Back home!

Here we are all together, the four Andersons!

To recap the rest of the trip in Guatemala:  we were able to pickup the visa at the Embassy just fine, no problems at all.  We showed up at the Embassy at 3:30, went through security again, and waited in the very crowded room.  Mostly we just paced around since the seats were rather full, and Erik is happier when he is moving.  After a short wait, they called our name, gave us the visa and the big manila envelope (don't open it!), and set us on our way!  So happy there were no snags!

Then on Friday morning, I thought maybe I'd try to do a little souvenir shopping at the hotel next door, but it never was open.  Don't quite understand that. Then the dad from Columbia, MO, offered to walk to some shops with me.  I put Erik in the sling, which he just loves, and headed out.  The dad had been shopping before, so new right where to take me.  The shop even took credit card!  It was slightly more expensive than if I had had cash, but not significantly.  Plus, I think she gave me a volume discount!!  I wanted to make sure to get some keepsakes from Guatemala for both Mario and Erik, so got two of a lot of things:  Nativity scenes, outfits, blankets, and a little purse for me.  I'm very happy I was able to stuff it in the suitcases!  I could have bought more, but am glad I stopped where I did, since not even one tiny stitch of anything could have fit in the suitcases.

Soon it was time to leave for the airport.  I had a lot of stuff to schlep, but it worked out ok, thanks to the kindness of strangers.  Erik's plane ticket cost a lot more than what I had been quoted prior to the trip, but whatever.  No choice in the matter, so here you go, put it on the card.  Eventually got on the plane.  Had Erik's bottle all ready for takeoff.  We start taxiing down the runway, Erik is settled in my arms, I give him the bottle, and all is well.  We lift off the ground, and Erik pauses from the bottle.  He looks around with this absolutely delighted expression on his face, and makes a sound that I can only describe as a happy contented delighted sigh.  He goes back to the bottle, gives me a great burb, and falls asleep.  He slept the entire flight to Miami.  Stirred only we were just about ready to touch down and woke all the way up, but didn't cry.  What a good baby!

I waited until practically everyone else was off the plane since I was not travelling light by any means.  Got Erik in the umbrella stroller, grabbed the diaper/toy bag, and started the walk to customs and immigration.  It had been suggested to me to avoid the Miami airport and to travel through Dallas like we did with Mario, but I really had no choice in the matter.  I was not looking forward to trying to go through customs with all the luggage and Erik, but I think the officials must have taken one look at me and decided I was probably the lowest level of security threat possible and just waved me through.  Fine by me!  Next immigration.  Again, I thought this would take forever.  There were hundreds of people in front of me in about thirty lines.  I didn't even know which line to get in since it was so hard to see what it said at the counter at the front of the line.  I asked someone, and they told me which line to get in.  I was there all of about ten seconds when someone else came over and said oh you're traveling with a baby.  You can go over here to special services.  About twenty feet behind me there was a little box room, with an elderly lady in a wheelchair sitting outside it, and about five immigration officials standing there.  They came up to me, looked at our passports, and checked us through.  They told me to go into such and such a room, and so we did, we waited there maybe ten minutes, gave the manila envelope to the official, and were on our way!  Awesome!  It a better experience even than Dallas, and I can't even complain about Dallas a tiny bit.

Then Erik and I just had to wait until our connection to St. Louis.  The flight was delayed, so we just waited as best we could.  I tried to find a somewhat quiet and dark area to sit so that he could get some sleep, but it was just too bright and too noisy everywhere.  After a long wait, our flight was called, we got on and settled in.  As soon as the lights went low, Erik popped right back to sleep.  Good boy!  Again, he slept the entire flight!  My arm was completely asleep, but it didn't matter.  I was not going to wake him even a little bit if I didn't have to.

It was well after midnight by the time we landed in St. Louis.  Was so happy to see Daddy!! Michelle was there too!!!  Great to see her, and it was so kind of her to be there and keep Jerry company waiting for our very late flight.  Babkie was at home with the sleeping Mario.

So good to be home!!!

Thursday morning

Another email:

Hi Daddy and Mario!

Erik slept better last night, but not a whole lot better.  Slept from 7:15 to 8:45 then woke up just briefly, then slept again until close to 11.  At that point, he woke up, and I couldn't get him back to sleep in the crib.  So it was another night on mommy's tummy.  I got more sleep than I did the previous night, but again not a lot more.  He is now asleep in the umbrella stroller, so again I thought I'd jot out a note.

Have met some other families, including one family from Columbia, MO, with a little girl, and adopting a toddler.  One lady said they have great souvenirs next door at La Casa Grande, so I am going to try to walk over later and see if there is anything I can get on credit card.  If not, I may be coming back mostly empty handed, except for Erik of course!

Met a couple last night who were waiting for their baby girl to be dropped off on a visit trip.  She is 4 months old, and this is the first time they are to see her.  I talked with them for a while, but went upstairs at around 7 to give Erik his final bottle, and at that point their baby still hadn't arrived.  She was over an hour late, and it so reminded me of when we came to pick up Mario, and he was so late.  Hopefully she did arrive last night.  The poor mother was so stressed out.

Hope all is going well there.  I miss you both.  I'll try to write more later, if I get the chance.  The hotel lobby is small, so the walks around and around don't take too much time.  At least we have the visa pickup at the embassy to look forward to.

Love you!

In Guate

This is an email I sent to Daddy and Mario:

HI!  HOPEFULLY YOU WILL RECOGNIZE THE ADDRESS THAT I'M SENDING FROM.  I HAD TO SET UP A YAHOO ACCOUNT TO GET ON THE COTW LISTSERVE.  I'M GLAD I DID SO THAT I CAN SEND YOU A MESSAGE NOW.

IT HAS BEEN A WILD 24 HOURS, THAT IS FOR SURE.  SORRY I CAN'T FIGURE OUT HOW TO TURN OFF THE CAPS LOCK.  THE KEYBOARD IS DIFFERENT, SPANISH, SO A LOT OF THE THINGS LOOK DIFFERENT.  HOPEFULLY SOMEONE WILL WALK BY AND HELP ME.  TOO BAD MY COMPUTER PROGRAMMER HUSBAND IS NOT HERE.  I CAN'T EVEN FIGURE OUT HOW TO WRITE AN EXCLAMATION POINT.  ALL CAPS AND NO EXCLAMATION POINT.  I AM HOPELESS.

ANYWAY, THE PLANE LANDED IN GUATEMALA CITY LAST NIGHT, AND BY THE TIME I GOT MY BAGS, AND WENT THROUGH CUSTOMS AND IMMIGRATION, IT WAS ABOUT 9:30.  THERE IS CONSTRUCTION GOING ON AT THE AIRPORT, SO THERE WASN'T THE SAME SET UP WHERE YOU WALK OUT INTO THAT BIG ROOM AND ALL THE PEOPLE ARE WATCHING FROM THE BALCONY.  INSTEAD, YOU WALK OUTSIDE, AND THERE ARE ALL THE PEOPLE WAITING BEHIND METAL BARRICADES.  SOME WITH SIGNS, AND LUCKILY ONE SAID ANGELA ANDERSON.  VERY PAINLESS.  THE WHOLE SCENE WAS VERY FUNNY THOUGH.  ANYWAY, GOT INTO THE SHUTTLE AND DROVE TO THE HOTEL.  NOT A LONG DRIVE AT ALL, AND BELIEVE IT OR NOT, SOME OF THE PLACES ACTUALLY LOOKED FAMILIAR TO ME.  GOT TO THE HOTEL, AND IT IS ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL.  THE PROBABLY HAVE A WEBSITE SINCE THEY HAVE THIS COMPUTER SET UP IN THE LOBBY.  REALLY BEAUTIFUL HOTEL, AND THE STAFF ARE VERY FRIENDLY.

SINCE I WAS SO LATE GETTING IN, THEY TOLD ME HERE AT THE HOTEL THAT ERIK WOULDN'T COME UNTIL MORNING.  I WAS SAD, BUT IT WAS UNDERSTANDABLE, GIVEN THE HOUR.  BUT WHAT DO YOU KNOW AT ABOUT 10:30 THERE IS A KNOCK AT THE DOOR.  IT IS PACO AND SYLVIA AND BETTY AND ERIK.  BETTY WAS ERIK'S FOSTER MOTHER.  YOU WOULD RECOGNIZE HER FROM THE PHOTOS AND DVDS.  ERIK was still awake (as you have guessed, someone just walked by and turned off the caps lock for me).  I could not believe he was actually still awake.  He was ok for about 3 minutes and then started to cry.  I tried to feed him from the bottle they left.  No deal.  The only time he would stop crying is when I was walking around with him.  So we did that for much of the night.  At some point he fell asleep and so I was able to sit on the bed.  He woke right up.  Got him back to sleep and sat down on the bed verrrrrry caaaaaaarefully.  He had a restless night and kept waking up, looking at me, looking around the hotel room.  Poor little guy.  He got a few hours sleep.  I got considerably less, but it was ok.  Paco came by around 7:00 am, and we filled out the rest of the paperwork.  I'm sure it was the same form that you had to fill out last time.  It was the application for the visa.  Paco actually did most of it while I held Erik.  Then we walked over to the Embassy for our 8:15 appointment.  I think we were number 29 out of 35.  It was very crowded with lots of families.  Most of the kids were actually older than Erik, though a few were younger.  One lady's baby made it through PGN in 3 and a half weeks.  Anyway, so it was a long wait to make it up to the window, but we eventually got there.  All was in order, so I should be able to pick up the visa tomorrow afternoon.

Paid in cash at the embassy.  Figured I wouldn't have to carry around so much cash after that.  Unfortunately, it was only after leaving the embassy that Paco mentioned that if I wanted to have the protocolo and other paperwork translated into English, it would cost $250.  I didn't know that was going to happen, and was a little miffed.  I figure, we need to have it done, so he will bring it by tomorrow.  It was also a shame that I didn't know about the translation fee until after I had paid cash at the embassy.  So that leaves me with $40.  We'll need to have those documents in English to be able to do the readoption.  On well.  So I don't think I'll be able to do any souvenir shopping.

Erik was really good at the embassy.  I did something silly, and it actually made him laugh.  Something like putting his finger in my mouth.  After that, he was laughing a lot and smiling at everyone. He even fell asleep in his stroller for a while, something less than an hour, but hey anything was good.  I was picking him up over my head and he was laughing so loudly, it brought tears to my eyes.  I think everyone around us got a kick out of it.  And no, I was not putting on a show for them!

Anyway, walked back to the hotel and had breakfast (missed it earlier in the day).  Then went back up to the room and got Erik to take a little bit more of his bottle.  Put him in the sling, and he fell asleep.  Figured there was no way I could get him out of the sling and keep him asleep, so just loosened it a little bit, and lay him down on the bed and curled up next to him.  We both rested until Paco called on the phone.  Oh well, but it was at least an hour nap.  Erik is still crying a fair bit, but he is being amazingly good now as I sit at this keyboard with him on my lap.  Not a tear at all.  I figured I would just keep typing until he cried, and how I have written a novel.  Paco had wanted to know if I wanted to meet him for diner, but I think I am just too tired to do that.  Hopefully I'll be able to get Erik in the bed tonight.  It is a regular crib, though the setting is way low.  I don't want to monkey with it and end up not being able to get it to work.

Anyway, I think Erik has been patient long enough.  I hope this makes it to you.  Love you and Mario!

See you Friday!

PINK!!! PINK!!! PINK!!!

The best of news today!  We got the beloved pink slip, and our appointment is set at the Embassy for Wednesday, January 16th.  Just five days away!!  I fly on Tuesday, arrive in the evening, get you, and go to the Embassy the next morning.  Then hopefully we'll get the visa the following afternoon, and fly home on Friday.  I have to fly through Miami both ways, which is apparently a busier airport than Dallas, but it was the only way to make it work.  Just couldn't get the flights to work through Dallas.  But it will all be ok, because I'll get to see you, and hold you, and squeeze you, and kiss you, and bring you home!!!

Also, I'm traveling alone to get you.  Daddy will stay home with Mario.  It will be harder this way, but it is going to work.

Yay! We've got a birth certificate!

You are eight months old today, sweet Erik.  I wish I could hold you today, but now I know it will be very soon.  The only thing we are waiting on now is for the pink slip and the appointment to be set at the Embassy.

You are up to 17 1/2 pounds, 75 cm in length, and 43 cm in head circumference.
