My Baby Boy

Rush has been feeling a bit under the weather this weekend. He's been sleeping it off every day...taking 3 or 4 hour naps. He's been a bit feverish and had a pretty wicked puke Thursday night while I was out with friends. Poor Andy had to do some bedtime cleanup, and Rush ended up sleeping in bed with me. But he's feeling better (still sleeping a lot) and looking forward to Memorial Day celebrations! The photo above is from Thursday early evening...I put him in the living room while Andy and Winnie were watching TV and I was making dinner. He was asleep on a pillow within a minute. This was a big deal because NEITHER of my children ever fell asleep randomly like this. Ever. Well, last summer my mom was holding Winifred on a trolley tour of Wilmington, NC, and she fell asleep on my mom. That's it. He stayed asleep on that pillow until I picked him up to get him ready for bed. Sweet boy! This photo below is him getting some lovin' from Winnie in the tub.

I Don't Know What's Going On Here

What's Going On This Morning

Me: Winnie, where is Mommy's phone?
Winnie: In my brother's crib.

Me: Winnie, where are all of Rush's cars?
Winnie: In Puddy's crate

Me: Winnie, where is your spoon?
Winnie: Under my butt

Me: Winnie, where is the remote control?
Winnie: On Daddy's grill

Me: Winnie, do you see Rush?
Winnie: He's in the bathroom. (She lured him in, then shut the door behind her and left him in there. Of course, Rush didn't make a peep. I found him sitting in the shower.)

This is all true and all happened throughout today. It's only 1:31, so we'll see how the rest of the day goes! Well, at least she is honest and has a great memory.

A Sunday

Mother Nature heard my plea and gave us a beautiful Sunday! We had a great day. One of those types of days you wish you could have over and over. A benefit of going to church on Saturday nights is that we truly get a day of rest and play. I feel like I finally have a Sabbath...a day of rest that we were never able to get on Saturdays. Saturdays always turned into busy days.
Andy woke up with Rush (this kid wakes up at 5:45 ready to go every morning) and took him and Puddy all the way to Kirkwood to get Dunkin Donuts. Winnie and I slept in, then after breakfast we drove to Eckert's Farm to pick strawberries with the Reinbergs. I love spending time with the Reinbergs...for a lot of reasons, but mainly because it is just comfortable. Winnie loves them and treats them like family. While I was finishing getting ready, our front door was open and Winnie was at their front door, knocking lightly saying, "C'mon, Al! I'm ready to go to the strawberry patch with you!" So sweet. The weather was great to be outside and we had a good time. Al took home the trophy for "Most Strawberries Eaten By Such A Small Person" award...yowzers. He looked like a vampire by the end of the morning.
After lunch and naps, we took a walk down to Citygarden so the kids could play in the water. I'm so thankful that we have this downtown!

It was definitely more woodsy and grown than I was anticipating. It was hard work!

This sums up the morning...me doing all the work while Winnie nibbled away. I think our kids ate about two pints of berries while we were there.

The sad face. We are very used to this face at the Murphy house, but seeing it stained red was a little more amusing.

Winnie and Al getting sprayed. Winnie was more timid on this visit, but check out the joy in Albert's face! I love it!
Rush has two faces...super serious or super smile. Not much in between.

Schedules

The last photo of "Cat." I still haven't gotten over it and still haven't bought a new one.

This is one of those posts that is more for just me...a documentation of our life right now for future reference. I decided, after talking to some of my friends, to devise a loose daily schedule for our days here at home. Too often at bedtime, I look back at our day and think, "What did we even do?" or "Did the kids have fun/learn anything today?" I never want to put too much pressure of myself, because I know they are usually always learning and having a good time, but I am a teacher at heart, so I want to do the best I can for my kids. I shouldn't let that college degree be for nothing! I was holding a little baby last night (sigh) and just kept thinking how babies come into this world as a nice, clean slate, and we put things/allow things to be put on that slate. (which obviously reminds me of my favorite word(s) from college, "tabula rasa." I used to say them over and over--just like the way it sounded) I don't want Dora, Diego, Elmo, and Abby to put more on those slates than me! And, Winnie is at the age where she needs to be spending a good deal of time in free, imaginative play. As a teacher, I know that uninterrupted, non-directive, creative play helps a child's cognitive development. More, sometimes, than a structured learning activity. So we do a little of both around here!

8:00 Breakfast together
8:30 Free play for W and R (Mommy cleans up, boils bottle water, gets out supplies, etc)
9:00 Read books with W and R
9:30 R naps, Art project with W
10:30 Free play for W until R wakes up (Mommy on computer, laying out lunch, etc)
11:00 Walk outside with Puddy
12:00 Lunch for W and R
12:30 W naps, Books/learning activity with R
1:30 Free play for R (Mommy eats lunch and does daily cleaning-that's for another post)
2:30 R naps, learning activity with W
3:30 Mommy and W play until R wakes up
4:00 Walk outside with Puddy
5:00 Music (instruments, dancing, or singing)
6:00 Dinner

Notes:
-It's a little tricky because R takes two naps, and W just the one. So our schedule sounds more crazy than it really is.
-They also do not wake up at the same time every morning. We let them wake on their own, so that makes it hard to always know times, as they are a bit unpredictable in the mornings. So, these times are a bit ambiguous.
-The schedule will sound too detailed and awkward to you, but it's mostly what we were already doing. This is an over-schedule.
-It's summertime (I keep telling myself it's summertime so that Mother Nature might oblige and make my dreams come true), so as much as we can, we will ditch this schedule and go to the park, swimming, to the zoo, etc.
-"Learning activities with R" are very simple...stacking blocks, coloring, clapping games, pushing cars, stacking rings, etc. Just working with Mom at getting better with playing
-"Learning activities with W" are still simple...puzzles, identifying letters/numbers, zipping, buttoning, cutting, play dough, stacking blocks, counting, etc. Mostly book-based activities or Tot School activities.
-And as much as I resist it, I am an anal, scheduled, person who feels like I am drowning without some structure and a plan.
-After dinner is whatever: reading books, wrestling with Daddy, going on a walk, going to the park, playing...who knows? The kids love when he is home, so the fun just happens.
-Obviously, we do way more than is listed in the schedule. For example, you won't see anything about tickle monster, spontaneous snuggling, being carried around because they aren't feeling well, scratching backs, fixing hair, painting nails, chasing Puddy...and that kind of stuff happens a lot.

Cookies!

This horrible weather is brutal! It's mid-May! I refuse to bundle up my kids and get out when it should be summertime already, so we are having to get creative around here so that we keep our sanity. Yesterday, during Rush's afternoon nap, Winnie and I made peanut butter cookies. I figured they were a great choice, because she won't eat anything with chunks or varied textures (think chocolate chip cookies, no bake cookies, etc) I justified the process by pulling a Rachael Ray and saying, "well, peanut butter has a bit of protein." Rachael Ray takes HUGE liberties with the word "healthy," saying many, many things are healthy, when indeeed, they are NOT.

Winnie had a great time and really did make the cookies. The only things I did were reading the instructions, measuring and putting into the bowl the peanut butter and vanilla, cracking the eggs, and dealing with the oven. She did all of the measuring, pouring, turning on the mixer, rolling balls, dipping cookies in sugar, and making criss-crosses with the fork. She kept saying things like, "This is a great time!" and "We are a great team, Mommy!" So I think the baking was a big success.

Mother's Day 2010

Mother's Day is a big deal to me. I have two kids! They are my life, so a day that I get to celebrate all of that with my family is special. On Sunday, Andy woke up (early) with the kids and they went to get donuts so that I could sleep in a bit. And, yes, sleeping until 8:15 on a weekend is sleeping in since little Rush joined our family. Winnie was our late sleeper, but those days seem to be over. After breakfast, we headed over to the Missouri Botanical Gardens because it was such a BEAUTIFUL day. I went to a jazz night there before with some friends and we went to their Easter Egg Hunt, but this was my first real visit to the gardens. I am in love...it was such a fun experience in such a peaceful and beautiful place. I am happy that we live near so many wonderful places like this. We started out on the tram, which I was hoping would be enough like a train ride to appease the kiddos. It was a little to slow and made too many stops for them, but I enjoyed hearing the tour guide's commentary. I LOVE St. Louis history and Henry Shaw is like a celebrity to me. We jumped out of the tram and toured the Japanese gardens and other little sites. The kids had a blast "riding" the sheep installation. And Winnie couldn't get enough of the koi fish. I think they next time we go, I'm going to let her bring her change purse that Googie put money in so that she can buy some food to feed them. Thanks, Andy, for a great morning. And, a big "Happy Mother's Day!" to all the other mothers out there, especially my mom, "Googie" and Andy's mom, "Grandma."
She loved standing under this fountain (I did too!) It shot out every few seconds and made an arch to the next circle. It was startling and fun and gave you a little bit of a splash.

And without Andy, Mother's Day wouldn't be possible.

My sweet baby boy.

We also celebrated Uncle Joel's birthday Sunday evening at Joel and Becky's cute house. We played beanbags in the backyard and ate a delicious meal prepared by the Christensens. Rush was showing off his new "walking" skills and Winifred was just showing off. It was a great night! Joel, we are very thankful for you, and you are a terrific uncle. The kids love you! Andy and I are so happy you joined the family. Happy Birthday!

Winnie was clearly born to throw a beanbag.

Arkansas

The kids and I were able to go to Arkansas for eleven days last week. It was such a great time! As usual, we started our trip in Branson. My brothers family never disappoints....Michele made me this amazing pear and gorgonzola pizza and their children showed Winnie and Rush a wild time. Winnie picked up where she left off with her love for Owen. She just thinks he hung the moon. I tried to load a video of a little convo that she and Owen had, but I can't get it to load. It's really cute! He was a great friend to her.
I am really bad at taking photos in Arkansas without Andy. He is our family photographer! I just get so busy and forget all about it. We ate out a bunch--US Pizza, Mimi's, Boulevard, Fabys, Somethings Brewing, Oak Street Bistro, PF Changs--some of my favorites. We did a lot of shopping, too--Winnie got a little spoiled. We visited Tracy at work twice. Winnie loves going to Boulevard, because Tracy's friends make a big deal about her and Tracy gives her snacks. She is still talking about Tracy's work. I like going there for the same reasons! I got a delicious Boylan Black Cherry Soda (a treat I save exclusively for Boulevard) and a free loaf of chocolate chip cherry bread.
Rush posing at the Jump Zone. Winnie wasn't feeling well this morning, but Rush had a great time.

Winnie did a great deal of time outside, since the weather was AMAZING. She enjoyed helping Pawpaw in his garden. I should say "one of his gardens" as he has a few. This photo is blurry, because it's in super-zoom. They have a pretty big back yard, and I took the photo from the back deck.

We ate most of our lunches outside on the deck.

Winnie loves her cousins. Here, her and Remi are wearing matching brown maxidresses.

I feel like I should get an advertising check from Glad or Ziploc for posting this photo. Since she cooks so much, my mom is the queen of food storage...you should see her Pyrex collection! This was Rush's favorite place to play. Remi was really great at cleaning up after him.

On Friday, Andy flew in to Little Rock to be with us that last weekend. Luckily, my mom came to the airport with the kids and I, because that night was full of terrible tornados in Arkansas. I would have freaked out at the airport worrying about Andy had she not been with me. There was a tornado that touched down at the Little Rock Airport 30 minutes after we left. Whew! I am so thankful that Andy was able to land SAFELY. Driving home that night was super scary, but we made it home and had a great weekend. On Saturday, we went to the Toad Suck Daze in Conway, our annual festival there. We didn't take any photos, though. On Sunday, Winnie and I went to a bridal shower for the beautiful Ali Wren. I have known this girl since she was in the fifth grade and it is amazing to see her entering into this new stage in life. Winnie was bashful at first, but jumped in and soon was helping Ali open gifts and getting crackers from the "pretty girls" (that is what she calls my old small group girls, who are not even girls anymore because they are like 25!) But they are indeed all very pretty. See?---
It was a great trip! I think I cried for about 30 miles leaving Conway. I miss Arkansas! We were glad though to get back into the swing of normal life.

Winifred Gray

Winnie has entered into the terrible twos. I actually hate that term, but at least it gets the point across. I won't list all of her transgressions, because if she had the ability to do so, her list of why I am sometimes a terrible mom would be pretty long. I think that at the end of the day, she and I are just exhausted. With all the drama here, poor Rush might need to go to some man camp for babies. I don't think that exists, but it might be a good idea. Whatever Winnie might be going through, she is learning and growing and changing so fast that it makes me just cry every time I think about it. She is pretty terrific. I love her so much that might heart could just burst into a million pieces when I look at her. That makes all the other yucky stuff seem like not a big deal. Here are just a few photos that showcase her fun personality. Again, they are iPhone shots, so forgive the quality.

Riding the horse at Wilkinsons in Conway. She INSISTED on this outfit...Rush's t-shirt, her green tutu, cropped pants, flower barrette and "Remi" shoes.

Fighting sleep in the car, but she swaddled up Abby in her blankie. She is very nurturing towards her dolls.

Using the frisbee in the car to "Drive like Daddy." She came up with that one all on her own. She is definitely creative.

Her new sunglasses. The girl is mad for shades. We saw these at BabyGap the other day and had to buy them. You can't really tell in the photo, but she has another pair on top of her head, as well.
