10 years of being together justified our first vacation without kiddos in 6 years!
My mom graciously volunteered to watch all three girls while we used our free tickets to visit Seattle. We both had never been, but knew it was a young hip spot, and wanted to go while we were still young. ha!
I was able to book first class tickets on US Airways with our miles, so we flew there in style. We also had free passes we were saving for the admiral's club and redeemed them in Phoenix since we knew they had one at that airport. Free booze and snacks before we flew, and free booze and meals on the flight set us up for a perfect vacation.
We took the tram into the city. It was just like being back in San Francisco, and made me miss that city even more.
We stayed at the Sheraton downtown. It was a little difficult finding a hotel because we just happened to plan our trip the same weekend as the PGA US Open, which Jeff was stoked about. However, when I thought of the genius idea of getting him tickets to the event while we were there, they were already sold out, four months in advance!!! There was no way I was paying for them on StubHub, where the price was 3x face value, so I thought that was not going to happen. BUT!!! My friend Toniann's husband is the manager of Tucson Country Club, AND!! they happen to be from Seattle, so he pulled some strings, and got me 2 tickets, sold at face value. It was the best Father's Day surprise for Jeff I could pull off! We were both stoked to be able to go, and I didn't tell him until right before leaving.
We got in Saturday night and just explored the city. We both made a goal to do things that we couldn't do with kiddos while there. We played pool at a nearby bar, went to a couple breweries, and walked everywhere until we were tired.
Sunday, we went to the US Open. We rented a car since it was pretty south of the city in Tacoma.
The course was reminiscent of a Scottish golf course. It was super hilly, though, with some of the holes being at a steep incline to get to. We stayed mostly by the water, and walked several of the holes. We were able to see a lot of the big names, and while Jeff enjoyed the golf, I enjoyed the view and perfect weather. (The weather was beautiful the whole vacation- only drizzling rain the day we left).
We left for the city, only to find out that our rental car's battery died. Jeff made reservations for the Space Needle that night, so we had to get back, but the rental car company told us it would be 2 hours before we got someone to help us. Low, and behold, the police officer in our lot had jumper cables! So, we made it back in time to get ready for dinner.
Jeff made the reservation for sunset. It was so perfect. We had a delicious dinner, and enjoyed the bay and city views during sunset. The space needle rotates 360 degrees every 45 minutes. We were able to go around twice. And then... DESSERT. It was so fun! It's called the lunar orbiter, and it comes out in a cool bowl, with the smoke billowing over. so fun!
Monday came, and we visited Pike's Place Market. We had fish tossed in our face, enjoyed the yummy items, bought a couple souvenirs, and went to Beechers for some cheese. Then, we took the ferry to Bainbridge. I didn't get sick, but it was close! We tasted some yummy wine and had ice cream.
We met up with the Tarletons that evening and had dinner at Rock Bottom, and visited the GUM WALL (which they are getting rid of). We love visiting friends who are in the same boat as us, and getting to share our journeys with each other.
On Tuesday, We toured all the museums in the area. EMP, Chihuly Glass, and we enjoyed Jurassic World at the IMAX.
Our last day, we (I) did a little shopping, and we stopped at Rachel's Ginger Beer and had Moscow Mules. Then it was on our way home. We missed the kiddos but had the most wonderful time. Next time, we will probably bring the kids to Seattle with us if/when we return.
On the way home, we got a great view of Seattle, and then Mt. Ranier. A great way to end.
