2021 Year in Review

Here's our year in review:
  • I read 55 books, down from 69 last year.
  • Kids had 1 delay and 4 "snow days" from school. Since there were online school capabilities in the spring semester, they never had a true snow day. They are hoping for some true snow days in 2022!
  • Band was able to have a middle school and a high school concert in the spring (although Jenna missed hers due to quarantine and it was sweet to have a do-over after May band camp). They were also able to have Christmas concerts which were really fun.
  • Jenna started marching band and there was an actual marching band season this year! 7 football games (the team did really well in the playoffs). Harrison, Regionals, and State competitions. 2A State Champions!! And, countless hours of practice!
  • Jenna had her first date to a Homecoming Dance.
  • Continual frustrations with the COVID-19 virus, but a little more freedom. In-person school with the exception of Jenna having COVID in September and the entire high school closure for a bit after the Homecoming dance.
  • We were able to visit Estes Park, Wichita, Branson, Lubbock (Jenna), Florida, Winter Park, and Wichita and Estes (again).
  • Jenna and Kellen rode their first roller coasters.
  • We all saw Manatees up close in the wild.
  • Jenna went to Summer Excitement. And Kellen went to Camp Como.
  • Jenna went rafting for the first time. And, Kevin, Jenna, and Kellen went ziplining.
  • Our beloved hedgehog, Cosmo died. As well as three hamsters - Victor Gimli, Snickers, and Moustache.
  • We went to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo several times, the Denver zoo once, the Sedgwick County Zoo and Tanganika in Wichita, and Zoo Tampa. We didn't go to the North Pole or roller skating at all. We went to the Olympic Museum for the first time. We went to Sea Quest a few times.
  • Jenna started playing basketball.
  • Kellen lost 4 teeth. And broke his right radius and ulna and left fourth metatarsal (about 2 months apart).
  • Jenna, Madilyn, and Mima enjoyed a few? Mima's Sew Fun nights.
  • Kellen finally got to ride a horse! (Jenna got to ride, too!)
  • Kevin and I celebrated 22 years of marriage.
  • Kevin finished his third year at TCA and started his fourth.
  • I completed two years of working in the NICU (5 years at St. Francis) and completed a year of school nurse consulting.
  • Jenna and Kellen had two in-person piano recitals.
  • Jenna virtually performed with the CU Middle School Honor Band and the Pikes Peak Middle School Honor Band. And, she was accepted to the All City High School Honor Band for an upcoming 2022 performance.
  • Still, some things canceled. Lots of things we were still able to do.
Good days and bad days and blessings throughout. 2021 was still tough/weird, yet we still have so much to be thankful for!

Other December Happenings

We enjoyed this treat! But, the actual trees were difficult to find.

Thursday, December 2nd - Jenna's first basketball game!

Saturday, December 4th - We bought and decorated Papa and Mima's Christmas tree.
Grant and Kellen were the best decorators! They made sure it looked just right.
After dinner, Papa, Kevin, and I enjoyed watching Michigan win the Big 10 Championship. The kids spent lots of time in the loft practicing singing Pentatonix Christmas songs like they used to do several years ago.
Sunday, December 5th - After the piano recital, we went to a special Advent service at church, then brought home pizza and decorated our tree while watching The Grinch.

Wednesday, December 8th - Basketball pictures during practice. Practice or games 6 days a week since the beginning of November.

Friday, December 10th - The first few snowflakes of this season - a record late first snow and nothing really accumulated.
Saturday, December 11th - Kevin had an 8th grade rehearsal, then we went over to Papa and Mima's for the afternoon. Kellen enjoyed having Papa teach him how to play chess.

Wednesday, December 15th - Kellen had a stomach bug in the night, so we stayed home together. We were very glad to stay home as we had a crazy wind storm.
Friday, December 17th - Kevin, Kellen, and I enjoyed "Spiderman No Way Home" on the Iconic screen and then In N Out burgers. Jenna went to the movie too, after basketball practice with Brooke.
Saturday, December 18th - First day of Christmas break and Jenna's second basketball game. She was fouled on a field goal for a 3 point play and later fouled again and made both of those free throws - 5 points this game! Way to go Jenna!
Saturday afternoon, Kellen helped me with some holiday baking - cinnamon rolls and peppernuts.
Saturday night - one of our favorite traditions - Mexican food then Christmas lights. This time, we went to Chuy's (sad that El Padrino has been closed since the fall).

We went to a few houses, then went to Chick-fil-A to get Peppermint shakes, then went to a few more houses. This one by far, was the most bizarre!
Sunday, December 19th - Kellen enjoyed the Happy Birthday Jesus party at church. Then, our Bible class had a pizza potluck, then in the evening, Jenna and I went to a fun cookie exchange party.
Monday, December 20th - We were supposed to celebrate Christmas with the Whitelaws/Keetons, but Grant was sick, so we postponed. We went over to Papa and Mima's house anyway and were surprised by their new tree! The one that we had decorated on December 4th had already dried out, so they went to the forest and got one. I think it's beautiful.
Tuesday, December 21st - Kellen had his two upper baby canine teeth pulled because the adult teeth had grown in and the baby teeth had never come out. And, would you believe, he lost his bottom left molar the very next day?!
Wednesday, December 22nd - Kevin enjoyed hiking with the band director guys.
Family picture preparation shenanigans before the girls went out and the guys stayed home.
The girls enjoyed lunch and Escape Manitou. We escaped with 1 minute 30 seconds left. It was so fun!

These three worked on gingerbread houses in the afternoon.
Jenna's finished product.

Sunday, December 26th - Zoo lights! It was fun to see the moose so close!

And, the baby hippo was so cute. We had a fun time - not too cold!
Back home for French silk pie - so thankful for my friend Sonya who made it for us!
Monday, December 27th - While Kevin and I were in Estes, Jenna and Kellen enjoyed spending time with Papa and Mima. They went to the Roadhouse and saw Sing 2 while having dinner.

They also went to get Kellen a plain red shirt at a craft store. He painted it to create a new Krossfire costume.

Thursday, December 30th - Super hero fight scenes after Thursday night dinner.

Friday, December 31st - We went to Papa and Mima's house for lunch. Then, Mima, Jenna, Kellen, and I went to the Broadmoor to see the Penrose museum and the Gingerbread house. But, everything was closed. So, we came back to watch football playoff games and I worked on this blog.
It started snowing after dark - our first measurable snow of the season! Once home, Kevin finished the dismal Michigan game. I made my Grandma Vernie's Date Nut Roll. Kevin went to bed and the kids and I stayed up. Jenna gave up around 11:30 and Kellen and I stayed up until midnight, but it was too cloudy/snowy to see the Pikes Peak fireworks. Goodbye 2021, hello 2022.

Estes Park

Monday, December 27th - Wednesday December 29th - Kevin and I enjoyed a getaway to Estes Park. First stop - Rocky Mountain National Park - scenery and elk.

Kevin surprised me with snowshoes and we tried them out first at Hollowell Park.

So beautiful and fun to trek through the snow!

Tuesday, December 28th - Our original plan quickly changed as it was SO COLD and windy. We did make it across Nymph Lake and a bit further before conditions became too treacherous. Frozen eyelashes!

It was so very beautiful! Shortly after we turned back, we stopped to eat a sandwich quickly.

Bear Lake.
Piles of snow!
More elk
The river on the property where we stayed.
Enjoyed the hot tub after snowshoeing, then walked around the town/shops. We enjoyed elk burger and elk shepherd's pie for dinner at Grubsteak. A much needed getaway!

Wednesday morning - one last hot tub soak, then headed home. We decided to try Buca di Beppo for lunch because we had thought about the lemon chicken and hadn't been to a Buca in a while. No cars in the parking lot and when we walked in, they said they didn't have ANY servers! There were two cooks and one said that he could serve us if we wanted to stay. It was SO WEIRD! But, tasty. The next day, two fires started right on the route that we took home. So surreal that we had just been through there and that we had originally considered staying a third night. We would have had a difficult time getting home. So much devastation in the Marshall and Middle Fork fires.
