Christmas Memories

I loved your California Christmas pictures - Don. We had some very memorable Christmases in SoCal as well.
Unfortunately, we are now in the frozen tundra of Utah and can only dream of walking the beach on Christmas day.
I did have one Christmas memory that I wanted to share - but Robert may have a better memory of the Christmas than I. So if it is incorrectly remembered, Robert will set the record straight.
I believe it was the Christmas of 1968 because Bob gave me the Santa talk on the way to the bus stop (I was in first grade and Bob in 3rd) and we decided to look for hidden presents before Christmas. We found a few under Mom and Dad's bed and also in their closet where dad kept the 30-30.
I remember Robert and I having a plan to get up early and go play the games that we found before anyone else got up.
So sometime between midnight and 2AM - one of us woke up and woke up the other. We went down and saw the Christmas loot all displayed. We broke open Battleship and went into the what was then known as the playroom and began learning the intricacies of the game. Adrenaline from the excitement of Christmas kept us going for a game or two and then we began to wonder why everyone else was so slow in getting up. We went into the kitchen to look at the clock and saw that it was only 2:30AM. I am not sure how long we were up - but we were worried that we were going to get in trouble for being up that early. So we went back to bed and slept in. Caran, Cheri and Gary could not understand why we did not want to see what Santa brought. They did not know that we had already seen it all.
I think that is when M&D started hiding the presents in the basement and putting all those weird name tags on the presents so that we did not know which box was ours.
My family still has to hide my presents until Christmas for fear of me opening them before Christmas.
Let's not forget the silver tinsel Christmas tree and blue ornaments - classic.
I can only remember one freshly cut tree - boy our house smelled festive that year.
I can only remember one Christmas at the 1622 house - we drove up from Tustin to be with M&D, Christine and Don that year. That was a very long drive and we vowed never to do that again.
We hope that you all make some fun memories this year as well.
Merry Christmas to all!

Christmas 1997

Here are some other Christmas Memories from 1997 when Mom, Dad, Christine and I spent Christmas in San Diego with Bob and Melody.

Some of My Christmas Memories

Thanks for getting us started Dad! I always enjoy reading about Christmas memories - forgotten or otherwise.

Besides the famous (or infamous) Christmas Memories (ie the Tee-Pee Tent; the one where Christine and I are sad), I try to think of other years and memories that aren't so well-known in the family.

Two of my favorite childhood gifts I received one year (at the 813 house) were from the O'Dells and from Caran and Mark.

The O'Dell's lived next door. As a kid you don't think too much about who the gifts come from. But as I remember that Christmas now, I think how kind and thoughtful of them to give me and Christine Christmas gifts that year. They gave me a ship-in-a-bottle. I loved that ship-in-a-bottle. I remember spending hours looking at the details of it and how cool and ancient it looked. It was almost a magical gift. I also spent hours wondering how the heck they got that ship in there.

Caran and Mark gave me one of the coolest gifts that year ... a remote control car. It only had two directions: forward and reverse, but since it had a 'fifth' wheel (underneath and in the middle of the car) when it went in reverse, it would change directions. The control wasn't radio remote control ... it was sound remote control, so it was just this battery-less device that made a loud clicking sound. It was probably the most basic of basic remote control cars, but I loved it. I still remember the smell of electronic newness of that gift - that smell still gets me excited today! I loved that car long after it stopped working. I dug around my old pictures and actually found a picture of this wonderous childhood gift!

I have lots of memories of Christmases at the 1622 house. Mom would usually decorate the first Saturday after Thanksgiving. That was the same day of the Ontario Winter Wonderland Parade. I remember one year Mom putting the finishing touches on the decorations in the dark evening. All the lights were off except the Christmas lights. On the TV was the Nutcracker ballet.

Another year on a quiet, snowy evening, we were all watching TV when we heard quite a crash. We looked out the window and saw that a car had plowed into our neighbor's fence across the street. I think the passenger got out and started running while the driver was able to slam it in reverse and escape as well. I think they were drunk. We called the cops and if I remember correctly, they caught the guy. The neighbors were very thankful and since they were the owners/managers of the Vale mushroom plant, they gave us a carton of mushrooms!

What other forgotten or untold Christmas memories do ya'll have?

Please share!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Christmas Memories

Thanks to Don .. I wish to share some Christmas Memories of long ago in Woodruff.

As a youngster Christmas was always a magical time for me. We lived on a Ranch 3 miles out of town. The countryside would always be covered with snow, sometimes deep enough to cover the fences. There would always be a Christmas Party and Play in Woodruff on Christmas Eve. All of our family usually participated in them. Having lost our Model T Ford in a fire, we would go to Woodruff in a sleigh pulled by a team of horses. Rocks were heated in the oven and put in a burlap sack, to keep our feet warm as we rode to Woodruff. Santa Claus always came at the end of the program and gave sacks of candy to the kids. As we rode back home in the moon and starlight the evening was beautiful and exciting. We had a hard time going to sleep.

I thought about those times often as we gathered our little family around us on Christmas Eve in the big 813 home in Ontario. The house was decorated with lights and tinsel and could have been a Currier & Ives Christmas Card. As most of you remember, presents were hidden in the basement. Sometime gifts were not found until Springtime.
MERRY CHRISTMAS Dad

23-26

How sweet it is ...

I wasn't too impressed with the time management of the game. I think BYU could have had a legitimate chance to pull this off in regulation. Hall wasn't great at all in this game. And again, the coaching should have been calling running plays a lot more often ... the running game was on yesterday. Nevertheless, these thriller wins are always memorable.

Thinking of Our Family

Today we had our Stake Conference via satellite from Salt Lake City. The General Authorities were Elder Cook and President Erying.

As I listened to their talks the Spirit gave me a very strong impression to communicate the feelings that came to me, to my family.

It is so very important to stay close to the Spirit of Our Father-in Heaven that we may withstand all the temptings of Satan and the evils of the world. To do this, sincere prayer and scripture study (Book of Mormon) must be part of our daily schedule. Pornography and all the mind-debasing materials or pictures, must be avoided like a deadly disease. Never allow yourself to read or pause for a second to watch any non-virtuous images that are constantly popping-up on the TV set or Internet. (Be super quick with the remote)

Lucifer is so clever using hate, guile, and sensuous attractions to pull our minds away from purity, virtue and faith in our Savior and His commandments. Please do not think that you are strong enough to let your eyes or mind wander into shallow waters of sin without being drowned in the murky depths of Hell. Those who have tried this, and realized too late their failure, are innumerable.

Let us treat each other with respect and love. Being conscious at all times of the importance of keeping our thoughts clean and virtuous. Be modest and humble. Pray for ourselves and each other that we will resist all evil, all immorality and stay close to the Spirit of God, which will lead us back to Our Savior, and back to Our Father-in-Heaven, where peace and purity will envelope us in the light of Celestial righteousness.

Your Mother (Grandmother) and I pray for each of you every day. I hope you remember us in your prayers, as well. Let us be an Eternal Family, that we may be Together Forever.
Jesus Christ is our Savior and Redeemer. Dad (Grandpa)

Good-Bye to Halloween

Just one more Epitaph to finish off Halloween.

This is a sample of indefinite and exact prose:

Here lies Uncle Fred
You could probably say he's dead
To be explicit
He got a ticket
To the place that we all dread

Apologies to Caran. I doubt if she will ever ask Mark and I to do Epitaphs again !!!

Four Years Later

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
We're still here after 4 years! Thanks for contributing everyone!

Just wanted to let you know that Geneive passed away this morning. We had heard from her family a few days ago and it didn't look like she was going to live very long. So now we are all thankful that she has gone to a better place. Love, Dad

The Dragon

I've always loved this post-card Richard sent to me while he was on his mission. I've kept it all these years and have finally got around to scanning it. It makes me smile every time I read it.

The real story behind the dragon (called the Graoully) at Metz is just as interesting as Richard's. You can read about it at this web page. Wikipedia also has a nice entry about the cathedral itself: Metz Cathedral in Moselle, France.

El Mirador & DNA Tests

I just found this article while reading another Book of Mormon blog.

http://www.vision.org/visionmedia/article.aspx?id=18952

In a nutshell, the current theory why El Mirador fell is because allies of their rivals at Tikal (about 40 miles southeast of El Mirador) didn't like them. They recently found arrow heads with blood them. They are sending the samples to Missouri to have DNA testing performed on them. The theory is they'll find DNA of the people at El Mirador and different DNA of the people who attacked them (allies to Tikal).

This is the first I've ever heard of a DNA analysis being performed on Mayan remains.

Epitaphs

I know that Cheri loves October and Halloween, but since she is so busy with Grandmotherly duties I thought I would start the season a little early.

My favorite "Old West" epitaph is:

Here lies Less More
Shot six times with a forty-four
No less, no more.

This is my personal epitaph, if someone will put it on my Tombstone:

Here lies J.P.
He hit many balls off the little tee
He swung his best
Now lays at rest
In a Hole-in-One
By a Cottonwood tree

This is the son of our neighbors who lost their home in the Witch Creek Fire. He also was my H.C. speaking companion when he returned home from his mission.

Take care of him for us, Briana!
