Slow down, why the big Rush?

Rush has taken off lately - he has moved from an army crawl to hands-and-knees, got a couple new teeth last week, is sitting up, and now pulling up to gnaw on the glass of our coffee table. Even though he has been sick this week, the kid has found the energy for some big smiles and fun.

On the other hand, he looks like this a lot since his cough and runny nose are making sleep much, much harder.

I can't wait to see what he'll learn what to do next. Here is a rare shot with Dad (Cary is starting to get really good with the camera, so I might actually be in our family photos!)

Shake it like a polaroid picture

Lots is going on here in Murphyland, even though everyone but me (Andy) is sick to one degree or other. Looking back through photos we haven't put up yet, I found this one that I love of Winnie. The scene is: it's past her bedtime, but Daddy has decided it is time for a dance party. What makes a great dance party? 1) Rain boots, 2) Girly skirt over jammies, and 3) a dance partner (in this case, W's flower-girl doll). Mix that with a combination of The Who and Sesame Street songs, and you've got a really sweet dance party!

Three Things

1. Rush has man hands
2. Rush has no interest in eating anything, including Cheerios.
3. Rush is so cute.

They would probably call her "The Toot Fairy"

Watching this video Cary shot on her iphone, I am starting to wonder if they don't Tivo "Jersey Shore" while I'm at work. I mean, Come On!

Rush Chivvis, 8 Months

Rush is such a joy. His personality is amazing, and he is growing into a fun little guy. This week, just about a week before his 8 month birthday, he has taken off! He is starting to sit up (finally!!!), pull himself up onto his knees, pull himself up to standing (!), and crawl on his knees. The army crawl is phasing out. I'll miss it! We can't keep up with him. We never baby-proofed our house with Winnie. She never went places she wasn't supposed to and never got into anything she wasn't supposed to. Rush, on the other hand, has deemed all power cords, furniture legs, dog bowls, rug edges, dog feet, and toilet bases as HIS toys. Is that a boy thing? I chase him around everywhere. I don't mind...he is growing and learning. Rush loves attention and smiling back at you. He gives the best hugs and kisses and gets excited when Daddy gets home. His tongue is usually always out (see photos). He crawls over to Puddy and wants to play with him...Puddy, of course, endures the tugs. He likes to be tossed into the air and swung around. He loves Winnie and smiles SO big whenever she pays him any attention. He is awesome at finding something to do and sticking with it for a while. He loves jumping in the jumperoo and looking out our glass balcony door. He hardly ever cries, but when he does...watch out. He has discovered the "da, da, da," sound and makes it a lot...usually a little louder than you'd expect. He still refuses to take a bottle and I can't get him to eat baby food. Such a momma's boy.

Painting

If I were still a teacher and this were my classroom, we would be in the midst of a color unit. Winnie has been really into drawing, coloring, identifying colors, and painting. Of course, I LOVE IT! We went to Target yesterday and bought anything they had that was age-appropriate and art-related...stickers, fingerpaints, crayons, markers, watercolors, glue sticks, and thick paper. I am going to make a trip to Bradburns and Art Mart when we use this supply up. I love that we will just be sitting around playing, and she'll say, "WeeWee paint?" She calls herself WeeWee, maybe because that is what Al called her first? Winnie's first painting was impressive, I thought! The colors are a bit compromised now, but she's having fun experimenting. Here are a few photos of a watercolor session that showcases me practicing using our new lens.

Straight Hair

These winter days are making it harder to stay entertained. So, I straightened Winifred's hair! It was weird getting used to because I feel like she looks like a different person. Two women at Nordstrom complimented her eyes yesterday, though, which never happens...it's always just, "look at that hair!"

Valentines Day

Saturday night Cary asked me if I had gotten her anything for Valentine's Day - which was smart because I had forgotten to check when the florist I ordered from was going to be open. Checking backfired, though, because she figured that I was just ordering them last second! As usual, we got an awesome arrangement from Riley's Florist (a Chouteau's Landing tenant and great shop). Riley and his wife didn't like the lilies they received for my order, and switched to an orchid instead. I can't recommend them enough, they do really thoughtful work. Winnie came with me, and Riley hooked her up with a lion and "bloon," which she LOVES. One side is mirrored, and she thinks it is really funny to see herself and people nearby in the reflection.
Then the fireworks show really started when Al came over from next door with some flowers and a gift for his big crush - he and Winnie were really cute together. Then I made him watch me clean my shotgun in case he had any big ideas about where things were headed with my daughter.
For me, the best part was that Al demonstrated that he is all man - yes he brought flowers to the girl-next-door, but first he smashed them on the door so she wouldn't think he was a sissy. Cary put the blooms in a bowl, and I think overall he did a great job on his Valentine's debut.
On Friday, Cary helped Winnie make a Valentine's invite for her Grandpa, which she delivered by hand to him at the office!

I'm not sure what part of "smile" made them both appear so serious, but I guess getting a big invite is serious business after all! Grandpa came over for dinner and Winnie/Rush had a lot of fun seeing him. We hope you all had as good a day as we did!

Cookies! The Fun Never Stops...

I love cookies. My FAVORITE cookies are made by an amazing company...Liz Lovely. They are vegan, fair-trade, some gluten-free, organic, and non-GMO. And delicious. They have a great mission statement that makes me want to buy from them. (I once had a dream that Liz and I were friends. She seems like someone I'd want to be friends with) My sweet husband tried sending some to me in Arkansas, but there was a shipping mix-up, so they just came yesterday. I have had most of the flavors and they are all so yummy. (No, I do not get paid to plug for Liz Lovely)

Today, I let Winnie play with the box they were shipped in, and she had a blast with the packing peanuts. She made up about 10 different games with it all...dump the peanuts, clean up the peanuts, sit in the box, push the box around, try to feed Rush peanuts, try to put Puddy in the box, and so on, and so on. She got a lot of practice with her hand-eye coordination when she cleaned up all of the peanuts by picking them up and putting them in the box with a wooden spoon! When she got bored with it, I put some food coloring in water and let her dip the peanuts in the colors to dye them. They were soluble, so she dissolved them by stirring, which was her favorite part. We've been talking a lot about colors at home, so it was a great reinforcement lesson. I love watching this girl learn...she is so smart and her brain is just a sponge when it comes to everything.
Look how focused she is!

I kept catching Puddy eating a stray packing peanut, but no worries, because...

The Arkansas Pole

As mentioned in an earlier post, Andy went to the west coast, so I took the kids to Arkansas last week. We had a nice time, and were shocked to see a snowstorm. In Arkansas. My dad said that it was the most snow he'd seen there since we moved down (in 1993) We ended up staying a day later because of nasty road conditions. I would post photos of the snow, but my northern followers might just scoff at it. It was a big deal in Conway! Here are some photos with commentary from our trip!
On Wednesday, we went to Little Rock to visit Aunt Tracy at her work, Boulevard Bread Co. Then, we went to my favorite store, the Box Turtle for a little shopping. We met up with Aunt Jenny and Mom and ate at Cafe Bossa Nova for some Brazilian fare. I had a yummy beans and rice with collard greens dish, and Winnie had her favorite macaroni and cheese and a smoothie. She capped off the dining experience by puking on the table.

As a special Friday afternoon treat (my sister does something fun and creative with her kids every Friday night) we painted pottery in Conway. It was right up Winnie's alley, so I can't wait to see the finished product. She did a plate...I wanted it to be in pinks, purples, and blues, but she kept stealing from her cousins palettes, so I'm sure it will have bits of black, red, and orange in it.

Sweet Remi painting her little pig. I just think she is so precious! Raff painted a robot and Finn did a tarantula (very them, I think).

Winnie and I had brunch at Stobys with some of my old small group girls, Megan, Amber, Ali (her blog is coming soon), and Marietta. I think Winnie was on the road to getting sick, because she wasn't much of a showboat like she normally is. She was kinda crabby, as you can probably tell from this photo (that I stole from Marietta's blog). She did refer to them the rest of the weekend as the "Pretty Girls."

Of course, Winnie loved all of the snuggle/TV time with Raff and Finn. She copied EVERYTHING that Rafferty did all week long. It was taking too long to load, so I gave up, but I will try later to post a video of her chasing the boys around.

On Saturday, we walked across the street to see the McEntires and got to meet Jordan, Billy's wife. I babysit Billy for six years in high school and college until he got his driver's license and didn't need me anymore:) I was 37ish weeks pregnant with Rush when they got married, so I was sad to miss their wedding. She was very sweet and super cute! This picture looks funky because it's a picture of a picture Margie took for us.

Jenny and Ryan hosted a Valentine's Day party on Sunday night for us at their BEAUTIFUL house. We had Subway sandwiches, then decorated valentines cookies with sprinkles, craisins, blueberries, almonds, chocolate chips, and coconut flakes. Jenny is a party-thrower extraordinaire.

Winnie decorating her cookies. She was especially fond of the pink icing (I kept catching her eating from everyone else's plates) and the coconut flakes.

The next part of the evening's festivities was a karaoke contest in the style of The Singing Bee. This is Remi and Finn performing...maybe Finn's rendition of "That's a Lie." Winnie would take the microphone and start singing "A-B-C..." then get bashful and stop. I performed Bon Jovi's "I'll Be There For You," Debbie Gibson's "Foolish Beat," and "Love Story" by Taylor Swift. My first two were mediocre at best, and I was finally going to redeem myself with Love Story. My lyrics sheet was messed up and it threw me off. It was the perfect song for my vocal range. Rip off! I'm going to demand a repeat performance of it next time I'm there. I'll practice it until then. Jenny and I dueted "Romeo and Juliet" by the Indigo Girls, and I swear it could've brought tears to anyone's eyes it was so good.

This was Rush's face while everyone was singing. He loved it! If you're wondering, EVERYONE performed, even Ryan and my mom and my dad. My dad brought down the house with "Summer of '69" and a sweet "I Think We're Alone Now" duet with my mom.

The last day there, little Winifred was sick (you might blame all of the pink icing and apple juice she consumed the day before) and this was her position all day long. Luckily, my parents TV had plenty episodes of The Wonder Pets DVRed. On the way home, she puked a little bit in Harrison, so I had to stop and change her clothes. I was planning on stopping for a break in Branson to visit Matt and Michele and the kids, but I was nervous about infecting their household. I thought, "Oh, she's fine...she probably just got choked up." Well, she proceeded to yak all over the car and herself on the Ozark Mtn. Highroad one minute before we arrived at their house. They graciously welcomed us in and helped me clean her up. Thanks, guys! We are all better now.

The Archives

Well, as you can see from the last post, I (Andy) am in L.A. right now, and really missing my family. So since I have the laptop, I am going through some photos and thought I would post a couple from the archives. I don't think these have ever been on the blog, but either way they are really cute. We are so blessed to have these wonderful kids - and they are really blessed to have such an amazing mom. I am blessed by both! Miss you guys!

Different Strokes for Different Folks

Tomorrow, we are heading out of town. Andy, to the fabulous...
Los Angeles! And...
Las Vegas! Cary and the kids are heading to (drumroll, please)....

Conway, Arkansas!

Andy is going to a work convention in Las Vegas, then to LA to visit our friends Mark and Kara. I didn't feel physically or emotionally prepared to fly alone with our children to join them in LA, so I'm going to stay with my family for a week. Obviously, Conway's a bit less sexy than Andy's trip, but I'm really excited. Our trips to Arkansas over the weekend are never long enough. I'm going to stuff myself full of my mom's amazing cooking, Maggie's cookies, Stobys, and enjoy being home. I will try to take lots of pictures, but Andy's the one who is good at that, so we'll see what I end up with:)

I feel like I'm creeping out of the fog that I have been in for a while. Spending all of my time since the summer of 2007 being pregnant, breastfeeding, not sleeping through the night, having newborns, having a toddler will put you in quite the fog. It's a funny thing, because I know that for the rest of my life, I will look back at these last few years and LONG for them back...when Winnie would let me rock her to sleep, when I got these unbelievable kisses from Rush, when Winnie wanted to hold my hand, when Winnie would jabber and count and run around in circles, and when Rush would look at her and smile so big, when Andy and I would laugh hysterically at the hilarious things are babies do. But right now, it tough. But good tough. I'm so happy and think I have the best babies in the universe and really don't take for granted any time that I have with them. I'm not one to wish time away...I want it to stand still!

Anyways, I'm going to try and move this into a more "family" blog in terms of our whole family. I never post anything about me or Andy. I'm going to start. If you are only here for cute pictures of my kids, you can just scroll past all of the other stuff! I was just telling one of my friends that I like to always have a baby with me, because I can hide behind them...no one notices my bed head, no makeup, or lack of interesting things to say if I have a cute kid in tow! So my new blog direction is me, stepping out from behind my kids. We are all four (sorry, Puddy, FIVE) pretty cool.
