During egg dying I was having contractions. I started to notice I has having more then usual, so I decided I better start timing them. Sure enough they were coming 5 minutes apart, but they were bearable. We went home, and I decided I would go to bed, and that if the contractions were bad enough I would wake up. I really thought that they would and that Trey would wake up as a big brother... what was I thinking?
Well we went to bed, and woke up the next morning (with no baby, but still having contractions) I went all Saturday, still having contractions 5 mins apart. They weren't getting any closer, but they were getting stronger. I was refusing to go to the hospital, since they weren't getting closer, because I figured they would just send me home (like they did with Trey) We decided to go to Panda Express (we went there after they sent me home with Trey, and then my contractions really picked up. So we thought it might work this time too. Turns out it was a really bad idea, you'll see why later) After we ate,Will started getting worried, since now I had been having consistent contractions for almost 24 hours. Let me back up and preface this whole labor story with the fact that Trey ended up being a c-section, but I was trying a VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean). Will really wanted me to go to the hospital to get checked at least, but I still refused. So he called the dr. office and talked to the on call nurse, since it was Saturday evening, she advised us to go in. She said I should probably get checked out, since I had been having contractions for so long, we didn't want it wearing down on the scar, causing more risk for uterine rupture.
We dropped Trey off at the Scarlett's and headed to the hospital about 7 pm. We got there and I was only dilated to a 2, however my blood pressure was high, so they called my dr and he said to keep me and give me my epidural. Around 7:45 pm I was admitted and we called our families and told them we were staying, but told everyone not to rush down, since I was only a 2- we figured it would be a long night and that we would probably have an Easter Sunday baby. My parents, came right down though, because I really wanted to receive a blessing before my epidural.... I am so glad that they got there when they did. Right after they got there, Will and my dad gave me a blessing, and then the nurses kicked my parents out to give me my epidural. After the epidural, they wanted to put monitors on the baby's head to keep a close eye on him during labor. However.... when they went to put the monitors on the baby, they realized that it wasn't the top of his head that they were feeling... it had bumps and a hole... the nurse called another nurse in to check, and she agreed. Then they called the dr in. He said, 'yep, that's a nose. We need to go and get this baby out!" They started shoving white clothes at will, and I was telling will where the camera was. While trying to get dressed, will was trying to call his parents to tell them what was going on....
Needless to say, Baby Boy Scarlett was out by 10:16 pm (4/7/12). I have discovered after 2 LONG labors that both ended up in c-sections (due to the baby) that my children are very strong willed and have their own plans, even when it comes to making their grand entrance.
From this picture you can see that when they went to get him out, his face was RIGHT there. (It should have been the top of his head) Instead of having his head bent forward toward his chest, he had it pulled back! This was putting pressure on his neck and has making his heart rate drop. It wasn't safe for him to go through the rest of labor and delivery, and especially with it being a VBAC we didn't want to take any chances. I am just so glad that he is here and safe.
Since I ended up with a c-section, they usually tell you not to eat before surgery for like 8 hours.... but I had just eaten Panda Express.... Not A Good Idea! I kept throwing up after the surgery... :(
We finally decided on a name (when he was about 24 hours old)
Matthew Thomas Scarlett
Matthew is a family name on Will's side of the family. Matthew Caldwell, He was an amazing man with great stories. Thomas is from my family (my dad's middle name and my brother's name). However, we hadn't officially decided on the name Matthew, until Sunday night, Will was looking up the meaning of names, and Matthew means 'gift from God' with it being Easter, we thought it was fitting... one of the best gifts our Heavenly Father has given us.
He is such a smiley boy, so happy to meet his buddy Rylan!
We Sure love this little guy and are so grateful he is part of our family.
A little Trey update- He ignored Matthew for the first few weeks... and even tried testing the waters and wanted to kick him. But for the most part he just drives his trucks around him like he isn't even there. In recent days, he has become more gentle and acknowledging of him. He likes to be a helper with the diapers, getting them and throwing dirty ones away, and getting his pacifier.
He turns 22 months tomorrow and has turned into such a big boy. He sings his abc's counts up to 20 with a little bit of help. Knows his shapes... his favorites are octagons, rhombus, and pentagons. Everything is associated with a shape to him. He is so fun and I love watching him learn, grow, and discover new things!
