Our Little Patriot

I've been teahing Coop about the 4th of July the last few days. He's SO excited about seeing some fireworks next week, since he's been watching fireworks on youtube. Today we made a flag and fireworks. The flag he cut the stripes and blue square himself. He's practicing cutting on the lines. But what I really love is his rendition of fireworks, which he did all by himself. :)

Cooper's Bedroom

Finally finished Cooper's bedroom, since I finished the bed and bookshelf last week, and finally found him a bedspread and sheets that I liked an that fit my budget. Feels good for our son's room to be complete. Feels weird to have all the baby furniture and toys gone. He's not a baby any more!

Cooper being Cooper

Cooper LOVES to paint.  However, he won't use on color at a time, but prefers to mix them together, so everything he paints turns out brown, black, or gray.  He also loves wearing this old shirt of mine as his art smock, which he calls his "art mock."
I couldn't resist this picture of my two favorite boys taking a nap together.  You should have heard the synchronized snoring!!
One day Cooper was repeatedly saying, "Mom, wook what I tan do!"  The first thing he was doing that day when I heard that phrase was dancing on top of the dining room table.  The next time he was doing somersaults across the room (something he recently figured out how to do on his own).  The third time he said it, I was folding laundry, and he was up on top of the couch (seen below).  He was excited that he was "so high," and then he promptly jumped down onto the pillows and onto the ottoman.  That's one of his favorite things to do: jump from the couch to the ottoman.  Sometimes the jumping distances he attempts about give me a heart attack.
Cooper's friends next door are much older than him, so they have lots of big kid bikes and scooters.  He loves riding his tricycle, but really wanted to ride their scooter.  So we took some of his own money, and went out and bought him a scooter just his size.  He's really good at it!
The other notable thing about this is his bike helmet, which is an unbelievable child size 8!!  Our 2 yr old wears a helmet made for an 8 yr old.  It looks kinda funny being so big, but none of the other helmets would even fit over the crown of his head.
Occasionally Cooper gets to play with Brayden, the little boy a few houses down from us who is just 4 weeks older than Coop.  They both love all things firetruck/fireman, and I couldn't resist taking this picture of the two of them playing fireman together.
A few other things Cooper's done in the last few weeks:
  • Coop is already learning how to manipulate us.  He asked me if he could do something, and I said no. So then he asked Nate, who also said no.  Then Coop says to Nate, "But I won't tell Mommy."
  • Cooper told his first knock-knock joke the other day without really meaning to.  He was in the back seat of the car saying "knock-knock" over and over, so I finally said, "Who's there?"  He said, "Cooper!"  Me: "Cooper who?"  Him:  "Cooper James!"  [Also of note: he still pronounces his name "Pooper."]
  • Cooper calls trampolines "jump-o-weens."One night Nate and I were talking about the economy, and he said, "The US gov't is stupid because...," at which pint Coop interjected from the backseat, "Dad, you said a naughty word.  You said stupid.  You need timeout."  As if that didn't crack me up enough, Nate said, "Son, isn't it perplexing that your mother and I can put you in timeout, but you can't put us in it?"  I could see Coop's wheels turning as he mulled it over, and tried to say "perplexing," and then he said, "Well, you DID say a naughty word."  Gotta give it to him for sticking to his guns!
  • Nate said, "Coop, come here and give Dad a hug.  I'm hug deficient."  Coop replies, "I want to doe (go) de-fishin'."
  • Yesterday Cooper ran into my room waking me up by shouting, "Mom, there's a forest fire, there's a forest fire in our back ard (yard)!  Thinking he was just pretending as he often does, I ignored him, and rolled over.  Not much later he came back again shouting the same thing.  There are woods behind our house, so at this point I was a little concerned something might actually be wrong.  I got up, and he dragged me to his bedroom window where the orange sunrise was glinting off the tree trunks and leaves.  The trees looked like they were glowing.  Coop was gravely disappointed that no firefighters would be coming to our yard.

Let's Go on an EdVenture!

There's a great childrens' museum in Columbia, SC called EdVenture.  Cooper and I had the best time exploring it with Aunt Denise.  I'm not sure which was his favorite part.  We started off in the construction zone, where he was super excited to "drive" the bulldozer.  He wouldn't crack a smile for the camera; apparently this was serious business.
Next came the life-size fire truck.  Cooper was all about it, climbing in and out, on and off, and being sure to tell us his favorite line from one of his storybooks, "If the alarm wings, I hafta doe." [Translation: If the alarm rings, I have to go.], complete with finger wagging and all.
Next was the farm tractor.  The face says it all...
I was mistaken thinking that he may not be interested in the child-size grocery store.  He didn't stop for a second!  He got right to work putting things in his grocery cart, and then taking them to the checkout stand where he very methodically scanned all the items and placed them at the end of the scanner.  He seemed distraught that there were no bags to put the items in.
He LOVED pressing all the buttons on the cashier side, and the card reader.  Aunt Denise even let him borrow one of her credit cards, and you should have seen him slide it through, the right direction and everything!!! (I seldom let him press the buttons on the card reader when we're out shopping.  I think my kid is adorable, but not all cashiers or customers in line behind us think the same thing, so this was a BIG moment for him.)
Once again, he wouldn't stop for even a second to let me take a picture.
Next it was on to Ed, the "BIG boy" as Coop called him.  There's a slide inside, and we got to explore things like his heart, brain, eyes, etc.
Then it was off to the dentist.  Future dentist, folks?
We were sure not to miss the butterfly exhibit.  Coop loved looking at all the butterflies, which was perfectly timed after having checked out a book from the library about butterflies the week before.

Coop and I made the trip by ourselves, since Nate wasn't feeling well that day.  So glad we went despite Dad missing from the scene.  As always, we had a GREAT time with Aunt Denise.  Cooper LOVES to visit her every chance we get.
And for once, I actually have proof that I was there!
The real reason for the trip was to celebrate Aunt Denise's birthday with her, which we did!  Cooper is finally not afraid of birthday candles, and enjoyed helping her blow them out.  Happy birthday, Denise!  Thank you for going on a great EdVenture with us, and letting us celebrate with you!
Ever since, Cooper's been asking when is his birthday so he can blow out more "tandoles..."

Swimming with Friends

Cooper loves to swim in the backyard with his friends from next door.  He begs nearly every day to swim and/or run through the sprinkler.
These are Cooper's friends, Amy and Jasmine from next door.  They come over to play nearly every day, even though they're quite a bit older than he is.  They ride bikes/trikes, ride scooters, play in the sand, play sidewalk chalk, swim, play on the swing set, color, play trains...basically all the stuff he loves to do.  He's a good little sport playing with two stubborn, bossy little girls, but he loves having the company, and when they don't come over to play, he asks for them.  I'm glad he has friends.

Memorial Day at Tweetsie Railroad

Without having anything planned beforehand, Memorial Day ended up being quite fun.  We headed up to the mountains with nothing in mind besides maybe doing some hiking and a picnic.  Without a map, we ended up not finding much hiking, but we did happen upon Tweetsie Railroad, a small children's amusement park with a real steam engine train.  Cooper was ecstatic!
Here he is getting ready to ride the train.
When we got on the train, we found out it didn't leave for the next ride for 20 minutes.  Coop refused to get off, thinking he'd miss it.  So we hung out for awhile.

All aboard!

Then we went on all the rides Coop could do.  He loved driving these cars with his Dad.
Of course we had to ride the carousel...
...the helicopters...
...the airplanes...
...and the boats!
It was a pretty slow day for them, so we got to go on many of the rides again and again.
Cooper couldn't wait to go on the Ferris wheel.  He giggled and squealed every time we went up higher than the trees.
We went to see one of their kids shows, and Cooper was chosen to help sing, "I've been workin on the railroad."  He got really shy and embarrassed, and soon after I took these two pictures, he burst into tears and we ended up having to leave the show.  It was pretty funny.
It was a great day together as a family, and ended up being really fun, especially since we hadn't planned much of anything.  Yay for holidays where we get to enjoy our freedoms and be with our families!
