Bernadette ~ A Review & Giveaway

About the Book

Book: Bernadette: A Sweet, Quirky, Romantic Twist

Author: Jennifer Lynn Cary

Genre: Sweet Romantic Comedy

Release Date: August 4, 2025

She’s supposed to be a small-town girl…

…He’s billed as America’s biggest heartthrob.

What could possibly go wrong? How about everything?

Tiny Bernie Sawrey is perfectly happy fixing carburetors until her stepmother ambushes her with a blind date. The catch? It’s with movie star Garrett Lomas, Bernie’s secret celebrity crush and the reason she’s haunted the drive-in alone her entire adult life.

There’s just one teensy problem: Bernie’s about as Hollywood-ready as a rusty muffler.

But when her dad’s garage faces financial ruin, suddenly playing Kokomo’s answer to the girl-next-door doesn’t seem so impossible, if it will help. How hard can it be to fake being normal for a few weeks?

Meanwhile, Gabe Lomas thought being his identical twin’s stunt double only involved driving race cars—not impersonating him at charity events in small-town Indiana. But when the movie studio execs set up the deal and Garrett’s fiancée says no way, Gabe trades his helmet for a fake smile and a very real problem.

The problem? Bernie Sawrey, all five-foot-nothing of her, with enough quirk and innocence to charm the grumpiest producer. That’s the problem.

Gabe is falling for her hard, only she thinks he’s his famous brother.

And she just might be falling for him too.

Now he’s caught between protecting his brother’s career and protecting his own heart. Because telling Bernie the truth might send her racing away—but not telling her guarantees he’ll lose her when she finds out.

Return to 1973 Kokomo, Indiana, where the cardinal in the sycamore knows that love—like a good engine—runs best when all the parts are genuine. A sweet, hilarious tale of mistaken identity, small-town charm, and finding love when you’re not even being yourself.

You will enjoy this sweet, quirky tale of secret twists, because sometimes the best love stories start with a little white lie and maybe a bit of motor oil.

Bernadette: A Sweet, Quirky Romantic Twist by Jennifer Lynn Cary, the 8th book in The Weather Girls Wedding Shoppe and Venue Book series, is a Sweet Romantic Comedy.

This romance charmingly blends small-town life with celebrity chaos, delivering heart and humor throughout.

Set in 1973 Kokomo, Indiana, this tale introduces Bernie Sawrey, a mechanic more at home under a car than in the spotlight. She’s quirky, sincere, and content—until a blind date with America’s biggest movie star, Garrett Lomas, her secret crush, upends her quiet life.

The story embraces its fun, fish-out-of-water premise from the start. Bernie’s efforts to fit into a world she doesn’t know are endearing and funny. Underneath, there’s sacrifice and love; Bernie helps save her father’s garage, not seeking fame but putting family first.

Gabe Lomas, the identical twin and stunt double, steps in unexpectedly. His presence adds a twist, turning a simple romance into one of hidden identity and truth. Gabe’s struggle to be honest while fearing the outcome creates genuine tension.

Bernie and Gabe’s chemistry stands out. Their interactions are natural, warm, humorous, and sweet. Bernie’s authenticity gradually breaks through Gabe’s guard, showing that real connection doesn’t depend on fame or perfection.

From a Christian view, the story quietly highlights truth, integrity, and genuineness. Though romance begins in deception, it shows that love needs honesty. We’re reminded to live authentically, not hide, since real love means being fully known and accepted.

The small-town setting adds its own charm. Kokomo feels warm and familiar, celebrating community, simplicity, and the beauty of ordinary life. The 1970s backdrop enhances the cozy atmosphere.

If the story has a drawback, it’s the predictable mistaken identity trope. Yet, the heartfelt journey to the truth keeps it enjoyable.

This lighthearted, clean romance blends humor, heart, and meaning for an enjoyable read. It reminds us that glamour isn’t required for deep love—real relationships are built on authenticity.

If you enjoy sweet romances with quirky characters, small-town charm, and meaningful themes, check out Bernadette: A Sweet, Quirky Romantic Twist by Jennifer Lynn Cary, along with the rest of The Weather Girls Wedding Shoppe and Venture Book series.

I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.

More from Jennifer

As I put this series together in my head, certain books were right there, laid out, easy to have a handle on them. But with Bernadette, I knew two things: she was a tiny spitfire, and the first line of the book had to be someone calling out her name. Why? Because that’s the way the Four Tops started the song that was my inspiration. Sort of. Actually, that is the only thing I used from the song.

I also wanted to introduce my readers to other places I remembered in Kokomo during the 1970s. I’d only been to the Kokomo Speedway once, and all I could remember was that it was loud. It was my one and only date with a longtime friend who had been an on-again, off-again boyfriend of my best friend. After we moved to Arizona, I had a chance to go back home for a few weeks before my senior year. Cheryl and Jim were no longer an item, but I’d been friends with both. Jim asked if I wanted to go to the races and I agreed. Can’t remember if we took his motorcycle or not, but I did ride with him once or twice on that trip. The funny thing is, we knew we were better as friends, and especially with the long distance between us, that was all either of us wanted. We remained friends for many years before we lost contact—I got to meet his wife and daughters, and he met my husband.

About the time I was starting this book, as the plot ideas were coming together, one of my sweet sisters from our Bible study group succumbed to cancer. Debbie was a sweet light, and I wanted to honor her. I asked her family if I could use her name in the story and they agreed.

Finally, I think every girl remembers the first boy to ask her to go steady. The thing is, I’m not sure who it was. From kindergarten through fourth grade, I went to school with the Richardson twins. Both were sweet and funny. Mike was the more outgoing, Mark was quieter.

I remember one time going to their house and making Christmas ornaments from straws after we learned how in school.

One day I got a phone call. I’d learned to tell them apart in person, but on the phone, not so much. I got asked to go steady. My dad had already informed me that ten-years-old was too young, so I blamed it on Dad and declined.

A few minutes later, I got a second phone call. Again I was asked to go steady and had to say no. The thing is, I never knew who asked first!

After that year we moved across town though I kept in touch with my friends. It was only about two-three years later that I learned Mike had died from an accident. It wasn’t my first intro to death, but it was concerning someone my own age.

It’s been almost sixty years since I last saw Mike Richardson, but I still remember him with fondness. Another reason I had twins in this story. If only I knew which twin had asked me to go steady first.

The Bible Companion: Proverbs – Songs of Songs ~ A Review & Giveaway

About the Book

Book: The Bible Companion Book 7 Proverbs-Song of Songs

Author: Karen Westbrook Moderow

Genre: Bible Study

Release Date: September 6, 2025

Are you disappointed with life?

The Bible Companion Book 7 helps you reconcile the realities of life with the promises of God. A simple one-chapter-a-day format lets you engage with Scriptures without the pressure of schedules, homework, or heavy reading loads. Short daily readings and thought-provoking questions connect your story to God’s Word. For personal, group, or homeschool Bible study.

In the Books of Wisdom, God speaks to us in poetry—the language of the heart. These books reveal a God concerned not only about our minds and bodies, but also our emotions. Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Songs bridge the gap between life as we hoped it would be and life as it is. If you struggle with your life’s circumstances, The Bible Companion Book 7 will help you find guidance, comfort, and strength in the poetry of men and women who searched for God in the dark and found Him.

The Bible Study Companion Book 7: Proverbs – Song of Songs by Karen Westbrook Moderow is the next installation in this series.

If you’re looking for a peaceful, practical way to read and reflect on Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Songs, The Bible Companion Book 7 delivers. Its one-chapter-a-day design removes the pressure of schedules and heavy study plans, making Scripture approachable for busy individuals, small groups, or homeschool settings. Each short reading is paired with thought-provoking questions that invite readers to connect personal experience with biblical truth—an effective structure for turning meditation into real-life application.

What makes this companion stand out is its focus on the poetic voice of the Books of Wisdom. The material highlights how God speaks to the heart—addressing emotions, doubts, and the messy realities of daily life—rather than merely presenting abstract doctrine. Readers who feel torn between “how life should be” and “how it actually is” will find empathy, depth, and practical consolation here. The selections and reflections emphasize guidance, comfort, and spiritual resilience drawn from voices who wrestled with darkness and discovered God’s presence.

The concise format is both a strength and a limitation: it’s ideal for consistent devotional habit and group discussion, but readers seeking deep exegetical study or comprehensive commentary will want to supplement it with longer treatments. Still, for anyone needing accessible daily encounters with Scripture that speak to the heart as well as the mind, this companion is a thoughtful, encouraging tool.

Recommendation: Great for personal devotions, small-group study, or homeschool Bible time—especially if you want a manageable, emotion-centered approach to the poetic wisdom of Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Songs

So if you are looking for a Bible Study, check out The Bible Study Companion Book 7: Proverbs – Song of Songs by Karen Westbrook Moderow and the rest of The Bible Study Companion series.

The Promise Box

My mother had an intricately carved wooden box approximately 4” x 3” that was passed down to her by her mother. It was called a Promise Box and held 150 small cards in assorted colors. One side had a Scripture verse, the other a prayer. Most of the verses came from Proverbs.

The Promise Box was always kept in place we passed many times a day. A place where we’d be sure to see it and be enticed to pull a card. I’d lift the lid and breathe in the musty smell of years gone by then choose a card, eager to see what message from God awaited me. The limp cards with their faded colors told me I wasn’t the first.

My mother’s Promise Box had belonged to her mother. When my mother-in-law died, I received the Promise Box that had belonged to her grandmother. By then the metal box engraved with an intricate family scene had seen better days. The hinges had broken apart. The once shiny box had darkened to near black. But I couldn’t part with it. It had to be more than 150 years old. I couldn’t help but wonder how many times those who owned it reached for a word from the Lord to get them through their day.

Most had lost children. They depended on God for daily bread literally as the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl took their family members and livelihoods. As an adult, I understood that we aren’t to treat the promises of God like fortune cookies we hope will bring us good luck. A daily visit to the Promise Box doesn’t substitute for time spent with God in prayer and His Word but it has value. The Promise Box reminds us that God is not only in the church, He is in our homes. He wants us to see Him, to reach for Him, and rely on His promises. If a little box nudges us to look to Him with expectation., then it is not only a gift we should treasure, but a treasure we should pass on.

Petticoat Ranch ~ A Review & Giveaway

About the Book

Book: Petticoat Ranch

Author: Mary Connealy

Genre: Christian Historical Romance

Release Date: March 10, 2026

From beloved author Mary Connealy comes a delightful Western adventure brimming with danger, laughter, and unexpected romance—a tale of a resourceful widow, a rugged cowboy, and the ready-made family that will steal his heart. Perfect for fans of Tracie Peterson and Karen Witemeyer.

Sophie Edwards has survived two years in the Texas wilderness with four daughters and her wits. When a stranger falls injured near her hidden cabin during a thunderstorm, she discovers he’s the spitting image of her late husband—because Clay McClellen is her husband’s twin brother, a man who never knew his brother existed.

Clay came to Texas seeking justice for his brother’s murder. What he finds instead is a ready-made family, a rundown ranch, and a fiercely independent woman who doesn’t need rescuing—even when danger comes calling. Sophie may have pulled him from a flooded creek, but Clay is determined to be the protector she deserves, whether she wants one or not.

As vigilantes close in and old enemies resurface, Clay and Sophie must learn to trust each other and God’s plan. But can a mountain man used to solitude embrace life with four talkative daughters? And can Sophie open her guarded heart to love again—especially when the man looks exactly like the husband who broke it?

A heartwarming tale of second chances, faith, and finding love in the untamed West.

Petticoat Ranch by Mary Connealy is a Christian Historical Romance.

If you love Christian historical romance filled with humor, heart, and a strong thread of faith, then Mary Connealy Western novel about Sophie Edwards and Clay McClellen by Mary Connealy is a must-read. With shades of beloved authors like Tracie Peterson and Karen Witemeyer, this story delivers both laughter and meaningful spiritual depth.

From the very first chapter, readers are drawn into the rugged Texas wilderness, where widow Sophie Edwards is doing far more than surviving—she’s raising four daughters with grit, courage, and unwavering determination. Sophie is the kind of heroine you can’t help but admire: fiercely independent, deeply loving, and shaped by both loss and faith.

Enter Clay McClellen—a wounded stranger who stumbles into Sophie’s life during a storm, only to reveal a shocking connection: he’s the twin brother of Sophie’s late husband. Clay’s journey begins with a mission for justice, but what he finds instead is something far more life-changing—a family he never expected and a faith that challenges his fiercely independent nature.

What makes this story shine is its balance of lighthearted humor and heartfelt moments. The interactions between Clay and Sophie’s daughters bring warmth and laughter, while the growing relationship between Sophie and Clay is tender, complicated, and beautifully paced. Sophie’s struggle to trust again—especially someone who looks exactly like the man who hurt her—adds emotional depth that resonates long after the final page.

Faith is woven naturally throughout the story, reminding readers that God’s plans often look very different from our own. Themes of forgiveness, trust, and second chances are handled with care and authenticity, making this more than just a romance—it’s a story of healing and redemption.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Mary Connealy novel without a touch of danger. With vigilantes and lingering threats from the past, the stakes remain high, keeping readers engaged as the story unfolds.

Final Thoughts:
This novel is a delightful blend of romance, adventure, and faith. It’s perfect for readers who enjoy strong heroines, rugged heroes, and stories that point back to God’s sovereignty even in life’s most uncertain moments. A truly uplifting read that will leave you smiling—and maybe even wiping away a tear or two.

More from Mary

Petticoat Ranch is my husband’s story.

My husband is a cowboy…or rather he’s a Nebraska cattleman. Our ‘horse’ though we used to have horses, is now a pick-up truck and a four-wheeled rig that can crawl all over rugged land.

My Cowboy grew up in a family of seven sons.

His mom was about the coolest, nicest lady ever born…a living embodiment of ‘Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff.’ She could tell stories of chaos and mayhem for HOURS and just laugh. I loved her.

Then I married My Cowboy and we had FOUR DAUGHTERS.

My husband spent his whole life confused.

And example of a usual conversation:

My Cowboy: Why won’t they stop crying!?

Why won’t they stop giggling?

Why won’t they stop TALKING?

Me: Um, cuz they’re girls?

He was constantly befuddled. He loved them (still does) so madly but they did NOT make sense to him.

That’s Petticoat Ranch.

A mountain man comes to find his brother’s wife…his brother died and he’s come to ‘rescue’ them. Except they’re unbelievable tough and competent and, well, maybe they could use a little rescuing, life is tough in Texas for a widow and her four children and, in a weak moment, she agrees to marry this man who looks EXACTLY like her husband. A man she never knew existed.

And there they are. Her and her four tough Texas daughters.

Him who’s pretty much never seen a woman in his life, and certainly not a CHILD.

Now they’re married about twenty-four hours after she found out he existed…and they have to figure out how to get along.

I try really hard to thread that needle where a man is befuddled by a woman…but he’s not stupid. A woman is exasperated by a man…but she’s got a good heart.

I shove them together…and leave them to try and get along. If someone is trying to kill them, or steal their ranch, or whatever horrible outlaw is in the book, that adds to the fun.

I shove them together and then leave them to figure out how to get along.

I love Petticoat Ranch. I’ve done this kind of book many times, the mountain man who’s never been around women. The feisty lady rancher who’s used to being in charge. And never did I find that sweet spot quite as well as I did in Petticoat Ranch.

One of my very favorite books.

Ah, tough, self-sufficient Sophie. She really can use the help and he really does look exactly like her dead husband.

Ah, confused but definitely attracted Clay. He’s trying to take care of her and take charge…and she’s not cooperating.

She was definitely in charge when his brother was alive…he was kinda cranky and inept. Why won’t Clay just let her run things?

All those tough little Texas cowgirl daughters who can’t quite figure out if this is they’re pa, given back to them by God…or if this is some new guy that they are desperate to make love them, when their real pa was so desperate to have sons.

I love that Wild Heart Books is re-releasing Petticoat Ranch.

Thank you Wild Heart for giving it another chance at life.

Half Agony, Half Hope: Dear Lily Edition by Joy Michelle Austin is a Contemporary Fiction novel.

There are some stories that don’t just entertain—they gently reach into your heart and remind you of the quiet, steadfast ways God works through love, hardship, and redemption. Half Agony, Half Hope: The Dear Lily Edition is one of those stories.

Lily Wentworth stands on the brink of a life she thought was certain—her wedding just days away—when everything begins to unravel. In her uncertainty, she turns to her father, Rick, a man whose past choices and sacrifices have shaped more of her life than she ever realized. What follows is a deeply moving journey through the journals he wrote during one of the darkest seasons of his life.

As Lily reads, the layers of truth unfold. Through Rick’s words, we see a father fighting—not just for survival, but for his daughter’s safety, future, and hope. His love is fierce, sacrificial, and unwavering, echoing the kind of love we are reminded of in Scripture—a love that protects, perseveres, and never fails (1 Corinthians 13:7).

From a Christian perspective, this story beautifully reflects themes of redemption and grace. Rick’s determination not to let their past define them mirrors the truth found in Christ—that we are not bound by our former struggles, but made new through Him (2 Corinthians 5:17). His journals become more than memories; they are a testament to God’s sustaining strength in the middle of fear and uncertainty.

Lily’s journey is equally compelling. As she wrestles with her present circumstances, she is forced to confront not only her past but also the foundation of her faith, her identity, and her future. Her story is a reminder that when our plans fall apart, God is often inviting us into a deeper trust in His purpose.

This is a clean, closed-door story, making it a refreshing choice for readers who appreciate wholesome, emotionally rich storytelling without unnecessary content. The focus remains where it truly matters—on family, healing, and the enduring power of love.

While the pacing may feel reflective at times, it ultimately serves the story well, allowing readers to sit with the emotions and truths being revealed. If anything, it invites you to slow down and consider the ways God is working in your own story.

Half Agony, Half Hope: The Dear Lily Edition is a tender, faith-affirming read about resilience, the bond between a father and daughter, and the hope that can rise even from the most painful seasons. It’s a beautiful reminder that even in life’s hardest moments, God is present—writing a story of redemption that is far from over.

Final Thoughts:
If you enjoy heartfelt stories grounded in faith, family, and second chances, this book is well worth your time. It will leave you reflecting on the power of sacrificial love—and the hope we find when we place our trust in God’s hands. Be warned, the emotions in this book made me tear up more than once.

So if you enjoy contemporary fiction, check out Half Agony, Half Hope: Dear Lily Edition by Joy Michelle Austin.

I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.

More from Joy

Half Agony, Half Hope was not a story I set out to write lightly.
It was an answer to a call God placed on my heart as a survivor of sexual assault—a call to tell the truth without exploiting it, and to create hope without diminishing the pain. From the beginning, I knew this would be a heavy debut novel. I also knew I wanted it to be clean, faith-centered, and redemptive.
The decision to tell this story through the eyes of a man was intentional. So few novels explore male survivors with compassion and dignity, yet one in six men are sexually assaulted. Their stories are often hidden, misunderstood, or minimized. Rick Wentworth’s journey exists to say plainly: healing is possible, faith is not erased by trauma, and masculinity is not diminished by suffering.
Because of the weight of Rick’s past, much of the abuse in Half Agony, Half Hope is veiled. I wanted readers to feel the truth of what he endured without being retraumatized themselves. Still, after the book released, readers told me they longed for more gentleness—more space to breathe inside the story.
That is how the Dear Lily Edition was born.
Lily was Rick’s hope and grace during the darkest years of his captivity. In the cellar, she was the reminder that love could still exist, that innocence could survive, and that God was not absent—even there. Their bond became the quiet heartbeat of the story: a wounded man learning how to hope again through the steady, healing love of a child.
At its core, Half Agony, Half Hope: Dear Lily Edition is a story of survival and faith—but it is also a story of a father and daughter choosing trust and hope despite hardship, and building a family where brokenness does not get the final word.

Along the way, they meet Nasiya, a young slave girl whose situation is both heartbreaking and urgent, giving the trio a mission that feels bigger than themselves.

But what makes this story truly stand out isn’t just the action—it’s the spiritual depth woven throughout. Stefan’s struggle with anger and guilt feels real and raw, and his journey becomes more than just a physical rescue mission. It becomes a picture of what it means to surrender brokenness to God. As danger closes in, it’s clear that faith isn’t just helpful—it’s essential.

The story beautifully reminds readers that God is not only at work in miraculous, life-changing moments but also in the quiet transformation of a wounded heart. Stefan’s journey reflects a deeper truth: healing, forgiveness, and redemption come when we allow God to work within us. It’s a message that resonates far beyond the pages, encouraging readers to examine their own hearts.

With its fast pace, vivid setting, and strong Christian themes, this book offers more than just an exciting escape—it offers hope. It’s a meaningful read for middle-grade audiences and families who want stories that reinforce faith while still delivering adventure and suspense.

This is more than a time-travel story—it’s a reminder that no matter where we find ourselves, God is present, and the greatest miracle He performs is often the one within us.

So if you want a middle-grade action-adventure story, check out How to Make a Miracle by Carol Schlorff and the rest of the How to Be a Hero series.

I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.

About the Author

Carol’s passion is to write exciting stories that encourage, inspire, and boost the reader’s faith, possibly because she has always felt like an outsider. She was born in North Africa to American parents and grew up in France. At age 15, her family’s abrupt move to Philadelphia resulted in a rough transition to American life.

After graduating from Penn State, Carol joined the Army in search of adventure. She was stationed in exotic—for her—locations like California, Arizona, and Texas.

Since then, Carol has lived in Krakow, Poland, where she teaches English and organizes language camps. She also writes a blog on faith-related topics.

Carol enjoys watching or reading a good murder mystery and getting nervous while watching NFL games.

More from Carol

The idea for a middle-grade novel came to me while I was listening to a series of sermons on meditating on God’s Word. How could I show that the Bible is exciting, far from boring, relevant to our lives, and has the answers we seek about our purpose in life? And do so in a way that is fun and intriguing, keeping the readers on the edge of their seats? Write a time-travel adventure into the Bible, of course! Granted, the premise may not be new, but I aimed to write it in a way that is fresh and stimulating, giving valuable insights into the Bible.

The result of this crazy idea is the How to Be a Hero series, of which How to Make a Miracle is the second installment, although each book can be read as a standalone novel.

I targeted middle-grade readers because it’s an awkward age when young people begin to question what their parents have taught them and seek answers for themselves (speaking from experience, here). If my books can encourage them in their faith, I will consider my writing a success.

I chose the book themes based on issues young people struggle with. How to Make a Miracle addresses the problem of anger, bitterness, and unforgiveness, which I don’t need to tell you are far too prevalent in our society. The solution is forgiveness—and we all need to learn how to forgive each other, regardless of age.

Mail-Order Baroness ~ A Review & Giveaway

About the Book

Book: Mail-Order Baroness

Author: Misty M. Beller

Genre: Christian Historical Romance

Release Date: February 10, 2026

Five sons of an English duke, all raised in the Rocky Mountains…

James Balfour, the charming middle son of an English duke, is determined to prove he’s capable of taking leadership of his family’s Montana ranch as the next deadly winter approaches. With the household stretched to its limits, James crafts a clever plan to hire Rose Prescott—his childhood best friend—and to right an old wrong.

Rose’s remarkable singing voice was meant to be her gift, but in Virginia City, it’s become her curse. Forced by her stepfather to perform nightly shows, she dreams of escape and a life free from his control. When a newspaper ad for a housekeeper offers her a way out, she risks everything and flees, hoping her stepfather can’t find her. She never expected to return to the Balfour ranch, nor to see James again, whose charm now reminds her too much of the men who’ve betrayed her before.

James’s desire to protect Rose is shaken when his old friend treats him like an enemy. Winning her trust becomes his greatest challenge yet. As tensions rise on the ranch, old secrets and new dangers threaten everything James and his family have built.

With enemies closing in, Rose must decide whom she can trust—and whether she’s willing to fight for the freedom and love she’s always longed for.

From a USA Today bestselling author comes a royal family saga featuring a mail-order bride, a second chance romance, and an aristocratic marriage of convenience…all set in the rugged Montana Territory.

Mail-Order Baroness by Misty M. Beller is the second book in the Lords of the Rockies series. This Christian Historical Romance grabbed my attention from the very first page.

A Sweeping Western Romance Filled with Family Loyalty, Healing, and Second Chances

If you love historical romance with rich family dynamics, emotional tension, and a rugged frontier setting, this story delivers all three in a compelling way. Set against the backdrop of Montana Territory, it blends aristocratic intrigue with the grit of ranch life, creating a romance that feels both tender and high-stakes.

At the center of the story is James Balfour, the charming middle son of an English duke, who is determined to prove himself worthy of leadership on his family’s Montana ranch. With winter approaching and pressure building, James is already carrying plenty of responsibility. Bringing Rose Prescott back into his world only deepens the emotional weight of everything he’s facing.

Rose is an especially sympathetic heroine. Her longing for freedom and safety gives the story immediate emotional depth, and her journey from fear to hope is one of the strongest elements of the book. Having endured betrayal and control, she doesn’t easily trust James, even though they share a past. That hesitation gives their relationship a believable tension that makes the romance more satisfying as it unfolds.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of the novel is the second-chance element. James and Rose have history, but time, pain, and misunderstanding stand between them. Watching James try to earn back her trust adds heart to the story, and his protective instincts make him easy to root for. Their connection develops with a blend of sweetness and emotional conflict that keeps the pages turning.

The family saga element also adds a lot of charm. The idea of five sons of an English duke being raised in the Rocky Mountains is a fun premise that gives the story a unique flavor. The ranch setting feels vivid and demanding, while the hints of old secrets, outside threats, and social expectations raise the stakes beyond the central romance.

Readers who enjoy marriage-of-convenience themes, frontier romance, and stories about finding both love and belonging will likely find much to enjoy here. The book offers danger, emotional wounds, and a heroine fighting for her future, all set against a backdrop that feels adventurous and romantic.

Overall, this is a heartfelt historical romance with strong emotional undercurrents, a memorable setting, and a couple worth cheering for. It’s a lovely pick for readers who enjoy stories of redemption, resilience, and love fought for.

So if you enjoy Christian Historical Romances, check out Mail-Order Baroness by Misty M. Beller, and the rest of the Lords of the Rockies series.

I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.

More from Misty

Hello Reader Friends!

I’m so excited to be back with you in the Lords of the Rockies world—where Regency roots and Montana grit collide in the best kind of way.

When I first dreamed up this series, I couldn’t stop thinking about what would happen if five sons of an English duke were raised far from ballrooms and titled expectations…out in the wide-open wilderness instead. No polished drawing rooms. No London Season. Just rugged mountains, hard work, and the kind of faith that’s tested (and strengthened) when survival itself requires perseverance.

And now I’m thrilled to share the newest installment with you…

Welcome to Mail-Order Baroness!

One of my favorite things about writing romance is getting to explore the truth that God is always in the business of redemption—of taking what’s been broken and offering something new. That’s one reason I especially love the second-chance romance trope.

There’s just something so moving about two people who have already been hurt—by life, by circumstances, sometimes even by each other—and yet are given an unexpected opportunity to try again. Not because everything is suddenly easy, but because they’re different now. Wiser. Humbled. More aware of what truly matters.

In Mail-Order Baroness, you’ll find a love story rooted in that kind of hope—the kind that doesn’t ignore the past, but doesn’t let the past have the final word either.

If you enjoy stories with:

  • old wounds that still ache
  • hard-earned forgiveness
  • trust rebuilt one choice at a time
  • and the gentle reminder that God can restore what feels beyond saving

…then I think this one will tug at your heart.

At its core, this book is about a fresh start that doesn’t come from pretending yesterday didn’t happen—but from bravely stepping forward anyway, learning to hope again, and discovering that the Lord can write something beautiful even after disappointment.

I pray you love Mail-Order Baroness! J

Blessings!

Misty

Beginnings….

Some might wonder why I chose to start a prayer blog entitled, JourneyWomanPrayers. Well, I guess you could say I fell off a cliff. Not literally, but sometimes the tumult of these past few years has felt like a wild freefall—a crazy journey—and the world still feels that way!

As I see ongoing global chaos, violence, fear, and loneliness, my prayer life has become more raw and real than ever before. I no longer come to the foot of the cross with a list; I come with a soul ready to listen. Since sometimes it’s hard to know truth from lies in our world, I’m hungrier than ever for God’s truth. As I watch the culture collapse, social media explode, and our nation divide, the need becomes greater in me for those quiet waters and green pastures—and those daily visits with Jesus. He will lead me to what is tranquil, genuine, and hope-filled—what is redemptive, miraculous, and eternal.

And then I thought, “I wonder if these ongoing prayers would resonate with anyone else?” And so, that it is how JourneyWomanPrayers came to be born. Please join me, and together we will pray, and we will dance this sacred dance with God…

I Saw a Fox!

How many are your works, Lord!
In wisdom you made them all;
the earth is full of your creatures.
Psalm 104:24 (NIV)

Lord, I saw a fox today near our house. It had a reddish hue with a fluffy tail, and it trotted along
with regal style. But then he spotted me and vanished into the woods.
But it made me think of Your Psalm when it says how the earth is so full of Your creatures. I love
the way You placed such a vast array of unique living things for us to delight in and wonder over.
I never tire of Your sublime handiwork. With all my heart, I thank You.

Questions for Pondering…
What are the animals that have become my favorites over the years and why?
Is God pleased when I appreciate and find delight in His glorious works?

This reflection beautifully points to God as Creator.

I love how this turns a simple sighting into a moment of worship.

What a lovely reminder that creation reflects God’s glory.

This response shows such gratitude for God’s handiwork.

I appreciate the clear connection between nature and praise.

This is a beautiful picture of delighting in God’s creation.

What a meaningful reminder of God’s wisdom and creativity.

I love how this reflection turns wonder into worship.

This response beautifully honors the Lord through creation.

A simple but powerful reminder that all creation points back to God.

Stars in Her Eyes by Erica Vetsch is a Christian Historical Romance. This book is the ninth book in the Brides of the West series.

Stories about faith and love often explore what happens when the heart and expectations collide, and this novel leans fully into that tension. With a small-town church, a passionate minister, and an actress searching for her place in the world, the story centers on two people who must decide whether to follow God’s call, even at the cost of their own lives.

Pastor Silas Hamilton chose a path very different from the one his father envisioned for him. Determined to follow God’s leading, he accepts a position at a small Colorado church and pours himself into serving the congregation. Everything seems steady until Willow Starr arrives in town. Willow is a talented actress whose life has always revolved around the theater, and Silas quickly realizes that his feelings for her run deeper than he expected. Unfortunately, not everyone in his church shares his openness. Suspicion and prejudice begin to surface, leaving Silas caught between the woman he loves and the congregation he feels called to lead.

Willow Starr has always known the stage. Raised in a theatrical family and overshadowed by a controlling sister, acting is the only life she’s ever imagined. Yet meeting Silas awakens something new in her—a longing for a future that isn’t defined by applause or scripts. Just as she begins to consider what that future might look like, a career-changing opportunity in New York appears. Faced with a chance to achieve everything she has worked toward, Willow must wrestle with whether she is ready to leave her old life behind for something far more uncertain.

The story does a beautiful job of highlighting themes of faith, calling, and the courage it takes to step outside society’s expectations. The tension between the church community and Willow’s profession adds a layer of realism, keeping the conflict engaging. Rumors, misunderstandings, and the pressure of public opinion all play significant roles in testing both Silas and Willow’s faith and commitment to one another.

One of the book’s strengths is its exploration of prejudice within a faith community. It raises thoughtful questions about grace, judgment, and how easily people can forget the very compassion they claim to represent. Watching Silas wrestle with his responsibility as a pastor while trying to follow his heart makes for a compelling emotional journey.

While the romance is central to the plot, the deeper message about trusting God’s plan stands out the most. Silas and Willow both face choices that could reshape their futures, and their willingness to seek God’s direction adds depth to the story.

Overall, this is a heartfelt and faith-filled novel about love, calling, and the courage to pursue the life God places before us—even when others question the path. Readers who enjoy inspirational romance with meaningful spiritual themes will likely find this story both encouraging and thought-provoking.

So if you enjoy Christian Historical Romances, check out Stars in Her Eyes by Erica Vetsch.

I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.

About the Author

Best-selling, award-winning author of The Debutante’s Code, first in the Thorndike & Swann Regency Mystery Series, Erica Vetsch loves Jesus, history, romance, and sports. When she’s not writing fiction, she’s planning her next trip to a history museum.

More from Erica

One of the questions I often get as an author is, “Where do your ideas come from?”

The answer is “All over!”

I often get ideas while watching movies or reading books, delving into history books, visiting historical sites, or daydreaming.

For the story Stars in Her Eyes, the idea came from a photograph. A portrait of a pretty girl. Her name was Maude Adams, and her photograph stayed in my mind for a long time.

Those gray eyes, the regal tilt to her chin, the ‘touch-me-not’ expression.

Willow Starr was born.

Stars in her Eyes is the third book in a trilogy set in a mining town in Colorado. Such boomtowns had acting troupes moving through to entertain the minors and bring a bit of ‘class’ to those who were making their fortunes.

So of course, I had to imagine the least likely person to fall in love with an actress. A pastor.

Silas has a rare ability to see the talents of others, not as a threat or oddity, but as a potential asset to the church. He believes that God gifts individuals for the purpose of edifying the church, and that God’s people are found everywhere, even on a lamplit stage.

The Convict’s Courtship ~A Review & Giveaway

About the Book

Book: The Convict’s Courtship

Author: KyLee Woodley

Genre: Christian Historical Romance

Release Date: March 3, 2026

A remote mining town, an aspiring journalist, and the reformed convict who saves her life.

When Clara Alexander returned from finishing school to Virginia City she had two goals: to become a reporter and make peace with the father who betrayed her mother. But even in the West, there is no room for her in the newsroom or in the family her father made when he married his mistress. Clara is forced to take desperate measures to prove her worth to an editor—including a reckless venture into a dangerous mine shaft.

Reformed convict Beau Vulpe lives a quiet life of obscurity in a remote mining town in Nevada. When he rescues a beautiful woman from a sweltering mine shaft, he’s welcomed into her home as a hero, only to discover that they are the same family he deeply wronged the summer before. Now, with winter’s grip choking the mountain town and rumors of mines going bust, he is forced to stay, praying Clara won’t discover the truth before the spring thaw.

As Clara pursues her dreams of writing for the renowned Territorial Enterprise, she continually crosses paths with the mysterious Frenchman who saved her life and is drawn to him a little more with each interaction. Beau finds himself not only falling for the lovely lady but befriending her family as well. Can he protect his freedom and atone for his wrongs without losing his heart in the process? And what about Clara—will her attraction toward Beau Vulpe lead to the disappointment her mother warned her about?

Click here to get your copy!

The Convict’s Courtship by KyLee Woodley is a Christian Historical Romance.

Set in the rugged mining town of Virginia City, this historical romance follows Clara Alexander, a young woman determined to become a journalist despite the limitations placed on women of her time. Returning home from finishing school, Clara hopes to repair her strained relationship with her father while also pursuing her dream of writing for the Territorial Enterprise. Unfortunately, neither goal comes easily. Her father has remarried the woman who caused her parents’ separation, and the local newsroom has little interest in hiring a female reporter.

Clara’s determination leads her to take a dangerous risk in an attempt to prove herself to an editor, resulting in a reckless trip into a mine shaft that nearly costs her life. Thankfully, she is rescued by Beau Vulpe, a quiet man with a mysterious past.

Beau is a reformed convict trying to keep a low profile in the Nevada mining town. His act of heroism brings him into Clara’s world, but it also places him dangerously close to the very family he wronged the previous summer. As Beau grows closer to Clara and her family, he wrestles with guilt and the fear that the truth about his past will eventually come to light.

There were several elements of this story that I genuinely enjoyed. The historical setting of Virginia City and the mining culture added an interesting backdrop, and Clara’s ambition to become a journalist made her an engaging and determined heroine. Her persistence in the face of rejection was one of the story’s stronger elements.

Beau’s character was also intriguing, especially his struggle with redemption and his desire to live differently than he had in the past. His internal conflict added depth and helped create some of the book’s most compelling moments.

That said, some parts of the story moved more slowly than expected, and certain plot points felt a bit predictable. There were moments when the pacing lagged for me, which made it harder to stay fully invested in the story. While the romance between Clara and Beau had its sweet moments, some parts of the book didn’t always feel as developed as they could have been.

Even so, the novel does offer meaningful themes of forgiveness, second chances, and the possibility of redemption. Readers who enjoy Western settings and stories about overcoming past mistakes may still find parts of this book appealing.

Overall, while the story had some strong characters and an interesting historical setting, it was a mixed reading experience. Still, fans of historical Christian romance may appreciate the themes of grace, perseverance, and the hope of a fresh start.

So if you enjoy Christian Historical Romances, check out The Convict’s Courtship by KyLee Woodley.

I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.

A Heart in Exile: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at the Heroine

We all carry “wounds”—those hurts from our past that shape how we see the world today. For Clara, my heroine in The Convict’s Courtship, that wound is deep and it’s personal.

In her youth, Clara loved to write fanciful stories. With a love of history and a strong faith in God, she strove as a teen to write Bible studies for young ladies. But she comes from a troubled home, the daughter of an impulsive father and a mother she believes died of a broken heart after her father’s betrayal. Weeks after her mother’s death, her father married his mistress, who gave birth to a baby boy just months later. At this point, a sixteen-year-old Clara hoped they might finally be a family, only to be sent away to an elite boarding school—Miss Porter’s School. This was the same prestigious school attended by Nellie Grant, President Grant’s daughter. Everyone said her father sent her there out of love, but Clara knew better. It was time for Clara to grow up.

During her time in the East, she discovered the pioneering work of 19th-century female journalists and activists like Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Jane Swisshelm, and Anne Newport Royall. She admired these strong women, seeing them as a stark contrast to her mother’s perceived weakness. This shift led Clara away from “fanciful” notions of hope toward a life built on facts, proof, and logic—so much so that rather than pray, she now seeks guidance through the analytical study of the Bible.

After four years of exile, Clara returns to a Virginia City that is soon decimated by the Great Fire of 1875.

Now, she must find a way to reconcile her mother’s memory, her own search for significance, and her desire for a family. It is among the ruins of the city and of her family that she encounters Monsieur Beau Vulpe—a convict on the run with deep wounds of his own and a secret connection to her family that makes her the last woman in the world he would choose to love. Will the mysterious Frenchman be part of her healing or her final ruin?

Clara’s journey is one of healing, hard truths, and finding hope in the midst of the ashes. Have you ever had to face a “wound” from your past that felt impossible to heal? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments. And if you’re ready to see how Clara and Beau’s story unfolds, you’ll want to read The Convict’s Courtship.

Extinguishing flames on C Street While this picture does not depict the actual fire in 1875, it does show how the fire department and the town fought the flames. Source: The Historic Fourth Ward School Museum. http://fourthwardschool.org/events/virginia-citys-great-fire-of-1875/.

Fear, Faith, & Freedom ~ A Celebrate Lit Spotlight Tour

About the Book

Book: Fear, Faith, & Freedom, Breaking Through Life’s Challenges with God’s Help

Author: Jenn Dafoe-Turner

Genre: Christian Memoir/Devotional

Release Date: November 25, 2025

Fear, Faith, and Freedom: Breaking Through Life’s Battles with God’s Help is a raw, redemptive journey from despair to deliverance. With deep vulnerability and spiritual clarity, author Jenn Dafoe-Turner invites readers into her story of pain, trauma, addiction, and ultimately, transformation through the power of Jesus Christ. Blending compelling personal narrative with creative retellings of Scripture, this book offers readers more than a testimony—it offers a path toward healing and wholeness.

Each chapter explores a different “battle” of life—fear, addiction, shame, identity, self-sabotage, church hurt, and more—and how God’s truth can bring lasting victory. Through heartfelt storytelling, biblical wisdom, and practical reflection, Jenn shows that freedom isn’t found in fixing ourselves but in surrendering completely to the One who sets captives free.

Structured as a spiritual memoir with devotional elements, each chapter concludes with a “gentle challenge,” reflection questions, a Scripture memory verse, and a heartfelt prayer. This format makes the book ideal for personal study, recovery groups, or women’s ministry settings.

Whether you are struggling with your own dark night of the soul or mentoring others through theirs, Fear, Faith, and Freedom will remind you that no battle is too great for God. His love meets us in the most broken places—and leads us, one step at a time, into a life marked by courage, hope, and the certainty of His grace.

Fear, Faith & Freedom: Why This Book Had to Be Written

There are moments in life when fear speaks louder than faith.

Moments when freedom feels distant.

Moments when we wonder if God is still working—even here.

Fear, Faith & Freedom: Breaking Through Life’s Challenges with God’s Help was written for those moments.

I didn’t write this book because I had life figured out. I wrote it because I didn’t.

Why I Wrote Fear, Faith & Freedom

This book was born out of lived experience—through seasons of uncertainty, surrender, recovery, and deep wrestling with God. I have walked through fear that felt paralyzing, faith that felt fragile, and freedom that came one step at a time.

For years, I carried the quiet question many believers hold close to their hearts: Why, God? Why this path? Why this pain? Why me?

What I discovered is that God often does His deepest work not in the absence of fear, but in the midst of it. Faith isn’t about having all the answers—it’s about learning to trust the One who does. And freedom isn’t a single moment; it’s a journey of daily choosing truth over lies.

This book is my offering to those who feel stuck between where they are and where they long to be.

What’s Inside the Book

Fear, Faith & Freedom is part devotional, part reflection, and part invitation.

Inside these pages, readers will find:

  • Honest stories of struggle, surrender, and spiritual growth
  • Biblical insights that meet real-life challenges head-on
  • Reflective prompts that invite readers to pause, pray, and engage personally
  • Encouragement without platitudes—because healing doesn’t happen through clichés
  • A clear message of hope: God is present, purposeful, and faithful, even in the mess

Rather than offering quick fixes, this book walks alongside readers, reminding them that God’s help is not distant or delayed—He is near, attentive, and deeply compassionate.

What Readers Can Expect

Who This Book Is For

Fear, Faith & Freedom is for:

  • The believer who feels weary but the seeker who wants faith that feels real, not rehearsed
  • The reader who needs reassurance that God still shows up
  • Anyone ready to move forward—even if they’re taking small steps
