Longing for Summer.....

Although it is still officially Summer the days here in New England have been cool and crisp for a while now. The leaves have already started to turn and our Summer fun is over. The kids and I were just reminiscing about all the fun we had this summer. By far the kids favorite activity was going to the beach. We all, except for Bill perhaps, wish we lived in a beach house where our back yard was a beautiful, white, sandy beach.

The kids favorite beach is Wingaersheek Beach. Bill remembers going to this beach as a kid and it's one of Grandmother's favorite beaches too. In the morning the tide goes out and reveals long sand bars, tide pools, and rocks to explore and climb. The kids love how Wingaersheek Beach seems like two different beaches at low and high tides. One great for adventuring and the other great for swimming and frolicking in the water. The sand is white and the water is crystal clear. We really miss Summer.

These are some of our favorite pictures from Wingaersheek Beach this summer.
This is a view from the last little bit of "dry" land back to the beach as the tide was coming in. We almost waited too long to start our walk back to shore.
Love the little lighthouse in the distance. We snapped this photo right when we made it back in from our walk on the sandbar. The tide came in fast and as you can see there was no dry land at all when we finally reached the beach. It was pretty amazing.

Here's a little crab we found in a tide pool. Exploring the tide pools was Erin's favorite thing and she was really good at discovering little things that the other two overlooked.

The rocks that the kids love to explore. Me, not so much. The boulders are rough in some spots and slimy in other places. My feet were not happy to be bare while climbing all over these babies.

Erin and Sis looking for an easy way down.

Last, but not least, our little Maggie and her mommy, Aunt Staci enjoying some time at Wingaersheek Beach. Ahhhhhh! We love summer.

A New School Year

Sean Patrick is now in preschool a few days a week, and he loves, loves, loves it which was a shock to us all. We registered him in early May and took him to see the school and meet the teachers. He was clingy and cried almost the whole time we were there. Now, 4 months later, he is so excited to go to school, and wishes he could stay longer when it's time to go home. I wish I could attribute this to some stroke of brilliant parenting on our part, but no, I believe it's because his best friend, Natalie, is also in the same class. I did expect tears from him on the first day, but nope. He wouldn't even kiss or hug me goodbye. Turkey. His only concern has been to double check that I indeed would not be staying with him at "his" school. Rude. He's a big boy now. Love it!

Shannon is in third grade this year and loves her teacher. Her best friend, Emma, is also in the same class, so that makes it extra fun and special for Sissy. Since Erin is at a new school this year, Shannon rides the bus alone for the first time ever and thinks that is so cool. The only little bump in the road has been new glasses, but as time passes Shannon realizes more everyday that she can actually see better with glasses. Funny how that works, hahahaha. Thank heavens that no one has made fun of her for wearing glasses or every little reassurance I give her will fade into oblivion....after all what do I know? I am just the mom. Lol. It's all good now though, so two thumbs up for third grade.

A new adventure for Erin as she starts middle school as a fifth grader this year. Wow! Can't believe it. This was a big transition. Erin had tons of questions and most of my answers were, "I don't know." Not exactly what she was hoping for. I at least know that much. Back to school night was a week after school started, so Erin went to the first day of school knowing only her homeroom number and her teacher's name. All I could do was remind her that every other fifth grader was in the same boat, and that I'm sure the school staff knew just what to do with all the students when they arrived at school. The first day was a success. Since then she has signed up to join band, but she hasn't selected an instrument yet. She's making new friends and learning all about life as a middle schooler. The combination lock on her locker gives her daily fits, but she's getting the hang of that too. Can't wait to see what the rest of the school year brings for Erin.

The Deer Encounter

We went to the zoo this past week with some friends. Ever try to get a picture of a group of kids all looking at the camera and who are happy? Well, it rarely works out, but here's the best one of our limited opportunities to snap a pic before the attention span for a photo op ran out.

This was our first visit to Southwick Zoo. I have to admit that I'm not much of a zoo fan. While I like to visit the zoo and watch my kids at the zoo, I do not LOVE zoos. This zoo was very expensive and had okay exhibits. A few really good ones, but mostly not what I expected. And.....and.......they had lots of rides. There was a bounce house, carnival rides for small kids, train rides, a carousel, pony and camel rides, and a ski lift type of ride. Every things costs more money on top of the entrance fee. I like my zoo experience and my carnival experience to be separated, but that's just me.
Sean's favorite exhibit was the Fallow Deer exhibit, and I have to admit that this was pretty cool. The deer are in a large fenced in area and it's like a free range, so to speak. You can buy food and feed the deer and pet them too, if you are stealthy and lucky enough to engage one's attention. The bucks are nervous and skittish, but the does and fawns were more gentle and relaxed. It takes a while for the kids, and adults, to realize that the deer need to approach you rather than you chasing the deer around which only makes them run away.

Sean and Shannon both fed the deer, but Erin didn't want her hands to get dirty. Too funny.

Look the expression on Sean's face telling me all about the deer eating out of his hand. He was very excited.

The sign on the entry door read, "Enter at your own risk." Well, this buck almost ran Sean over because it got scared and Sean was standing between the deer and the deer's chosen escape route. That got my blood pressure up for a bit, but overall it was a great day at the zoo.

Erin's Birthday

Happy Birthday to my favorite 11 year old in the whole wide world, Erin. I can't believe how fast time is passing. One more year of primary at church and off to middle school in the fall. It would be an understatement to say I love that girl.
In honor of her 11th birthday here are 11 things that I love about Erin......in random order, btw.

Erin.......

1. is my great debater (She gets that from her dad.) and most of the time I'm amused by her logic and ability to express herself.
2. loves little kids and is quite good at helping them and entertaining them too.
3. has a great sense of humor and loves a good joke.
4. loves, loves, loves to read....especially at night after she is suppose to be in bed asleep. (Gets that from me. Hahaha!)
5. can find the kid that is left out and include them in games or groups at school.
6. is a great pianist and often practices without reminders.
7. can memorize with very little effort.
8. loves school and learning.
9. has an imagination that is out of this world.
10. has a soft spot for animals of most all kinds and will likely never hunt with her old man because she doesn't have the heart for it.
11. tries really hard to do the right thing and has a good sense of direction when it comes to making good decisions and trying to live a good Christian life with strong morals and values. I often call her my straight arrow although she isn't perfect because well, none of us are perfect. Erin often keeps me on track. She is never short of opinions and often lets me know when I'm off course. Love that girl, and wish this list were longer. I have so much more to say.

Erin wanted a Harry Potter decorations for her birthday including her own small version of Honeydukes, the sweet shoppe from the Harry Potter movies. We bought most of the sweets, but she wanted to make a few here at home.

So, we got a official unofficial Harry Potter recipe book and made lemon drops. Well......errr, the candy turned out perfect but it was hard to drop into little small mouth-sized drops. I finally just drizzled it all over the baking sheet in random globs. The kids loved it even though it looked horrid.

We made chocolate molds in the shapes of brooms, owls, bugs, and frogs. We also made English toffee which we used on top of the cake. It was really fun, but I'm all baked out for a while. Lol.

Erin got her first Playmobil. I thought she was too old for these, but she said, "No way. I want lots of sets of Playmobil." She loves it. Thanks Grandmother and Grandpa!

I didn't realize Playmobil was a build your own house kit, so to speak, but that is exactly what it was. Erin built it all by herself and had a great time doing it too!

Here she is working away. I should have taken a picture of the finished house.

One last picture of Erin starting her Harry Potter Lego set for the Burrow. Lots and lots of building. Lots and lots of wishing for more playmobil and lego sets. Guess we'll have to see what Santa brings. Ha. I didn't take a pic of the finished lego project either. Always something else to do.

Happy Birthday, Erin!

(As a reminder, we are going private. I've received emails and comments from many of you. I didn't publish the comments with your personal email addresses, but I did get them. Scrabble Tile Necklace Pendants

Love these necklace pendants made from scrabble tiles and scrapbook paper....plus a few other things. We made them in YW a while back and as usual my little girls saw what the big girls were doing and wanted to try too. So, off the craft store we went for the girls to choose their own paper. My favorites are the 13th Article of Faith tiles and the orange ones.
The girls gave their teachers a couple as gifts at the end of the school year because when they would wear them to school the teachers and other students wanted to know where to get them. It was fun and inexpensive craft. If you are interested, we found the instructions and supply list at the website make and takes.

13th Article of Faith
We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul—We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things.

The 13 Articles of Faith are thirteen statements describing the fundamental beliefs of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Art Camp

The girls went to art camp at the beginning of summer break. Each went for one week, but in different classes. They both LOVE art and they love their art teacher, who is also their piano teacher. The only complaint was that the class was only for one week.

What a day!

Would you believe me if I told you that I, Jennifer Dermody, exercised, cleaned my room, made my bed, put away all the laundry, read my scriptures, and accomplished random other stuff all before my hubby walked out the door for work this morning? Well, would ya? Believe it or not, it's true. In fact, Bill said to me, "It's the end of the world as I know it." Hahahahaha. Don't worry honey, I'll be sleeping in tomorrow until the kids demand my domestic goddess skills to cook them breakfast.
Wish I could say that I was motivated and that all of my attempts to reset my internal clock have finally payed off, but no. It was a splitting headache at 4:00 AM that is, that my 800mg Ibuprofen couldn't conquer that lead to a 5:00 AM chaser of 2 Excedrin Migraine pills. Goodbye headache. Hello caffeine (from the Excedrine, btw). Good morning with no chance of going back to sleep anytime soon. So, I did what any reasonable person would do, I laced up my sneakers, cranked up the ipod, and walked 3.6 miles to start the day. It was nice. So nice that I hope to never do it again. At least not at 6 AM. Lol.
At any rate and on a more serious note, today was one of those days that I managed to pull off a "Why can't I do this everyday?" kind of a day. Know what I mean? I was ready for the kids when they woke up with my physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual batteries charged. Three square meals prepared and served, veggies included, kids happy with each other and a couple hours of play dates with friends, housework done, summer school work for the kids done, pondering, scripture studying, family home evening lesson and treat......ahhhhh, good day. I'm completely exhausted, but content. Just me, some time with the Lord, and a day spent with my family with minimal contact with anyone but them.
These kinds of days are few and far between, but I have hope and I'm trying to have more of these kinds of days. Realistically, I've got a ways to go.....a long way to go, but if you don't have hope, you don't have anything. Little by little. Step by step. I'll get there eventually.
About a year ago I started making some changes. Priority shifts. It all started when I read this quote from General Conference:

"Our most important and powerful assignments are in the family. They are important because the family has the opportunity at the start of a child's life to put feet firmly on the path home. Parents, brothers and sisters, grandparents, aunts and uncles are made more powerful guides and rescuers by the bonds of love that are the very nature of a family."

Henry B. Eyring, "Help Them on Their Way Home," Ensign, May 2010, 23

That quote changed everything. Not sure why because I've read similar quotes, but this quote at that particular time made me realize my family is everything more so than ever before. More important than friends, callings, social gatherings, whatever, you name it. Don't get me wrong, I have friends that I love dearly that I would give all that I have and all that I am just because I love 'em. I am committed to the gospel of Jesus Christ and I take my church service seriously. I love time at book clubs, church activities, dinners, movies, and having a good time. I don't want to be a hermit, but nothing or no one, literally, comes at the expense of my family.

Tonight we talked about temples. The kids colored a picture after the lesson. Sean colored right over the temple and you can't even see it anymore. He colors all his pictures like this. Turkey. Love that kid. Love the temple. Love that we are sealed together. Love that family of mine.

For the Grandparents......

After talking to the grandparents tonight Erin says we need to put more stuff on the blog. So, here's a few pics of the kids swimming in our pool.

"Just jump, Sean. I'll catch you."

When it comes to taking pics of Erin you have to be fast. I wasn't fast enough this time, and she was not cooperating. This is as good as it gets.....for now. Muahahahaha!

Caged

When you are a 4 year old little boy that insists on being a puppy, your 8 year old sister just might create a way to keep you and your puppy ways contained. Woof. Woof.

Water Balloons

Erin and her friend helped me fill 120 water balloons for youth conference and then as their reward for helping, we filled the remaining 130 balloons to bust at home. It took us 2 hours to fill all the balloons and of course only 5 minutes to bust them all.
It's funny to see what each kid thinks is fun with water balloons. Sean liked to take his and treat it like a little baby. He caressed it, patted it, and took it for a swing. The older girls were all about war and strategy. The younger girls really wanted to be like the big girls, but only wanted to bomb others with the balloons but not get wet themselves. LOL, like that's gonna happen. I say if your big enough to dish it out, then be big enough to take it back otherwise you ought not to get involved. In the end all the kids were wet and happy without any complaints except that the water balloons were all gone.........oh and that I made them clean up the yard of all balloon trash.

A Makeover

When we moved into our house almost 3 years ago our master bedroom was green with painted over wallpaper border, green drapes, and grapevines. Yuck.

We had to put the bed in one certain spot because the previous owner didn't bother to paint one section of the wall. Who does that? Turns out that it really is the best place to put the bed, but I don't like to do something that I feel forced into.

Although green is one of my favorite colors, when it is matched with these colors it can drive one batty.

I had been window shopping for a new bedroom comforter for almost 2 years, and finally my budget matched one of the sets that I liked. Thank you, Macy's! ($400, 20 piece set, marked down to $100....sweet!) So I made the purchase stashed the new stuff in the basement and waited for Bill to leave town to tackle the project. Just for the record, Bill didn't get mad and I wasn't hiding things from him out of fear that he would not approve. I just thought that I am perfectly capable of using a roll of masking tape, sanding, spackling, and driving myself to Home Depot to get everything I need. I can prime and paint. Not only do I know how to do it myself, but I can do it all with three kids underfoot. LOL. Girl power. So, that's what I did....with a few little helpers.

And now this is what it looks like. Love it. The walls are "Country Mist" a pale blue. I'm now in the process of finding decor that I like and that matches the family budget because the walls seem naked, but for now I'm happy.
