It's only been a fairly recent development for Louisa, but she is really starting to enjoy having stories read to her. For the
longest time, she was only really interested in destroying books. Perhaps Mike and I could have been better about consistently sitting down and at least trying to read her something, but admittedly we didn't seem to have the patience with her insistence on grabbing the books and putting them in her mouth. Of course, she is almost 2 1/2 now, so this tendency seems to be mostly gone, however, we still have to be careful leaving her with books unattended.
As a child, I adored reading. I recall being physically unable to fall asleep until I had read a stack of books to myself in bed. I credit it to my nature, but also to my mom who did a good job reading to me from the very beginning. I have so many childhood favorites. I have been quietly smuggling some of them from my mom and dad's. Shhhh...don't tell her! (yeah right, my mom is one of the biggest readers of this blog, I think. But mostly for the pictures) Anyway, I am so excited to share these books with my own children. What a unique joy of parenting it is to be able to share with them your childhood loves...
A vintage copy of Runaway Bunny. Who didn't love this book as a child? And The Man who Never Did His Dishes was actually my dad's book as a child!
we actually have quite a few of those relics!
The Penguin Who Hated the Cold.
He ended up living on a paradise island in the end, of course.
Winnie the Pooh
My Father's Dragon. This is a chapter book that I must have read a thousand times. When I was teaching, I read it to my First and Second graders and they loved it so much. It's still a bit old for Lou, but I am really looking forward to the day she gets to hear it for the first time!
My hope, like many parents, is to foster a love for reading in my children. I have so many favorite...I hope Louisa enjoys some of them as much as I did.
Do you have many favorite books from your childhood? One fun thing to do is to look through the Children's section of the library. You might be surprised at how many books catch your eye as ones you remember reading.
