Josh's 16th birthday !

January 12th was Josh's 16th birthday. We gave him the option to go out to eat wherever he wanted and instead he chose his mom's Cheeseburger Pie (for those who are interested and know my culinary skill level....the recipe is on the Bisquik box). We did have cake and ice cream with the Hansen's and then again with the Virchow's. Josh had been saving his money and asked if he could put that, plus a little money from mom and dad, towards a PSP. He also wanted sheet music for the violin and piano.

Happy New Year!
_____________
Although 2008 has been filled with trials that were unexpected I still find myself feeling very blessed. I have so many things to be grateful for despite what our family is going through. I have had so many friends call me to see how we are doing. I have had friends bring me a drink =) when they knew I wouldn't be able to get out of the house. I've had dinners brought to us just because. I've had friends at work offer to cover shifts for me when I haven't been able to leave home in the evening. My neighbor across the street takes my garbage cans out for me each week. Another neighbor has made sure whenever it snows that my driveway gets shoveled before I take my kids to school.

I am discovering there are still things Heavenly Father wants me to learn. This earth life is a continual refining process. Each trial I've gone through has given me a better perspective and taught me to be more empathetic to others who have gone through something similar. By sharing parts of my experiences with others I'm finding that everyone is going through a trial of one kind or another and we need to be there for each other. We have opportunities to serve every day. I'm trying to do a better job of serving others. It's easy to get so wrapped up in my current situation that I forget everyone around me has something they're trying to deal with and understand.

There are three talks from the October session of General Conference I am trying to remember and implement in my day to day life. The first talk was by Elder Neil L. Andersen, "You Know Enough." No matter how much I don't understand or feel like I don't know, I need to remind myself I know enough. I know enough about prayer. I know enough about faith. I know enough about going to the temple for personal revelation. I may not know everything, but I know enough.

The second talk was by Elder David A. Bednar, "Pray Always." He shared a story about a time when he had a General Authority staying with them while he was president of BYU-Idaho. The same day the General Authority had come they had learned one of their friends had died unexpectedly. The General Authority didn't know about this bad news and when they gave their evening prayer he asked Sister Bednar to only express gratitude and ask for nothing. Her prayer included gratitude for experiences they had shared with this friend, gratitude for the Holy Ghost and for the plan of salvation. Despite everything going on in my marriage right now I still have a lot to be grateful for. I am grateful for four, healthy, beautiful kids; for my mom and dad and my siblings who all live close by and are always willing to help me; for friends who have taken such good care of me...physically and emotionally; and for the gospel.

The third talk was given by Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, "The Ministry of Angels." He said whether angels are "....seen or unseen they are always near."
"Not all angels are from the other side of the veil. Some of them we walk with and talk with -- here, now, every day. Some of them reside in our own neighborhoods. Some of them gave birth to us...."
"Indeed heaven never seems closer than when we see the love of God manifested in the kindness and devotion of people so good and so pure that angelic is the only word that comes to mind."
"...may we all try to be a little more angelic ourselves - with a kind word, a strong arm, a declaration of faith..."
I have been blessed to have many earthly angels in my life in friends and family.

President Monson said that "....what is most important almost always involves the people around us."
"Despite the changes which come into our lives...may we fill our days - as much as we can - with those things which matter most."
"...express our gratitude always and thus find joy in the journey."

Some of my resolutions for the new year include...
*being a better friend - I want to be the friend who makes the phone call when prompted by the spirit and the friend who can be called for a favor any time
*pray more - now, more than ever, I rely on heavenly guidance and I can't have that guidance if I'm not talking with my Heavenly Father every day
*attend the temple regularly - at least once a month
*be a more patient mother - I want my kids to feel peace when they are at home
*renew old friendships - I want to get in touch with friends from high school and college who I still think about and who left me a better person
*help my kids be each others friends - I want to spend more time with our immediate family taking small trips or trying new hobbies or sports

Thanks to my friends and family who have brought me joy this year.
My goal is to find as much joy as possible in 2009!

Merry Christmas everyone!

6:00 a.m. Christmas morning!

Grace loved her new Didj!

Willow had to hunt for her ringing cell phone, but the look on her face makes it plain to see she loved it.

7:00 a.m. Christmas morning!
Grace got mad at Josh for making her wake up so early.

Later that same day....
Harrison and Weston at Grandma Virchow's house finishing the gingerbread houses we made 4 days earlier.

Grace and Garrett "decorating" their houses.

Willow carefully lining her roof with Necco's.

Christmas morning was supposed to begin at 7 a.m. After going to bed at 2 a.m. I was awakened at 6 a.m. by Willow and Weston begging me to get out of bed. They told me the presents had all been divided and they'd already played with the toys in their stockings. All of the toys in their stockings are from mom and dad and can be opened before mom and dad get out of bed. The intention is to keep them occupied for a while to give the adults more time to sleep. Their stockings also include a couple of small boxes of cereal to keep mom from having to fix breakfast.

The kids all got the toys they most wanted, even mom, who got the purse she'd wanted. We all had new clothes to wear, DVD's to watch and games to play. It was a very good Christmas morning. Grandma and Grandpa Hansen came to see us and bring gifts for the kids at about 11 a.m. They were trying to beat the snow storm we knew would be coming our way, so they were only able to stay for a short time.

Our original Christmas Day plans included driving to Benjamin to see Grandpa Virchow and Linda and then driving from there to Springville to spend the rest of the day at Grandma Virchow's. The snow kept us at home all day. It was so nice to spend the day relaxing, taking a nap, and enjoying all the new gifts.
At about 4 p.m. Kenyon decided we should probably go to Grandma Virchow's after all. The weather had cleared up for the most part, so the drive wasn't too bad. We had dinner with Kenyon's family and the kids were able to decorate their gingerbread houses. The kids also got to open presents from Grandma Virchow and one of their cousins. At 10:30 we decided to head home and opened the door to find a winter wonderland....3 inches of fresh snow and it didn't look like the snow was going to stop any time soon. We had to get a push to get going, but then we were able to get home an hour later instead of the usual 30 minutes. I was just happy to be home safely.

We hope you all had a Merry Christmas and enjoyed time with family and friends. Thank you for all you do for our family.

We missed Grace who was home sick with the flu. =(

Weston and his best friend, Chandler, in matching hats.
(From the back you can't tell the two of them apart.)

Grandma and Grandpa holding Harper.
Harper was 20 days old today.

Ivy, Lori, Alex and Darren

Ginger and Scarlet

Holly holding Atticus.
Atticus was asking when he could ride in my car and watch a show.
(I keep telling myself I'm his favorite aunt and that it has nothing to do with the DVD player in my van or my endless candy supply.)

The Hansen Family Party was hosted by Darren and Lori at their home in Salt Lake. They have lots of room for the kids to play. We had a fantastic dinner followed by my sister-in-law's coconut cake. This cake is a favorite of mine and I usually eat it until I'm sick. Uncomfortable, yes, but well worth it.

This year we exchanged family gifts instead of individual gifts.

I love my family and feel very blessed to have them all so close by and always so willing to help.

The Virchow Family Party was at Nick and Aly's new home in Lehi. Jared and Amanda and Max were able to drive down and spend the evening with us. Max's adoption was just finalized in December. The kids were so excited to hold him. He is the happiest baby we have known. After dinner we played musical presents and danced to Christmas music and then.....Santa appeared! Most of the kids were overjoyed, but a couple of the cousins burst into tears and ran for protection from their parents. Each of the grandkids got to sit on Santa's lap and tell him their Christmas Wish. The kids had so much fun talking to Santa that we ran out of time to decorate our gingerbread houses.
