Jack Taylor Scores NCAA Record 138 Points for Grinnell
That is pretty incredible ... so let's tell some old basketball war stories ...
First one ... during my sophomore year, we were at Vale. I was on the JV squad. I was open a lot of the times behind the arc and I let 'er rip. I took a lot of 3 pointers ... so many, that at half time, Coach Schauer (who was the
varsity coach - not the JV coach) felt it necessary to come into the locker room at half time and throw a tube of sore-muscle cream at me and yell at me for taking too many shots. It was my own fault, I guess. If I would have made a few of those shots, I wonder if he would have done that :-)
Second one ... during my senior year - I was cut from the basketball team. So what else could I do but play church ball. When the tournament came, we had our first game in the old church gym. Of course, I knew every single angle of that gym better than any other player on the court. I can't remember how many I scored, but it was a lot. Every shot I put up went in. Later that day, we had another game, but this time it was at the Stake Center ... I was less hot than the first game, but still scored a bunch of points. Ontario 2nd made it to the final, where we played one of the Fruitland teams. They had a bunch of really good ballers. It was a close one, but we lost it.
Third one ... and who can forget all those many games when Dad was on. He had that patented side-running shot that was so far out,
no one thought he could hit it, so they stayed back. After being burned so many times, they decide to get a bit closer to guard Dad - but he would still nail those shots.
Last one ... Dad and I inaugurated the Ontario Stake center gym with a 1/2 court game of 2's and 3's. First one to 100 won. I think I won that one by a couple of points.
Any other ones that stand out in your minds?
