A Bad Patch
Amy awoke to the siren of a passing emergency vehicle. She could tell it was not yet night, even before she looked at the clock on the bedside table, as there was still daylight peering in from between the cracks of the drawn shades. The clock told her that it was six thirty. She lifted herself up and out of bed. It was the second time she’d risen today, but after leaving a message on her boss’ voicemail that morning, she felt no compulsion to use her personal day for anything else other than self-pity. Amy stumbled to the bathroom. Her head felt heavy, even though she’d spent most of her last few waking hours in tears.
