our little family. We took a road trip to Dallas to attend a surprise party for Kyle's Aunt Mary. We left on Thursday and continued festivities with the Boyles/Bethancourt clan (and it is a CLAN of about 30) through Sunday.
Let me just start with the fact that we were supposed to leave our house at 10 AM. How does one small little person add so much luggage? Suffice to say we didn't roll out of Houston until 11:30 and I just about had it with the trip even before it began. The last straw was the whopping head slam I got as I climbed into the Suburban. How did I miss the storage shelf hanging on the wall in the garage? Ouch. Somehow road trips seemed more glamorous when it was just Kyle and me taking off at the drop of hat?? Not that I'm complaining....
The heart of the festivities was at the
Gaylord Texan in Grapevine. That place is like a mini Utopian city. You don't even have to leave the grounds. There are tons of restaurants, cafes, and little places to hang out. John also met all of his third cousins (I think that is the correct familial connection?) There were about 10 kids between the ages of 3-10. I am fairly certain they determined John was some kind of large doll. Either that or a new breed of dog. I've never seen so many kids "pet" and poke a baby so much. John took most of it in stride, as he enjoys people of small stature---to a certain extent.
When John's time with his cousins expired he retreated to his personal suite. Let me describe John's room at the Gaylord: All the hotel rooms had a balcony that faced the large interior atrium of the hotel. I had the bright idea of setting up John's Pack n Play crib out on the balcony so the rest of us in the room wouldn't be forced to retire at 8:30, when John goes to sleep. This plan worked great. John fell asleep quite easily with the white noise of the large fountain to lull him to sleep. Once we were all ready to go to sleep we did bring him inside the room. So, no, I didn't leave my child to sleep out on a hotel balcony.
The birthday surprise worked out well as Aunt Mary received quite a shock when she realized how many people were all there. However she quickly gathered herself and made sure no one was missing school or work on her account! Happy Birthday Aunt Mary! We had a super time with the Boyles'.
