Christmas In Burley

This year we spent Christmas in Burley with Eric's parents. We had such a good time amd we were so sad to leave when the weekend was over. Best of all, the boys slept moderately well which is almost unheard of for nights we spend away from their beds. It was a good, good weekend.

Drayke, Rylan, and Jasie at the end of the Day-Before-Christmas treasure hunt. It took us thirty minutes to put it together and it took them ten minutes to reach the end. Next year we will have to work harder to make it more tricky.

Rylan, Jasie, Caleb, Grandma Cheryl, and Adam. All the kids are wearing the pajama pants that Grandma Cheryl made them for Christmas Eve. Caleb and Adam only participate in pictures when there is something in it for them.

Thanksmas

For some reason we always end up at my parents house for Thanksgiving and Eric's parents' home for Christmas. Knowing this, my mother has begun celebrating Thanksmas. We have Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday afternoon and then celebrate Christmas with presents afterwards. It makes for a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. Here are some pictures to show Adam's and Caleb's acitivities while we were there.

Helping Grandpa to fill in a hole.

The sweetest smile.

A shovel just for Adam.

Jumping on the tramp with friend Emily.

Having a moment with Aunt Kate.

Smiling for Uncle Taylor.

Adam's Thanksgiving dinner consisted of fruit snacks and bbq chips. Sometimes I wonder how he keeps growing.

Caleb, of course, ate everything. It is wonderful to have a child who doesn't mind getting messy.

Grandma had a big present for Adam (on the left) that he couldn't wait to open. He left the table partway through dinner so he could go sit by it.

Grandma Bev got Caleb something to hit. He loves it! Such a boy.

My beautiful boys in a box together. The package Adam's present came in was almost as fun as the present itself.

Four Months Later

It’s been four months since my last blog. I guess I sort of subconsciously knew that I would not be blogging during the semester. I barely have time to blow my nose. Let’s see what I can remember from the last four months of Adam and Caleb’s lives. Caleb is eight months old now. He is a very proficient crawler.  He manages to follow me all around the house begging to be picked up.  I’m sure if outsiders saw us they would think he was neglected. In all reality, Caleb just thinks that my every waking moment should be spent staring at him. Adam sort of feels that way too. Perhaps I’m just too enchanting. I will work on that. Caleb is also pulling himself up on things and using them to walk. I don’t imagine it will be too long until I have two runners and not just one. Caleb has five teeth now; something he reminds me of daily during breastfeeding sessions. How pleasant. I try to tell him he better watch it or he will end up drinking formula but he doesn’t believe me. Caleb adores his big brother. If Adam happens to fall asleep on the couch Caleb will pull himself up and start to mess with Adam’s hat and face until he wakes up. You would think that Adam would be angry about his brother waking him up but he just smiles in his sleep and reaches out to grab his brother. It would be the cutest thing ever (and it actually is for a moment) but Adam has no stop button and often ends up squeezing Caleb too tight which makes poor Caleb scream. If I could just freeze those happy moments before the screaming life would be perfect.

Adam is 3 ½ and he talks all the time. He talks to me, he talks to his dad, he talks to Aunt Kate, he talks to Caleb, and, when none of us are listening, he talks to himself.  Thanks to my belief that a full vocabulary should be used when talking to children, Aunt Kate’s consistency in reading books to her nephews, and Adam’s infatuation with Phineas and Ferb, Adam’s vocabulary is huge for a three year old. Not only is it huge but he also generally uses words in their correct context and uses the correct syntax. It is scary sometimes what he says to me. For example, after buzzing irritatingly in my ear for five minutes today, he looked at me and said “That’s a fascinating noise mom.” It is scarier what he says to complete strangers that we meet while running errands. I always cringe when he opens his mouth to speak to others. Who knows what he will say. Adam’s favorite book is Little Bunny Foo Foo. I have a feeling that he sides with the bunny. I’m not quite sure how I feel about that yet. Actually, I feel like I have had the same conversation with Adam that the fairy has with Little Bunny Foo Foo.
"Little funny Adam,
I don’t want to see you,
creeping up behind your brother,
and bopping him on the head.
I’ll give you one more chance,
And then I’ll turn you into a goon!"

He always does it one more time and I always have to put him in his room. Weird. Who would have thought that our lives would have paralleled a story like that. Adam’s new favorite activity is playing Super Mario Bros. with his dad. He doesn’t quite know how to play the game effectively so Eric ends up doing most of the work but Adam sure thinks it’s fun. What a good dad my boys have.

That is the general idea of what has been happening with the Berg Boys. Hopefully I will have a few more weeks before next semester to keep writing.

I'm Surfacing

Hello world! My last final of the semester was yesterday. Life is wonderful again. So very wonderful. I went to bed at ten last night and, besides a five-thirty a.m. feeding for Caleb, slept soundly until seven-thirty. Wooo hoooo!!!! I would like to take a minute to thank everyone who made this semester possible for our family. Thank you U.S. Government and BYU Financial for providing me with grants and scholarships that paid for my tuition. Thank you Adam and Caleb for being flexible and manageable and allowing me to do the majority of my homework. Thank you Amanda Harper for watching my two kids despite already having one yourself and being pregnant as well. You are amazing. Thank you Aunt Kate for moving your whole self to Utah for three months so that my children could have someone always with them who would care for them, teach them, and love them. Thank you for washing my dishes and doing my laundry and picking up after the kids. There is NO POSSIBLE WAY I could have done this without you.  Thank you my sweet husband for staying up late with me while I finished projects, spending long hours at the Family History Library with me and an uncooperative Caleb, and letting me cry on your shoulder when I thought I just couldn’t make it anymore.  You are amazing and I love you.

Just one more semester and a six week internship left. I can do this. We can do this. Go Team Berg! (and Aunt Kate J)

Hello Again

I know I just posted a few days ago but school starts again on Monday and who knows how consistent I will be when I am immersed in my sixteen credit schedule. Also, my kids are so darn cute and the majority of my recent posts have been focused on our family summer activities and not on their individual oddities and accomplishments. So....here we go.

Adam: Adam amazes me every day. He is so smart. We have to be really careful what we do and say at home because he picks everything up in two seconds flat. He also has an amazing memory. He wanted to wear Eric’s belt yesterday morning but Eric had already gone to work. I told him he would need to wait until daddy got home to wear it. As soon as Eric stepped in the door last night Adam asked him for his belt. As I hadn’t heard anything from Adam since that morning about the belt, I had assumed that he had forgotten about it. I am so silly. Adam has also realized that he can climb out of his crib. I think it was about time for this realization. He is three after all. I have to admit that it is weird and slightly disconcerting to have to talk to Adam in the wee hours of the morning when he decides he needs me but it had to happen sometime. I am proud of his accomplishment. Adam also has his own recent oddity. He likes to dress much as one would during the snowy winters of our current state. His father and I find this odd because it is ninety degrees outside and generally around eighty in our house due to a incompetent swamp cooler. He particularly likes to wear his snow jacket and snow boots. He sleeps in them too. He only lets us take them off when he wants us to “make him a boy.” I’m not quite sure what he is while he is wearing his costume but given his vivid imagination it could be anything. What a crack-up.

Caleb: It feels like Caleb has always been with us. He is entertining, darling, and physically draining. I am so grateful for him.aHe is developing just as a four-month-old should. He rolls over, jabbers, and tries to grab whatever is in his reach. Generally that means my hair. He eats all the time and won’t take a bottle. He is going to have a little bit of a shock next week when I go back to school. Thankfully I am only gone for a few hours every day so if he chooses not to eat while I’m gone he will still get what he needs. He also has turned into a scooter. He dragged his chubby body forward a whole foot just to reach a pile of toys that Adam had left earlier. It was so cute to watch him reach his little arms out in victory and pull the whole mass towards him and start to slobber on it (something else he is pretty good at). He is such a person already.

My kids are indeed cuter than your kids and I am so glad to be their mother. And such a humble mother at that.

Trip To California

A week ago Wednesday we flew to California to visit grandpa Todd and grandma Pamela. Flying in and of itself was quite an adventure. Adam had his own seat because he is older than two. This meant that we had a whole row all to ourselves. I thought that this would make the whole trip easy-peasy-nice-and-breezy. However, Adam always seems to have his own ideas about such things. I spent the majority of the flight saying "no, no Adam....sit down Adam....keep your seatbelt on Adam....don't kick her seat Adam....we're almost there Adam." Caleb was no joy either. I thought he would eat the whole way and therefore be a happy boy. However, I failed to remember that choosing to feed Caleb anywhere but in the rocking chair results in loud complaining from him. Where did I get these opinionated, determined children? Despite all this, I was extremely grateful for the opportunity to fly. First of all, I don't know if our decrepit car would have made it to California in the heat. Second of all, no one's sleep schedule was interrupted by the trip. Sleep is worth any price at this point.

Some memories from our trip:

We went to visit great-grandma Bev and great-grandpa Jerry. Adam adored their golf cart and even tried to commandeer it once or twice.

We fed the ducks at the duck pond near their house. Adam was torn between wanting to feed them and wanting to scatter them all by running through the flock screaming.

Both my boys just love their great-grandma Bev. I think she is pretty special too.

Adam loves the trampoline. He had a hard time finding someone who loved it as much as he did poor thing.

Grandpa Todd was a good sport on several occasions.

We went to California to celebrate the marriage of Uncle Kevin and Aunt Kim with grandma Pamela's extended family. The newlyweds are very happy.

Adam had fun with the friends and cousins from his age group. He had many discussions with Emily about who should be first up the ladder.

He also learned how to play "mummy." I'm not quite sure what the goal of mummy is but I know everyone was quiet for a while which was nice.

I was able to visit my long-time friend Jodie during our visit. Her Emily and my Adam are only weeks apart. They are finally beginning to play together like people. That was fun to watch.

Her Ethan and my Caleb are only a month apart although Ethan is so big it is hard to tell who is older.

Eric spent some of his time in California helping grandpa Todd with the kitchen remodel. There was alot of standing around and planning before they got started but all of the upper cupboards were in before we left.

Adam thought it was his job to test all of grandpa Todd's tools. Scary isn't it.

And so we returned without incident. We had a wonderful time and Adam is already begging to go back. In a perfect world all of his grandparents would live only minutes away. Maybe one day....

A Reception

The wedding was followed by a reception at the Bride's church building. There was the traditional standing under the archway, cutting of the cake, throwing of the boquet and garter, and dancing. The decorations in the bride's chosen purple and white were lovely, the live singing was wonderful, and the firends and family were chatty. Life was wonderful and exciting.
