Shhhh....

He's all tuckered out from his playdate with Luke. They actually did play together...if you count laying on the floor, side-by-side, quasi-looking at one another, playing. I almost got them to hold hands, too!

Cramping Our Styles

Kevin gets to work from home for two weeks, which we are super excited about. It's nice having him home in the evenings with Ethan and me. It's also nice not going to sleep in a big bed by myself. Oh, and let's not forget how nice it is to get out and run errands or go to a Girl's Night Out with my mommy friends, while Kevin watches Ethan.

What has not been pleasant is sharing the same space during the day. Kevin likes to work in the family room, which is where Ethan and I locate ourselves during the day. Everyone's stuff is everywhere, and though we pick up several times throughout the day, it somehow manages to get messy again ten minutes later. Also, since Kevin is visible, I keep expecting him to help me, which he can't do since he's working. It also bothers me that while he's working, he's also watching what he wants to watch on TV, with little regard for my preferences, reading magazines/catalogs, browsing the internet, etc. I try to tiptoe around him, but I'm constantly talking to Ethan, which I know probably sounds annoying, and must distract him. I also can't get anything done, because I try not to let Ethan fuss for fear that it will distract/annoy Kevin, so I'm always dropping what I'm doing to attend to the baby, rather than just letting him fuss a little while I finish up.

I've been trying to convince Kevin to go use the office/guest room upstairs, but it didn't work until yesterday. {In Kevin's opinion, the desk is too small, and while there is a nice flat screen TV and comfy couch, there is no coffee table on which he can place his laptop and other necessary items.} I think we just got on each others' nerves one too many times. He went out this morning and got the answer to our problems...

Meet out new coffee table {marriage counselor}. Thank you, Target, for coming to our rescue once again! So far, this new arrangement seems to be working out for all parties involved.

A Weekend of Celebrations

Phew! We had a jam-packed weekend, with lots to celebrate!

On Friday, we got all dressed up {in a hand-knit sweater from a talented Hungarian friend, and some adorable loafers which he wore for 2 seconds}, and headed to Safta and Saba's house for another Chanukah get together. We had a yummy dinner, including Safta's homemade latkes. Ethan got some gift certificates to Gymboree Play & Music, which we will use in the new year. {He's really getting into music and loves kicking his legs to different tunes.}

On Saturday, we drove to Cincinnati to celebrate Momma's birthday, which happens to be on Christmas day. We watched the Bengals game, and Ethan and Daddy showed their support by sporting their team gear. We got to see Cousins Will and Eli {shown below, conducting his trains}, and lots of aunts, uncles, and cousins. Ethan especially enjoyed taking a snooze on Pops!

We got to bring Tobi home from the Pinsky Canine Recovery Center {my in-laws' house}, and the vet said he's doing quite well. He's got tons more physical therapy exercises to do, which are a pain, but he's on the mend!

One of our biggest celebrations was Ethan's first official "Sleep Through the Night"! He slept 8.5 hours! He hasn't slept that long since, but he's been doing 7.5 - 8 hour stretches for the last four nights, which we are so very grateful for. He's a big boy!

Happy 2-Month Birthday, Ethan!

Wow, how time flies! My little buddy is two-months old today! We've watched him grow and change so much already...each day {and night} brings new surprises.

Stats: Ethan weighed in at 11lbs, 2.5oz. That's about a THREE pound weight gain in one month! I'm super thrilled, since we are totally off formula. I guess he likes my cooking! He is 23.5 inches long, and his head circumference was 38...cm., I assume.

Likes: Ethan's favorite thing to do these days is to play on his play gym. He loves looking at the lights, listening to the music, and kicking his legs. I even made up a song to one of the tunes that the play gym plays, and he smiles and kicks when I sing it! He has developed a love for anything that swings, like pendulum clocks, and the little Hungry Caterpillar and lion hanging from his car seat handle. He loves observing all the neat things around him. Ethan especially enjoys staring at fans, lights, and the television...but we try not to let him watch it! He still LOVES his baths, but not the cold, getting out part. His favorite place to nap is his swing, and he must have his Sleep Sheep! Oh yeah, and he'll only sleep when he's swaddled.

Dislikes: Ethan is starting to get very fussy during tummy time. He can handle it for 2-3 minutes, and then he's done. He also does not enjoy napping in his crib, even though he sleeps there every single night. Ethan is starting to cry every time he goes in his car seat, and refuses to sleep in it unless it is moving. It makes for some interesting trips! He also HATES being too hot, which is not a problem this winter.

Tricks: Ethan has started social smiling and cooing. When he flashes one of his gummy smiles, it makes my heart melt. I'm in big trouble, aren't I? Ethan is starting to sleep for a 5-6.5 hour stretch at night...hey...that counts as a trick for this mama! Once he mimicked sounds I was making, but he hasn't done that since. Oh, and this boy is a champ at holding his head up all on his own! Ethan's best "trick" {according to me} is his new-found efficiency at breastfeeding, as evidenced by his recent weight gain.

Mom: I've been a lot more comfortable doing things by myself. So far, I've only taken one shower without someone else being home to watch Ethan, but it's a start. I'm less anxious about bathing him by myself and going out by myself with him. Breastfeeding is starting to get easier, and it's not nearly as uncomfortable as it used to be. In fact, I prefer breastfeeding him to bottle-feeding pumped milk, even when we're at someone else's house. I still haven't breastfed in public yet, but there's still time for that, I'm sure.

I think this is when things start to get really exciting with a little, as they begin to develop new skills and different facets of their personalities. I'm truly enjoying getting to know my baby, and feel so fortunate to be a stay-at-home mom during these important developmental months, so I can see all of his "firsts". I can't wait to see what month three has in store for us!

2011 ~ Our Year in Review

I saw this type of post on another blog I enjoy reading, called Dear Baby, and thought it was a great idea! I hope you enjoy reminiscing as much as I did!

January: To kick off the new year, I decided to start a book club. I'm happy to say, that almost three babies later (two Ethans and a soon-to-be A.J.), we are still going strong, and coming up on our one year anniversary!
February: I spilled coffee all over my old laptop and got my new MacBook Pro. That little act of clumsiness, I found out later, could be attributed to my {then unknown} pregnancy!

March: The Fox Hill Elementary Math Bowl team won their competition! These kids sure did make their coach proud!

April: Kevin and I, along with my brother, Yuval, and his girlfriend, Michelle, took a trip to San Diego. Among our favorite outings was a visit to Sea World!

May: It was finally made Facebook and Blog official...we were expecting our little bundle of joy!

June: We had a wonderful time {except for the flight delays and late luggage arrival} in Myrtle Beach with our family. Even Cousin Will and Ethan are in this picture!

July: We spent time with lots of friends this summer. Here we are on our friends, Andy and Allison's, boat on Geist Reservoir on the Fourth of July. It's one of our favorite things to do on those hot Indiana summer days!

August: It was so hard to pick a picture for this month, since there were a lot of things that happened. My favorite, however, was the birth of our nephew, Will. He has added new flavor to our family, with his big, beautiful smile, and easygoing nature. (Ethan has a few things to learn from him!)

September: During this month, we finally completed Ethan's nursery. It's a good thing, too, since he decided to make an early entrance in our lives...see next month!

October: Ethan Eric Pinsky entered our lives at 8:04am on October 22nd. He weighed in at 6lbs., 7oz. and 20 inches long. He is our greatest blessing this year.

November: We had a lot to be thankful for this year, like the Little Turkey above. This month, we were also thankful that I was able to take time off from work to start my stint as a stay-at-home mommy. We were very thankful for friends and family who generously gave their time to help us as we navigated the choppy waters of new parenthood!

December: Oh, Tobi! We were hoping to end this year with a bang, and boy, did we! Our dog-baby had surgery on his right leg (left leg to be operated on in early 2012), and began his recovery, which is going so well! In a few months, he'll be back to his old, mischievous self!

Happy Chanukah!

~ Love, Ethan

Off to Play Group We Go!

Ethan slept for 5.5 hours, but then would not go back down for longer than 30 minutes at a time. That meant I got little to no sleep between 5:30am and 8am, when I finally gave up on getting the little one to go down for another long stretch.

I am very proud of myself, though.

We had plans to go to a play group at 11am today. Normally, I would have nixed our plans and stayed home with the cranky, inconsolable baby. Not today. I decided we'd go anyway. He did so well! He napped before we went and through the car ride there, ate when he woke up, played a little, and then went back down for another nap.

I think it was nice for both of us to be around other babies and moms and get out of the house. Sometimes, you just want to be with people who know how it feels when you're having a rough morning! If we would have stayed home, I think I might have gone a little nutty!

Now...if only I could get him to nap in his crib!!

Oh...Hello!

I am so blessed to get to look at this face everyday. As tough as motherhood can be sometimes (especially on little sleep), I melt every time I look into those beautiful brown eyes. Sometimes, I ask Kevin, "How can he possibly be this adorable???"

A Very Pinsky Chanukah

This weekend, we headed to Cincinnati for some holiday fun! Will and Ethan celebrated their first Chanukah, and it was one for the books! My mother-in-law made a delicious meal, which we devoured...especially the latkes! We all enjoyed opening presents, but the best part was watching Eli open his. This is the first year that he understood what was happening, and had a great time tearing into each new present.

He slept through the whole thing!
The next day, we went to Aunt Karen and Uncle Mike's house for a holiday brunch, where we also participated in a White Elephant Gift Exchange. I ended up with some Bobby Flay tapas plates and dip server, and Kevin got some cutting boards (they are WAY cooler than they sound).

We also got some cute photo opportunities of the boys together.

I couldn't help myself with this one!

Blog Makeover

You may have noticed that our blog has a new look. I decided it was time I changed the old blog, which was more representative of Kevin and I as a newlywed couple, to one that displayed our new family of three + doggie.

I found a new background and header, and used Picnik to customize it. I also used Picnik to edit the pictures in my sidebar. My wonderful and patient husband helped me with the HTML code, so I could change the font to a fancy one and reduce the spacing in the posts from double-space to single-space, among other things.

I'm now in love with the look of my new blog, and think it's the perfect medium to share all of our adventures as a new family!

Obsessed with Peppermint!

'Tis the season...for everything peppermint! This winter, I've had a slight obsession with peppermint and chocolate in cookie form. I've always loved York Peppermint Patties and Andes Mints, but lately, those delicious treats are simply not enough.

Fortunately for me, I attended an annual holiday cookie exchange, where I got some new recipes for several kinds of peppermint cookies. Also, Pinterest has a ton of ideas as well, like the ones we made last night, called Andes Mint Cookies! Easiest.Recipe.Ever.

Ingredients:
  • 1 box Devil's Food Cake mix
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup oil
  • 1 box Andes Mints
    Directions:
In a large bowl, combine Devil's Food Cake mix, eggs, and oil. Mix until well incorporated. Drop by spoonfuls onto a cookie sheet (should make 24-28 cookies). Bake at 350 degrees for 6-9 minutes. (Cookies should be soft to the touch when you take them out.) While they are still hot, place one Andes mint on each cookie. As they melt, spread the mints over the top of each cookie, like you would frosting. Allow them to set.

For an extra minty touch, I added Andes Crunch Chocolate Pieces into the batter...I can't help myself!

    The Preppy Look

Ethan decided to wear his sweater vest and jeans to Beth-El Zedeck's Early Childhood Center Chanukah Show. He looked so handsome, I think he'll have to repeat this ensemble before he outgrows it!

    What Happened to My Baby??

So, I had a blog post all ready to go regarding my new "normal", meaning how I've recently felt like I'm getting in the groove of motherhood. I wrote that I knew that as soon as I got into my groove, things would change...and it seems I was right...at least for one night.

Ethan slept for six.hours.straight last night. I didn't, since I was up for the last hour wondering, what happened to my baby? You can't help but think something is wrong! I couldn't believe it. Then, after his feeding, he went right back down. I didn't even change him since he was so peaceful! I bet he would have slept another four hours, but I had to wake him up after close to three because we had plans.

It was also the first night we did not need to use formula. I'd been trying to wean Ethan from the formula, going from two bottles a night to one, and it seems we are thisclose to doing it!

Continuing with the "What happened to my baby?" theme, we went to my mom's Chanukah show at the temple's pre-school. Ethan fussed a little in the car on the way there, fell asleep, and aside from a little bit of fussing here and there, slept through the whole show AND the meet-and-greet afterwards. He hasn't slept that long in his carseat since he was around 3 weeks old! He cried for 10 minutes on the ride home, then stayed awake and observed things around him for the rest of the way...also something he's not done before!

He's been cooing and smiling A LOT today, too! Then, when he got fussy this afternoon, we swaddled him, put him in his swing while he was awake but drowsy, and he fell asleep! For the last week, he would only fall asleep for naps if he was being held, which caused me to once again think, what happened to my baby??

I'm trying to remember everything I did yesterday so I can repeat it today...you know, so he sleeps for a while again tonight, but I'm not sure that is necessary. Someone at the temple told me that once they sleep for 6-7 hours a few times, it becomes routine for them. Also, our pediatrician told us that when they hit 10-11 pounds (our unofficial weight check this week had him weighing in at 10lbs., 3oz.), they really do increase their night sleep. Plus, according to the author of Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child, once a child is six weeks past his/her due date, they are able to sleep for longer stretches at night. Tomorrow will be exactly six weeks past his due date. Here's hoping those tidbits are true!!

    Hitting the Gym

Lately, Ethan has been more and more alert during his awake periods. He studies all the things around him. His favorite thing to focus on is a clock in our family room, which has a swinging pendulum that all but hypnotizes him. We decided it was time to order a play gym for our little observer.

We chose the Fisher-Price Melodies & Lights Deluxe Gym, as it had the best reviews on Amazon. We got our first one last week, but had to return it. As I was putting it together, I could not locate the slots for the legs to go in. I felt around a billion times, googled it, and searched the Fisher-Price website. I thought I was crazy for not finding these slots! Turns out our mat was defective, and there were no slots.

We just got our second gym today, put it together, and tested it out with Ethan. He LOVED it! He only played on it for 10 minutes, but as he grows, I know he'll enjoy spending more time on it. The best part is that he can do tummy time on it, too, because we can attach the little hanging toys to fabric loops on the mat, and he can play with them that way as well.

    Turkey Leg

Tobi is back home after his first TTA (Tibial Tuberosity Advancement) surgery. He is recovering very nicely. Kevin is home this week, so I don't have to take care of a dependent dog and baby. We are using the "man-to-man coverage" method - I get the baby, Kevin gets the dog.

Tobi gets three different pills, two twice a day, and one three times as day. He has special exercises that Kevin has to do with him, gets cryotherapy (READ: icepacks) three times a day, and has to be taken out on a short leash. He must also be carried up the stairs. I don't know how I'd get all that done, and take care of Ethan by myself!

Tobi is walking nicely on his leg, and using it to support some weight. He also never lost his appetite, which the doctor said he might do...shocker.

Here's a picture of my little turkey-legged dog. I was shocked when I first saw his shaved leg. I don't know why it never occurred to me that they would shave him, but boy was I surprised when he rounded the corner and I saw my bald dog!

    Hoosier Pride

My brother, Yuval, is a guy who speaks up for what he believes in. He stands by his principles, even though at times, he seems pretty rigid. He won't patronize Starbucks, as he feels that it has taken away business from "Mom 'n Pop" coffee shops. Though my parents (and I) usually support Democratic candidates, with more liberal ideas, he is not afraid to share his conservative, sometimes Republican, points of view...even though he knows they'll be met with opposition. He is always the one to play "devil's advocate" whenever I need him to just be on my side...mostly because he is my younger brother, and delights in annoying me.

Therefore, I was not surprised when I found out that Yuval had e-mailed a Chicago-based political journalist regarding his blog post this past Monday. In this post, he calls Indianapolis, "India-no-place", and all but says that it is a horrible place for the Mercantile Exhcange to relocate, because it is void of any cultural experiences, and educated people, and they would be hard pressed to find people to move to this type of city. He states that it's only claim to fame is "taking up space between Chicago and Cincinnati". You can read his post here.

My brother, while not a native Hoosier, is a proud Indiana citizen. He responded to the journalist, Ted McClelland, via e-mail, and in the interest of fair time, McClelland chose to publish it on his blog yesterday. While he didn't really agree with any of the arguments Yuval presented, he did say that it was an intelligent response. So I guess there are educated people here in the Nowheres-ville. Here is his response:
When I was a student at Indiana University, attitudes like yours were why students from Chicago were disliked by others. Chicago is not the only city in the world where it is possible to do business, raise a family, and spend one's evenings out.
You claim that Indianapolis merely takes up space between Chicago and Cincinnati. I sure hope people can find our fair city when they come in for the Super Bowl in a couple months. When was the last time Chicago hosted a Super Bowl, again? I get all the years confused. Somehow every May our little “space between Chicago and Cincinnati” manages to host the world's largest one day sporting event, as well as one of NASCAR's biggest events in July. The NCAA seems to think Indianapolis is a fine place to stage Final Fours every few years, as well as maintain Indianapolis as the permanent backup site in case of emergency. I suppose you forgot that Indianapolis was the city the beat out your beloved Chicago for the Big Ten Football Championship Game as well.
It isn't all about sports though. Indianapolis boasts a full-time professional opera company and symphony. We are home to several professional, renowned theaters and we also have many national touring acts come through the area to play one of our concert halls, arenas or amphitheaters. We have a long and wonderful history with the jazz music world and boast several great clubs where one can hear local and national jazz musicians, as well as hosting the Indy Jazz Festival each summer. People of many different nationalities host their own festivals showcasing their unique culture, music, food, etc. every year. Our city is home to the world’s largest Children's Museum, as well as a large Art Museum. Our zoo just announced a $30,000,000 fundraising project to build a world class orangutan exhibit. We may not be Chicago, but your blog implies a certain dearth of culture here in Indianapolis that simply doesn’t exist.
You seem to think that Indianapolis is no place for a business to locate itself, because apparently it is a terrible place to live and you couldn't possibly get any talented young professionals to want to come here. Have you ever driven south or east of West Lafayette? There are other schools of business and universities in Indiana. While Krannert is no slouch on its own, IU and Notre Dame are both home to excellent, and nationally ranked, schools of business, with many talented candidates to draw from. IUPUI and Butler also boast schools of business with talented students who would make excellent employees. But you are right, Indianapolis is no place for big business. I sure hope nobody uses any drugs or products made by Eli Lilly. They hire the morons who have to settle for working in Indianapolis. It’s a wonder that Simon Property Group somehow managed to become the country's largest owner of shopping malls and Wellpoint somehow managed to insure more people than any other private insurer, given that they have to deal with the yokels who choose to live in Indianapolis I suppose the folks at Roche are just as dumb as the students at Krannert. They chose the wrong place to base their diabetes strip manufacturing and to employe 4,000 people. I guess I should recommend not buying into the IPO of the quickly growing ExactTarget, as they have their operations out of a building downtown (yep, we idiots here in Indianapolis figured out how to build office buildings that are more than a story high). And, shh, don’t tell anyone, but they hire a lot of people who went to Purdue. We don't want that getting out, or the company might collapse.
You seem to not believe that anyone would choose to live in Indianapolis over Chicago. I guess that the lower cost of living (particularly for real estate) doesn’t matter. Without even looking at statistics, I am certain that our crime rate is lower than Chicago’s. I know for certain our politics are significantly less corrupt. The people here are hospitable, generous and kind. Perhaps you can make a trip down here and check us out sometime before the next time you mention us in a blog. I get civic pride and all, but there’s no reason to belittle other cities in an attempt to make a case for yours.
Now, this journalist forgot to include my brother's first paragraph, which stated:

I read your blog today regarding the Merc's possible move to Indianapolis/power play to lower their tax rate. It was a prime example of a journalist putting in little to no effort in researching before writing.

Ha! I wonder why he didn't post that part on his blog! I'm so proud of Yuval for standing up for all of us who chose Indy as our home. I think someone should hire him to write his own blog!

    Hanging Out

I promise I won't post about every playdate that Ethan and Luke have, but these two are adorable! I love that Ethan has a buddy who is right around his age. It will be wonderful to watch these two grow together. They are two little handsome devils, don't you think???

P.S. - This is my 200th blog post!

    The Best Laid Plans

I've decided that during the weeks that Kevin is out of town, Ethan and I will do one special activity each day. After testing this out for a few days, I've found that it makes the day go by faster, and it gives me something to look forward to, rather than just sitting around doing nothing.

Yesterday, our activity was to go to my book club meeting, even though neither of us had read the book (hahaha). Anyway, Ethan woke from his nap, I fed and changed him, fed Tobi, packed the diaper bag, and got my dinner ready to scarf down. At this point, Ethan decided that I was not supposed to have my dinner and would not stop fussing. I realized that he was still hungry, had to drop everything, and feed him for FIVE minutes...that's all he wanted. This whole fiasco caused us to be 15 minutes late, and I was left hungry.

I thought I had done such a good job of timing everything...but I guess Ethan had other plans, and it's his plans that count!

    The Moby Experiment

We've been putting it off...testing our infant carrier and wrap. We have an ERGObaby Carrier and a Moby Wrap. We decided that today was the day, and we'd attack the more overwhelming of the two...the Moby Wrap.

After 15 minutes of frustration trying to get it onto me (where we consulted both the instruction manual and YouTube videos), I decided I'd gotten it right. All I needed was a baby...but he was sleeping, and I was NOT about to wake him. We resorted to the next best thing...

    A POPPLE!!

Hopefully, Ethan is as accommodating as this non-moving, non-crying ball of fluff!

    Helpful Doggie

This morning, we were in a rush to get ourselves together and get out the door for Tobi's pre-operative consultation with his surgeon. I was rushing to get Ethan fed, and had his bottle in the warmer. He was being quite impatient and fussing/crying. I took him to the couch to unwrap his Miracle Blanket, heard some ongoing noise, and couldn't figure out where it was coming from.

I looked down, and saw Ethan's travel Sleep Sheep laying at my feet. I remembered placing it on a blanket near his swing, which was a good 6-7 feet away from us. I picked it up and felt that it was a bit moist. Tobi had picked it up and carried it to where we were, inadvertently turning it on! I know this was probably an accident, but I'm going to pretend that he did this to help soothe Ethan, like the good big brother he is!

In some funny news, while Kevin was feeding him, he noticed a moist spot on his back. That's right...Ethan pooped up his back...AGAIN. It was dis.gus.ting. Thank goodness he was still in his sleeper and we hadn't changed him into his outfit for the day!

Finally, today Ethan is six weeks old. Everyone says the first six weeks are the hardest, so I definitely feel that we've hit a big milestone!

    My Hungry Caterpillar

Someone is growing into his 0-3 month clothing. Bye bye tiny Newborn-sized clothes! This hungry caterpillar is growing and growing so he can turn into a handsome butterfly!

By the way, this was one of our awesome finds at Once Upon a Child...just happens to match his nursery!
