Moving back?

For a while I've had the thought of moving back to the Midwest in my mind. I thought perhaps after I started a family my husband and I could move back to the Twin Cities area and raise our kids.

But then I read an article on StarTribune.com that has me focusing on why we shouldn't move back.

"Lakeville retools plan to attract more diverse student body"

Actually, not so much the article but the comments at the end (and the fact that six of six readers liked the following comment):

Somebody needs to be SLAPPED !!

"State law requires adjoining districts with a gap of more than 20 percentage points to come up with more ways to bring students together voluntarily and gives them money to do it." That's ridiculous. Spreading ESL and immigrant children out to other districts just drags down THEIR educational systems as well, the BES (Burnsville-Eagan-Savage) is bad enough as it is. The entire educational system is setting itself to the lowest common denominator, and our children's quality of education is becoming a joke, all for the sake of "diversity" - BAH !! SEND THEM BACK !!

I think the only person who needs to be slapped is happy2oblige. How ignorant and racist to assume that diversity means only ESL and immigrant children.

Having grown up in the south suburbs of the TC and attending schools in which I was often the only minority student in many of my classes, I applaud the state law that seeks to create diversity in the schools. If anything, I recall many of the other minority students and I were in the advanced classes and certainly NOT dragging down the education of other students or the system. We tended to be overachievers because we felt like we had to prove we were as good as or better and smarter than the white kids who teased and bullied us.

And regarding the send them back statement, as an transracial, international adoptee (one of more than 10,000 in Minnesota), I had no choice and if I had a choice, I would have gladly stayed with my birth mother and family. So to happy2oblige, I say, SHUT THE F*$% UP!!

I don't understand these suburban white parents who want to surround their white kids with other white kids, limiting their exposure to other races and cultures. What happens when these kids grow up, move out of state, travel outside of the Midwest, or move to bigger cities? Realize that their parents are racist, prejudiced bigots? Realize that the world is not all full of white people? Let's hope so.

After reading the article and comments, I'm glad I live in the Bay Area. According to Wikipedia:

Like many larger U.S. cities, San Francisco is a minority-majority city, as non-Hispanic whites comprise less than half of the population. As of 2007, the Census Bureau estimated that 45.0 percent of the population was non-Hispanic white. Asian Americans make up 33.1% of the population; Chinese Americans constitute the largest single ethnic group in San Francisco at about a fifth of the population. Hispanics of any race make up 14.0% of the population.

I'm glad I live in an area where many of the preschools and elementary schools are bilingual, whether it's English and Mandarin or English and Spanish. I think the students from this area are going to have an enormous advantage in education, work, and life compared to those whose parents post comments such as the one above.

Honeydogs

When I lived in Minneapolis, I would most likely be found on the weekends at the Lounge hanging out with my girlfriends, chatting with the cute bartender, and downing some Mandarin Cosmos. Or, I'd drag my friends to First Avenue or the 400 Bar or any other local (sometimes not so local) venue where the Honeydogs were playing.

I'm now a recovering groupie and a San Francisco resident, but I still get excited when the band sends out an e-mail to its fan list.

I opened the band's most recent e-mail to read that a new CD, "Sunshine Committee," is coming out (release date of March 10) -- with a CD release show at First Avenue on March 13. Damn, wish I could be there!

The group included a link to its MySpace page, and I discovered the band now has an Asian band member -- Steven Kung! (Yes, it's been a long time since I've seen the Honeydogs live. Too long.)

What a dumb ass

People has a quote from Cyrus at the Oscars ...

"She's beautiful, and I love her, and she can like, adopt me if she wants to."
– Miley Cyrus, on Best Actress nominee Angelina Jolie, to E! host Ryan Seacrest

Why? So she can make fun of Jolie's two Asian kids?

Korean-American actors on TV

I caught Sung Kang on "Monk" last Friday in the "Mr. Monk on wheels" episode. Just a small part ... of a Japanese guy. Sigh.

I've also been watching "The Mentalist," which ripped off the show idea from "Psych" (one of my favorite shows, hilarious '80s references). I noticed that Korean-American actor Tim Kang, who plays agent Kendall Cho and is a native of San Francisco, has really bulked up. Saw him in a recent episode wearing a short-sleeved shirt and thought, Wow! You may have noticed him in Cingular commercials if you live in the Bay Area.

Can't a girl take a few pictures?

Pictures of her dad's big day? Geesh!

Malia Obama: First Daughter Is Picture-Perfect

Malia could probably write better than the writer of this article: "Would she write a forward?"

Hello!? Foreword!

Asians in the White House

OK, well, perhaps not living in the White House, but I'm assuming they'll be visiting frequently ...

Nice to see President (yeah, that's right) Barack Obama's sister Maya Soetoro-Ng, her husband Konrad Ng and daughter Suhaila at the inaugural celebration at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington on Sunday, January 18.

Michelle Obama wears gown by Asian designer

Designer Had No Idea Michelle Obama Would Wear His Inaugural Gown

Well, wouldn't say he had no idea since he was asked to provide a gown for her consideration. But good to see an Asian designer being recognized.

"More than a dozen families filed a lawsuit Tuesday challenging a new Arkansas law banning unmarried couples living together from becoming foster or adoptive parents.

"The Arkansas chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union filed the lawsuit on behalf of the families in Pulaski County Circuit Court seeking to overturn Act 1, which was approved by voters in last month's general election."

2009: Dual citizenship for Korean adoptees?

Ministry paves way to allow dual citizenship

"In reporting its 2009 plans to President Lee Myung-bak yesterday, the ministry said it wants to allow dual citizenship for foreign-born ethnic Koreans or Koreans who were adopted by foreign families at a young age."

However ...

"Male applicants would need to complete the two-year mandatory military service that is required of all Korean men."

Kick their asses!

I hope the Spanish team gets their asses kicked at the Olympics ...

"Spain basketball team pictured in controversial pose"

Way to show your true colors on the international scene, boys.

And whoever approved this pose and photo oughta be bitch slapped.

Updated 8/13/08:

More on the Spanish team's photo ...

"Spanish player defends controversial photo"

Point guard Jose Manuel Calderon said the team was responding to a request from the photographer.

"We felt it was something appropriate, and that it would be interpreted as an affectionate gesture," Calderon, who plays for NBA's Toronto Raptors, wrote on his ElMundo.es blog."

"The Spanish women's basketball team also posed for photo doing the same thing, and four members of Argentina's women's Olympic football team were shown making similar faces in a photograph published last week."

You can see the photo of the women's team here (and check out the black player in the center, smiling as big as the rest of them).

The basketball federation had just signed a four-year contract extension with Chinese clothing brand Li Ning shortly after arriving in the Chinese capital for the games.

"We have great respect for the far East and its people, some of my best friends in Toronto are originally Chinese, including one of our sponsors, the brand Li Ning," Calderon wrote. "Whoever wants to interpret it differently is completely confusing it."

Frank Zhang, Li Ning's director of government and public affairs, played down the incident.

"We don't think this is an insulting gesture to the Chinese," Zhang said. "In fact, the gesture shows that the Spanish team is so humorous, relaxing and cute. They sat around a dragon pattern, which we think showed respect to the Chinese.

Cute?! No. Ignorant, insensitive, and racist? Yes.

I'm glad to see the AP covering this story, and my local TV station mentioned this photo in its late-night broadcast last night. But nothing will probably happen as a result. You can bet that if the team had made some racist comment about African-American players or other black athletes, we'd be hearing more. Instead, we hear how "cute" and "humorous" the team is. The ones who are confused are these ignorant, clueless assholes.

And what is up with Zhang's comments? Guess the company would rather be insulted than lose a lucrative contract. Oh, that's right, it doesn't think the gesture was offensive.

Do the Chinese not find this as offensive as Asian Americans? Probably not since they didn't grow up in white communities with other kids taunting and teasing them with that gesture.
