The Canoe

A couple weeks before Father's Day this year, Danny told me he wanted to buy a canoe.  He and our boys love to fish.  Within our large family there are a few ponds that are well stocked with fish and apparently, "there are certain parts of the pond we cannot get to because we need a canoe."

Bless his heart!  The man received an early Father's Day gift...Permission (not that he needed it) to search the field and buy himself a canoe, with all the things needed to go along with it.

Weeeell, this was great...for a short time.  My boys were happy, happy, happy!  All the ponds were fished...then Danny mentioned the word...River!

I freaked! Actually, I cried!  You see, instantly all the stories I had heard about people drowning on the James River came rushing back to my mind.  I had a perfect vision of the canoe tipping over and little Harry Jack, or even Dandan, falling out and being carried fast down river and never being seen alive again.

Seriously, this kept me awake the night...the eve...of the "river trip" day.  So, to calm my fears and get back to reality, that eve/morning, I went to Kroger... at 5:45AM.  (Cue Jack Black, in Shallow Hal, saying "Coo Coo, Coo Coo.")

Before
the big trip, I asked Danny to seriously research this idea of taking the boys on the James River.  He did and my fears were slightly calmed.  I was thankful that he chose to take his first river trip on the weekend of the James River Batteau Festival!  There would be numerous boats, canoes and batteau's on the river...in case they needed help.

Saturday, I drove them to the boat ramp, down town, and said good bye...with moist eyes.
Then, after a short stop to TJ Maxx, (just for me to relax) I quickly drove to the pick up spot, 9 miles down river and waited...and waited...and waited!  Finally, a little over 2 hours after drop off, they arrived.  Happy, ALIVE and smiling!

I was smiling too.  After hanging with the "River Rats" for a couple hours at the boat ramp, I realized that this river thing looked really fun and was somewhat safe...at least on this part of the river.  I just might find myself on this river, in the canoe, in the near future!
